Below is the trailor for the film "2012." I am not going to post the predictions because we all know what they are. But what I would like to know is what do you think of them making a film based on the predictions? What do you think of the predictions? And what have you heard/read? Anything about 2012 is welcome here. And please no one line post. Thanks!

For those of you unfamiliar with the lurid predictions of 2012, do a google search on it. A million sites will come up to inform you. And also, if you would like to see more clips, just scroll through the menu on the player above, there are dozens of different trailers for the film. This was just my favorite :)

It is just another theory...nothing more.If the world ends in 2012...so be it...nothing can be done to stop it.Until that day comes...I have no belief in fictional predictions. The movie is just another way to make money off of peoples fears.

I agree with you. Hollywood cashes in on everything. I honestly don't buy the whole 2012 thing. But a lot of people do. It seems like this film quite possibly could cause a mass panic. yeah?

Think about the Y2K thing...some people stocked up on batteries and wind up appliances.Thinking the world would crash and nothing run by computers would stop working.Im sure as the year 2012 gets closer more people will fear what they don't know...but if enough people start to believe, they could unknowingly cause something bad to happen.

dark wolfman hit it right on the head. If he world is suppose to end as maya's predicted it we could do nothing to stopp such a force as mother earth ending her life. Hollywood has to keep the audience on their seats with new things that are hitting the public eyes or start remakes again*covers eyes*.

2012 is a hot topic just like the 1999 predictions so we will wait and see.

This is the first time of even heard of the movie. Thanks for the preview. I am going on a day to day basis. Even if the predictions are true that the end of the earth is coming, what will we do? What can you do? All that can be done is to live from day to day as best as you can and hope for the better.

Looks like it's going to make for an awesome movie, if not something more serious. Personally, I don't believe in it, but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen. If the world is going to end in 2012... then the world is going to end in 2012, and there is nothing we can do about it. I don't think the Goddess would kill off this world she created. What's the point?

I agree that it sounds a lot Y2K, and that the movie may cause a mass panic.
Which would benefit large corporations if it reaches large scale, people would start to horde things they would believe they would need if they survived the devastation coming.
( Unfortunately, one of my friend’s fathers has fallen trap to this panic already, and is beginning to take what he calls precautions- I’ve tried talking to him, and telling him how illogical this is, because let’s face it if the end of the world is coming no amount of prep work is going to save you- not that I believe that the end of the world is coming.
I don’t believe that the end of the Mayan Calendar signals the end of the world.

Among my friends it is a popular belief that it will bring about a large scale change. I don’t necessarily believe this either, but it would be welcome. The future isn’t foretold with great accurately ever because it is constantly changing, and I’m not going to believe because a group of people ended their calendar on a certain day that the world is going to end. It’s illogical.

And I agree with Goddess of the Night here, why would the Goddess destroy the world she created? I have more faith in her than that. We are here to learn, not to be destroyed for mistakes. ( although I wouldn't mind destroying certain people for their's -- lolz)It would mess up the whole cycle of the evolution of the soul.

The fascinating aspect to me is the cycle of fear in which we are currently in the midst. It's hard to determine which came first --- the popular media feeding off religious predictions, none of which ever point to good stuff always to apocalyptic punishing shite --- or the very real economic and environmental circumstances facing our planet.

Fear Factor. Such a good title. Gets the adrenalin going, and for many people like a deer frozen in headlights, they throw up their hands and give over to . . . terminus.

The point is . . . deal with it. Don't go see this bullshit movie if you're already worried. Fight your fear. Deal.

I will see it, mainly because I love apocolyptic plots in film and literature. But as for it happening, I honestly can not say. Only time will tell.

the reason people are freaking out is not just because of the Mayan calender. There are around 10 predictions that point to either 12/21/12 or 2012 in general. So it isn't just one thing supposedly going to happen. People are wigging because they don't think we can dodge every last one of them.

I don't know if it will happen, but if it does then hey; at least everyone is going down with me!!!!

