What Sci-fi books stand out to you, regarding time travel?
How do you imagine time travel would work?
What cases have you heard of people claiming, and researching time travel?
H. G. Wells' classic The Time Machine comes to mind, though he never really went into detail about how the machine worked. In reality, as far as time travel is concerned, there is a good book I came across called How to Build a Time Machine. It was purely theoretical, but it discussed a number of quantum mechanical concepts. I've forgotten a few of the steps involved in producing a time "machine", but it had to do with quantum foam, wormholes, and the properties of time at near-light speeds. Something about expanding a quantum wormhole, sending one end through a particle accelerator for any length of time, and theoretically, that end would be at a different point in time than the other end. It was odd, but it made sense.
O like how Wells accounted for economic concerns of time travelers, in the sleeper awakes (more suspended animation then time travel) the foundation
Keep the sleeper, and his "tomb" preserved.
I've heard that something called string theory physics talks about Time Travel and how it may or may not be possible. Way too much info for me to absorb though.
I'd imagine that if time travel were possible the universe would probably implode if mankind were able to do it. With our egos we'd be running back and forth trying to change things until we blew the cosmic circuit.
Gravity bends time. I think he means actually traveling to the past or future.
Also, assuming physics is correct, and time ceases altogether at light speed, then should we somehow succeed in traveling faster than light, we could travel through time. Though the chances of doing so are about as likely as learning to travel at negative speeds.
Gravity can only bend time but so much, however -- you'd have to have access to a black hole if you were to rely on that level of gravitational power...
Since the idea of alternate universes comes to mind, I would be inclined to believe that being able to line up these infinite universes, we are able to "hop" from one moment in time to another. I prefer Ray Bradbury's stories regarding time travel.
In theory regarding the unknown, I guess almost anything (logical) is possible. What would you define as a "rift", dabbler?
A rift, has the effect of a tear, in space-time.. both "realities" exist on their side of a veil.. not interacting, I wish I could think of the Title to the small series about Rifts. It is a cool idea, it has Orcs, fighting With furure weapons, sort of like War Hammer..
lol. Interesting fantasy twist to it.
I remember reading about tears in space-time, and the possibility that they occur naturally throughout the universe. I should look into the latest discoveries on the topic.
Rifts or portals? It would be the ultimate experience being able to travel to other realities. Just imagine all you can see and learn there.
I was talking about it in the context of quantum physics. It was mentioned in The Elegant Universe, though I don't remember much about them. They weren't necessarily "portals" to another dimension, but if I remember correctly, they were more akin to theoretical wormholes that possibly led to other locales in this dimension.
I like the quantum leap idea, he knows there is no going back, so with the exception of AL he is as good as dead in this ( his departing) reality.
Imagine saying to someone.."Meet you for dinner, how about..last month?"
Okay, so I did a bit of reading in the book again, and it was determined that under certain circumstances, it is possible for the fabric of spacetime to tear as a result of what is called a "flop transition". They have only been confirmed to occur in the Calabi-Yau shapes of string theory, and the mathematics of it gets confusing. Basically, the tears don't actually cause any noticeable difference in spacetime because of M2-branes and other complicated shit that I'm not going to copy/paste in here.
Bottom line, should an observable tear in spacetime occur without being shielded, it is speculated that rather than opening a door to another dimension, the result would be catastrophic.
There's a lot more to it, but without fully understanding it myself, I couldn't possibly explain it in my own words and expect to be accurate.
Also, given the information I just posted, ignore half of what I thought I remembered, because it was wrong. lol.
Part of the reason I like Ren fairs and wild west shows is for the nostalgia, a form of time travel however basic.
I am wondering where it is stated regarding gravities association with time itself. I know of the string theories and the quantum relationship with the space time continuum, but I am a bit confused on gravities relationship regarding the bending of time.
Though there are rifts throughout the world, a few documented cases where individuals are shown a sort of doorway that when they pass through, they end up in a differant part of the world. But past vs present vs future rift phenomenon is very rare in any case, and I have yet to see any documented cases pertaining to these guidelines inparticular.
As mentioned, H.G. Wells comes to mind, as well as the video game believe it or not: Assassins Creed. A very well thought of analogy of time travel within the self.
Yet if time travel say was possible and what we heard about changing things in the past would the rift transform the present to meet up with the change in pass. Example Jfk assasination would not have happened than the rift would than transform the present as we know with all of his term in office. Example of hollywoods theories on this.
