Your whole life flashes before your eyes. You were so sure this is what you wanted. To escape pain, boundaries, every limit humanity placed upon you. But, but, but, you didn't want to lose that. What would 'that' be for you?
For me it would be the realization that there is no such thing as escape.
We have all the time we need.
We really do.
How could I ever understand and have a relationship with a human if I did not experience their trials... like age, and physical pain?
Well that would be my children since they would most likely be exempt from causing me the grief that drove me to such an action.
My "that" would be my daughter and my parents. I know that they would never cause me the pain and hurt that would drive me to such an act.
My 'that' would be four different people. Each of which I care for more than all others.
I would miss the feel of the sun on my face and the wamth that I feel.
Human companionship and the ability to enjoy the outdoors. I'm a day person, being a vampire would suck. (no pun intended)
I'm a night person, that wouldn't bother me.
I would miss eating REAL food.
I would find anything beyond a loved one not worth being missed if I am in that state of mind.
I'd also miss just knowing I exist. Knowing that I am alive.
I would miss the ability to give of myself, to share in the emotions of others. Until recently, my life had been nothing more than a pathetic attempt to quench certain desires. There were events in my life that changed my whole perspective of what was truly important. Now, here I am, thankful for the chance to continue to grow and learn.
I think you always 'exist' though... even if not in the same facet. As Sappho says, "Words, although they are only breath, words which I command are immortal."
Always existing, possibly. But when someone dies, I believe they lose their concious thought. Therefore not knowing they exist or anything else.
My That would be my pets of course and my sisters. Although there are other loved ones i could think of as well that would be my that as well if you don't have to choose just one thing to list.
Lagniappe, am I right in presuming that this is a "chosen death"?
I wouldn't want to lose my sisters or the person I am in love with if any at that time
I would, having never had children up to this point, probably be in a state of panic over not being able to pass on my genes. That's probably because my ego tells me my genes are way too cool to fizzle out. ;)
Other than that...it's hard to say. Today's modern fictional vampire is, for the most part, endlessly rich, so there would be nothing material I would want for. That, I would think, would eventually become painfully obvious that materialism is a hollow endeavor...filling our inner holes with outer things...so, I believe a spiritual tension would arise.
That said...and I hope this doesn't go over the religious bounds here...I think that I would be terrified to let go of knowing that there would at least be a possibility of being forgiven for the things I had done up to that point. Because after that point, it's all about being a seductive leech that survives off the death of other people. And, since physical immortality is a joke anyway because the sun will eventually explode, I would be beyond terrified to go to the feet of God after my time would be up here on earth.
So...I'd regret not contributing to the gene pool, and fear losing grace.
My THAT would have to be everything in my life.... the sun the rain, the cool evenings/nights, my granddaughter, just the finale realization that I could not ever be held again or eat real food or anything that being ALIVE allows us to do... :)
It would be a total regret ... all in all...
My "that" would be all the small things that make the pain go away. Such as human contact, and for me, animal contact
I would regret loosing my friendships with people I love and care about.
Knowing my luck, that would be my eyesight...Really though, more important to me is my appreciation of life, if I lived forever, I know I wouldn't appreciate each day if I knew the next would come no matter what.
I want my mortality, I want to be able to die some day, just like everything else on this planet.
Definitely the real food and drink thing. I can't think of anything else I'd miss that much.
my reeses peanut butter cups "god I love those little choclate covered cups of peanut butter greatness"
I would miss the taste of food and other human pleasures.
It's amazing how many of you are mentioning the basic things we all take for granted....
...I have already missed so much.
Honestly, ultimately, there is no "THAT" that I would regret exchanging for immortality -- eternal youth and beauty -- the ability to learn and experience as much as I wished. I do not believe in a deity, so there is no fear of judgment. It seems reasonable to expect that I could still enjoy human companionship, sex, etc., and I could easily do without food, but oh, how I would miss the sun....
For me, that "that" would have to be my family and those friends closest to me over the years.
'fear of losing grace'.... BIG one. That's actually the thing I think about too. Good thing this is only fictional :P As the modern human vampire seems to be able to maintain any religion.
The things that I thought I would or felt I could have accomplished.
If I embraced something then there is no looking back with regrets. Thsi is because i then choose this as the path my life goes . If u have regrets then it is not the choosen path for u
I would miss hearing the words of others.. of learning of new things.. of not being able to share my thoughts.. and most definately the ability to share ones passions with another.
to see my son is what "that" means to me. to never be able to see my sons face again scares me to death
ladygoddessaries, why wouldn't you be able to share words and passions? As far as I have ever read... humans and vampires have always continued to share those things.
For me, it would have to be the few closest friends that I have in life. Without them, there is no escape for me. They are there in good times and the bad, no matter what.
are you sure your life flashes before your eyes, or is that h=just some old wives tale?
GordSicle, I am sure I am speaking of fiction here... as I stated in the subject line. So seeing as how I am writing the story, no wives tale involved ;)
To me it would be my loved ones parents nephews and nieces and great n&n and kinkykuntox
I think for me it would be that human connection. To feel beyond the reach of humanity and never being able to experiencing it again.
That's been my whole appeal to vampires. In these stories... you hear of these people that want so very bad to escape this world and everything holding them back and causing them pain... only for them to not be able to survive as vampires without that humanity once again. Poetic justice.
