As I'm getting ready to go and see if -I- can own a piece of local history:
http://www.kincaid.com/china/china.html
I wonder-- does anyone else here share the same fascination with local or wordly artifacts? What is it about a certain piece you own-- or could have owned but passed on? Do you still covet it? Worldly pocessions should not matter in the end, but what do -you- want to leave behind besides a corpse?
My most dearest object, is the crucifix that dangles from my neck.
I bought it the day I returned from Desert Storm. It has never been off my neck, and I am too paranoid to take it off.
That actually is a right nice piece, Dayryn...
Uhm... what do i want to leave behind.
Besides the shriveled little body wrapped in linnens... **ponders**
I want people to remember and talk about me. I dont think i really have something physical,,, everything relatively pertinant in the physical respect to me will be on.. or for that matter.. IN my body at time of ceremony.
But i think that memory and spoken word are more powerful than a candle stick thats 4oo yrs old... or a cup thats 3000...ect,ect...
Those things can be bought. The word "priceless" has always tickled me in that respect. "Oh gee, this Tiffany diamond encrusted SHOE worn by..." yadda yadda..." is absolutly PRICELESS, dah-ling..really..mmmhmmm..*stupid upper class grin ensues*"
Everything PHYSICAL can be bought, therefore the word priceless is null and void to me. I know the word, i used it often.
But to me.. the memory of who i was, no matter HOW Im remembered ( i think im diggin for the fact that i AM remembered through the years) is more priceless than a bleedin' shoe, m8.
Or whatever the object is...yadda yadda.
Nara- not belittling your objects of desire, here, babydoll... just my oppinion on MY life..hehe
Ima shut up now.
Latas=)

Yes I have a love of history, and historic artifacts as they all hold story, and another’s touch. I imagine how objects could chronicle history, like that of a diary I feel. Even that of a door could narrate such account of ones life and the sorrowful neglect it now feels as now it squeaks on its hinges, and of all the comings and goings of all those whom passed through it. If my passion weren’t photography I would have been an Anthropologist/Archeologist as I comprise an affection of accounts of the ancient.
well I collect medieval weaponry.....if only it could tell me it's story....fly on the wall style
In the same boat as Dayryn...after returning from Mozambek Africa(spelling error probly) i got into sacrifical blades they used along with their jewelry.
My dad owns this *tiny* French dictionary he recieved while he was backpacking in France during the 70's. I know it's not very old or worth anything but it has an awesome story behind it that my dad has told me.
Oh yeah, I forgot. We have this OLD saber, I have no clue quite when it was made, or how old it actually is, but I know it's quite old. I'll have to check with my dad. My dad has a bunch of cool stuff, I guess it goes along with his fascination with history, but I guess if I had to buried with something of importance I own with history it would have to be the saber. I mean...how more kick a** can you get lying dead, in your coffin with a saber. Although then again my kids could sell it on ebay...but I don't have kids so it might not matter at all...
Truth be told, collecting historical artifacts is my own little obsession. It can mean so much and tell such good stories.
I'm glad to see another one of my threads has caught itself some interest. :)
As for my mother and I, we secured 10 terra cotta(sp?) warrior statues from the Burial mound display of the great emperor. Several different sizes, etc-- $50US for the box of them. However a few ladies pooled their cash together and got the first dibs on 3'-tall warriors-- for a ripe $500US.
I was rathere interested in these little koi fish-- but I know the person who actually got them was the one who took care of the Koi for the 10 years the little theme park was in business-- so I'm rather glad he got them instead. He seemed lost, poor dear. I just wish I knew some Chinese to interact with him-- ask him if he has a favorite spot to sit and feed them, etc.
*sighs*
of all the things i have collected over the years one of my favs is a boat in a tiny tobasco bottle a cuban gave me while i was there in 94. odd i know but how many americans ever been to cuba?
ok, great thread, now let's all learn about the freaky Morey!
I collect Royal Doulton - in particular a set serial number C1428 from the 1920's
I have a seriously large collection of fossils from 1,000,000 bc +. My personal favourite peices, being ones I collected myself of marine life from Sciliy on my last visit there in 1995.
I collect antique furniture from japan, china and indonesia. I have 9 peices todate and have one on it's way from Indonesia due for delivery in January
Owning history is good and bad i suppose (i have a sword collection but their all imitations) but you can actually own a piece of the berlin wall and on the negative side you can also own dust/rubble from the 9/11 attacks (hey I don't sell/endorse it but it happens)
*raises hand sheepishly* I have never been to Cuba, the guy that does my hair is from Cuba. Apparently it's pretty beautiful.
Oh yeah, I don't know how old this is but my mom happened on it during the early 70's (yes old parents)when she was young, and broke. On someone's front porch they had this wedding dresser (if you look on top of it it has these bells and ribbons carved into it) and they let her buy it off them for 20 dollars. Come to find now, it's worth a lot more (Again. I'd have to ask). But, I doubt I can be buried with that or what not. I need to start finding my own "historical" things to collect, some nice peices.
Ummmmmmm.......I think the only thing I can think of is my dad's sharp, silver sword, its been in the family the ages and my dad said someone in the family had killed someone with it....so I going to be happy to own it.
I collect scrimshaw. And dolphin stuff. So scrimshander dolphins would hit both of those buttons. :)
Morey, I collect Indonesian furniture as well. There is this shop downtown it's called Murlen, they have all of this exquisite furniture. My house looks like an indonesian faire ::laughs:: Go you!
Great Thread! I love memories so picking up stuff while traviling has always put a dent on me, I love everything from greek jewelry(Sands of time antiques) and spear heads, I would not want to own it but I would love to hold the spear head that peirced the side of jesus, It gives me weird vibes even thinking of it!