Personally I think we should all call Doctor Who ask for a ride in his blue phone booth and get some answers.
I suppose for me I really don't believe that time travel is practically possible or at least not with out ending things as we know them.
A series of Sci-fi books "The Alternate Kennedys'" presents a compeling read about doing just what a few post up, says. So people say, anything is possible with imagination. Please present your imagined concept.
have to look into that dabbler. sounds like a fasinating read.
yet time as we know exist only here yet we are saying time travel would infact give us an alternite universe of different time and spot. H.G wells was the first embark of such reasoning to guide others in the scientific realms of possiblities.
Creating a fictional time machine.. is likely to use scientific terms in libral ways, the awesomeness of fiction. Bring it close enough that years from now some psuedo scientist will claim to have decyphered it and made such a machine.
I have not heard this yet it was all bases of fiction until Einstein started the thory, yet scientific machines would have to create enough energy to part the rifts in time.

link some palin insight on time travel and time machines
How many sci-fi writers had backstage passes at rocket labs?
Once the LHC starts stacking data, the Sci-fi writers will seal themselves in their dens, I look forward to what that produces.
Spider Robinson, in his "Time Travelers, Strictly Cash" is an interesting take on time Travel, mixed librally with bar humor.
are we looking at this from the insight of fiction and the stories or from a point of scientific reasoning and is it possible?
once somebody walked past me and i heard him saying to himslef2im realy here,im really in the 1970s.2ive often wondered about that.did i walk past a time traveller as a child?
Both.
Imagined by the reader of the thread, and an invite to post articles that have been presented as non-fiction.. I am looking for one such article as we speak.
I hope we are not talking of Russias claim to have a time tunnel but more of a factial book and theory.
I have her book but here is a link dabbler

One would have to consider any potential affect of their presence in the past.
It would take an isolated destination, and knowledgeble people in the past to benifit from future "certainty".
There was a TV program back in the 70-80's about time travel. In this the machine malfuctioned and the two just kept jumping through time and space and never got home. I think this show scared a lot of ppl away from the idea.
I do believe given time someone will create a machine that will enable the human race to travel through time. We can now travel faster then sound and have invented some strange and wonderful things...give it time.
According to Jenny Randles books that these magnetic storms are all over the planet at different times and if we where to say catch a ride that time travel would in fact be possible a fasinating read on some of the logical claims here.
Rant By Chuck Puluknik has a variation on time travel, or sort of.. in a Chuck Polnuik Way..
i often wounded if time travel was possible.
My thoughts are that eventually such a machine would be abused, stolen, replicated by some terrorist or used to give power to religions or worse…. None of this has happened so I don’t believe it will ever happen or we would know by some small group of people like the illuminati ruling us and enslaving us by debt…. Hang on lol
Time Bandits.. I so liked that movie. They were using time travel for gain.
Woman on the Edge of Time by Marge Piercy
Marge Piercy, Woman on the Edge of Time (Fawcett, 1977)
Marge Piercy's Woman on the Edge of Time is either a utopian fantasy or a horrific recognition of the limitations of human evolution, depending upon the reader's perspective. It's a dark and violent novel in which the protagonist has no real hope of salvation, yet the fate of the world may rest within her unsettled psyche. We meet Consuelo Ramos in the midst of a family crisis that ends with her admission to a mental institution. Impoverished and abused, misdiagnosed and tortured, she has every reason to go crazy. Yet she seems perfectly sane until the day when she begins to see visions of people living in the year 2137, who claim to have contacted her because she is "receptive" to them. The citizens of Mattapoisett want Connie to visit their era because if things aren't changed in her present, the future may cease to exist.
Connie is a very unlikely heroine. She appears to be a sociopath to her doctors, who cite as evidence of her instability the fact that she has had a broken marriage, a love affair with a blind pickpocket and a conviction for child abuse. They know nothing of the desperate family and financial crises that have shaped her life, nor can they understand the prejudice to which she has been subjected as a Mexican-American woman. The social workers consider it lucky that Connie has lost custody of her daughter Angelina for the child's sake. They refuse to understand that if Connie is insane, their own cultural failures have made her that way.
