Concerns about donating and drinking blood:

Because of the medical dangers to both donor and vampyre, Sharing of blood can pose a serio health hazard to both the Vampyre and the donor:

There are many blood-borne diseases that can be transmitted from donor to Vampyre. One example is the HIV virus -- the virus that causes AIDS. Even a miniscule, unnoticed injury to the Vampyre's gums can allow the donor blood to enter the blood stream and infect the Vampyre.

Blood cannot be safely drawn from a donor without trained medical assistance.
Excessively enthusiastic donors may damage their health by donating too much blood at one time, or by drawing blood too frequently.

Excessively enthusiastic vampyres might consume too much blood at one sitting. This could lead to an overdose of iron or other blood component.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies suggests as a general guide:
The donor should be in good health.
They should weigh more than 45 or 50 kg (about 100 or 110 pounds).
They should be aged between 18 and 65.
They should meet the guidelines necessary to protect the health of both donor and receiver.
Donate about 450 to 470 ml maximum. 10,11

BloodBook.com suggests additional requirements:
The donor should be feeling well.
Their pulse should be 80 to 100 beats per minute, and regular.
Body temperature should not exceed 99.5 F or 37.5 C.
Blood pressure between 160/90 and 110/60.
The donor site should be free of any lesion or scar.

I got these information from previous research of diffrent web sites and reading.

so doesn't any of you worry about that ??

I only drink blood that belongs to myself and one other person, who I plan on marrying in the future. We know that neither of us have any STDs or diseases. And if either of us are not feeling well, we don't do it. The first time we did it by biting but since then have adopted using lancets to draw the blood. It's a lot easier for the 'prick' to heal and less chance of getting an infection.

My main reason on posting this thread is for people to know the dangers for the ones who already do it and the ones who plan to do it and i guess to get some insight on this for myself 2.

yeah, but you risk your life every time you cross the road. statistically, it is far more dangerous. do you think about that? you risk your health everytime you smoke a ciggy, everytime you take a drink, every breath of polluted air you breathe, everytime you eat at a restaurant, or fast food joint you risk serious food poisoning, everytime you have sex with a stranger you expose yourself to dangers, everytime you drink a glass of water you are taking in chemicals - the long term side effects are unknown.
either you go through life paranoid and in too much fear to enjoy anything, or you say hang it all, and just get on with your life.

I personally will not drink from a donor that hasn't had blood work done to determine that there are no blood born illness running in thier veins.

I also will not drink if a donor is sick w/ any kind of regular illness such as a cold or flu.

I do worry, that's why I am safe. I only drink small amounts, taken by means of a sterile blade or lancet to the arm or finger.

I have not had a drink of blood in quite awhile, but I am very careful when I drink. I also never drink from a stranger, I must know the person and know that they are of good health and that there are no diseases in their body.

Thank you for the information!

I agree with karnstein though. I mean there are so many things that one can die from... Of course there is!

I just want to have one less one to worry about. And a disease is definitely no walk in the park.

You must choose your donors carefully. If you take procautions and have sense about it. You will be fine. If you don't drink or have the thirst then you couldn't understand the essence or need of it.

so far I do not "drink" I mostly place it in my mouth and let it sit on my tongue f while then I spit it out, even so I do check and make sure that my donor , who is my roomate for now, is safe and feeling well.
So far he feeds me and I feed him, as I am anemic he watches over meosely when we do it, he feeds and absorb it. Still my roomate is the one who taugh me more about safety, I was not really caring about my anemia but he was always watching.

We both dont have any std and my only diseases are not blood related (bipolair, and HAIT syndrom) exept for anemia.

Protecting the health of oneself and of the donor is of grave importance to me. Therefore, I will not drink from anyone, not even friends, unless we both have been tested for HIV, and the like. Luckily this has never proved to be a problem. And willing donor should know that getting tested is the best thing for them, so when I encounter someone, they usually have the proof that they are infact clean.