People who stocked up for y2k did'nt realize food and bottled water does have a expiration date. I have heard many theories on this subject. the poles are changing it's axis with the earth. There will be spiritual awakening. the end. If the end happens I would not have to worry about my family paying the funeral home. If we could put up with 8 years of Bush I am sure 2012 will be a breeze.

wow this movie seems sooo exciting! thats what there? sea level high as himalaya? daaaaamn! just imagine if this really happens? whooaaaa maaaan, really, why is that happening, why should that happen? whats the use to that? so many people will die, and all for nothing. ok, it is not that they are so super intelligent or somin, but still, people. is it for some dicks dream of easier global domination and control with smaller numbers? or just natural? i dont know really, if such big thing is to happen it sure aint just a whim of nature, but there is a more complex cause behind it. wheres the fucking god here maaan? I aint gonna die just for someones shit. some say thats a beginning of a new golden age or something like that. golden my dick. what ever happens or not, im am sure im going to enjoy this movie cuz i like exciting things. just check it out, thousands feet high sea waves. whooaaaa. and who gives a dumb shit about all these periods ages earth is going through, like it matters, it really brings nothing else to us as humans which can live a fulfilled life only once their two capacities have been evolved to perfection. all these other things and stories really mean dick. the movie excites me if nothing else on this useless rock with even more useless vegetable growth on it. it is all recycled feces anyway. wonder how the air smells clean. or maybe it doesnt. maybe it smells like shit but we cant see that. and besides all that i think nothing will happen. it just sounds too big to be true considering how nothing is never happening. anyway you can save your self only if you can fly. and you cant fly. and besides that id have to think.

The Maya did not say the world would come to an end. It was more like the end of an Epoch...a change of consciousness so to speak. There are all sorts of predictions. I did a long article on this topic. One of the predictions was argued about and some guy said that it was suppose to be September 2008 actually. Well that came and passed. It appears to be more of a societal change rather than doomsday but the solar max and the projects NASA and other countries are involved in that are not hidden but most really don't know about are what I think needs to be worried about. Those things going on with the sun and other areas of space.

I wrote a long article I will be revising but the topic is so extensive concerning all the predictions for 2012, I had to divide it into four categories. I have not seen this movie but it doesn't surprise me that people are making them.

Psychic predictions
Edgar Cayce made a prediction that the magnetic pole would shift and there would be a major tilt of the Earth’s axis. JZ Knight has made predictions and again Nostradamus is in the picture among others.

Scientific predictions
Major sunspot activity causes a large solar flare is predicted by NASA. Space dust is predicted to hit the earth. The Solar max.

Religious predictions.
Those who follow Bible codes say the Earth will be struck by a large comet or asteroid. Correlations have been made to verses in Revelation.

Cultural predictions
The Mayan calendar comes to an end as well as other cultural predictions, such as the Hopi Indians are speculated upon.

I posted random things in my other ID in my House on the things I had that the US was doing...they were taken from various parts of the article. Thing is I didn't do research into what the Aztecs were saying. The Mayan Calendar and the Aztec Calendar are the same thing. The Aztecs are still around and some of them still live in tribal groups in Mexico. I went to College with an Aztec Indian. That would be worth looking into for a real explanation I am sure some of them will know concerning why the calendar ends. I still think from what I know it was the end of a stage in their society and had they stayed together as a cohesive group they would have gone on to something for the new era.

I think I'll enjoy the film; it will probably give me some food for thought for a little while. However, whether there is any validity to the doomsday predictions of 2012 I don't even care to guess. The way I see it if it's a fate thing then what am I supposed to do about it? Last time I checked I wasn't any kind of special person with the power to stop the end of the world.

So weather there is any accuracy to this prediction or not I'm going to just keep living my life in the best way I can and if the world ends on 2012 so be it.

when i was a kid I used to think about these things and think about how I'd manage to survive each and every possibility, because I knew I wanted to survive.

now I don't really care one way or the other. if I managed to survive a global disaster it would be pretty damn depressing, but then again I'd get to be part of starting over. if I didn't well then I didn't and I'd be in the afterlife with most of the rest of the planet.

Well I guess it would depend on what the Mayan's viewed as death in this prediction, In a tarot deck the death card does not mean death, it means change rebirth. But if it is correct there is not alot we can do about it. I am going to stay positive on this subject and hold to my belief that it means the world will only change:)

I feel no one can predict the exact time the earth will die/stand still/ or explodes is anyones guess...

