When does fringe become gratuitous?
What is the common denominator of fringe cliche?
Do you mean, in terms of occult beliefs, or general beliefs outside the conventional mainstream?
Both work, What behavior makes Trekkies say whoa, thats far out?
*shrug*
Probably something ironic to them, like religious fanaticism.
When you start to pray to Edward Cullen as a G-d. LMAO.
Then you have gone beyond the fringe...
LOL I love the TV show myself . as too say when is too much Fringe I think would have to be when I look around and all I see is space and more space ... maybe. not really sure very good question my dear Dabbler ;)
Who is to say what is fringe and what is not? Based off of the way(s) one lives, or accepts the way(s) that one is taught? Hell, a goth might call a preppy in a suite that has the entitlement of mayor a bit fringe, but they would base this off of what? Reverse psychology goes along way.
Fringe.. can be seen as the point where rational, and logical, unravel.. It is one thing to have a conviction that
aliens exist on others planets, a little further on the spectrum, are those who are convinced that said aliens are traveling to earth.. then out in the unravel area, is the person that is convinced that they are being controlled (or visited) by aliens.
As well as aliens controlling the government... But I digress.
That is when it starts to unravel.. The people that wear the Tin Foil hats.. I say the are fringe, but if someone insist that people change the material to compansate for the Anologe to digital shift.. then all of a sudden the Tin Foil hat wearers are down a notch..
Dabbler,
I never heard the word (Fringe) before, I just looked it up and it said "to the edge".
I would say it is one's surroundings that determine such a thing.
Example: When I was in school, I knew a kid that got all (A) and (A+). He got them for every thing, in every class, every year. Then one day in a class in the 8th grade, he was given a (B+). He completely lost it and started crying his eyes out and he fell to his knees and wouldn't stop crying.
I gave this example to show how we build our own environments and create our own little things to go into extremes over.
Relating this to ones deep love for something like a sci-fi show or comic book, and you can see how someone might easily dwell upon it in the same way.
However, when it comes to something like aliens, it depends more on what their experiences were. If they are just fanatic about finding more info, then sure... it fits.
Actually, the biggest Fringe for people would be the Internet. When it was first given to the world. No one would seep, eat, shower, work... nothing... they just sat in front of their computers amazed at all the information the net had. If this isn't Fringe, then I don't know what is.
If you are the only one doing it, and none of your friends support you when your practice is challenged by other friends.
I follow that KGL.. toward the end you made more sense selective.
Too often I see people in company of "open minded" people, people with interest in odd idealism. Once the person realizes that they are average in such a group, they push the envelope.
Example; Instead of simply agreeing with others that
that ghost are real, they will up their pitch to.. "I was attacked by a ghost."
It involves something similar to one upsmanship.
Uhm... when people lose the sense of reality and get obsessed with their idea only?
Hoarder - a person who accumulates things and hides them away for future use.
This would be Too Fringe!
I've seen documentaries of such people, and they hoard things so much, that they have no bed or couch to sleep on, they have no access to anything in their kitchen, they can't even find food they bought so they get fast food instead. Then when they try to remove some stuff, animal poop is found and even sometimes dead animals.
Watch this 6 minute interview with the maker of the Documentary titled "My Mother's Garden, Coping With Compulsive Hoarding"

I've already seen the documentary, it's very good.
I think that each persons *fringe* would depend how strong minded they are to begin with , then test themselves as to just how far they can taake it to the Edge *fringe*
You would be surprised I think as to how many could possibly have a very strong threshole as to what is too fringe.
An observation is all. ;)
Too far would be losing a sense of reality, leaning towards the fringe or verge of insanity on an issue or subject. Such as you stated. I wouldn't base it on being stuck in an era of words used or how one dresses, that's just personal likes.
i love star trek...but if i meet someone that dresses in star fleet uniforms as day to day clothes, home schools their kids and teaches them klingon...
id say thats a bit out there!
met a guy not too long ago in a kilt. i complimented him on his kilt and he felt the need to give me his card and explain to me how he was actually of a clan of klingons that had their own tartan. i felt just embarrassed for him!
when i find myself embarrassed for another's odd behavior...that would be a good indication.

