I was born on a Saturday and have had paranormal expiriences....I don't know more this is the first time I am reading such thing.
The only day to haunt vampires eh? So a Saturday could be spent haunting for vampires hehe?
It's always nice to see something different.
I'm not sure about vampires sleeping in on saturdays, but I imagine that folklore had to start somewhere.
I would think that if they did this, it would be too predictable...everyone would know that vamps are on sabbatical that day, so the fear factor would be lessened greatly.
I doubted whether anyone on VR had come upon this in reading up on vampires. I had never seen any thread mention this in the years I have been on this site. It's something new, something undiscussed.
I kind of have to wonder whether a person born on a day of the week could actually seen ghosts or vampires. If that was the case wouldn't a lot more people be able to see them?
Wouldn't it have already been proven somehow because of the natural curiosity of man?
So would conditions of a birth determine such things?
The idea of someone born on a Saturday having some type of supernatural insight isn't that far fetched.
It's rumored that the seventh son of a seventh son is clairvoyant.
But do you think it might be the same, misterstikki?
I don't think it's that far-fetched but I can't really decide whether I believe in it or not. I'm sitting on the fence here and know it. Because I think, as I have said, if it's true then more people should be able to see ghosts and vampires or at least ghosts since most people don't believe in vampires anymore.
Come on, people! Stop with the BS replies of "I've never heard of that before" or "Interesting information!"
It's tiring! I want to have a real discussion on it! It's easy to call a dominar in to clear those posts but I don't really want to.
This is a new topic on here and I want to see what becomes of it!!!
If you believe it could be possible, why?
If you don't, say why also...
Is it that hard?
After I came to this post the first time I was looking stuff like this on google and i found a web page on different gifts that are supposed to be involved with being born on certain days of the week. I am posting the link here if anyone would like to check it out.
http://www.mystical-www.co.uk/time/days.htm
As far as having certain gifts limited to one day of the week, I do not believe that. I think that alot of people have the gift to see ghosts and things of that nature. They could not have all been born on the same day.
And as far as vampire folklore goes I have always read that they sleep before dawn and sleep through out the day. If they did sleep only on saturdays , that would be predictable and very unsafe for them I would think.
But this is just my opinion.
Due to there not being any statistics to speak of, we can only rest on opinions. Mine is: I personally don't put much faith in this theory.
I can't honestly see how what day of the week you were born dictates your supernatural abilities ...much like the 7th son thing. Maybe I'm too skeptical...pessimistic...I don't know. Maybe I'm just too much of a realist and I like to be shown things instead of blindly following along, ya know?
I just really can't say that I put much stock in it :)
I also have not heard this bit of folklore and would love to know where it started.
Personally, I do not believe in mythical/fictional vampires. I believe that some of the folklore must have just started based on religious superstitions as part of your post mentions Saturday as the end of the week.
As an aside, as an energy vampire, I happen to love sleeping in on Saturdays, but that could be because I am a full time student working close to 70 hours a week. Frankly, I will grab the chance to sleep in any time I can.
Okay, maybe this will actually start the discussion.
morbidcuriousity, you say that vampires only sleeping on Saturday would be too predictable, I actually disagree, sleeping everyday is even more predictable, if it is only on Saturday then they can be sure that they are in a safe location correct. But if they only sleep on Saturday then what do they do during daylight hours? If we are going on the assumption that they can not enter sunlight, what do they do during the day? If we assume that they are able do go into the day, do they just blend in and lead ordinary lives or do they actually wonder and track their prey for the night.
"The day is also a general day of prayer for the dead, because it was on a Saturday that Jesus lay dead in the tomb."
This comes from the lovely Wikipedia when doing a search on Saturday. It basically isolates this day as the day to honor the dead for the Eastern Orthodox church. From my understanding of ancient times the church basically ruled the world, and if Saturday was the day for the dead then a vampire, neither living nor dead would go against everything that the day went for. So maybe that is where it came from.
As for my opinion I am still on the fence, I still need to do more research and find more sources.
I have to agree with fyrestrike. We were talking last night about this and came to agree that it would be to the advantage of the vampire.
Yes, it would be predictable. But vampires were reclusive in nature anyway so who would really be around to notice?
As for what they would do during the daytime, I have been trying to find some of the myths to post in this thread that contain the Saturday variable.
