there are so many philoshophic (sp) therorys whitch is your faveourite, the one you belive is most reliabel? are we just figments of our imagination, created by one god, destined to do what we do, do we have free will, are we a paralel universe, are we dreams, are we goning to be reneincarneted (sp), will we go to some when when we die, are we dead, are we in hell and do we produce karma?? so many posibilitlys
think away
aah, you couldn't fit this in with the Karma thread or the reality one?
It's always been and still is a race to find reasons and meaning and Proof. Forget it all and live. What is the sense in knowing the scientific facts and ironclad proof. You are alive, you do see things, you experiance things so appreciate them and continue to do so.
I think Alan Watts was close when he described humans as highly developed tubes looking back at the universe. The Book On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are.
Descarte is interesting... but there are quite a few good philosophers out there, some with some really crazy ideas *gets her philosophy text book out to look for fun things*
"reason has always existed but not in reasonable form"
i made an addition to the famous:
"i think therefore i am"
it ended up being
"I think therefore I am, but how do i know everyone else is thinking as i am?"
and on top of that... it can be argued that computers "think"
discuss ;)
Im learning Philosophy and its funny because nearly everyone tells the same thing but gives things different names....
And If their opinions are different, then I found in everyones theory a big part of truth so...Its hard to tell who is right.
OOOH! Another Philsophy student!
Yeah, I get that as well, things change adn nobody seems to knwo who all these ideas are presented by...
I truly enjoy Sophocles (A greek tragic playwright). Quotes from some of his works are as follows:
"There is a point at which even justice does injury."
"Think not that thy word and thine alone must be right." (from Antigone)
"Reason is God's crowning gift to man."
If the goverment doesn't trust the people, why doesn't it dissolve them and elect a new people?
-Bert Brecht- playwrite
I really like what King`Tarquin said... good quote...
oh yeah! The wall is great! Lot of sentences to think about:)
Daermon. I love Brecht!
Do you know that he was buried in an iron coffin so that the world could not get to him?
I now have yet another song stuck in my head tonight! *walks off singing "we don't need no education..."*
Dhampir- love that song
*starts singing loudly and out of tune*
'HEY teacher leave those kids alone'
*gets in to a singing frenzie and colapses on the floor*
Dhampir- love that song
*starts singing loudly and out of tune*
'HEY teacher leave those kids alone'
*gets in to a singing frenzie and colapses on the floor*
oops
*grins*
Cogito, ergo sum - I think, therefore I am. (René Descartes)

for more information on this phrase
enjoy!
♥
wow this one is deep. I think that I will have to get back to this one later.
Descartes is an interesting one. if i remember right he also stated that things do exsist if it is necessary that exsist. (now i wanna go and check out the book i got that from blast it).
"a blind man asks a person with sight, 'tell me, what color is the sky?' the person replies, ' it is blue' the blind man then askes ' how do you know it?' the person answers ' i can see that it is. the blind man then asks a man who cannot see colors, the man replies ' it is blue' , the blind man asks ' how do you know it?' the man responds ' because a person who can see color told me'.
which of these men understands the sky?"

i do not know if this is much of anything, i came up with this eariler today. this doesn't have much to do with my Descartes comment, i thought this might be fun though.
I know this is kind of off topic...I was just wondering if any one else has ever tried to do this when they having nothing else to do... Do you ever try to completely empty your head of all thought? Just not think anything? I used to try to do that all the time when I was younger...This thread reminded me of it.
very good thread this is where all the great minds of the rave come out.
Morrigon
actually I still try that even know, it is very difficult because even realising that it is hard while doing it screws it up.
the ones that take it at least paritally seriously do (monks especialy), it is also a common theme in martial arts (classical), and other kinds of training.
The only way I've been able to get to a fully meditative state, clear of all thought, is after smoking bud. I haven't been able to develop enough mental control to get to that point without a little help.
i think therefore i am...
where is the rest???? you are what???
unfortunately there are people who DON'T think and they still are.....
tsk tsk tsk...
