The lochness monster was first spotted in 1933 by a london surgeon. It has been spotted and photographs have been taken. Is it really a monster or is it a hoax?, but there are a lot of stories about it.

The reason I believe in it is because there are sooo many marine animals that haven't been discovered yet. Now that the ice caps are melting there's an entirely new ecosystem that we never knew existed until now. I think that it is very possible that it exist. There is so much area that we cannot see under water that even if we did try to find it, it could have went right past us and we could not have known.

This is the fish you're talking about

Photobucket

A fish, until recently thought to have become extinct millions of years ago, has surfaced off Indonesia.

BBC Science Correspondent James Wilkinson: "Distant cousin of land animals"
Scientists found the rare fish on a market slab after it was caught by a local fisherman - thousands of miles from its only known habitat.

The spectacular find is causing scientists to review what they know about the coelacanth and ask more questions.

Coelacanth were thought to have died out until some were found in 1938 in and around the Comoros Islands in the western Indian Ocean near Madagascar.

Since then that was thought to be the only surviving population until the Indonesian specimens were caught - 6,000 miles away.

Ancient ancestors: Coelacanth fossils
Marine biologist Mark Erdman said: "It's a spectacular discovery in the sense that it certainly opens the possibility of all types of other fish and sea monsters that might some day pop up."

The fish, often described as a "living fossil", was discovered by a scientist's wife walking through a fish market in Sulawesi island, Indonesia.

But the fantastic find was almost thrown back into the sea by the shark fisherman who caught it.

He said: "It had bad, oily fish. We didn't think we could eat it but I'm glad we decided to keep it."

Now scientists are hoping to catch further coelacanth to help answers basic questions about its life and history such as how long they live and what predators they face.

We are told by marine biologists that there are many uncatalogued species in the seas, the deepest oceans which are only now being investigated, through increased access via improved technology, so therefore, the Loch Ness Monster, although it has been the subject of hoaxes, etc, there is no reason to write it off at all, in light of this...

The myth dates back from the 7th century when a man called St. Columba was swimming across the loch when he was attacked by a monster. They found it in his writtings and he wrote that he was trying to save someones life in the loch.

Totaly. One of the reasons I added it is because the scientist quoted about how it leads to proof that there could still be existance of other fish and monsters.

the best nessie movie i saw was the water horse... i do believe nessie to be real a prehistoric type creature. some photos show no back grounds so the object as nessie cant be measured i cant remember a set of sisters took some pics they thought to be nessie and when blown up it was just a duck and another group took pics of broken off logs this is a tuff call ...but he/she/it will always be real for me

CORRECTION, the first recorded sighting of the Loch Monster was (I think around) the 1400s, by St Columba. Although I think it might have been even earlier, 12-1300s, but memory fails me. You mean the first photo taken.

I recently sailed on Loch Ness, and took this completely 100% genuine absolutely no editing done at all photo...

Alright believe what you like :p but I believe there is/was a monster. It's a totaly plasible idea, so why not? ;)

Oops *reads Magic25UK's post* yeah I thought perhaps even earlier, memory really does fail me, can't even remember when St Columba lived. 400AD rings a bell, which is probably where I got 1400 from LOL... err but anyway, considerably before that bloke took that photo. If that's the case, it's either a really old monster, or it reproduces in a way similar to that seen in the film, 'The Water Horse' :)

celtic folklore described the nessie as the water horse or kelpie.when the road was built by the loch the sighting started becoming known ,though local people have always known about it.half of the sightings was on land. Also loch ness has a ghost ship.nessie turns up in other lochs and when they where building a dam for an HEP station the divers came up in a hurry saying they where being followed by nessie creatures and they would not go down again.also most large cold water lakes around the world have the same animal sightings.i saw an awsome ichtheosaur jumping out of the water on youtube.a friend of mine says there is a really good book on sea serpents by a french marine biologist which included detailed sightings round the world.ive got In search of lake monsters, which is really good.

Here's a website I found dedicated to "Nessie". The information provided is a collected mixture of lore, documented facts, pictures, drawings about Loch Ness and and its most famous resident. It's whimsical, amusing and informative.

