I was driving today to get a few things and along the side of the road I saw a beautiful fox. He was very happy nosing around a bush. His coat was starting to turn colors from red to white. He was beautiful and as I passed him a wave of joy and a tingly feelling came over me.
Now I do believe that animals can be omens Im just curious how many others there are out there who believe the same thing, and what do the animals mean?
A rare sight touched you.
Can you relate to the fox?
The fox was doing the same thing as you.
Something telling you that you are on instinct now.
You can shake the hounds now, hopefully in quick dashes.
As far as omens go, there is a belief in the Southwest and parts of Mexico that states that one is living on borrowed time if one sees a white owl flying over...I'm still trying to get more info on this. Kinda' cool and creepy though...
I wouldn't call it an Omen, but a spiritual awakening. Some cultures believe the spirit animal communicates in differant ways. Perhaps the fox or canine is your spirit animal and was communicating to you in a compassionate way, if you were either feeling down, angery...Or was inviting you to its mood, letting you know it was "all" okay.
I don't see the animal's presence as any kind of sign to you. I think that to do so only lowers the animal's existence to that of a signal flare. The fox was there for his own reasons; living his own life. As dabbler said, just doing what you were doing -- carrying on the business of conducting your life.
So the fox, in the course of pursuing his needs and wants, happened across your path while you were pursuing your needs and wants. It's the crossing of two lives which are intertwined only at somewhat distant levels. He wasn't there for you and you weren't there for him.
But to catch a glimpse of such a being; a wild animal which survives on cunning, skill, athleticism and instinct, is something through which to be humbled (in my opinion). For even without the intellect common to humans, he can do what we cannot. He can keep himself warm without clothing. He can keep himself fed without hand-outs. He can breed and raise a family without welfare, health insurance, artificial shelter, climate control, grocery stores or a credit card.
What might you think if someone were to see your existence as something controlled by some unknown power, simply to provide a message to the fox? A fox is far more than a signal flag just as are you. He's a majestic symbol of conquering life among the environment. Something man can no longer achieve.
:-)
All things must meet at one time or another, in one form or another. Thus is the balance of the universe. Some individuals are realist, whilst other are spiritualist.
This does not mean the act of the fox's appearance was pure coincidence. Mayhaps the universe wanted the two to intertwine in a certain way to prove a point. What that point is, is distinquished by the individual themselves.
On the few occasions I've seen a rare wild creature, I look on it as a blessing and a reminder that we are supposed to be sharing this world with all creatures.
Living in the mountains, wild animal sightings are a daily occurance. I woke up this morning to a deer in my yard and last night my son and I giggled over a little bunny scurry around. I see some kind of wild animal every day.
If animals can indeed be an omen, I wonder how you would know when they are an omen and when they are just there doing their thing.
Me I also have wild animals encounters, all because I'm all the way up North in the state of Maine, close to the border of Canada, which is very cool.
So I have seen bears, moose, wolfs, coyotes, cats, dogs, skunks, raccoons, etc. I did not have any kind of feeling except for aww how cute they are.
I put more in the fact that in your perhaps hussled day you noticed natures subtle presence. On the side of a road. Consider the fox seeking a way to out fox the freeway, to get to favorite forage area.
The fox no doubt felt out of place, and if it was during the day, or early morning was up past bed time (foxes are nocturel correct?)
I like to watch animals, instinct is an impressive thing to me, somehow relative.
Well I do agree on this subject, but in your case I do not think that it was an Omen so much as your inner animal. You see if you were in a bad mood or stressed that day and it was effecting you badly he (as you put it) was trying to help you get through the day.
Well actually i've heard many rumors about animals and omens......for example:
1) When all the cows are laying down it is time to go fishing.
2) When all the cows are standing up it is going to rain.
3) When horses run from tornadoes then they are running in a safe direction.
But that is some stuff from living in the south. ^_^
Well I am from Montana and when a cow is standing up we tipp them over ......lol :)
animals as omens i am sure their are some that would believe it. like a black cat crossing your path something bad is going to happen.
The only problem with scientific explanations is that a couple are close minded when it comes to the spiritual side of things.
When I say that all things meet as according to the universe, it is a simple statement that says; when things are ment to meet, in due time they will...Not nessessarily "all" things, as in all in total...But all things that are ment to meet, that have a specific plan to meet...Must and will meet by universal law.
Nothing more, nothing less.
I take animal omens kind of seriously ... I hate it when birds go totally silent and when a black cat just stops and stares at me with those malevolent eyes...