My self I feel as long as we live our lives the way we want and it is filled with love and family then everyday is a lucky day to be here. just an opinion is all :)

Personal the y2k is not the same as 2012, never compare grapes and wormholes together
The date is from a race who even predicted there own demise and have calendars going back before there time as well, all very cleaver for some “savage who sacrificed n eat chocolate”.
If the race was not destroyed and the information hidden by those Spanish murders, we would know what it all meant… but we don’t and can only guess.
I think it has a lot to do with the sun poles changing and the solar flares will not be stopped by our depleted heliosphere.

they talk of the alignments and a sap from the tree of space showering us, only the true of heart will pass on to higher level of life and the rest will carry on in a mad max style life due to us leaving the cities.

The possible mad max life style in our near future might sound like a fun exciting independent alternative, but in reality it would be a real hell, because we as human beings do not possess any special, functional enough ability so we could live in it successfully, nor are we capable of developing one.

I would rather “be out there” where the advancement of the human race will happen and be drenched in the sap of the universe as we advance.

Iv spent to long in small rooms with little or no sunlight prisoner by a society unfit to govern itself reeking of corruption and greed.

No I will party in the universal sap as the poles change on the sun in 2012 and our heliosphere has decreased more than 50% it’s solar flares and the universes radiation destroys all DNA on this planet ……… the 7 items or less in a food store will mean nothing, and the ultimate game of he who lives the longest will be one lone person for sure.

Yes - Hollywood will cash in on anything...wiered that if any believe that the word's going to end on that date, they better have fun quickly, spending that money.

Anyway, besides the usual predictions of natural global catastrophies, I think that the date will usher in the end of our modern way of life, and a crash of the world-wide web.

while it may make a good film, i dont think im going to worry overly much at the predictions of a neo lithic culture....frankly i wouldnt worry too much if it were a modern culture. people are always seeking the END, and im sure they will continue to do so even after 2012.

I think if the end of the world was happening for sure I dont think any Government would even try to inform their people. Like what would be the point there would only be mass panic and for what.

I dont think I would want to know that tomorrow the earth would not be hear anymore, I rather not know and go on as normal.

mass hestieria would happen if info was leaked out to the public of the doom of the planet. kinda ironic 2012 and the day the earth stood still and heard another 2012 movie is suppose to be released. the individuals and some cults will use this to bring their members in closer to repent for the years left.

well we will see what happens. 1999 revisted once more.

Honestly I think it's stupid. It's quite unnecessary. I mean like everyone has their opinion and this is just mine... Some may agree and then some might disagree...

If the world is really going to end in 2012 okay... Good luck world.. End. No one can stop this so if it has to happen... It has to.

All we can really do to see if this is true is wait and see what happens.

Because well they said that the world would end on the 6-6-06 but did that happen? No... And all we had to do then was wait and see... So yea... That's all we really can do.

Hollywood always seems to cause most of the mass hysteria, with prophesies, Followed by religion forces and than the rest would be papers.

Why worry live your day like there was no tomorrow. if it happens it will probably happen fast, Super Nova.

The History channel will be running a special involving Nostradamus and 2012 very soon if anyone gets this channel. I don't believe we are all going to die in 2012. Like someone above stated everyone thought the world was going to end on 6-6-06. Remember when the world was supposed to end in 2000 too?

2012...About a year ago, I caught something on the Gloom and Doom channel (my pet name for the History channel) that actually attempted to unite the prophecies of Nostradamus, Revelations and the Mayan Calendar story.

I think that has to be my favorite to date, since it's the first time I ever saw anything try to overlap those three to "prove validity".

On the movie...it makes me a little uncomfortable because there has been so much prevalence lately on end times propaganda everywhere, and there are alot of people who really believe the world is going to end because of the Mayan Calendar. On the other hand though, its almost standard for Hollywood to make a movie or three on just about ANY subject having to do with the end times scenerio, why not do this one too?

As for what I think about the last day of the Mayan Calendar...I think a friend of mine made a very good point about it, during a not very recent conversation. She said that the reason the Mayan Calendar ended on the date it did, was because the culture was suffering severely due to plagues. Basically, the Priest class either died out or fled the cities, so all work stopped on the Calendar, it just happened to have stopped on that particular day. I *think* this theory was one she came across in one of her college classes, but offhand I dont remember for sure.

If anyone wishes further info, let me know and give me a few days, I could probably find out.

Funny you should bring up the History Channel Documentary. They ran into a LOT of bad press after that came out.

