It seems that the Young Adult Vampire books have taken on a frenzy of attention from the television and movie networks. First the Twilight sensation took over the young adult world in literature and then hit the big screen. Now the CW network has taken on a new project.

"Not surprisingly, the box-office success of Twilight has led the CW to stake out some territory in the teens-and-vampires genre by picking up a pilot for Vampire Diaries (written by: L.J. Smith), a Kevin Williamson-penned adaptation of a 15-year-old series of novels.

Similar to (and yet predating) Stephanie Meyer's Twilight, Vampire Diaries revolves around a young heroine who is the object of obsession of two brothers — both vampires, one good and one ... well, he's more complicated. The bloodsucking siblings fight for her soul, as well as dibs on other residents within their small town.

Williamson (Dawson's Creek, Scream) is penning the pilot with Julie Plec (Kyle XY), and will exec-produce.

Casting of the three leads is now complete on the CW pilot Vampire Diaries, and not a moment too soon. I was just about out of puns.

Paul Wesley, who played an angel on ABC Family's Fallen, this time has a bit of the devil inside him, having been cast as Stefan, one of two vampire brothers fighting over the central heroine, Elena.

Wesley's character, says the Hollywood Reporter, is a "gloriously, amazingly, especially beautiful young man." He is also 200 years old, though his MySpace page claims he's only 17.

Starring as Vampire Diaries' Elena is Nina Dobrev, while Lost alum Ian Somerhalder earlier this week was cast as Stefan's brother, Damon." (This information was taken from the tvguide.com website.)

My question is this:

What do you think about the rising success of the Vampire, as it is being portrayed in the young adult world? Why has the Vampire become more prominent in the Movie Industry?

Do you think that it will give the younger generation a false adaptation of the Vampire?

new generation new twist on old tales. When I was a kid the only vampy movies we had was bella and then we had the classic wolf man, mummy,The latter verisons of the classic vampire didn't hit till the late 80's early 90's when the goth sub culture made vampires a hit.Todays day n age romance seems to be dead guys no longer open doors for the ladys nor offer their seats.Some dissrespect the ladys with such horried language that is so discriptive to the female body parts.
So bringing these young adult vampire movies where the vampire is showing respect and love to his ladys is great perhaps threw them. We can get back our Knights in shining armor.

There's another thread here on vampire mythology changing which addresses your concern. In short, there is no "false or true" understanding of the vampire since the Vampire is a reflection of human culture and our deepest desires and fears. We change: the vampire changes.

That said, two hot vampire bros after the same female sounds so much more interesting than the Twilight crap. Much more room for characterization and exploring the light and dark sides of the vampire psyche.

*Chuckles* "Twilight" has already given the younger generation a false representation of the vampire. Before I begin, yes...I actually downloaded a copy of the movie and sat through the entire thing.

First off, it was not that well created. The vampires in the movie did not have the almighty "fangs" that vampires are soooo famous for. They seemed more like possessed individuals than anything, mayhapsdemons from another dimension. The only thing that made them vampire, was the fact that the protagonist basically "told" Mr. Cullen that he was in fact a vampire. But throughout the entire movie, they did not mention the word again or so as I remember anyhow.

Part of the storyline did change though, if you noticed that Mr. Cullen told the protagonist that he did not sleep, later in the movie, he was found "asleep" next to her. I do not think the movie itself was all that good, as an execution of what a vampire is on a fictional basis. It changed incredibly in the eyes of the younger audience. So much in fact, that vampires can now "freely" walk in the daylight, not need sleep, always travel in packs, do not have fangs, look as pale as all hell, etc.

Other shows are coming out in the near future...Such as Exile Asylum, which seems to be a mockery of the vampire community; A new MTV series dedicated to the vampire community; A couple of new documentaries on the vampire community, one of which may be filmed entirely in New Orleans.

But, is the world actually ready for these future shows? This in my view would be the next question. As society still has mediocre vampire type crimes happening thoughout the nation. Gang members thinking they are vampires since they play the almighty VTM...Is a good example of those type of crimes.

