Somewhere on here there was a topic posted about white noise. In it both EVP's and white noise where discussed. I was wondering what the difference is between these two things? They seem pretty similar to me.

To be honest I'm not 100% sure either.

I found this on the net tho.... hopefully it'll help *shrugs* lol

This Phenomena occurs when the voices of a Spirit interrupt an Electro Magnetic Field,"E.M.F's", so inturn using audio tape i.e. from a micro cassette recorder reveals these voices where as before they could not be heard by a human ear. It is the same way with a dog-whistle, the dog in this case being the audio recorder. We as humans cannot pick up the sound of this dog-whistle because the frequency is to high. The dog, on the other hand can, because its ear drum is designed for hearing higher frequencies. The audio recorder uses magnets to record onto tape when an Electro Magnetic field is interrupted such as when paranormal activity occurs. This inturn effects the tape i.e."E.V.P"

White noise is a random signal (or process) with a flat power spectral density. In other words, the signal's power spectral density has equal power in any band, at any centre frequency, having a given bandwidth. White noise is considered analogous to white light which contains all frequencies.

An infinite-bandwidth, white noise signal is purely a theoretical construction. By having power at all frequencies, the total power of such a signal is infinite. In practice, a signal can be "white" with a flat spectrum over a defined frequency band.

so then, like a dog whistle. interesting comparison.
so then, can dogs hear the same things that an audio recorder can?
do you think?

The same could also be said for cats. As cats can hear higher frequencies than humans.

The main problem is that white noise is not achievable. In principle it would be any perfect random signal.

Now, concerning EVPs, since every recording technique, well, even the human hearing, introduces some artifacts into the signal, even a perfect white noise signal would be converted to grey noise by recording ...

Since you are now stuck with a random signal overlaid with a tiny bit of not-quite-random information, you can process this "signal" to be almost anything ...

Valerie999

I would not say that they are ALL fakes.

The power of suggestion plays a major part in EVPs and such. If I have a recording and there is a noise on it, it could be "go home" , "ho-mer", or if I was to play it for you and say do you here "fa-ther" you may think that you hear the voice saying father.

Since there can be NO pure signal, there is always going to be some noise on the recording or signal.

I hope that this helps.

I always understood that white noise was the noise that you recorded over to see if there were any EVPs. You play the white noise then on play back is when you hear the voices.

They are typically brief, usually the length of a word or short phrase and are sometimes claimed to be in direct response to the questions of researchers. The phenomena have been observed on diverse media, including: radio, hamradio, television, tape recorders and videorecorders

The voices on teh EVP's come through as white noise.

I also see where comments were made that these recordings are fake. I do EVP's and for a fact know that they are real. We also take the recordings and clean up all the background noise to get a clearer recording. I have heard the proof first hand that these recordings indeed are real

According to paranormal researchers, electronic voice phenomena (EVP) are speech or speech-like sounds, which are inaudible during recording but detected on electronic recording media upon playback. They are typically brief, usually the length of a word or short phrase and are sometimes claimed to be in direct response to the questions of researchers. The phenomena have been observed on diverse media, including: radio, hamradio, television, tape recorders and videorecorders. The term was coined by publishing company Colin Smythe Ltd in the early 1970s. Previously the term “Raudive Voices” was used, after Dr. Konstantin Raudive, an early researcher. References to EVP have appeared in the reality television show Ghost Hunters, the fictional Supernatural and the Hollywood films White Noise and The Sixth Sense as well as literature including the novels Legion and Pattern Recognition. EVP are a subset of the paranormal field of instrumental transcommunication.

White noise- is a random signal (or process) with a flat power spectral density. In other words, the signal's power spectral density has equal power in any band, at any centre frequency, having a given bandwidth. White noise is considered analogous to white light which contains all frequencies.

One use for white noise is in the field of architectural acoustics. In order to dissemble distracting, undesirable noises in interior spaces, a low level of constant white noise is generated.

It is used by some emergency vehicle sirens due to its ability to cut through background noise and its lack of echo, which makes it easier to locate.

Some also choose to use it in electronic music, it is also used to generate in pulse responses( helps to set up the EQ at a concert)

White noise can be used to disorient individuals prior to interrogation and may be used as part of sensory deprivation techniques. White noise machines are sold as privacy enhancers and sleep aids and to mask tinnitus. White noise CDs, when used with headphones, can aid concentration by blocking out irritating or distracting noises in a person's environment.

There are further examples of what White Noise is, how to achieve it and how it is applied to daily life available at:

Supposedly, all of the E.V.P. recording posted on the net on sites for them have all been authenticated. Comparing these two to one another and to real life things like the dog whistles is a good thing to do. That is just like with toddler's and young children compared to adult's. The children can supposedly see spirits and hear them, but most adults cannot because they have conditioned their minds with the information of the masses and have "closed" that portion of their mind off where as the children have not been exposed to the same information and for the same amount of time as the adults and therefore can see such ghosts and other paranormal occurances.

EVP's have always had a place in paranormal invesitgations. White noise...I'm not so sure about. The first that I ever heard of it having any connection with the paranormal was the movie White Noise. I always just thought white noise was like background noise...like static on a T.V. or a fan blowing--a dull sound that goes virtually unnoticed.