How NOT to make a 2012 documentary.

As Mollidew pointed out (and so far has been the only one here who has), when one actually takes the time to read about the Mayan Calendar and 2012 one quickly discovers that they did not believe the world would end on 12/21/12, but that a new Age would begin.

Excerpts from the FAMSI website I cited earlier:

According to ancient records, the Maya Long Count
Calendar will reach 13.0.0.0.0. Due to the cyclic nature of
Maya calendars, this date appears to replicate the same
number as at the beginning of this Creation in August 3114
BC/BCE (which the Maya also wrote as 13.0.0.0.0). The
interval is 5125 years & 133 days, or 5125.366 years.

The “13” in the Maya date 13.0.0.0.0 indicates “13 Bak’tuns.”
A Maya Bak’tun or Pik is 144,000 days, the same number as
the number of devotees taken up in the Rapture, according to
the Book of Revelation. Coincidence?

The Maya had very complex and interlocking calendar
systems, which were as precise as modern day calendars. In
the same way our Gregorian count ties to an important
event, ‐the birth of Christ‐ the Maya calendar also counts
forward from an important ‘Creation’ date, 11 August 3114
BCE.

No mention of destruction nor of renewal, nor improvement, connected to
the coming 13.0.0.0.0 Maya “end date”.

The text in its entirety is much more explanatory, but in short, the date 12/21/2012 marks a complete cycle of 'creation,' and not a cataclysm. They saw creations as the start of a new era, supposedly with an improvement on the previous era.

If you read my post by scrolling up a bit, you'll se an excerpt from a book that describes in intricate detail where the date comes from, and what it signified to the Mayans.

For the record, Nostradamus never mentioned 2012. Ever.

That does depend on the message of the film. If it's purely for entertainment purposes, that's fine, and might even make for a good movie. However, if it takes the tone of a "this is what could happen" movie, then I have serious issues with it.

I have been following the 2012 matter for different, but relavtent reasons ( dealing with the linger cult like collective of the same surviriorlist that flocked and rallied for Y2K, I even hatched a crime short story for it. All because I chatted with a real convinced, and compellingly articulate person on-line. What is the worst that could happen? Not the worst as in the obvious sense, but in the sense of overplayed sensationalism.

The worst that could happen? I'm reminded of a news article I read a few years back, where a man was convinced that aliens were coming, so he killed himself and his family to prevent them being captured. It's an extreme example, but some people, if convinced that a cataclysm is coming, will resort to drastic measures to avoid it. Even if it means taking the lives of others.

I'm not surprised they took flack for that one. I spent the entire time watching that piece of crap shaking my head and laughing.

It would have been hilarious if it hadnt been for the fact that it made me realize that the channel was directing more and more of it's programming to such propaganda pieces and really made me wonder why.

Every turn of the century, and particularly the milennium, at least as far back as history is recorded, there has been some hysteria along the lines of the "End of the World". 2000, Y2K, 2012, none of this is really new. In some instances, some catastrophes did seem to happen, but mostly it was the expectation of disaster that contributed to the disaster. Self fulfilling prophecies basically.

What is alarming is that we now live in an age where information can be transmitted instantly, and hysteria induced panics can cause harm to a much wider range of the population than ever before.

People, when they become convinced of something, often because they are reacting on an emotional level rather than a logical level, will only notice that which seems to validate the belief. Anything else is dismissed.

So why do the folks with the cash flow want to convince people the end is nigh anyway?

This applies so often to so many aspects of existence that it isn't even funny.

So why do the folks with the cash flow want to convince people the end is nigh anyway?

I'd guess because people are put into a panic, and they'll do things they ordinarily wouldn't, buy things they don't need, all in preparation for the coming cataclysm. Not to mention, when the end doesn't come, they rarely seem to have to answer for their 'mistake'. Look at Y2K. Did anyone have to apologize for telling everyone to stock up for the apocalypse?

La Murta, after the date passes the matter becomes novelty. Good point in mentioning the lack of Revised editions to Y2K Meltdown Books, though they will publish books on how the "events" that "did happen" where covered up.. and how at a later date "will effect us",

Decyphered: When any economic disaster settles, interprete it as originating back in Y2K.

Hind Sight, backed by discredited "research".