We are usually shown in a bad light since society wants us to appear as wicked individuals just out for blood. It may dispell the whole vampire folktale if we were actually shown in a positive light. What would be there to read and or write about? To watch? To catch societies attention?

Just my views.

i think marketing studies show that todays "cartman generation" (I DO WHAT I LIKE!!!) are very into the notion of being so different, mysterious, dark, emo, alternative, etc....

vampires are a great marking scheme for the masses - the kids LOVE the books, movies, associated subcultre/music/etc

and the profit margins go up and up and up!!! go corporations!!! make more and more and more $$$$$!

I think that the vampires being portrayed in the 'Twilight' series, gives a different approach to the vampire mythology. This being said, it makes the vampire character more likable in a human sense. I liked the books as well as the movie. I am not a tween or a teen, just to clarify. I am an older generation person, having grown up with Nosferatu and Anne Rice.

But, I think that the younger generation is getting the wrong idea about vampires being something not to fear. I agree, it was a tad strange to have the vampire character being able to go out into the sunlight and not go up in flames. This perception of the creature of the night, has seem to deteriorate with the younger generation.

I think the Movie Industry has caught on to the fame of the Vampire, due to the popularity of several books series. For instance, Charlaine Harris' 'Sookie Stackhouse' series has prompted HBO to make a series called 'True Blood'. Which is not a bad series, although it was short. I have to admit, I tried to read the books after I watched the series, and almost fell asleep while reading them. I have not read the 'Vampire Diaries' by L.J. Smith, yet. But I have bought the release of books one and two, it has been compiled into one large book.

It is a phase just like many subjects. Remember when they made alot of movies about magic?
Its possible that the influx of books & media of vampire's is somehow representing the current feelings of the population across the world.
Vampire's represent a form of perfection for many.

I like them better when scary-mysterious like the old ones, this is kind of gay vampires.. sparkle like glitter in the sunligh? Dont have fangs?Climb trees lika squirrel, and never sleep? Whats next...vampires that can eat icecream and shower with holy water? This generation is killing everything...and by popular demand the directors are selling out the traditional image, all the new movies sucks, there are no scary movies like the good ol days nyore, now everyhting is lika copy of The Ring and like 3 billions scarymovies type-like comedy shit.

What is humourous is that people who think they are vampires, and offer no supporting definition, or amended definition to the majority accepted definition of vampires . How they are so concerned with a movie redifining, or "misrepresenting" what a vampire is. So is that stupid funny or what?

I have to laugh I am sorry I mean for years people did not believe that there were/are cannabilism out there yet.. we have learned that there is alot of them out there, just depends on the location and lifestlye they live. So vampires are there as well just depends on country location lifestyles etc.. I feel that many just choose not to think such things are real until it comes to close to home or for comfort... Diaries are just that and if we use them to make moves and such so be it..

it is possible to give the younger generation a false idea of the Vampire by only showing the romantic side of the Vampire ... the part loves so deeply and cares so passionately but what they are leaving out is the animalistic nature the hunt the anger the danger .... which i think is what draws most poeple to Vampires as a whole before the start to research and some find their true selves

The closest vampire that i have seen on here is the corporate
guy who says he is not at all worried about people around him starving to death or living like swine that is a true wicked vampire.

I think that people get attracted to the vampire fiction because it gives the vampire image an invulnerable, omnipotent one and that is liked, especially by the younger ones, not to mention the fact that nowadays the image of the vampire is the one of a young and sexy one, rather than a monstrous one, like Bella Lugosi.

Therefore they like to imagine themselves as being that vampire or the lover of that vampire and lead an immortal perfect life.

Yes and no. No: because people especially the young ones, have all the rights to fantasize, and nowadays creativity is dying so nothing wrong and a bit of imagination is needed in our life, considering all the problems we have to face. Then however it becomes a problem if it does not cross the line between reality and fantasy and the person becomes crazy.

Yes: because there are really people who like blood yet they are still people like us. Thus many young ones think they are infallible because of their blood drinking.

