this is my first attempt at a thread so please be nice.. Ive heard so many times the idea of deatiny i honestly dont know what to believe. Is destiny real, or just an elaborate illusion designed to destroy our freedom of choice?

You make your own destiny.

destiny is a mind setting it what you want to happen. so you lose a job and you say oh its destiny fuck that you know you never liked it there fore it destiny its ment to be but let someone you love die you ll never be like its destiny you would finesomething and or someone to blam to me destiny is a bunch of crock

People rely on desinty too much and when it doesn't make sense they say it doesn't exist. Not everyone does this but I think that destiny happens in a certain amount. You can change it but there are paths. *shrugs* I don't know that's just what I believe. I don't think you ever make "wrong" choices, what you do sets up your life but each tiny choice you make will change it.

to me destiny is like fate, so if you believe in fate then somewhat you believe in destiny

thanks, but u gotta admit alot of stuff hapens for no apperant reason... The job u got, or the person you met on the train whom you fell in love with... So is that all really just my sub-conscience working?

Destiny is for real yo! on the hizout! the other day i found me 10$!!!!! because i forgot to buy something in the supermarket and BAM right thier was like a 10$ bill!!!! i was like NO WAY! so i went to the liquir store and boughts me a Slurpee! but other than that destiny can be made as you go along! but "Other" forces can interfere i believe.

I see Destiny as the result of all your freedoms of choice, combined with the involuntary result of your fate (rather than one or the other like most peeps)

i believe our life choices our are own not pre decided for example i will not go kick a trash can over i dont know why i just will.

I would highly recomned watching Donnie Darko. It gives you a good idea of a certain form of destiny. I, myself, believe that your life is detined to turn out the way it does. At the end of the day, how do you know you can change it, if you don't know what the next day will bring. Hence, whatever happens in life is pre determined. Say, when i was 16, i got into the army and ended up getting killed, i would not be here today. But insted something happend pre determined which prevented me from joining, so i am still here....

Also there's that good old saying. That when a person dies a baby is born.. (there's somehthing to think about)

Destiny is there... if you beileve in it. If you don't it's all random acts of chance.
I believe in Destiny... I have had way too many things happen to me that have to be more than chance.

Deity I believe you've rubbed off on me a bit:

Destiny: noun: an event (or a course of events) that will inevitably happen in the future

noun: the ultimate agency that predetermines the course of events (often personified as a woman)

noun: your overall circumstances or condition in life (including everything that happens to you)

Since no one truly knows what their future holds then I guess one's belief in wither or not destiny exists is their choice...

destiny is the path you choose to take which creates the road to the rest of your life. It's all in your hands.

If you look at my determinism thread then I have soem ideas about the same thing; whether things are pre-determined or not, dont know if it helps, because Im asking a quesiton myself, but I think that there are levels of 'fate' that we dont normally address, and things aren't really as black and white as we like to think x x

I have developed my own beliefs on fate and destiny. I believe that we control what we do, but what happens to us from there is predetermined. We basicly are presented a set of doors, and once we choose one we can not go back and must follow the corridor until we reach another set of doors.

Also, the MultiVerse theory may be applicable to this. I am not sure of the specific's of the theory, (Someone tried to explain it to me and my head didn't stop hurting for another 2 days, heh) but referring back to my analogy, it says we choose all available doors. Any and all possibilities happen, and each one sculpts a different universe. Also, it relates time to a place, and thus we are not the same person we were 5 minutes ago.

i know about the baby thing...once someone dies a baby is born well...i dunno if its plain coincidence but when both my grandparents died, my siblings were born "mistakes" but they were born on the same day both my grandparents died....isnt that kind of freaky????

and should i state...they both are carbon copies of my grandparents....

yeah i agree with all of yous you do make your own destiny...its all a matter of what you decide to do, it's a matter of doing the right thing or the wrong thing.

Destiny, i decide, fuck the world and commit suicide and die. I decide, not to commit suicide and get killed. I die of old age. I die of diease. either way i'm destined to die... Just becuase i never chose to end my life this way, i still never had a choice in the matter, because this was my destiny. (think about it, before you say, wiat a min, if you commit suicide then i'm taking destiny int omy own hands. No, thats what was destined for me.. get it!)

I'd like to believe that things happen for some reason or another. Like when someone who was outright mean to someone for no reason, then gets an injury or illness as if it is a payback. I have never had to seek revenge on those that have done me wrong without reason, because after they wronged me something bad and sometimes something worse happened back to them. I did not wish bad things upon them, because I am not that kind of person, but it has happened to at least 5 people in my past that royally screwed me over and I just sat back and waited to see it happen. So, I believe in fate and destiny. For I believe to have seen it happen in my life.
Also, I got laid off from a major corp. a year ago (budget cuts) and shortly thereafter I got not one, but two very good jobs in which I had to choose from and now I am happier making more money and working in a happier more stable company.

destiny is a sheltered idea. It helps individuals cope when they believe that there is a greater purpose for them. Walk the path, make the turns..it's all in your control.

I dont think there is suck thing as destiny...For every choice there is a consequence..And i think that everyone goes by this until they die..So pretty much you make your own destiny.

I truely have to go with the"choice that we and ourselves are destiny.....We make our destiny and I know it for sure..Sometimes I find myself thinking of a life, about people and imagining some life situations and nearly everytime it then comes true.It doesnt really matter if that situation will come in an hour or a month.
And what about those situations which you cant really influence? Its because they are choices of someone other and you are simply in it...