Just like all the "research" based on claimed psychics that have exposed themselves, or been exposed as nothing but performers.

No retractions there either.

Although the trailer doesnt tell you very much about the actual predictions, it sure does look good!
As for the 2012 prediction itself, i suppose it is just another prophecy and the likely hood the world just ends is...not very likely in my opinion.
To put it another way, The mayan's did there calender Thousands of years ago? so....maybe they just got tired of planning ahead, eh? Seriously, would YOU make a calender that far ahead? Hell no! I'm surprised they got to 2012!

La6Muerte66, yeah I know. It's a hard habit to break when you realize you do it, most people dont realize they do it though.

I hope that's all it is, the wanting to make money off the gullible, but my suspicion is that it goes a bit deeper than that. I'm not a big believer in prophecies, but one thing I do not underestimate, is the power of people who wish to deliberately self fulfill the prophecy.

It isnt about money though, it is about power. Destroy the world to prove one's own religious beliefs "true". If there are survivors, the level of control over them would be unprecedented short of "biblical times". All it would take is "Do as we say or God will do it again."

I do believe some are insane enough for such a thing.

This is just hollyoods version of the end of time on earth. all people have beliefs or theories on how this will happen. yet we do not know for sure when.

Good point Faceless I could have worded that better, still I am impressed with some of the latest findings about the Mayan culture, and their accomplishments.

So impressive because of the fact that people in present day, with knowledge of the pattern of advancement, still entertain the idea that they had to have had extra terrestrial assistance. Looking farthest to say 3300

The History Channel is no more reliable than a movie.

Their 2012 documentary was just as bad.

What's worse about the History Channel is that they spread misinformation, often making up or distorting facts and the presenting them under the guise of an educational program. They're just another TV station, and they're driven by ratings, not accuracy.

Long story short, you'd be better off reading a book. Look for something written by an accredited scientist, historian, anthropologist, etc. Their jobs are more dependent on their accuracy.

well as far as I know there is no way to be able to save all 6 Billion people so I would say we would beon our own as for survival skills. and there has been many predictions that have come about, yet I myself do not feel that the end will be her in 3 years. but eventually there will be a mounumental change or distruction to our planet as we know it now, it is called Evolution...

So if this was to happen in my lifetime I would just depend on my our taught survival tactics, I was raised and was in the military and well survival weekends was a thing our family did for fun . LOL crazy as it seems yet I feel every one should be prepared for anything.

You know the movie just might suck when they even have trailers using lines from other movies..
the whole "Avoiding judgment day.." line was from Terminator 3...common now!
Write a movie plot and story that can stand on its own.

Thank gawd the world ends in what 3-4 years..then I wont have to waste money on buying this stupid movie..

Great post everyone, I just love this topic.
Mollidew has the topic by the horns, it is not an end of life but a spiritual awakening in the sap of the universe. What that means is out to conjecture. A good one is how radiation from a black hole at the centre of our galaxy blasts’ us with radiation… this is how we developed into humans as we know, the divine spark….. my question to that is why not everything else? Why just us?
Still back to the evidence and im not bashing religion, might sound like it though lol
Ok as we know a race of astral observers made a calendar that has great merit, like self proclaimed events that happened like the end of there race.
Question one as we have seen with 2YK public can believe anything and go crazy, did the they believe it was the end and let the Spanish kill them rather than fight to save there race, gold, silver and history or did they believe the calendar and say end of times is now and lay down and be killed?
Now as I came to understand the religion stories has been going for some time and as zeitgeist clearly points out it’s nothing new and a nice way of telling astral observations.
Question Two.. religions that realized this storie set about to hide it or use it, Rome was burnt to the ground and it was linked to the end of times as mentioned in a religious book. Once again was this man believing in doom n gloom or the work of god?
One thing I do know …. Astrologically we will have an alignment, the age of Aquarius will be upon us and the age of the fish will end …… a new world order or spiritual understanding.
All I know is I have a car and live in the mouth of the rocky’s and a food supply, unlike the Y2K where as a PC geek I knew nothing happened with our PC’s… I did fear the government nukes being based on simple flawed software.
Question three, will political jackals use this obvious loaded topic to bring about a world government a new world order?
Question four … what is we are about to go into the path of a comet, the government have been burying seeds in ten mile deep bunkers … they know something and we can only speculate, latest I read was a whistle blower on the project doomsday vault, one near the north pole, one in Norway so far, the Norway one I believe said so much radiation from space with a failing heliosphere will leave all DNA broken on this planet, thus a seed bank has been made.
Makes you wonder doesn’t it … im sure the banks are a smart idea in a world of change and new power struggle as people develop nukes and test them(france) on tropical islands.