My Opinion: Vampires have always been a fasincation since vampires have stories known to man throughout the world with it's many various definitions of what one is. Of course when one beefcakes up something with a legend, people are drawn to it like flies to crap. I believe if someone were to create several movies with other types of ancient legends, they would be just as drawn. People like the mysterious, the unknown, something taken from this world and retold. No different than say Alexander the Great with his talent and skills of conquering, thought to be a God at one point thus 'beefcaked'. It just makes them more interesting.

A false adaptation of the Vampire? There are many here on this site that argue their sides of what one truly or really is. Does it really matter how one writes their own version when there are those here that cannot agree?

Yes, but the idea of the fangs comes from fiction as well. It was introduced by Bram Stoker in Dracula because his book involved mixing werewolf folklore with vampire folklore. This book has been the yardstick most measure what a vampire is like unfortunately, and this is just one man's idea. He brought the elegant vampire to life (based on Henry Irving) and the romance and danger mixed together of the vampire who longs for a mate throughout eternity.

Because most of what is thought about vampires comes from these fictional places and the one book was so popular over time and many adaptations have been made of it for the big screen and tv, it is hard for people to transition to the views of other writers. I see nothing wrong with the vampires of Twilight. This was the author's story and many like it. I just thought the movie did not develop the characters enough. I'm planning on reading the book, I have it but she wrote it with her key audience being teens and young adults.

One cannot measure a fictional story as to what should or should not be in it or viable. It is merely the telling of a fairy tale of sorts, nothing more and you either like that story or you don't. I will be interested in seeing the new series. For some reason the vampire has caught the attention of viewers and movie goers not to mention those buying all sorts of novels now. It is all about making money.

it paints a false version of the vampire. period. but at the same time, it's damn fun to read. so given that it's entertainment only, I suppose one could say the reputation of a true vampire is preserved.

yes i think it will give the younger generation a false interpretation of what a vampire is but I think that can also be said about our generation now....a lot of people think vampires are the characters portrayed in television shows (ex> buffy and angel) and books.

I think these books and movies are taking two things that teens today (at least many girls) are interested in and comparing them to the vampire. These things are romance and the mysterious bad boy. These aspects i think is what makes so many girls want to read these books and then they fantasize about them. Hollywood is taking vampires and making them into the next teen heartthrobs.

I do wish that Twilight and the other vampire movies and books would show a more realistic side to what a vampire truly is, that will probably not be happening anytime soon. I am glad that Hollywood has gotten over the obsession of having ugly vampires that burn to a crisp in the sun... sometimes. I like twilight and I have read a bit of the vampire diaries series. They are good and quite amusing. But it would be interesting if one vampire movie could show the realistic side of vampirism.

I don't believe there can be a false representation of the vampire. What they are going for IS fiction, so that is completely up to the writer.

None of these people are trying to give a representation of a human vampire- 'vampire', which has been hailed a misnomer even by the biggest names in the vampire community. They are giving a representation of their creation, alone.

To put limits on a writer and tell them how they can and cannot create is wrong in my belief... I say, write it up! Get wild, do your thing, make it interesting, make it whatever you want it to be. Cutting them down for what they do is like 'fictional writer censorship'... not much different than the fundamentalists wanting to ban Harry Potter books due to their content in my opinion. I know no one is saying ban the books- but it's obvious some people in the vampire community think they aren't good and don't want them around. I say- take them for what they are... a beautiful unreality and made for people to use their imaginations and dream a little. Taking that away would be far more than a cryin' shame. These writers were around creating long before humans took the name 'vampire' as a title due to the parallel to the myth.

As I said before, if a league of bionic humans started a group and called themselves Frankensteins due to the parallel- they can't rightly start a grassroots movement against Mary Shelley and her book due to her misrepresentation, can they?

Be confident in who you are- while many are trying really hard for that mythical aura anyway... don't knock it, and embrace the genre that gave you something to be parelleled to at all. Better than being called a parasite. And I am not trying to be offensive... just trying to give the perspective and true reality which is this: These writers don't consider, care, and some might not even know about human vamps... they have a job and a passion to create a work of fantastical art- that means jumping out of this world and grabbing on to the glitter. It's not about you, it's about art, it's about the creation.