Still, when she is first brought to the peaceful future of 2137, Connie reacts with confusion and horror. Mattapoisett seems rural and backward to her. Nearly everyone is required to participate in farming and cleaning; the chores of transportation, public welfare, defense and other necessities are also shared among all members of the community. Citizens receive the option of pursuing higher education, yet careers are distributed on a rotating basis and nearly everyone is involved in public service. Art is produced communally. People may choose to identify with any ethnic or religious group regardless of their genetic backgrounds, but everyone is expected to pray and celebrate together, regardless of affiliation.

scanning that I look forward to reading it..
A friend reminded me, in time bandits the Supreme Being knew the Crew would steal it, he let it happen, the Boy perhaps was not planned.
watch the movie "A sound of thunder" it will show you why Time travel is stupid and irresponsible.
experiments are being done to accomplish Time Travel and from what i have heard they are very close. weather they actually do it or not is beyond me.
I believe that time travel is very dangerous and should never be attempted.
Now that was a good movie on the effects of manipulating the past and the future would in fact change due to the effects from the past. a scary thought about time rifts.
If you travel west you are in effect traveling backwards in time, do so fast enough and it is possible to get to your destination before you left your starting point. When you travel east you are in effect traveling at an accelerated rate through time. Time is a relative concept meaning it is relative to your point of view. Another example of this is that when you look at the night sky you are in effect looking into the past because the light we see came from the stars millions of years ago in many cases because of the time it takes for the light to travel from the stars to the earth. The closest start besides the sun is approximately 50 light years away. That means it takes 50 years for the light from that star to reach the earth. If that star were destroyed tomorrow we wouldn't know about it for 50 years. Just for the sake of argument lets say there is a civilized & advanced society on a planet orbiting that star. Now lets say they have a telescope capable of observing the earth with the detail that our satellites observe the earth. They would be seeing the earth as it appeared approximately 50yrs ago. In theory time for those particles of light traveling at light speed stands still. Is this in fact the case or is it merely the perception of time stands still?
I just found an interesting article that shows possible evidence that it may be possible for something to in fact travel at a staggering speed of 10,000 times the speed of light since evidence appears to show that sub-atomic particles may be able to "communicate" at that speed. I'm including the link.
http://www.thetechherald.com/article.php/200833/1746/Do-sub-atomic-particles-communicate-at-10-000-times-the-speed-of-light
Food for thought …. The super collider, it has partials traveling at the speed of light nearly ….. I was thinking if they find partials that with stand the smash or are not altered, wouldn’t that make the base compound for a time machine and make it a safe capsule to travel that fast?
Yeh goes along the same lines as carbon 60 or C60.
In the lab they kept messing with carbon to find the truest form… after vaporizing it they had nothing… one of the techs noticed a red mist on the jars used.
Turned out to be C60 a super conductor that speeds up the path from A to C almost ignoring B and is the base compound for nanoscale fabrication
Wow a small nano cam made to go faster than the speed of light to back or forward in time taking pictures.
Only problem … how would it send info back???
Maybe the rift it causes is it’s wormhole back
but how could one control or program to get info or obtain for if light depending on the degree of time we may never recieve info until our children are grown. hmmmm just like light from the stars. we would almost have to have some sort of frequency fastr than anything known, also the energy to obtain such a factor would be riduclious to say not enough energy even in plutoniam.
i do know that sound or info can be placed in light waves and carried, a design came out where the dance floor was light with such equipment so one could dance at a rave then walk out from the lights on the dance floor and have a normal conversation … except for the out of tune lyrics being sung by those on the dance floor.
I do believe the military took the concept to make long distance recoding devices where a light shinning down picks up your voice.
While I have many thoughts on time travel and rifts though I openly admit their derived from fiction only, may I suggest "What the Bleep, Down the Rabbit Hole" It's an excellent documentary with a host of scientists and mystics explaining the very nature of our universe. There may be a portion dedicated to time travel.
http://www.whatthebleep.com/synopsis/
Another curveball to structure of our universe would be Seth Speaks by Jane Roberts or any of the Seth Material.
