does it hurt when a vamires fangs stretch out

Human beings who have sharpened their canine teeth or had implants, have their teeth always lowered.

I think to have teeth that move like snakes, would need quite a few changes to muscles and bones.

Vampire bats teeth do roll forward, but it doesn't seem to hurt them - but then they do squeak

If we're really trying to imagine a tooth stretching in length, the nerves inside wll have to be stretched too - if they don't tear, I'm sure it would be agony

I have to say, yes. I can't imagine that it wouldn't hurt. Either the teeth themselves would hurt or it would hurt the gums around the teeth. I have never met anyone that has this ability. If I ever do I will ask them if the pain ever goes away.

Say artemka, in response to you talking about people having dental procedures done...When the teeth get lowered, does that make them wobbly or less stable?

I think that they would feel it, but I don't think that it would hurt them.

So when you have your dental work, they smash a hole through the enamel, drill a hole down into the tooth, rip out the nerve, then can file, chip and hammer with no problem. If you pay they use pain medicines as well.

So long as they don't go down too far, or do something to make the gum grow back, the stump will be as solid as ever.

In most legends (and even some Hollywood) the vampire bites to tear a hole and drinks, or they use some sort of tool to make a hole before slurping.

I guess so, if you have naturally long canine teeth you can have the enamel rasped sharp, but that will make the enamel very thin and the tooth very weak.

I think most people have veneers (?) stuck over the top of their natural teeth. I would think this gives them the look that they want and the ability to have it removed when they're done

Well that's the first time I've heard of morphine just being in the system of a creature...

Maybe a rush of adrenaline or some bodily chemical that could make the pain less apparent or matter less to the vampire. But the fact of the matter is, unless the roots of a vampire's tooth just go away, it would be agonizing for the teeth to stretch like they are depicted as doing in some tales.

Yup canines do the ripping and tearing, its too far back to do any piercing without bringing the other teeth into the bite.

So the front teeth cut, then the looser lump of flesh gets hung up on the canines which then rip it free and into the mouth, where the bac teeth grind it into a pulp to be swallowed.

I wasn't too clear on my bat thing - The good ole vampire bat, bite with their front incisors which are really sharp, they make a hole in the animals flesh and drink through it using grooves on the underneath of the tongue while its saliva stops the blood clotting.

I was thinking more a fang - like a snake that has a groove or hollow section to allow liquids to move through it

Well Art that was always my argument when it comes to the typical view of a Vampire. The canines are usually shown to be the extended teeth and it's assumed by some that a vampire would make two itty bitty puncture wounds in the neck using those teeth.

I would love to see some pictures, of anyone and their special abilities. If you're a lycan, please snap some pictures of your transformation or special talents and post them.
Or if you have pictures of your teeth extending I would love to see them as well.

I can't imagine how incredible this proof would be for many of the members of Vampire Rave.

I believe that most vampire "fangs" you refer to are temporary caps that can be removed when desired. They are applied using a removable adhesive. They always have a fine gentleman preparing them at the Daracula's Ball when I attend. Other folks I know have the "fangs" installed permanantly and, as you described, it entailed a root canal therapy..removing the pulp and nerve tissues, amd then forming a post with the remains of the original tooth. A permanent crown made of porcelin is then attached to the post.

As to the growing of teeth within the mouth, I have never personally witnessed this, even thoug I have known several self proffessed vampires. I agree with your assesment that in order for this to take place the root canal of the tooth would grow considerably and necessitate the stretching of the nerve and pulp tissues. This would be quite painful.

Now, as far as the body of a vampire creating morphine? Morphine is an opiate, derived from the poppy plant. Unless the vampire is a animal - flower hybrid, I do not see how this would be possible. It is likely, however, that the excitement from the transformation may create the release of endorphins which would have the effect of dulling the pain for a short time. But it would hurt like hell after about 10 min. when the endorphine release subsided.

As far as I have been able to tell...the term Lycan became popular through the media and movies. Being a lycan requires that you be able to change into a bipedal creature, (aka part-wolf)

So if being a lycan means you transform...and yet you can't transform...what does that mean?

This post assumes that vampires are not vampires all of the time.... that they are vampires say at night... but not during the day... I think the issue of pain also assumes that a vampire is human... aren't vampires the undead??? why would pain exist after death???