If you don’t like it- then don’t read it. Seriously the more that people complain about these types of stories- the more they will be written if for nothing more than the “buzz” they create. The best way to show that you don’t like something is to simply not give it any of your attention.

When you like what is written, that is the time to talk about it because you’ll be potentially introducing it to people that have not yet heard about it. Until there is no imagination left in people you will always find books/movies that bring a different flair to the myth of vampires.

*** I'm a hopeful writer and an avid reader. I write hoping to someday write something worth publishing. I read to expand my imagination. As someone who loves vampire fiction but didn't discover it until I was older, I have two opinions on this. One, I love that there are YA writers providing our youth with such a diverse array of fiction to further expand their minds. Two, I'm super jealous these books weren't available when I was a teen and have no problem admitting I will check them out of the library to read. While they might not be up to the standards of vampire fiction writers who aim their material at an older audience, I expect that. The YA audience is, as a general rule, not as formed as the adult audience so their characters might seem shallow or not complete to us as adults. If we are going to read YA fiction, we have to remember we're not the target audience! ***

To me sounds more like an excuse to sell out, true the money now is in the teens/tweens, yet all that you speak about originality and the idea of fresh ideas is absent in this terms. Its all about the almighty buck, and if kids like vampires that go to the beach to get a tan and drink holy water, huggable and romantic romeo vampires then that is what we should give them. I understand is buisness but is quite stupid to cover up interest with alleged "originality" of a writter. I think is cool to give the romance twist but i disagree with killing to much of the historic concepton of one. We start with vampires: scary monsters> fierced and troubled creatures > romantic > then, what next? Human that drinks blood and fall in love... Romeo and Juliet modern twisted fused adaptation between forbidden love and thrilling horror..I don't see the originality nor creativity. Films and new inspired writters wan't to sell books and tickets, its obvious they are going to aim for wht the teen generation looks for, and hide behind "originality" BS.

Trying to make a point here... I have no problem with human vampires, I just can never wrap my head around people that decide to also call themselves vampire then try to tear down the empire that they took the name from. Not all human vampires do that. Many are so secure with themselves they accept it all, they know who they are, so fiction is no threat to them. They even enjoy and embrace it for what it is... like everyone else in the world who appreciates art.

What I do read a lot (is the redundant mantras) "We are not like Movie vampires". " Why doesn't Hollywood write about the way I think of vampires." Heres an idea.. pick-up a pen,.. I know then you will be subject to critique and review.

I was talking at other posts above and as a directory to movies such as "Twilight" and new teen orientated "vampire" program like "degrassy" explained in the subject description on top; for the audience of teens. The shift in the new adaptation of an alleged 'vampire' in this upcoming movies and shows have drift from many special characteristics that throughout folkloric history have been side by side with the fear/fasination of what the creature portrays, to those who applaud 'Twilight' for being the "ultimate love/vampire movie of all times", simply boils my nuts, 'cause it just show how ignorant a generation can be, yet writters take advantage of this, instead of having a dignity in having a decent storyline atleast not deviated from the historic conception and at the same time innovate it wouldn't be a problem, but since "Twilight" is selling w.e accesory they make out of the name, "the shit of the vampire" people would buy it, so now many writters direct their "originality" in the new vampire, "Let make a high school with vampires", and crap like that..

You are the one that make no sense, my post is "clear as water", if you don't understand it, reread or ask someone to explain it to you, and it certaintly doesnt correlate to your: "studying for diploma example". It is just an image, once again I don't dress, think, or act like him, I simply admire the art but I dont live inside the art, I don't spend my money in the art, or buy 10 tickets to recite the script in the art. Yet since its the new thing in the block, now we are going to see the continuation of such concept of vampires in the industry since it is what is 'selling' and those writters that are desperate to float will just enjoy selling inspiration for survival, not for the sake of artistry, Their is numerous example of this, all those movies that presede Bram Stocker's Dracula for example: "blood of dracula","son of dracula",'Blacula, "mark of dracula", House of dracula", "Dracula 2000", "Count Dracula", "Dracula: dead and loving it", etc..X20. At those times Dracula in the portrait/cover was a secure sell, and half of them aren't half entretaining as the original.. Same with the 'Amityville Horror' and many other books/films of controversial interest.