The main point that I was trying to make is that point of view has a lot to do with how time is related to us. If we had came into existence on any other planet in the universe we would not see time in the same way. every aspect of how we perceive time would be different. a 24 hr day, 365 1/4 day yr is only found on earth. the Mayans measured their year differently and more accurately than we do. since gravitational fields can effect time and atomic particle even an atomic clock would be effected. so part of the problem with achieving time travel is that we may be looking at it from the wrong perspective since we only have our perspective on earth. Another major barrier that I see is a logistical barrier. In H.G. Wells "The Time Machine" the theory is that the machine travels in time but not in space. The Machine always occupies the space where the inventors lab is/was until the moorlocks move it. The problem with that theory is that point in space is constantly moving. Everything in the universe as far as we can see is constantly moving. Since the universe is currently expanding the earth never occupies the exact point in space more than once. To time travel while on the earth you would have to account for the rotation of the earth, the movement of the earth in its orbit around the sun, the movement of the tectonic plates on the earths crust and the movement of the earth in its relationship to the galactic and universal centers. if your calculations were off on any 1 of these by even a small fraction you would likely end up materializing inside a solid object or possibly even empty space missing the earth entirely neither option being very good. Now were you to try it between two planets even just 50 light yrs apart your calculations become even more complex because you would have a nearly infinite number of objects that you would have to account for. More than likely for time travel to work between two planets you would have to travel outside of the space time continuum so that intervening objects could not interfere with your spatial progress.
As for using atoms that can withstand atom smashing to protect something inside it there is a little problem called inertia which says that an object that is in motion tends to stay in motion. So let say you manage to squeeze an egg inside of 1 of these "indestructible" atoms. Now you get the atom up to light speed and it strikes an immovable object. The atom stops, but the egg inside keeps moving instant omelet.
Inertia is another problem with traveling at light speed because of another property of it as well that being that an object at rest tends to stay at rest. It would take an incredibly long time to accelerate to light speed at a safe rate for the human body and then you would have to slow to a stop at the same rate. To give it some perspective at an acceleration rate of 1G it would take approximately 355.208 DAYS to reach light speed. It would then take the same amount of time to slow to a stop. changing speed at a rate of more than 1G for the duration it would take would likely not be good for the human body. While the body can withstand higher G forces up to 6G for short periods say a few seconds. Even at 6G it would still take 60 DAYS to reach light speed but the body couldn't handle that much force that long.
quantm physics would say its possible, the quatnam leap series of tv was deloped on this theory fo time travel yet they put a spin on it that you would inhabit someone elses body tho.
Interesting but isn't time travel and rifts just a bunch of psycho-babble as well...is time travel really time travel or is it jumping to an alternate reality? If it's truly time travel than are we all just an echo playing our parts that we've played over and over again.
there's a couple other problems that have to be overcome as well. As you approach light speed your mass increases which could be very bad for your health as well. Partly because of this and because it takes more energy to go faster than you were going before, when those two factors combine the energy needed to continue to accelerate as you get closer to light speed goes up logarithmically. All of the laws of physics of the normal space time continuum work against matter traveling at the speed of light. That is why many scifi writers use theories of sub-space, warpspace and or hyperspace where the normal laws don't apply. My personal favorite for traveling instantly anywhere in the universe is the infinite improbability drive used by Douglas Adams. The ship the Heart of Gold has the ability due to this drive to be in every point in the universe simultaneously you just have to figure out exactly how improbable it is that you will actually end up where you want to go and generate the appropriate improbability field. "Saves all that mucking about in hyperspace."
yea, but what are the chances that the probability exist, that the improbability drive would blow a fuse? Not very Probable, But I would fingure routine maintence would help. Basic Random checks.. ?