White noise is just a created background used in recording EVPs. By using the White noise as a background, you cover all of the frequency ranges within the pre-set power of the white noise. When you record over white noise you can hear all of the imperfections in the sound you are recording, and thus, when replayed you get the EVP part of the equation. If you are going to be recording EVPs, it is best to use white noise as the background because it is one set power over all possible frequencies. Hope this helps you in understanding the difference. Okay...I am still confused. What I'm getting from all the responses is that "White Noise" is a supposedly naturally occuring phenomenon, whereas EVP's are supernatural.

What I've gotten from other things I've read...is that EVP's occur supernaturally, but you can hear things like EVP's within white noise...so wouldn't they actually be different?

Just to clear some things up a bit, since some of the main arguments here seem to be taken indiscriminatingly of some site and posted over and over again.

White noise: a pure noise signal containing no information of any kind. The signal-to-noise ration is by necessity infinite, since signal=0 divided by anything ... well.

Hearing something in white noise: Go tho a head sharing. Sorry! That's the only possible answer. Since you're hearing something which can be proven (remember, the signal is ZERO) not to be there, it has to be a delusion.

TV noise: that type of noise is normally called grey.

Therefor:

Grey noise: Random noise limited by bandwidth constraints. So there is a signal detectable. That signal corresponds to the limiting bandwidth...

pink noise: when the amplitude corresponds to 1/f (f being the frequency) we call it pink.

brown noise: like pink but the dependency is 1/f^2

In all these cases there is no external signal involved. But it's rather easy by combining different forms of noise and than playing it back to - rather easily - discern vowels being uttered. But that's an artefact.

Now in case of a so-called EVP somebody tapes something. Well. First even if no mic is attached your standard tape recorder will but small signal with a rather unfavourable signal-to-noise ratio on the tape. This signal is there superimposed to the signal already on the tape, and there is one which in itself is (unless the tape was already used, storaged and manufactured in an unshielded environment, which is the normal case there) already some sort of grey noise. Add a microphone to that which normally will involve an amplifier of sorts, and you got - still without inputting any signal - at least four different types of noise superimposed. Since no tape machine can keep rotating at a perfect uniform speed, you have a 5 parameter. The magnetic fields from the drive system will add a slightly oscillation noise to the tape, too. As will any power lines in the vicinity, ....

I think you get the picture. Recording an EVP in undisprovable circumstances? It hasn't been done yet, and is technically not possible. If you want, you can believe it. From a scientific view it's bullshit. Oh, sorry, that would be a signal, wouldn't it?

EVP= Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP) are said to be manifestations of voices of ghosts or spirits made audible through static on the radio, or on electronic recording media.

EVP: Elctronic Voice Phenomenon

EVP is the recording of a disembodied voice in digital or analog audio media.

White Noise

White noise itself is the continuous "static" found in either audio or visual media. White Noise Phenomenon occurs when either visual or auditory manifestation of a sentient being can be identified within the electronic white noise.

WNP is not the same as EVP because:

1. WNP can occur spontaneously, whereas EVPs are recorded.

2. WNP encompasses the visual range as well as the auditory, whereas EVPs are limited to auditory media.

3. Auditory WNP is not disembodied, the sound actually emanates from the electronic device, whereas EVPs are simply captured on an electronic device with no source for the emanation of sound.

I don't think there really is that much difference between the two. With either one I am sure that there is going to be some voices picked up at some point in time but at the same time I think a lot of what is being picked up is just noise that people are listening to so hard that they are hearing things.

Now it seems that I have been watching too much T.A.P.S.

I've seen a lot of responses to the question; but nothing that is understandable to most of the folks around here (no offense to the rocket scientists and brain surgeons).

This is my understanding of WN vs EVP:

White noise is a general term which describes a constant yet seemingly random noise; such as what the older generations remember as TV snow or static. White Noise Phenomena occurs when a spirit needs a pre-existing audio band in order to communicate. Just as the living can speak without producing anything audible by "mouthing"; the afterlife spirits need an artificial set of vocal chords. White noise provides an audible transport/energy for their message to be hear.

EVP is the recording of a disembodied sound. It is a spiritual voice which is generated at an audible frequency which is outside the range of normal human hearing. Yes, I believe that dogs and cats are capable of hearing some of these EVP - and anybody who both believes in EVP and has cats or dogs will back me on this. This is when your pet starts playing or paying attention to essentially nothing that you can see or hear - but they can. Electronic recording devices have a higher sensitivity to the audio spectrum, and as a natural process of what they do, converts the audio levels to a range that the human ear is capable of hearing.

I will agree with several of the others though, that WNP and EVP are very subjectical to the person listening to it. I have heard EVP recordings and believed to have heard something or nothing; and as soon as it is suggested as to what I should be hearing - that is what I will now hear.

But, to answer the original question - EVP is a disembodied voice or noise which a spirit is capable of producing on their own. White Noise Phenomena is when a spirit needs the pre-existing energy of an audio signal (static) to produce or carry their message.