I believe the MAIN point is in regards to whether or not it is painful for when a "vampire's" teeth change from "normal human like" into "vampire fangs" by growing in the mouth.

I would be very interested to see photographs of this during the entire process, not just "before and after".

there was a mention above of vampires feeding off vampires - would this not mean that the vampire would be drinking blood from the dead which, I'm told, will kill a vampire ?

If the vampire is a vampire 24/7 would they grow their fangs to bite, or just walk around with them always in vampire mode ?

Art: FYI, I'm not a dentist, but I have the proof.. if a root canal proceedure is done and the nerve & pulp are extracted from a tooth, the tooth will die and eventually, decay, weaken and fall apart.

It doesn't always fall apart right down to the root, so the root and surrounding jawbone might be strong enough to hold in a post for a cap, but the upper tooth itself will most likely need to be extracted in time.

From my experience and understanding...

justin case anyone is getting any ideas - i advise against having your teeth filed to sharpen them. seriously - i know someone who did that when she was younger, and now is losing all her teeth, very painfully, and the dental work she needs is way expensive. once you damage the enamel the protection is compromised and tooth decay is inevitable.

I do not think that a "vampires" teeth can streach or grow so it could not hurt because it does not happen, but if they did grown then i would think that it probably would hurt...

You bring up a good point Birra. If there is no blood flow to an area that part of the body starts to decompose and sluff off. So if something or someone (in this case) is undead, is there still circulation through the body? Because if they are dead, then clinically, their heart is no longer pumping blood through the circulatory system. If there's no blood, there's no way to infuse tissues with oxygen and other essential elements needed to stop necrosis.

Back to the original question, technically it would be physically impossible for teeth to raise and lower. They are in a fixed root which is lodged in the jaw. But if they could move...gods it would be excruciating pain. Ever have a tooth pulled? There's a reason they fill you up with numbing agents.

The pain could be a "good type", where it is a pain / pleasure type of thing.

It sure looks painful in the movies. ;)

However, one would have to imagine that after a while the vampire would develop a tolerance for the pain.

Now, who ever said vampires needed canines save for movies? Death is a formitable ally, and yet when one dies, the body ceases to grow. Undead is undead, the brain functions but the other physical activities are hindered. Like that of a zombi.

As far as I know through medical research, after death, the hair and nail folicols still grow after death, but the teeth remain inanimate. No growth, no nothing.

Natural vampires that of being trueblood, some do have natural canines, but they do not grow. This is a very good reason why we do not discuss feeding habits.

Oh, and Art, another question for the books...Are teeth bones, or are they a member of the cartolige family? What material are they made out of? Always wanted to know this.

The problem with being dead is that your body would decompose. Your eternal life would be OK until bits started to drop off your body, as I have said before on immortality topics; with immortality must come invulnerability or it isn't worth having.

Of course some folk will rush to point out that (in Hollywood at least) it is the drinking of human blood that keeps the body nourished. I can't honestly see that if the body isn't functioning (its dead) how taking anything into it can be broken down or moved around to do any good.

I believed that it was thrashed out in this forum a while ago that a vampire's bite (whatever sort of vampire) simply can't leave two neat holes.

The jaw can't work like that. You need top and bottom teeth to close together to bite, and that will leave a big torn hole.

A two hole snake bite is created when the snake dislocates their lower jaw and presenting a flat surface with two fangs sticking out.

So the vampire 'fangs' of Hollywood can't actually serve a practical purpose for slurping blood. There would be no need for evolution to have mutated a vampire to have canines that rise and lower.

Of course if a tooth could rise it would need a cavity in the skull to go into and I can't work out how the muscles would work to pull a tooth straight back into that cavity with no lever.

An animal's claw, which appears to come out, doesn't compare, it sort of rolls down.

Either way you're going to have someone whose face would be set up in such a way that they would be obviously different to look at.

So I guess that the question is not so much of does it hurt but does it happen ?

A lot of the blood drinking folk on here posted in he biting thread, that they don't actually bite because of the bruising and risk of disease to their donor. They used something sharp to draw blood and sucked, no fangs there.

Soulshroude, the tooth is made of enamel which isn't bone as such. Its unique to teeth and inside the enamel is pulp.

While this generated some good converstaion- this thread should have been a poll. It is a yes/no question that normally does not ask for a discussion.
