Why do you think Vampires and werewolves like to stay hidden so much, or be dead to the world, if you prefer?
They don't exist. In fiction where they do exist they'd probably do it because otherwise they'd be persecuted.
Particularly where "Vampires" are concerned, either they don't exist... or perhaps... just perhaps... they are not as portrayed and popularized in fiction. In their true form they just might not resemble what fiction writers have chosen to define as "vampires" in their movies and books.
As a result, perhaps they walk by us every day yet we don't recognize them for who they truly are.

I think they are "dead" to the world for mainly personal reasons. Ones that I know that have confided in me tell me it's more society that they hide from. Most of society has the notion from Hollywood that they kill and they are monstrous beings, when the majority of them are very peaceful people.
Maybe because to many are overly infaturated by them and want to be like them.
Mass Hysteria frenzy for Immortality!??
Because in myth and folklore they are portrayed as evil, as monsters, they have no place in society.
I don't think it would be right to hear the line Auntie Maureen and Uncle Frank who run the local pastry shop are evil blood sucking vampire, but hey, they do make a mean belgian bun, Bram Stokers Dracula.
Wherewolves stay in the dark because it makes for a scarier story.Vampires hide and stay hidden because that makes for a better stoy too.
Maybe true Vampires arent at all what everyone thinks they are, and that they are in fact, out there running around in the day just like everyone else.Growing old and passing away....just like everyone else.
or...
both are the same creature, and that creature is among us all the time.
~W~
or..maybe they are all gone and only the stories still exsist...
“If vampires truly feed with even a tiny fraction of the frequency that they are depicted to in the movies and folklore, then the human race would have been wiped out quite quickly after the first vampire appeared.
Efthimiou supposed that the first vampire arose Jan. 1, 1600, around the beginning of a century during which some of the first important modern writings on vampires appeared. The researchers estimated the global population at that time, based on historical records, as 537 million.
Assuming that the vampire fed once a month and the victim turned into a vampire, there would be two vampires on Feb. 1, four the next month, and eight the month after that. All humans would be vampires within 2½ years. “Humans cannot survive under these conditions, even if our population were doubling each month,” which is well beyond human capacities, Efthimiou said.http://www.world-science.net/othernews/061024_vampire.htm
Psh, you math-y people with your math. Ruinin everything.
i bet they don't even drink blood. They eat sunshine and baby seals. mostly sunshine though, as to keep the ultimate ace up their sleeve
The world abhors the dark lifestyle and seeks to destroy all that it portrays.
Why would you want to be made the brunt of ridicule? If you were sinister, you would want to have the inside road to surprise, especially if you were nothing like fictional vampires. Why make things complicated.
This is an awfully big website if they don't exist. See, words evolve, and that evolution of meaning still means something. (Now that this point is across)
For me, it's because I like to have jobs. Yeah, jobs and cars. Certain things I believe in just don't look good on an application. At least not yet.
Look at it this way, if you were made out to be a killer, evil, and overall bad guy, would YOU show your face with a smirk on it? Ok, maybe you would, but what if all those people who hated you were also trying to kill you. The threat of, you know, death, kinda gets to some people. Not all, im sure, but most people dont wanna die just yet.
first...one cant assume that they feed every night ...or that each feeding takes a life...or that the lost life is returned as a vampire.
the only way a vamp is possible is if the reproductive process of the vampire is controlled by the vampire.
if they are supernatural creatures that do drink blood to live, then one can assume they only take a bit...if they did kill, they could neutralize the new vampire before it awoke.
if they arent supernatural creatures, but rather a living being that feeds on blood energy, then you would hide it to avoid ridicule (as has been said already), and also the amount of blood would again be small.
~W~
It's very simple.... because they don't want to be ridiculed by the general populous that believe we do not exist.
...Because they only come out to hunt. Is the law of the beast.
Religion and Zealots maybe, if you believe that true vampires exist out there. Akin to the children of the light on True Blood, you could kind of see that happening, religious nuts changing their rage from homosexuals and Lady Gaga to Vampires. Maybe its a way of surviving, if no one knows they exist then noone can hunt them down. Live as a myth, and survive.