QueenSuccubus69,

well if you keep posting them for opinions then you must believe at some point there is a Possibilty of them surfacing to reality.

Who said I'm posting opinions? I posted articles that were written by Central American anthropologists who actually studied the Mayans and other cultures of the time. I don't even know what you're implying here. There never was a Mayan prophecy of the end times. The calendar was only based on a "creation" cycle. 144,000 days. It started at a few thousand years BC when NOTHING happened, and it ended at 2012. Their culture believed that life would go on as it was. It wasn't until modern times when uneducated people saw the written long-count calendar that these self-made prophets and scholars claimed that there were all kinds of predictions made by the Mayans. They never predicted the end of their own race, nor did they predict ANY important event in history. Funny how a race with supposed esoteric knowledge is DEAD at the hands of Spanish invaders.

...a mounumental change or distruction to our planet as we know it now, it is called Evolution...

Evolution: change in the inherited traits of a population of organisms from one generation to the next.

This has nothing to do with the development or destruction of our planet.

lavisbre,

I already answered question one, so on to:

Question Two.. religions that realized this storie set about to hide it or use it, Rome was burnt to the ground and it was linked to the end of times as mentioned in a religious book. Once again was this man believing in doom n gloom or the work of god?

No religion ever "realized this story" because there never was a story. The Mayans never predicted the end of their culture.

The Roman empire fell for a number of reasons, not the least of which being successive reigns of terrible leaders, inbred emperors, constant barbarian invasion, and according to one source, lead water pipes that caused mass brain damage. The Book of Revelations, obviously the book you quote, refers to the Roman Empire as the second Babylon and "predicted" their downfall as the end of the world. They thought their rapture would come in their lifetime. This never happened, of course, like every other "prophecy" ever properly recorded.

Question three, will political jackals use this obvious loaded topic to bring about a world government a new world order?

It wouldn't surprise me, as any smart (corrupt) leader will use mass hysteria to gain more control. I doubt it, however.

The "Doomsday Vault" is not a preparation for any end times. According to CNN,

"A vast underground vault storing millions of seeds from around the world is scheduled to open this week in a mountain on a remote island near the Arctic Ocean.

Dubbed the "Doomsday Vault," the seed bank is considered the ultimate safety net for the world's seed collections, protecting them from a wide range of threats including war, natural disasters, lack of funding or simply poor agricultural management."

The vault is a safety cushion in case any disaster should strike. Anywhere.

As for the comet theory that many people keep bringing up... well, to make a long story short, there isn't one.

http://www.astroengine.com/?p=2722
http://www.universetoday.com/2008/12/21/2012-no-comet/

The only sites that talk about a comet (or planet) striking the earth are conspiracy sites looking to cash in on your fear.

So please, don't make me keep having to say this over and over and over. THERE IS NO 2012 PROPHECY. YOU HAVE ALL BEEN DUPED. GET OVER IT.

I was referring to the zeitgeist understanding that religion is based on astral calendar and the stories are the same coz the “sun” dies on the star formation called “the cross” has 12 disciples or zodiacs and rises … the Mayans mathematics was so good there calendar was only a day out every 3257 years where Romans Julian was out ever 128 years…
The Mayans never disappeared.. they were just raped of all gold silver and knowledge.

So are you telling me there is no mention of the sap of the universe moving on those who are pure in 2012?

Zeitgeist distorts a good deal of information to further their own agenda as well. Yes, most religions are based on worship of the sun and/or nature, 3 kings (Orion's Belt), The cross, etc. But much of what is said is distorted, and very little is actually cited for accuracy. It's just blindly stated.

As for the Mayans and their supposed accuracy, this is taken from the article I posted a link to much earlier in this thread:

"More reasons why the "Maya Prophecies" should be read very carefully:

Errors. Maya monuments, particularly dates and distance numbers contain
errors, both of transcription and of calculation. I count something over 50
numerical mistakes carved in stone. Apparently the Maya, believed that “a
card laid is a card played” and never, ever, erased and fixed a mistake."