It does not matter what day you kill a vampire i do not think. But doesn't everyone sleep in on Saturdays.. I don't really think though that sat is a good day to kill a vampire.. I think it is just false.
"Saturday was the preferred day to hunt vampires as that was the day they had to remain in their coffins."
I have never heard of this. I wonder where it actually started.
If I had a coffin I would come out on whatever day I want to as long as it is dark out. So I guess it would be whatever night I want. (I have a skin sensitivity to the sun since I was born.)
"It was also believed that someone born on a Saturday could see a vampire when it was otherwise invisible."
I didn't actually know that vampire had the ability to be invisible. This is something I would like to see more posted about.
I'm also thinking that Saturday was chosen, since it's the 7th (last) day of the week...after killing a vampire, you can go to church on Sunday and be blessed for it...?
i wonder if this helps or has any relevance
"Saturday is a good day of the week to perform spells and rituals involving spirit communication, meditation, psychic self-defense, binding, and locating lost things or missing persons."
http://www.angelfire.com/goth/paganslounge02lrc/dow.html
Wow That is very interesrting. I wonder also how this could get started? h well, lol. What would happen if everyone orn on a Saturay got together? haha in the same room? And then throw a few vampires in the mix? What would they see?
I personally don't think that. I think everyday of the week is special, cause all humans are born with at least a small amount of gifts to their name. They are just taught that it is bad and that t is evil. It is stomped out of them at an early age. Sad, cause we should embrace everything that we are given at birth.
That we were born on a certain day has nothing to do with it I think. As for vampires being vunrable just that one day, why? It makes no sense. I can only go looking for more about it though before make up my mind compleely though.
Thanks Tiff, for an interesting topic, and a new one at that! :)
I was born on a Saturday and had paranormal expiriences but I don't think it has to do with vampires.
I have never seen ghosts or vampires, I have seen weird stuff though but I myself I am unsure of what I've seen.
However it is true that days of the week get associated with Spells and it is the 6th or 7th number of the week (depending when the week really starts, for some it is Sunday for others Monday).
It seems mostly a superstition to me because Saturday is before Sunday, the day before Sunday which is seen as the holy day by Christians, so Saturday is the holy days's eve so it's seen as the best for vampires and ghosts hunts?
So no wonder why Saturday is often seen as the best day for banishing spells.
And please post only posts relevant to the topic.
I don't know.
Maybe Sunday was the day of rest for the vampire hunters? Maybe it was so they could ask for forgiveness on Sunday? There could be a lot of possibilities.
Maybe the vampires were said to rest on Saturday because a village or group of people were wondering were some others were disappearing to...
I'm trying to find some more answers online but it's proving to be hard to find out about.
i've actually never heard that about saturdays. I wonder why saturdays in particular beside any other day of the week.
I am looking too, but it is not proving anything for or against Saturdays. Haha
I don't think that what day of the week you were born on has any thing to do with you being able to see or experience paranormal things. I think that if this were the case alot more people would be able to see ghosts or vampires and you would hear of such things more often than what you do now. There may be some truth to this because all myhts/legends had to start some where right? Or maybe this legend came about simply because people were so superstitious back then they were sure something supernatural was bound to happen on the last day of a week.
According to a popular poem poem, Saturday's child is said to work hard for a living, but they didn't say anything about the supernatural!
haha
I do believe that if you have a "gift" for being able to see ghosts (and perhaps even vampires, if you believe the mythical type exists) then it is something you are born with. However, I'm not sure if the day you are born would determine such things. After all, zodiac readings aren't always correct for all people born under the same sign... so everyone born on a Saturday isn't necessarily going to bear a certain trait... just as anybody born on any other day isn't restricted from bearing that trait, either!
I think that everyone is unquie and special and it has nothing to do with zodiac or the days of the week or the month you were born.
After all, those are manmade things that have no fruit of bearing on the spirit. :)
I personally, do not think the day of the week really matters. I was born on a Tuesday, and I know many others born throughout the week who all have special gifts and have had extraordinary experiences.
Saturn was the same as the Black Sun of Chaldean astrologers, the Lord of Death at the nadir of the underworld, representing the sun at his lowest aspect in the midwintersolstice. Saturn's worship included the wearing of black clothing, burning of opium, goat's fat and urine. Hmm.