I forgot, another thing....I have a penny collection, of course added onto my dad's (My parents just have a lot of cool pieces)....I doubt I'd want to be buried with pennies though...."Here lies Sara....Don't try to rob her grave she's literally worth pennies."
Mortallover darling, you awrful tease! how in the hell am I going to get to chicago to shop!
If any one in Sydney has a new location for me, drop me a line!!!!
**Light'ning has just struck my brain**
I do collect Tarot decks....
meh... hehehe
I started to collect more and more semi-precious stones as of late. Must be a Wiccan thing. I plan on looking or certain piece to go with my mink fur coat-- slightly ratty, by or a coat from the 30s-40s what can one expect?
I have collected a few rather antique books other than my weapons.....
I have a copy of paradise lost printed in 1887
and a few collections by john milton over 60 years old
I collect crap.. all sorts of shit.. I fight the pack rat tendency..but i loose.
i purposely collect irish lusterware, fenton art glass, children, husbands, and stray animals.
I love history so I go antiquing quite often. I own a velvet dusty rose wing chair from the 1800's, an egyptian sacrifical dagger that I picked up from a Rennaissance faire, ton's of jewllery , and ornaments all over my room as well.
...i have collected bits and pieces of stuff that is of little worth to anyone but me; mementos of this and that, here and there, all with secret little stories attached to them all. one day they will be told to kids and grand kids and shared with good friends. it will all be so fun!
I collect Antique Books and maps (mainly Africa related)....I also have a strange Fascination for Camo from around the world.
Wow, interesting collections. :)
Here's a questio for you all: What -one piece- seems to define your collection?
For me it is a Map of Africa printed in 1864.....It was Hand Colored. Not to mention some of the names on it Crack me Up.
My favorite piece thus far is a monogrammed mink coat from the early 30s-40s, methinks. It was my adopted family's, and thus my grandmother's in that reguard. I should get it treated-- I love it.
I collect fossils, I have numerous finds, a couple include a 50,000 year old turtle shell and 36,000 yr old crocodile bone. Both of which i found myself. I also have numerous million yr old fossils and shells
Some of my most beloved artifacts are Opera Gloves. I have about 6 pairs, all varying in texture and color. I simply can;t get enough!
Are they -just- Opera gloves, or are they -antiques- silly? :D
...as I don't go to Operas very often (super expensive in FL for a college student, at least), and I'm not familiar in the era they may have been made, antique-wise.
Forgot to add one other thing I collect....hand woven cloth from Africa....ceratin pieces look really nice framed
i am a lover of ancient egypt. my most pirzed possession is a silver replica of the god Anubis that i wear around my neak. i got it from my first love from an antiques dealer a wile ago i too barly take it off for it means so much to me. i dont think i could bear it if it got lost or stolen. for me its what a lot of people will remember me by, not for the neclace but for my thirt for knowlege about ancient egypt
That's great!
I use to have the most fantastic Egyptian poster. It had a timeline of the great rulers, different day to day activities and dress, etc.
Sadly it got ruined somehow-- wet then ripped quite easily. Wish I still hjad it, though.
Ive been writing my diaries since I was eleven, and I always write as if I am talking to someone... in an idealistic world I would liek to leave them behind so people can find out more about me when Im gone, or find them in the future and find out what life was like in England at that time.
Hey, whose dying? You leave behind only what you un/intentionally drop there as you cruise through the days. F*ck death, live it the whole way or don't make any claims.
the only things in my life that i care about are my crappy car, my lovely fiance, and my bitching computer. But i do have a side note. Diamon will probably get in on this one, there is this.... Door in Spearfish Canyon. We do not know excactly what it is or when its from, it appears to be like a smoke house or something, but it is built into the side of a hill. I have a picture of it but its on my computer at home and i got no way of transfering it of yet to the internet I would like to post it in my portfolio because it is an interesting monument.
Sounds rather interesting, Devi. When you -do- get the picture up, let me know. :)
I think the journal thing is a good idea as well. :D
I've been trying to do more painting as of late. We'll see if a little watercolor will stand the test of time, hmm? ;)
I have a penchant for..
Egyptian Art/Dark Art
Boxes made of all kind of different materials
I enjoy coin collecting and have a few that are really interesting - I have a certified series of four coins from the Binion collection - the man who was killed for his hoard of silver ... I would really like one of those gold coins from the SS Republic the ship that was recently found and the gold now being offered in slabbed holders - but alas it is a bit expensive because they are so rare .... but I continue to put together sets of coins seeing that the challenge is there and the history that goes with it - I am working on a set of mercury dimes and have the short set completed in gem brilliant uncirculated - but the real challenge lies ahead seemingly that the 1916 d coin is a very rare item and commands a high price in all grades ....
I also like the design of the silver eagles that come out every year - the pure .999 ounce of silver with lady liberty on the front in her flowing gown - it is truly a very beautiful coin - I have the entire set from 1986- 2004 and is one of my first purchases every new year to get the latest one to keep the set updated - recently the 1996 coin has really took off - so I buy a few of those each time I visit a show or a dealer just to add a few to my collection for the investment ...
so a lot of my time on line is spent searching for treasures to add to my collection - and perhaps in time with some saving and good fortune Ill one day own one of those sunken gold pieces to add to my vault ...
I have a most offense piece of history - a fur coat made from a gorilla. (No one wanted it from my mothers estate.) I sometimes wonder who would kill a gorilla for its fur.
I collect china ducks.. goodness knows why, but its prolly because I am Piscean.
The Opera Gloves are antiques, Nara. They are all from antique shops that carry anything from top hats to furs, jewellery and furniture. I actually just got a new lacy pair for X-mas, that are fingerless. Very unique!