The Legend of Nessie, the Ultimate and Official Loch Ness Monster site

Do I believe in the Loch Ness Monster?.......I do. There are many species of creatures within the depths of waters that are descended from prehistoric beginnings which we have not yet discovered and have yet to identify. "Nessie" is one of them.

I think it is definitely a possibility. For instance, scientists thought that all life forms had to have sunlight to survive. Now that we have the technology to go many fathoms deeper, they have discovered many new species that live in the darkest depths. There have been creatures discovered who are totally blind, and rely upon "chemosynthesis" which has to do with receiving energy from chemicals rather than energy from the sun. Who's to say this "monster" isn't a throwback of some sort?

Indeed Ade. It happens because of distress or what have you, as far as nessy the prehistoric creature is concerned there is a fine line on what it can take! and that we do not know.

as for the point about darkness and life, yes it is totally possible that it could live without sunlight and draw its energy from chemicals so we would need to take this into consideration, if we did want to keep this animal in captivity.

Myths and Legends often have some basis in fact, no matter how tenuous, and this is true, just as the Area 51 of roswell makes money from it all, so do the people of this area have a 'vested interest', but, underneath the waters could be anything, indeed...;)

Probably the most famous picture of the Loch Ness monster was the "surgeon's photo" supposedly taken by Colonel Robert Wilson in 1934, which you showed at the beginning of the thread. It shows a long, thin neck rising above the water connected to a hump-like body. This photo is thought to be a fake, though, after the confession of Christian Spurling who helped build the model monster that was photographed. He admitted the hoax shortly before he died in 1993 at age 90.

Most of the later pictures and movies and such have also been shown to be fakes. However, just because the evidence isnt real doesnt mean it doesnt exist...at least within your hearts and minds. Enjoy the possibility! :P

I believe it might be real and still existing down there. It is true what Radu said, considering todays technology, it had to be located already successfully, so why cant we determine this precisely. It might be that the creature existed, but was hunted down by scientific teams for further research, killed, studied, or just captured, and held captive as a rare specimen of biological life. There might be this possibility that the creature is very successful hiding as well, and it might be as well, that there is no such creature at all at the first place, but a hoax, tourist story/attraction.

If it truly does exist it's more than likely a simple survivor of the dinosaur era. It's not unheard of for some sort of creature from then to still be around.

I would be happy going scuba-dive through the lake, in hope finding something, but I am afraid getting eaten. What if it is really real! Scarry.

Grey picture

It turns out to be a dog with a stick in its mouth.
The owner has throw a stick into the loch for his dog.
The picture was taken in the 1930's and the owner had tryed to blur his dog out of the pic to make the stick stand out more, because its darker, and to convince people that it's the loch ness monster.

Wow that picture = epic fail
LOL!

Anyways, I have been to Scotland but not Loch Ness.
The eco system in Scotland is fabulous, with red squirrels and bats and things that you wouldn't find anywhere else!

To be honest, Loch Ness is God knows how many times the size of the Grand Canyon ~ who knows what's in there?!

Lol I wonder what monster hunters would say if I sent them my photo, and how long it would take them to realise that I created it in about five seconds with the paint brush tool ;)
There is a man who is living in a caravan on the shores of the Loch who has dedicated his life to discovering the monster. He's been there for a while now so eh, let's all just wish the man good luck :)

As proven here, faking photographs is all too easy, especially now, but without basis somewhere, this Legend would not persist...;)

Maybe Nessie is a dinosaur. Remember that fish that they thought was extinct? And remember when they found a ton of them? Nessie could very well be part of quite a few dinosaurs left. They have a very nifty gift and habit of being able to hid themselves. lol... A lot of that lake is too deep for us to go too. There are hundreds of caves and I'm pretty sure that quite of few of those caves lead out to the sea somewhere..... They just have to find which ones.. lol.. Whether or not Nessie is real is not for any of us to say. If she/he/it is real though, I say we leave her alone. These animals hide for a reason and they've lived as long as they have because of it. Let them live in peace. What if someone acually finds her. Her life is ruined... She'll be captured, studied, people will gawk at her and invade her home, hoping to find more.. Let them be....