I also helps if you don't drink directly from the person, or bite them with your teeth. The human mouth is by no mean sanitary, and it's best if they use a sterilized razor (or whatever they are comfortable with) and cut themselves or allow the vampyre to do it. And then, drink it from a cup. Safety is always the most important thing when you deal with the blood.

Most, if not all, of those who are sanguine are aware of the biohazards of blood. Precautions are always taken to prevent cross contamination of the sang and the donor. Also many sangs follow the Sanguinariums "Black Veil" in their relationship with the donor. The "Black Veil", recently was edited to refer to blood as only a metaphor. The practice of sanguine Vampyrism is dangerous because risk of infection, not only with Hepatitis and HIV, but any opening of the skin where saliva is introduced . A serious blood infection, septacemia, if left untreated by antibiotics will kill you. This is why other than the the classic "blood sucking" method, use of sterile sharps are suggested. The use of IV needles and tubes is the safest way to obtain blood for those who feed for more than a drop or two. A pint or more may be obtained, with little pain, and no contamination.

I think it depends how seriously you take this- I personally have never wanted a syringes worth, so use other means.

The community tells at least those organizations like I belong to, to get medical testing. Not only for the donor but for the vampyre that requires one. I am not a blood drinker but my understanding is the blood must be fresh to have any real value as it isn't the blood itself but the lifeforce energy in the blood. It dissipates over time to nothing. If blood is let to set it spoils. You must drink it fresh to gain anything from it.

Well of course I worry about it--doesn't everyone. I personally have only drank off one person, she is my best friend. She meets are the requirements and is pretty darn tasty. Besides--she's already been tested, and so have I.

I'm not worried that badly because I don't drink off of just anyone.

All he best points have been made. You need to watch out who you're dealing with. If yo trust a person, then there is really no danger to you unless the person themselves screws you over.

In which case, I suppose you put your life in the wrong hands and bad things can happen. But if you sit there and obsess about every little thing, you'll wind up in a little padded room. Waiting for another lame statistic to kill you.

Stress kills more people that viruses derived from drinking blood does.

Wow. Nice responses. How about some insight from a donor. That would be me. I've been a donor for about 11 years. As an active donor, that would amount to about 150 receivers. However, in my case it's more like 200. Now, some of you might see that as a lot, but in reality, it's a whole lot.
Being a donor is something I am proud of and will not stop due to worrying about every disease in this world. I am very careful to learn about my receiver. As I think they should be careful about me. I have blood work done every 6 months. I don't require blood work from a receiver, but I do get to learn them and their habits first.
The best advice I could give anyone is, be picky. Blood is life. Make sure you take care of both.

drinking blood is not anymore risky than having sex. I'm not saying that's not risky even if you know and trust your partner just that drinking blood has basically the same risks. You should take precautions with both have your donor regularly tested as well as yourself. An overdose of iron or other blood component is not that likely because most people cant drink more than about an ounce at a time without getting sick, so unless you are drinking multiple times a day an overdose is not likely. The average vampire really only needs to feed about once a week unless you are feeding on less than an ounce per feeding. Someone mentioned boiling blood to sterilize it, I don't think that would work as the blood would coagulate(sp) before it be sterilized. As far as taking to much from a donor since you normally take an ounce or less per feeding so a donor could donate up to 16 times a month without a problem.

I'm certainly no advocate of paranoia. (In fact, I'm a great fan of Natural Selection and entropy, so go and enjoy yourselves by all means!)

One thing that just has me shaking my head are the claims again and again of having "been tested." For what and how often? For HIV? Even if you trust that test, there are incalculable sources of other infection/contagion that you are encountering continually. Further, many illnesses have latency periods where no symptoms show but the host is contagious.

Don't get me wrong...testing for HIV had better be a minimal requirement, but don't kid yourself that you know what is in someone's body and that you have a complete handle on the risk. Chalk it up to a gamble every time, one in which you cannot calculate the odds.

The average vampire should only drink a hamster's worth.
It's not that much.
And those who overindulge, well prepare for a stomache ache from hell!