I really don't see how one can say they are staying hidden or dead to the world as long as there is literature, fiction or otherwise. If one truly was trying to stay hidden or secretive...well they aren't doing a great job of it lol
Humans..tend to kill that which is different..
a vampire..may have a lifestyle suited to lurking..for either the survival method of their species..or for a personal preference...
they do exist...just don't trust your eyes..
Personally it's just easier to me.. To only tell those I feel like telling. The hate and "racism'' that tags along with lack of knowledge to the unknown can be very draining and scary at times.. As a few before me have said it can even be taken to the point of death..
I do not desire conflict on any level so with me it is personally to avoid the inept, intolerant, and ignorant.
My three "i"s :)
Only do I reveal myself to those who wish to know..
I look relatively "normal" Aside from piercings, tattoos, and my style of pinup meets my mind :)
Amongst the people around me, and those who are my clients, they would never suspect such a different side. Most know my obsession with Vampires and The unknown, but only select few known me.
Never do I lie about it.. If I am asked I tell, I am not ashamed of myself. I have a child to protect so after having him thing's got a lot different.
they remain hidden because some things are better off unknown i think.
Oh come on, like its hidden...how many movies are so close to the truth nowadays.I discuss it with my otherkin mates they may as well say Hi n wave...
TRUTH IS-It's the other way around most people are like Lah Lah Lah I,m not listening!
Nightwatch...erase the invisible red herrings.Laughs.
They stay hidden because they don't want to be hated, persecuted or killed.
Most people just don't want to beleive or accept it. So they have to stay hidden, and yet still have to "blend" (I use this term lightly) into societies norms. Not very easy.
But I do think through Twilight and Tru Blood, they are slowly becomming more accepted
Where I live, if I were to come out of the "closet" I would be literally burned at the stake... Only my husband, and a really close friend of mine know about me(and obviously the people on here, but I'm talking about in real life)... And no, I am not the "normal" looking vamp... I am very social... I love to be around people... Yes I have alot of black clothing, but not for the purpose of being "dark" or "goth" I have them because I had body issues, and let's face it, black makes 99% of people look thinner... But now that I don't really have those issues, I wear bright colors like hot pink, and yellow, and such... And also I do go around in the daylight... The sun does not hurt me... Anyway, but to answer the question, I believe that most stay hidden because they fear rejection, and they fear what the religious nuts will do to them...

I love Upir's answer! Yet, I would like to state further that they live in the minds of the individuals that commit the acts that we deem acts of vampires and werewolves, so inconceivable, that only a supernatural creatures could commit such an act upon another fellow human being.
I think there are more things in Heaven and Earth Horatio...
Degrees of otherkin seem self evident, mankind evolves and hidden forces play their role in the great debate ? Technology and the thirst for knowlege wittle away at the wooden doors with barely any regard for the consequence of what maybe lurking the otherside. Bows and vanishes.
I agree with Ishta, its just because fiction gives them a bad rep, kinda like what they did with witches.
In my opinion, it is the fear of mockery. Such as people who just come right out and say "Vampyres don't exist." There's a difference between saying Vampyres don't exist and In my opinion, Vampyres don't exist. That's the very reason right there!! At least it is for me.
that's a good point.
people these days are so quick to judge others, and so fast in their denial of anything paranormal, spiritual, or supernatural. and this is why the only vampires who talk about being vampires are the total nutjobs, which of course the media loves portraying them as such.
i believe most hide because even if they were to openly admit they where a vampyre... people would assume they are like the ones in books/ tv.... that kind of vampire is the farthest thing from reality, but thats all people know... so it's actually more troublesome than anything else.
Most people... even many on this site don't know the difference from myth and reality about drinkers... but many aren't open minded enough to care to believe anyways.
My observation is that those who identify as vampires are very open about their adopted identity, yet they seldomly offer any substancial info on what model the adopt, not even a basic summary.
The excuse is often," We are secretive about that."
So the discretion allows for " coming out", but not educating?
people think that a special Quality is added to them personally, if they are perceived as being secretive, elusive. *shrugs*
sometimes people are naturally secretive, I have been secretive ever since I was about 3.
Well as for coming out very few really do, they just make a Profile that may or may not be about them and talk a load of smack to smudge the scent.
Occasionally somebody gives the right answers but those correct answers are actually closely guarded. This is why its not common knowlege and never will be.
Not for being secrative but to weed out the nuts n wanna bees.Dude you would not believe how role players there are!