I've learned that I still have a lot to learn........
Faerie
i think there for i am, means i egsist the only thing you can every be shure of its that you egsist, for all you know you could be a brain in a jar and i could be a figment of your imagineation
as a lazy mathematician philosopher i do agree with descartes...
i know it has nothing to do with the thread but as an example of his lazyness, i recall that he discovered cartesians coordinate while having a nap, in summer...
he thought he could just know the position of an annoying buzzing fly just by knowing how far she was from 2walls and the floor....
true story...
maybe many of his ideas came of that quality...
I think therefore I exist... What if I become a vegetable, would I not be. Now that we established that we exist. What is our purpose, besides fornicating drinking and getting high?
I am that which my mind defines me as
you mind may define me as something else
but i am always as my mind defines me
mew
Thsi isnt much to do with the thread, but for those who are interested in this sort of topic, I would recommend a book;
'Thus Spoke Zarathustra'- by Friederich Nietzsche.
Its basically about a prophet who becomes Godless, and hence the creation of the 'Superman' rather than the divine.
lol nice one
mine is: reason has always existed but not in reasonable form
1. What is mind? No matter. What is matter? Never mind.
George Berkeley
1685-1753, Irish-born British Bishop, Philosopher
2. A man with one watch knows what time it is; a man with two watches is never quite sure. ~Lee Segall
3. When I die, I will not see myself die, for the first time. ~Antonio Porchia, Voces, 1943, translated from Spanish by W.S. Merwin
well computers do think except in the most besic ways yes and no which is wierd anyhow yeah... good questions but I don't want to waste my lifes pondering all those. As for the computer one you might want to read books on computer hardwares the answers lies there lol. and no i am not a nerd i resent that statement
When I was little, I used to have dreams that a mother hippo was reading a book to her baby and that book was our lives. So maybe we are just a story and when the book is closed the world will explode and we shall be no more
i don't think any one religion is real, it's just made up to either control other people, making people live life like the religious people want them too, and it's all about fear of death, religion gives people hope and peace of mind for the future, which is death, and makes them feel the ones they love who have died are not gone and will be seen again..if you truley do commit to one religion, believeing it's 100percent true it's also like saying all those millions of other people who believe in something else are wrong and are wasting there lives on a lie, ...after all is said and done i can't devote my life to something because someone says it's true, all we "know" is what were told, and what we feel
post religions are real to the extent of thier teaching etc. to have faith is something wonderful. I well donot believe in organized religion and if you say jesus was human i wont fight you. but i would still say for all the things hes done and for what he thought he was a great ass man and i would follow anyhow. yes i follow his teaching i wish people would love one antoher as he preached
existance is a wheel.... what has been will be again... untill the wheel spins no more and becomes ? We sgall live again because the wheel will come back around to us over and over
? Has anyone posting and/or reading this Forum thread seen the film 'What The Bleep Do We Know' ?...Talk about your philosophies, religions, science & Spirituality being merged. Syntheticdarkness, This Film is in absolute harmony with this thread -your subject/caption "i think therefore i am....".
oh & like many other members i'd like to post some sayings i have enjoyed:
"One who Thinks, Wills to Know" and an All Time Fav for some, that title of GOD (supposedly) told to Moses
"I AM THAT I AM"
Try vibrating that at your crown chakra
" I AM " in Brilliant White Light!
Hasnt science proven I think therefore I am?
Else the poor brain dead cases would dissapear at brain death....
I grew up around that whole Catholic thing. That Jesus is our God. No offence to my family, but I never absored that notion.
Ya, there's probably someone or something out there but to me it's not a Jesus. Sorry mom.
We're just here to survive and learn how to get along with one another, even through war, we'll find peace again. The only reason we're here is because the Aliens put us here.
There could be all kinds of rules, systems, enteties, energies, principles etc. behind this "vail" that we cannot see past...
If the "vail" is there at all that is;o)