Well if it was family, or people that you missed it could be possible to take them on the same path as yourself perhaps...
It would be my children and the reality that there was never anything to ever need to escape.
You would miss vulnerability? you would still be vulnerable .. just less so.
If you were missing too much, would you end up staying as a ghost?
A friend of mine once told me it was the inadequette feeling of being only human, that feeling of being vulnerable, weak and powerless. The satisfaction of knowning you are going to die, and the fear of not knowing when.
Personally, there is really nothing in this world that concerns me, I am just here for the ride. Since I am under the belief of universal progress, then it is what it is as the universe unfolds my world before me.
Nothing like being a secure individual in an insecure world, watching the dramas unfold around you and learning from the discord whether the drama ends in a fair play or a quarrelsome form.
Live and let learn, and learn from the penalties of others. From universal experiance we grow. mortal or immortal. Save for the mortal coil is just a tad bit more insecure.
I would miss death the most. Living forever and watching your loved ones die has to be the hardest part. You know you can never leave and rest forever.
I'm not concerned about leaving anything or anyone behind. This is a personal adventure, and for me would outweigh other considerations.
Besides I don't see that one would be denied access to children or family, only the circumstances would change.
yikes! we're talking hypotheticals here, not issuing invitations :P
Nope... but to all these real vampies on VR... they got yo numba. :P There's a good one, no drama, no baggage!
*Chuckles* Damnit Images, I rather loath long distance calls...
Whew! Vampires love drama. Besides the blud, that's their main attraction to humans. Soulshroude, don't waste your frequent flyer miles on lil ol me. :P
You're right... they do love drama, but they wouldn't have to worry about a whining newly turned vampire.
There's no whining in bloodmother vampire land. Bitching, maybe.
Well that's a vampire regret then, we didn't get to escape our bitching.
:P
LIFEBLOOD -
I think vulnerability is another thing that lets us know we're alive.
My "that' would be, losing the fear! The fear of failing, losing, dying... all of the things we fear, that challenge us and keep us going from day to day.
So there would be no real challenge in being an unstoppable, immortal being. I get ya.
time to learn everything and see all the worlds wonders
i have alot of thats i would miss.
my kids
my family
chocolate
sun
wind
flowers
I think what I would miss the most was being with my friends and family. But I would also miss out on all the fun and joy that life has to offer. Going outdoors, being close to nature, feel the wind of my face, playing music and fall asleep in my husbands arms.
The one thing I would regret the most, is all the little things that are left unsaid.
I am not a person who is skilled in talking about my feelings, all of them so sometimes I simply walk away with the line "I am fine, there is nothing wrong" It is a bad quality and I admit that so I have a lot of things I would like to say and it would be hard for me not to have time to do it all.
that- would be the lose of my self control when they-needed me the most.
Other than family, which most of us would miss.I would say the little things like daylite and good food.
Many of the world's religions and belief systems teach us not to desire or grow attached to material items. Many times they will teach us to give our material items to people who need them more. But in the greater sense, that just prepares us of the afterlife.
I have not seen anyone in the thread, post they they will miss material possesions. When it comes to the end material things don't seem to mean much.
THAT for me would be that there only was what you see, no "other" no hidden order, no beyond, just a meaningless existence for no apparent reason.
The knowing that their will be no second chances to make things right.
Milk chocolate...
Let me elaborate. The sense of being and the senses that let us be beings.
Tasting the food, feeling the warm fur of the kitten, smelling the forest air, seeing the brilient colors of nature, hearing music that makes your soul leap.
My THAT would be my my husband I cant live with out him
..my 'that' would be the opportunity to taste the next morning and all that it offers: good and bad.
..I say that, as someone who has known real bad depresion.
..the next morning.
My THAT would have to be taste. Taste of food and taste of life.
What point would there be in living a life that has no end? For me the greatest part of life is knowing that there IS an end. I give myself goals and I would miss having to achieve those goals. What would the point be if you have forever?
The glitch is you never really know what you would miss untill it's too late ... I'd miss going bald gracefully.
that for me would be the slite trace of human emtion that remains in me
Since this is fictional... I think of the last episode of Moonlight. Mick St. John found a temporary cure for vampirism and was human for a short time. The first thing he did was pack in the food, and sleep in a bed, hitting the snooze :) He said vampires couldn't tatse or digest food.
All of the things that I planned on doing, desired to do, and was not able to experience and/or accomplish.
The unfinished business of life.
If I had to choose for real of course it would be my daughter as the most missed.
But in pretend, if I was just writing a story, it would be my sence of touch .
The "that" for me would be my daughter. Just couldnt live without her and never would want too.
there should be no regrets in accepting the dark gift if you want it in the first place then you should have enough knowledge of it to know if you want it or not before you accept it
I would miss being able to be in the sun. Even though I don't really go out into the sun as it is I still enjoy it sometimes. Not being able to eat human food(or so some legends say). I wouldn't be able to grow old with my lover or share the same pain as we got older. I would always look that way I am now and never age.
My (that) would be the opportunity to learn. I know that there is always a light somewhere at the end of every tunnel, tho, so I would hope I was never driven to that extreme.