Also, where are you getting this "only a day out every 3257 years"? They had an entirely different calendar from the current Gregorian, and it didn't even record years like our own.

And in response to your statement about the Mayans never disappearing:

"Cultures worldwide suffer cycles of Rise
and Fall. But those in Mesoamerica
apparently lived in a more fragile
environment; when they fell, they fell
hard. Unlike Rome, Baghdad, and other
Old World cities who rebuilt after a
collapse, most of the great Mesoamerican
capitals were completely abandoned after
their respective Falls."

The Mayans didn't "disappear", and I never said they did. Most of them died, and the rest were absorbed into other cultures when their cities were destroyed.

I might add, the Spanish didn't even reach the Middle Americas until over 500 years after the end of the Mayan empire.

So what problems, and damage do doom sayers prompt? What harm is there is hyping Doom? It sets the fringe in motion to mass hysteria, in various degree, it psycologicaly, and sociologically creates a permisiveness to let things rot, decay, and creates neasightedness, people clear out retirement funds, in the suggestion that money will be seized from such accounts. (yea you would laugh) and say those people are suckers. The prediction I would believe is that by 2013 they will have a new Doom date Prophesy to market.

What motive would a person have to invest so much into promoting Doom?

I love your questions, dabbler.

I don't know much of anything about economics, but let me see if I remember correctly. If people start withdrawing all of their money, it can start a run on that bank. If the bank is destabilized enough, it will go bankrupt, call in its loans early, thereby causing businesses to whom it has loaned money to halt production, etc. It can even lead to a depression. Anyone that can benefit from such a result has a reason to propagate such hysteria.

On the other hand, some people - paranoid, delusional people - just like to think that the end is near, or that the government (or church, or what have you) is holding something from them. Such hysteria feeds their suspicions, and probably makes them feel better on some level, "knowing" that their suspicions were correct. They don't want to face the idea that they may actually be wrong.

There's also the market for books and other literature, outlining supposed "prophecies" or other nonsense that the gullible public will go after. A well-written book, regardless of its accuracy, will make huge profits. Look at Sylvia Browne and other "psychic" authors. By making people think that they have some sort of hidden knowledge or power (despite being proven frauds), they sell millions of books and make incredible sums of money.

It seems few seek accountability from failed "Esoteric Prophets", and if some one inquiries, a lose interpretation of a pending trend is sighted as "directly related to the prophecy. Like past betting at the horse track, by showing your stub, and saying, "I meant number four for show.."

You're absolutely right. No one ever goes back to actually check the accuracy of major predictions. Every year-end prediction Sylvia Browne (for example) has made turned out to be wrong, unless the outcome was obvious. She's lied compulsively about helping the police find bodies, she's even staged calls and successful readings to preserve her character. She even weaseled out of the James Randi million dollar challenge to avoid being exposed.

As for the people claiming that there are prophecies already in existence, most people won't bother looking into it. They'd rather just take someone's word for it as long as it sounds plausible. How many people are there that still believe there's a planet called Nibiru in an impossible orbit through our solar system that's going to crash into earth? Has anyone actually looked into the physics behind such an orbit and why it isn't plausible? There are so many conspiracy websites nowadays that they almost completely hide the legitimate scientific sites debunking them!

Psuedo- ology is what failed academics do best, like Sylvia has a "ministry" and a Company.

The use of minor degrees to present oneself as a credible researcher is rampant in the Fringe Zone.

They even turn on others among their ranks, accusing each other of Disinformation.

So when people blitz their credit accounts (if it all ends Why Worry?).

People want the worst case senerio, yet they cannot, or choose not tp process the concept that they are being taken for a ride, once again.

if anything like this were to happen I don't think it will wipe out all of humanity. I don't really believe all of the end of the world stuff. If you all remember in 2000 electronic stuff was supposed to stop working and the internet was supposed to not be here anymore and whatever else they said.

i believe it is somewhat true...you know there have been failed predictions in the past...ie. having flying cars in 2000 or Y2K and such.
But this one was predicted centuries ago, and not by just one person or culture.
I think that holds some truth in it.
Everything else Nostradamus has predicted has come true.
So I do believe that something has the possibility of happening in 2012.