*shudders*
Cows rarely ever lie down here in Maine. I have always had a black cat cross my path and had nothing bad happen to me, but it also be that I lived with black cats all my life too.
cadrewolf that was funny yet true. my family maintains a home in southern montana and I feel the beartooth moutains are awash in a very strong energy. I am from central california on the coast and dabbler makes a good point when the animals wild and dmoestic go to ground watch out and head for a safe spot for a earthquake is coming. I think that the omen and animal idea is a good one. It depends on how you want take it though. I would agree with some earlier posts about it bieng a humbling expierence. It is I will also say that bieng in tune is easier for the the animals than it is for us sometimes and the ability to re tune as it were is not only needed but vital
I wouldnt say omen myself. Maybe more an indication or invitation to study the various associations of the fox, especially if you're wiccan or some other form of pagan.
Oddly, fox is to me what wolf is to alot of other people. Some of its associations are survival and adaptation, camoflauge (spelled correctly) invisibility, and shape-shifting.
Someone else mentioned it's primarily nocturnal...it is, but its also frequently seen at both dawn and dusk as well.
I always get a thrill from seeing them myself as they are amazing animals. They've adapted to living in cities, and the hence that particular association. Shape-shifting probably comes from the asian cultures, where they are believed to have the ability to shape-shift into young human females or old and venerable human men. Invisibility and camoflauge probably comes from their ability to blend in to the natural environment, as you noted, some foxes change coats with the seasons. But they also move around during the time it's hardest for us to see them.
At any rate, does it necessarily have to mean something? No not really. But I like to study the animals I come across just to see what sort of things I can learn from their habits and ways. You never know, and animals make great teachers.
For me its several animals
Hawk
Eagle
Tiger
Wolf
All of these animals are majestic to me and I am in awe of them. Every time I watch a Hawk playing in the wind i can't help but smile and feel as though it will be ok today.
an omen is only an omen if it has meaning to you.
for me, when i see a red tailed hawk, i want to salute the gods. for me the hawk or falcon is a symbol of the goddess freya. sure, they are wandering around doing their own thing, but who is to say that the gods dont work thru them? i think they work thru people to for that matter.
i think the original question was what different animals mean to you. if the answer is that you dont consider animals to be omens or signs of any kind, then why do you need to write a full page to say that?
oh well

I have to go along with the statements made about it being a spiritual awakening between you and your spirit animal.
It is known that the animal spirits will contact us through meditation dreams and through on occasion through visual in nature.
For me I feel becoming aware of certain animals at specific times are signs of power.Moths fluttering around at odd times are thought to be signs of power in the books of Carlos Castaneda.. I believe it shows a connection and alignment to spirit.
i guess the caution i would put out is that each native culture...whether amer-indian, european, african, or asian shaman...has its own meanings for different animal omens.
if you are of a spiritual eclectic nature, you may be mixing one belief system where say an owl is a sign of wisdom gained, with a system where an owl is a sign of impending death.
not the best mix.
~Wolf~
a bird hits the kitchen window of our house my mother freaks as she says this is a sign of death an hour later she gets a phone call her father died.
seeing a black crow before a wedding means that there will be much trouble for the couple and the wedding will not last...aslo wearing pearls that come from clams or oysters cant remember which means you will cry a tear for each pearl as it takes tears of the mulusk to make the jewel
Well animals have always played a role in different cultures from the native american to the celtics. Asravens and crows are often seen as a omen of death in many superstitions.
The fox is my spirit guide, and hs been for some time. hey are so free spiriyed and whimscial. With the abilty to go between the two worlds unnoticed, as they often travel at twlight and dawn. They are often seen as a symbol of decpetion as well and to be cautious. So takle a look at your surroundings.
i have always considered ravens to be a sign of good fortune, a sign of odin. whenever i have seen a pair of them, usually good fortune follows (at least for me)
many people think omens dictate our fates. you saw a fox and all of a sudden you feel a warmth come over you.
Some people think if you saw an animal such as a owl in the middle of the day means your going to have a death in the family.

this site will help with the meaning of the animals, I have more then once seen Snakes, Wolves, raven, owls and Nagas(Snake like people) in my dreams.
Animals are a lot of things, they can be omens, esp cats and crows. Othertimes you can just feel their primitive mood and it awakens your own primal urges. never be cruel to an animal though. it has severe karmic repercussions
I believe each creature of this earth has a messge to tell us. How each person intepets it is his own. seeing an animal in the wild is a beatuiful sight and one to cherish.
A fox changing its coat. A note to you to shed what is letting you down and start anew. Time for a change even if its a little at a time. So smile someone is looking out for you.
I agree with gealachlass, it's a sign that you're shedding an old development cycle and transforming into something new and if the fox is any indicator, more elegant.