while it's not likely that we will see warpdrive, hyperspatialdrive or improbabilitydrive in any of our lifetimes the concepts are interesting and improbabilitydrive is by fare my favorite they may all someday become a reality. when you think about it mechanical flight is still a new concept much less space travel. space travel has came a long way in a very short period. in 40yrs we went from not being able to go into orbit to having deepspace probes with iondrive. the ideas of space travel and iondrive both came from science fiction. when I was in college one of my projects was to build a functional laser as part of a burglar alarm system. i built it as small as possible, it required an 8,000 volt power supply the whole thing when I was done was in a tubular case6in in diameter by about 2.5 ft long. Now you can go to wal-mart and buy 1 already assembled in a small tube 1/4in x 2in that runs off 3 1.5 volt batteries. Military applications are starting to come close to the laser cannons in scifi shows. a few years ago a computer that could only do basic math functions took up an entire building. now you can get a high end personal computer barely bigger than it's dvd drive that does more in 1 second than the room sized computer could do in a year. The next generation of super computers will most likely be more powerful than the human brain which only a few years ago people said would never be possible. If they can prove what the article I posted the link to said that subatomic particles can "communicate" 10,000 times the speed of light then faster than light travel may be possible. If they can create sensors, computers and communication devices that can operate at those speeds that will be 3/5 of the battle. The other 2 obstacles then would be creating a field of some type that would have different laws of physics to allow faster then light travel and creation an energy source that would be a virtually limitless source of power. One of the most likely candidates for that type of power source is a fusion reactor which they are currently working on. A fusion reactor would be like powering a ship with a star it's the same type of reaction. They are also working on developing the theory of a cold fusion reactor which would not have all the heat associated with a star. Either way if done properly it is believed there would be no radioactive waste like that associated with the current fission reactors. One of the biggest problems with both types of nuclear reactors is containing the reactions. To some degree they have containment of the fission reactors but it creates a lot of radioactive waste in the process not just in the form of spent fuel rods but in the cooling water, cooling rods and building materials. eventually science will again catch up with science fiction. it's been said that on average science is 80yrs behind science fiction. there are a lot of things from star trek that have become real in 40 years and star wars in 30years so it is possible we may eventually have faster than light travel which would allow for time travel as well
H. G Wells 'The Time Machine' I'd say is really good and still one of the best ever written...
russia has many attempts at this time machine and seem to be on the right track

I believe that time is much more fluid than we give it credit for. The rational linear model does not hold when discussing time travel though. I believe that there is much yet to be learned. An interesting thought to share is zero point energy. The premise is that everything oscillates at a certain frequency. The ability to tap that frequency epsecially of a say ancient object would be very interesting I think
I'm not sure what you mean by the 'rational linear model'. Do you mean the model where time flows forward from the past to the future? It's been shown even by relativity that time is much more mysterious than we had ever expected. Michio Kaku does a lot of interesting studies on the properties of time.
Books on time travel....H.G. Wells "Time Machine" which I saw previously noted. There was one I read as a kid, written by Andre Norton. I think it was called "Galactic Derelict". It was about some people finding a flying saucer derelict, that was able to return to it's original time period, and archaelogists who then decided to investigate the prehistoric period from which this flying saucer had originally crashed, as well as the alien culture that had existed at that time.
Someone else mentioned Robert Heinlein's "Stranger In A Strange Land"..I have to disagree with that one. There was space travel involved, but no time travel that I can recall.
Whitley Strieber had an interesting first hand account in one of his books..."Breakthrough: The Next Step", in which he recounted something of a time shift. He was looking at a campfire on his land one moment, the next, it was ashes, his cabin had disappeared and he got something of a vision of what he later believed could have been the true origins of the Eden myth after the expulsion. Interestingly the people he witnessed there, were able to see him as well.
Some good movies on the subject..I was always partial to the "Terminator" movies, "Demolition Man", "Butterfly Effect", and "12 Monkeys".
As for whether it's scientifically possible, I cant really speculate on any of it, not being familiar enough with the subject of physics. I too own a copy of "The Elegant Universe" but it was, sadly, over my head.
Just for the sake of speculation though, if it were actually possible, I would hope they'd take a page from Norton's book, and send scientific observers only. While it might be tempting to mess with the past, I tend to wonder what kind of impact on the present it would have. Then again, considering some of the strange tales that abound with certain types of paranormal phenomena, who is to say someone isnt doing some observing by way of time travel?
I heard of a clan of vampires called
True Brujah
had mastery of time control
unlike regular brujah.
from the world of darkness
vampire the masquarda gasme seting
they stand out to me
as a powerful force not to trifle with!
I red a book once. It's called, "Dreamweaver." I don't remember who the author was, but basically, it's a bout a group of people on a different planet who can weave the dreams of the people around them. I haven't really dabbled much into books concerning time travel. Though, A Wrinkle in Time and those books are very good.
Ok while I don't actually think time travel is possible I have read some books that of course were fiction based. Quantum leap was a good set. In all acutuality if it were possible does it really matter the mode in which it is done?
Ide pick the method that had a built in indicator that it happened. Or it would be done, you're in the past, and the present writes you off as vaporized.. I would only go as far back as a controled lab ( fixed secured destination) could be assured.

Has anyone seen the christophor reeve movie where he restores the hotel room to travel back, I like the Nostalgia Approach.. Would his present body.. If the trip was sucessful ( damn penny) have been a vegtable?
Them there is K-Pax..was that time travel.