As a rule the Lord of Death was both a god and a demon, like Shiva the Destroyer. At Saturn's festival, death and atonement were featured. A sacrificial victim was chosen to represent both the god himself and the king-surrogate.. Though the real killing of the victim was replaced by symbolic killing, the festival was never abandoned, and in Christian times bcame part of the Midwinter Carnival.
Saturn gave his name to Saturday. Saturn was identified with the seventh planetary sphere, whose astrological influences partook of "saturnine" qualities such as somberness, darkness, coldness.
"the black Saturn, the ghost of the dead sun, the demoniac elder god."
from Barbara Walker, Encyclopedia of Myths & Secrets
According to a popular poem, Saturday's child is said to work hard for a living- hehe that's surely me, but actually many are like that.
As for Sturn it influences me twice, as a Capricorn sign and I guess as a Saturday child.
So it could explain many of my weird behaviours hehe.
As for forgiveness the day after, it could make sense, it could either mean that the vampire would repent or even the hunters in case they have killed.
So Saturday for hunting and Sunday to repent.
Sort of like in the modern days, Saturdays clubbing/bar hopping, then Sunday to church, at least for the believers.
Well your book says it's a widespread belief....I don't think that is the case as no-one who has posted so far has been aware of it.
Nor can I recall any book or film mentiong it.
Some other beliefs that could have led to the Saturday/vampire belief:
Black Sun - Saturn (Saturday) the solar god entombed. Lord of Death hidden in a secret pyramid of blackest darkness at the earth’s core.
Saturn addressed thusly: "Lord Saturn the cold, the dry, the harmful . . . crafty sire who knowest all wiles, who art deceitful, who causest prosperity or ruin.”
This hidden area where the Black Sun dwelled symbolized an ancient custom of initiation, wherein the one seeking enlightenment descended into the womb of the earth.
Nearly every ancient temple included a pit in the inner chamber, representing the mundus or womb for rebirth.
Vampires experience a rebirth.
According to Agrippa, the last day of the week, the day of Saturn or Saturday “hath correspondence with the last end of life, and is ruled by Saturn which carries the sickle of death.”
Perhaps it was seen that vampire after a week of hunting would return to their graves to rest and regain their strength, but where would they sleep during the rest of the week? I have heard many stories that a vampire must return to rest in their birthing soil after a period of time, but I have always heard it is related to Dracula. It’s an interesting topic as is. The end of a cycle…..but would all vampires cycle at the same time and why?
It was probably more widespread in certain areas and during older times. I've been trying to find something that at least states around what period of time that the belief was most profound. I'm thinking of also looking up a lot more different things linked to it to see if I can find it out that way too. Use the ability to see ghosts angle, instead of the day to kill vampires.
I've found a lot of different things lately that I've never seen in a film or read in a book.
I wonder if the "kill a vampire on Saturday" thing is in any way related to the Inquisition and the persecution of Jews and witches? Reading about the lunar cycle.
Seven-day weeks extend back to the lunar calendar. Lunar Sabbaths were kept every 7th day by the Assyrians and Babylonians, who thought it was bad luck to do anything during the changes of the moon.
Then there's the whole Jewish Sabbat or Sabbath which is on Saturday. There is no good reason that I've been able to find for witches calling their celebrations a sabbath, as well.
If Saturdays were thought unlucky, and a Dark Lord was involved who was gradually thought of as evil, and Jews celebrated on Saturdays, and witches called their celebrations Sabbaths ---- I could see some madhatter Inquisitor mulling it over, and jumbling it so a new mythos is born to explain to the persecutions to the masses.
I would think it would be the opposite. Sat. nite leads into sunday am..time for church. Can not work on sunday thats a big no-no.
That's why you do your vampire hunting/killing on a Saturday, so you can then ask for forgiveness and get a blessing on Sunday...
I myself don't believe Saturday would be a day to do so, however Sunday might be.
If we go with the way of who did the Salem Witch Trials [the Church], Sunday would seemingly be a better day as the Church did carry out vampire huntings as well.
Day of rest and all.