Well my belief is that things happen for a reason and we may not realize it at times but in my life, ive had my ups and downs and things are naturally there when you need it. Destiny is also what you make of it but your life might not go as you plan. Life is change, and the best expectation is to not expect anything at all.

I was going to post this subject cause it interests me very much.Am confused too.But it's like some things really happen for no reason.Also I used to do tarot cards to myself, and things really happened so donno....

Destiny, (and fate, predestinatio, foreordination ...) are all concepts created to help people deal with life. Trulym in my mind's eye, destiny is something you make given your abilities and resources. You are the captain or your ship. (I sometime hate the fact that I do not believe in destiny - I would love to think that there was an outside force helping me along.)

     Destiny is such a bad concept, don't you agree? Believing that there is always that reason which prevents you from attaining what you crave... just like obtaining happiness. Because "It wasn't your time yet..." "It wasn't intended for you...." "The right time will soon come..." and other phylosophies...

     You make your life with the choices you make... You are the only one that can control your destiny and no obstacle prevents you from obtaining what you desire... not even God. (No offense with Calvinism) If there is a wall that divides you and your goal, you should only do one thing. And that is...

you fall off a cliff and you know you are going to die at the end. what do you do in the time inbetween?

the awnser is whatever you want.....

birth is the push off the cliff, your life is the fall, and your death is well the death....

the only destined occurences are the birth and the death as far as I see.... or at least I hope that is the case......

I find that most humans are control freaks and incapable of facing the possibility that they might not be in control of their own life.

Of course there are also those that don't wish to take credit for the control of their life, and they put all of their faith in destiny.

some belive that they are in controll of their own destiny that they have the say in exactly what happenes to them. others feel that the fates weave your destiny before you are born and you play it as they say it. i belive that you have some say in your destiny. i mean you cant have total say because if you walk outside your door and are hit by a bus and killed that is hardly your fault because it was destined to happen. now people can make there own life and live it as they choose but certan events in your life are planned.

i once heard that line:
when u hear what u hear and listen what u listn, u r right thinking what u think...
that seems obvious, but put it this way:
whatever one does is dictated by 3 things: situation, state of mind and past experiments...
past experiments can't b change, so no free will there...
situation depends on few ago past, nothing that can be changed...
my line shows that state of mind also depends on the past that can't be changed...

hehe, i agree with the Multi-Verse thing, have believed in the idea for some time.

i described this in a lot of detail in the Determinism thread so i will give just a quick overview on my opinon.

you can choose to do whatever you like, but there are certain events that WILL occur no matter what you or anyone else does. it is prophecy, with forks.

you could for example, choose to go into a mall to buy some clothes, but a gunman comes to rob the place. you fend him/her off untill police take control.
or you go to the mall to buy some clothes and you don't do anything about the gunman that comes. some people die, but order is restored eventualy.
now this would be a sub-set of a prophecy, but the point is that either way order comes back, no matter what happens it will be restored.
just like the falling of a cliff thing.
personaly i think God set the prophecies in place and we are just finding them out.

in short : we control our lives, but somethings will happen no matter what and if you choose another path, a new set of prophices are intialized.

its a matter of opinion really, influenced by the way that people have been raised....believe what you may, after all its your life....no one can tell you what to do.

I believe that you make your own destiny and no one is in control of it except you.

I formed an interesting theory on this yesterday morning during one of the wonderful 3 hour long thelological/philosophical conversations with my roommate at 5am.

Could it be possible that we create our destiny's subconsciously as we sleep? I think this could occur during REM sleep, through our dreams. Our subconscious could be planning out our future to varying degrees. This could also provide some explanation as to why REM sleep is the only cycle of sleep that will cause death if singly eliminated. Without our brains being able to plot out our future during REM sleep, we eventually hit the end of the timeline that we have planned out, and it causes insanity and death. Also the more sleep deprived one becomes, the faster you go into REM sleep after falling asleep. There is little doubt that REM sleep is very important to our well-being, but there is much debate as to why it is so important, as is there is much debate as to what purpose dreams serve us. This theory could also explain why people sometimes forsee future events in their dreams.

but if we make our own destiny all the way then how are you sposed to controll the bus killing you? is it your choice at that point for the bus to hit you? sure it was your choice to walk there but not for you to be smunched. we cant controll all of our destiny

Control is nothing, control is the real illusion. You have control over your decisions, your actions, your beliefs and your feelings. Whether or not destiny exists you cannot control other things around you. That's why I believe in partial Destiny. You control yourself, but every day you face the world you have to try to meld and mend things to keep living the way you choose.

I think the concept of Destiny is the same as Beauty. There isn't much of a point in trying to determine what exactly it is and what it does and how it affects us.
We might as well choose to live or not live and get on with it.

There's no destiny as such only desire although certain pieces of your life are meant to be and cannot be avoided but you can stumble upon these things earlier than was intended such as a lover you know happened too early in your life etc.

It depends on how you view the term and/or idea. Your destiny, in my opinion, is the end, and life is just a means to that end.

Actually, it is that simple Dhampir... Although what you are speaking of is more in line with self-actualization reality than destiny.

However when it comes to destiny, what I find most disturbing, is that everyone's definition of destiny (and its existence) is the definition that brings them the most comfort.

Some things are easier to accept, when you say that this is how it ment to be, or that somewhere is written how it has to be, or something...

i think that if your gonna die on a certain day and you try to prevent it if its your time the lightening will find you. you know what i mean . i believe that there are freak accidents but i aloso believe that we have a set time on this planet and what we do with that time is up to us. cause you never know. we caould all die tonight or 20 years down the road.