*muwahaha*

Sorry.

But anyway, all vamps should limit to only one or two donors. Not taking percautions will only lead to disease and you spreading it with your ravenous hunger.

Think of the humans!

Ah, the redundant question of ignorance and knowledge. I do consume blood of others, but unlike many people I know, I only feed from people I've known for a decent amount of time. Sometimes, though, there will be someone I wish to feed from whom I am unsure about healthwise, so before any bloodletting occurs, I make them run bloodtests and show me the results.

A good rule of thumb is to only drink from a person you would sleep with!

It is always good to see an awareness of this subject within the forum, but really there is no good that can come from flogging a dead horse....

I do worry about the dangers so thats why I only drink blood from one person. I also make sure that they are healthy. However if you think about it, you can get sick eating regular food, such as e. coli. Everything has its dangers. You just have to exercise caution.

If you're going to drink blood, it's only common sense that you know and have some sort of bonding with your donor (long term or not) and know that they have been tested for any and all STD's and vice versa. If the donor or the vampire themself isn't "clean" it just makes a mess for all.

As for drawing blood, there are definately dangers. Some more than others. A small cut in the arm or wrist (not directly near the vein) is a good newbie spot. The cutting and penetration of the neck is definately a risk and needs to be taken seriously.

Necromorphis, I think if you were a donor and there might be a chance that the 'vampire' has some kind of disease, I would think you would care; I know I definitely would.

I decided just about four months ago that I wanted to drink blood, so in preperation for it I went and got tested for any/all diseases including HIV/AIDS. When I do find the person that I would like to sher this with, I expect them to respect me and themselves enough to do the same.

I was just reading other post here and someone explained that HIV/AIDS can't be transferred by blood drinking because blood is not absorbed by the stomach, however, if you have any open wound in your mouth, or any ulceration, you can get infected anyways, so that's why I prefer well known donors... (I don't like much that word) friends...

First off, let me address the AIDS issue.
1: You can get AIDS from drinking blood
2: A hamster size amount is enough to catch it
3: HIV has an incubation period that can last for several months leaving both parties unaware

Secondly, there are many other diseases one can catch other than HIV. Hepetitus is a blood born pathogen along with many others. And NO most STD's are not contracted through feeding. That's why they are STD's. Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Not blood born.

And lastly, Necromorphis.
I can only say that I'm appalled that you would think that a donor doesn't care about their health or the health of the vampire feeding from them. Each and every one of us, be it donor or vampire should care greatly about our health.

Excellent Post. For myself, on the rare occasion I drink blood, it is only with one of my two mates. Its akin to unprotected sex to me, only do it once you have absolute knowledge and trust in your partner.

Necromorphis I think you are confusing fictional vampires and true vampires. A true vampire is human and mortal and therefore susepatable to the same things as any other human.

Trust? someone I know? Just because you know and trust someone doesn't mean they didn't get some disease they might not even be aware of before you met them. There is also the chance they may betray your trust or get a disease from an innocent contact. Some diseases have very long incubation periods. Some std's can't be passed by the blood and some you don't even have to have sex just skin contact with an infected person. Regular testing is very important for both parties no matter how well you know and trust them whether it's for blood or sex.

I learned a trick from dragonspawn. Take a decent amount of your own blood, and freeze it. give yourself some time to regenerate the blood that you took out of yourself. After a few days pass, take the blood and thaw it out, warm it a little to body temperature, and inject it back into your body. This effect makes you feel incredibly powerful as if you took steroids. The up-side is that you can't give yourself any disease that you didn't already have since it is your own blood, but of course you should use sterile needles to do this.

marbo69 - the only difference I could see between a rare steak and blood directly from the cow is that the direct blood is from a living creature who's blood is still flowing. Blood from a rare steak is obviously from a dead carcass. So, I guess it all depends on what your prerogative is ;) lol

Now I did'nt say you had to take it from a living cow. You can always obtain it from your butcher. They don't know if you are going to drink it or cook with it.