So this brings us proxy to those who profess( without Articulating the reasoning behind their conclusion) to be a vampire. Over and over they state what they don't want to be thought of as, sneering at those who are content with the genere. As if simply portraying a role, is somehow below them.

I hear so many who profess/ identify as vampires ( when they have the forum " arms open" for reasoning) denounce everything, and present no summery of ideaology. May I suggest a Manifesto!, and maybe someday.. You can be criticized for being so misinformed, once someone gets a bigger fan club.

First of all I loved Vampire Diares and this is first I heard of them doing a tv show thanks for the heads up.
Vampires are now dangerous, gorgeous, and live forever. What girl no matter the age fall for this bad guy. Don't we all want a bad boy? With a vampire you never have to fear loosing him. It's the ultimate love story that most want deep down. I'm only soorry the t.vv and movie buisness didn't catch on sooner.

Hey - if a writer wants to create a vampire who climbs trees like a squirrel, skips through the daises, and have pot roast for dinner, more power to him/her.
It's called FICTION. Now, whether you like it or not is up to you - you can love it or hate it. You certainly won't be forced to read it.

Personally, I don't care for a lot of the current crop of vampire fiction. But it's not my place to dictate how someone should write...and God knows I'm not a 'real vampire' or a vampire expert - who is here? The fiction writers are creating their own little worlds of what they think a vampire is or should be - and making money while doing it. Capitalism at its best. No big deal.

Eh, this fangs thing is over-rated. Vampires in movies and novels are the fantasy of the creator and nothing more. They should not be compared. There are no knew story lines. I keep hearing things about old books I have never read yet they have similar ideas to my own. Frankly I am getting tired of it, lol.

I don't even know if I get the CW. I don't put down a movie, book or series because the characters are teens. I look at the overall story. This might be interesting but like they have with other topics they may very well be over-saturating the market with too many stories of this type. I want to watch something that isn't hunt and chase, sex scenes and murder every episode. Something with more meat than that.

I've loved The Vampire Diaries since they came out 15 years ago...and had been hunting for them for years before they were re-released and continued! But after seeing the previews on the CW...the casting is TERRIBLE! They are going to destroy the spirit of the books and the characters!!

Some very interesting and well written responses...don't think i can match them, but, the 'new' adaptation of vampires does bother me. so i will voice my opinion? i have been obsessed with vampires since i first knew what one was.......believe me, a very long time! and the vampire i fell in love with, obsess over, is the one we all grew up with: men/women of strength, power, lust, mystery and yes, usually drank you dry and left you for dead unless you were the lucky one he/she wanted to keep. so i guess evil? but then again.....i like a little bit of evil in my life. so the new takes on vampires are, excuse me, but 'whimpy'. like everything else evolving......gone is the chivalry, the power, the lust, the blood, the total control and it has been replaced with politically correct, men/women in 3 piece suits lamenting about their bad fortune at what they are and being the savior for not turning anyone else into their nightmare. i guess it's appropriate for today's generation, young minds, what have you....but as for me? i'll just pull out my explicit vampire novels and movies of old and dream some more of meeting my own someday!

Seems a bit pedophilic as well as predatorial. Granted, the vampire is a predator, but a pedophile? Give me a friggin break already. What is the media trying to tell society, that to be a vampire the individual has to stalk minors? Come on already... Anyway a month or two ago I found out I have 4 books of this series.

I bought them a few years ago but never had the chance to read.

So far I read the first book and two chapters from the second one. I like it so far, even though many would consider it cliche' but so what, I am enjoying reading it.

we all have diffrent opinions of Vampires my kind of vampire as to being neutral and doesnt pick sides will kill either good or bad if they get in the way . Well, many witches were killed because a diary, so, why should a Vampire create a trail of action in a piece of paper? the answer for me is, no, A diary will be not a good idea.