I believe the border between Fringe and generalization is having a unique stance and speaking openly about it.
It's funny how people adore those who 'are themselves' regardless of what society thinks, but still think insane people belong in asylums.
I have a very good grasp of the English language I think but I had to look up the word, "gratitious" and the dictionary says there is no such word. Could you tell me what you meant by the use of that word? Hard to answer when I don't know what you are meaning.
The idea of fringe is relative to the individuals. I find people who believe in things without checking the source of what is being taught to them to be fringe. Then again, belief is not a fact. Peru must be fringe because if you go up into the Andes they have signs where UFOs have been sighted, etc. all over. UFOs are a very controversial topic so it would depend on what you wanted to believe and if you had no contact with anything like that other than what others have written you might very likely not believe in the idea and consider it fringe. Although I have to say there are many established organizations studying the reported phenomenon that to my mind takes it out of the area of fringe after so many years. Some of the people involved are considered very reputable. I think the problem lies in the fact that we haven't had a "Day the Earth Stood Still" type of interaction. I don't know what I believe about it, but don't consider it fringe really.
I don't use the term Trekkie. I consider that a media term but rather Trekker. There have been for years...and I mean years many devoted to Star Trek and they dress and set up their own organizations. I don't think at this point any of that could be considered fringe since it is so commonplace now. Even at Cal Poly in Pomona they had a whole StarFleet organization there with titles for crew and outfits they wore etc. It's a hobby for them. In the past I saw various celebrities who were fans as well going to the conventions, lol.
Fringe to me are those that persist to say the Earth is flat. I think the original guy who started this group is passed but it was re-created with people still believing this idea.

The Hollow Earth theory which yet has to be proven, That the US never went to the moon and it was all faked, there was no holocaust and things of this nature, while they believe things that any rational person normally would consider far-fetched at best in the name of religion. This is all fringe to me. Dressing differently and things like that, eh, to each there own.
You wrote this ----> When does fringe become gratitious?
I thought gratuitous is what you meant but that wasn't what you put on the thread. I wanted to be sure. Thanks for the clarification. I answered anyway.
There are many subjects that are outside the mainstream of traditional science and academia-the Fringe. Choose your poison and start talking. Fanaticism is another story, or zealotry. Exaggeration can quickly become dillusional, if your too caught up in a subject-which I think is what Dabbler was alluding too above when he said some people will just continue to have the last word, or the top story, in whatever subject they are involved in. Its how countless rumors have started, someone will say I heard a story...then, to top it, someone else will say, "Yeah, but I saw it..." And so on.
sort of like mating with bigfoot to make a baby elvis clone?
lol
that would be pretty fringe.
wanna see fringe? watch springer sometime.
~W~
I saw some CRAZY shyt after I had my baby and I was on vacation in Atlantic Beach NC. Message me Dabbler and I'll tell you the whooole story.
For everyone else.. long story short...
My mother and I (who is actually normal) were sitting on the deck smoking and out on the ocean was an aircraft carrier (a navy ship). All of a sudden these lights started appearing, disappearing and reappearing in different spots. Then the aircraft carrier had a fire on it. I called the coast guard to call it in. Well they ended up calling us back saying it was a fucking tug boat!! (It was NOT a tug... I have worked on boats and been around boats and trollers all my life and that was no tug). When we got off the phone to go back outside, the ship was gone.
There's a lot more to this story. This is just the short version. Being this as it is, I do believe that there is something out there, that the government knows what it is, and that they are trying to hide it!
Good gawd, if Lordwolf didn't smack it squarely in the grille-WATCH SPRINGER! Much to my embarrassment, I'm guilty of having watched that twit of a show for more than ten minutes once. Abruptly, I came to my senses and switched over to the History Channel just in time to catch an episode of WWII in HD.
Dabbler - I have edited your opening post.
To everyone else, some of these posts are steering a little too far off topic. Don't reply to a thread unless you have something to add to the discussion. This of course diminishes the number of replies and ensures the thread a longer...life. Obviously, providing that that thread continues to remain on topic and in accordance with the rules and regulations regarding the forum.