Just came across this entry which ties in with my supposition above re. the inquisition, jews, witches, the Sabbath and vampires:
The Blood Libel legend contended that the jews engaged in ritualistic murder. Medieval Christians, a superstitious lot by definition, suspected jews used witchcraft and black magic, concluding that they conducted murder of Christians in order to drink their blood in a parody of the Christian mass, or for other magical purposes. The blood was sometimes believed to have been used to poison wells, and these poisoned wells were thought to have brought the Black Death.
Vampires were also blamed for the Black DEath.
From Mythology, Myths,Legends & Fantasies, 2003, Janet Parker and Julie Stanton, editors.
Just another way to scare the modern VAMPIRE.. I doubt very highly theres a lets go kill a vampire day.. vampires are thought of to be quick, with keen senses.. iif anything they would be hunting you first.. how could anybody get close enough to do so.. it dont make any sense..
Nah. I don't think so. There shouldn’t be a relationship between people being born on certain days...and having more experiences with the paranormal or vampires. Fate takes care of those things... Each person is either more or less in tune with the world…and fate, again, decides that. But also working on certain things can increase your ability to harvest certain gifts…
could be that the people have jobs during the week and saturday is the best day cause it is when they have off.. That would make more sense in this day and age.. I do agree with what someone posted about it being maybe because sunday is church and they ask for forgiveness. It could also be that Saturdays are days that many people party and are out all night so it's easier to find them But this would also be based on this day and age..
I don't believe that certain days of the week have any bearing on wether one is open to seeing ghosts or anything.
My two kids and I were all born on different days of the week and we all have the ability to see and communicate with spirits.
well i gees it would make sence for vamps to rest on saterdays.i mean for exaple us christians we rest on sundays because it is the sabath day so i gess saterdays would be a sabath day for a vampire lol....
Hmm I have trouble with days of the week depicting someone's abilities and character. I was born on a Wednesday! But I have had many paranormal experiences and I have my own unique talents on the clairvoyance side of things.
In another thread I just read a post where it quoted the Greeks to have said that Friday was the day Vampires can't come out to play and was the best day to kill them lol.
For many Saturday is the seventh day of the week, the Sabath, as in the Jewish faith, many have seen Sunday as the first day, not the seventh. In Christianity s attempt to move away from it s Jewish roots, Sunday was adopted, instead of Saturday, used by the first Christians.
just made me think of something
if saturday is the seventh day, how come we don't rest on saturday being that according to the "Holy Bible" we are supposed to live godly lives and follow in his teachings......
we rest on sunday which we use as the first day, blasphomy.......just my opinion
so is saturday the sixth or the seventh day?
I didn't know that there was a certain day to kill vampires.
Just figured it was whenever you saw one ha.
-Juggalette givin MMFWCL
Ya kill on saturday & then repent on Sunday for killing. For thou shall not kill. PS throw in extra $$$ in the basket to clean your soul. : )
I don't think that they would have a certain day of rest...lol
A certain day to be born on to be more likely to see ghost ect. may be possible in my opinion, because of astrology alighnments and such possibly at the day and time of birth ect....
If being born on a specific day of the week gave you certain characteristics, or powers, whatever.... I think most people would celebrate a weekly zodiac rather than the monthly one. I was born on a Thursday and don't believe it means anything more than December 25th fell on a Thursday that year.
There may have been people who were more intuitive to spirits or other things in their surroundings.... there might have been a coincidence of them being born on the same day of the week. I think if at anytime in history, they took that idea seriously....... children born on Saturdays might not have been allowed to live if they could have a connection to the dead like that. Another witch hunt!
I agree with Sbetee, If there was a lets go kill a vampire day then more than likely we wouldn't be here today.
that is the day of the sabbath i think that is why they use that in movies and books.
I always considered it just another day, but after reading the responses here in this question I have come to realize that it might be different. Here is a snip-it from a web site on correspondences, this I thought captured alot of what was being said in this post.
SATURDAY: Black, the planet and god Saturn. It is associated with magic dealing with: banishing, change, death, motivation, reincarnation, understanding and wills.
http://www.spelwerx.com/day_correspondences.html
wow.... reading all the post i figure there maybe be something in there along the truth but i doubt that vampires were forced to sleep on saturdays....
and as for being able to see ghost and vampires if you were born on saturday, what about the other days of the week what do people born on those days get?
.... im hoping a sandwich " im thinking arby`s "
...lol
