There is such a wide range of tarot decks out there that it is hard to know which is the best to use.
Is it really just the readers preference? Or do you find one tarot deck seems to be more reliable than others?
you have to get a deck that feels right in your hands, everyone has different reasons for using the ones that they use, i use the ones i have because they just feel right to me when i use them. that is how i decide
I agree, you have to use a deck that YOU feel most comfortable using, and you'll know when you feel the deck in your hands.
its a comfort thing. I personaly like the cat people deck.
It always tells me what I need and already know ...
I think it has more to do with the person using the cards. I had a friend that used a dragon deck. It was cool. I personally stay away from tarot cards because the last time I did a reading some died.
WOW.... I am sorry to hear that someone died after you did a reading.
Do you think that you were somehow responsible?
Also depends on how you are feeling that day. Many have more than one deck. I have three with my sister owning my first deck that is thirty plus years old. A few decks of mine have disappeared over the years. Plus there is the art work on the decks. Makes a great collection.
each deck is different I recomend looking at several and find the one that you feel most comfortable with. And not the one with the best pictures
you will know when you pick them up which "feel" right to you
It's all in the feel. The Tarot is a magical took; and just like any magical tool you need to have the spiritual energy connection in order to find familiarity and comfort.
I would recommend, if at all possible, to locate and visit a metaphysical bookstore so that you can physically handle a varity of decks. Most large chain book stores won't let you open the decks.
I personally like the Rider-Waite tarot card deck the pictures are great on that deck...
oh, i hate the rider waite pack. it was the first pack i got coz when i started reading tarot cards it was the only pack that was commercially available. now there are thousands to choose from, and all have their own merit. i have many packs - but my favourite is the tarot of the cat people - they are very beautiful, and i feel so comfortable with them.
my advice is look through samples (some shops have a sample book, and you can see samples on the internet) until you find a pack you like the look of. looks are very important
I beleive that when you get a new deck of tarot cards, you have to take time to get aquainted with them.
Spend a bit of time each day shuffling and giving yourself some simple readings.
Then after a while when you feel 'at home' with the cards you can read others.
Never lend your cards out though. And do not share cards.
The cards should get used to you and you shold get used to them. You dont need extra energy muddled up with it.
I think that the more you use a certain deck, the more comfortable you get with it.
fatalreaction is right the more i use my unicorn deck the more comfortable it is to me and it seems to make the readings go easier
I have used many different decks in my long years as a reader of the tarot, and i find that the deck sems to choose you more than you choosing your deck.
I think you should look at some of the different decks that are on the market and when you find one that will woprk for you as well as mine do, you will know.
M
My decks attracted me to them and i have been with my personal deck for about 8 years now it is what feels right when you see them.
Pick up a few decks, then use the one that feels right. Trust me you'll know.
when i got my deck it was kool because i liked the cards it was on the third page they were made in 1974 and there were the 10th cards in the row, now i birth day is march 10 1974... i had to get them
Even if you are just looking at them on line. Just make sure they have some pics of the cards. Start with a concept that you like. Spread out from there feel the pics as you see them in your mind.
When you find the deck for you you will just know it. This can also work for friends if you are giving them a gift (I should know I did it for me and a couple friends as well).
Remember each deck has its own personality even decks of the same type differ. One of the first readings I do with a deck (even when I had less of a clew then I do now) is an interview:
Ask it what if will offer
Ask it what you think you and it will act with each other.
Ask it what you will need to do to keep it working for you.
Well something along those lines anyway. But that is after you find the deck for you.
I have three decks. One wants to trick you, it is commonly a little off and vague, it might tell the you the truth but it might add odd facts and things that relate to other things. Then I have a different deck that is right to the point most of the time, though it does share some traits as the first one. My last one it predicted in the interview that is was just going to be sitting on the shelf untouched and it has so far.
If you want to know which decks I seemed to have posted them here in the same order as I have them in my profile.
But trust what you see and feel with the deck. Since even when I picked them out for my friends I could feel the decks I ordered call out to me, even scream here and there when I gave them away (sounds odd but to me it happened).
But I am starting ramble to much. Plus I am only a month and a half into using tarot so I am still not that perfect yet. So take what I said with a grain of salt at least.
Here is a link to Llewellyn's free tarot generator. You can choose from 11 different decks and different spreads.
It is probably okay to cycle throught the decks to look at the pictures, but I wouldn't ask a question each time.

You can also sign up with Llewellyn for free Tarot updates. If you don't know, Llewellyn is a big publisher of Pagan and New Age works.
Good luck in your search,
I did not post this but ill do it now.
http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/
That is the biggest site that can has the most decks. Reviews, pics of the decks, and as many different ypes you can think of. Be they homemade (in a few cases) to ones that have been around a loong time. They have spreads that people made/ found in a booklet/book that they want. It is where I go for many things online and is a really good spot.
another good site is http://www.tarot.com....many,many decks. really an amazing amount of artwork in tarot cards. i started with the rider, tried the crowley, liked the dragon, used mother earth for a while and finished by making my own. (this is over 35yrs tho..)
my dear it is the feeling with in ur hands that will let u know which deck is right for u, when u find the right deck u will know.
I agree... most people that I know that deal with Tarot have 2 or 3 different decks that they use for different types of personalities or just people in general...
The best way to choose a deck is to choose the one that calls to you the most... when you have it in your hands you will know.
My deck chose me, It isn't my first deck but it is quite reliable all the readings i have done with it seem to be correct too. I am looking for a new deck however as i miss using the Vampire tarot (which was my first deck) but i am finding it hard to get hold of.
I myself deal with runes, but one day I hope to find a deck that I feel comfortable with and chooses me as well... the runes that I have I felt a connection the first time I touched them, but I constantly try to keep the connection growing by touching them daily... this would be the same for dealing with a tarot deck.. feeling the connection to the deck
Honestly, the deck chooses you. I went about 3 years before I found a deck that was perfect for me. But it took my brother about 10 minutes to have one get him. The pictures are good to use as a way to choose one, but that is not what makes the deck. It is only the energy and the how it feels to you.
xextremehatex i have 2 different types of runes and i still find tarot more indepth hin
Can anyone read tarot here? I would love to have a reading!!
i was told that u should never purchases ur own deck of tarot. that they should be given to u. is this not true?
BloodLust1724 you can buy your own. Just remember you need to have a feel of the deck before hand. Be it from just looking at whats posted online (pics) or holding it your hand.
xxEmaeraldxx I can read, I still new at it and I cannot do it today (the day of this post) if you want it I can to it tomarow. Every bit of pratic will do me good.
if u wanna practice on me u can law. id be glad to have mine read and help u at the same time.
BloodLust1724 hitting two things at once is always good.
I would say what deck but I already know that (out of my first two right now I am switching back and forth and have a deck of the week. Though this week is the harder deck so this should be a good practice).
I agree with the other's if a deck feels right then it is the right one for you.
I think the deck u learned it with, is the best, beside u are always in pratice with it
hmm i want to learn to use tarot cards.. never heave tho.
i know there are many different types but i have no idea what type of deck does what or what they are best for.
Prey the many different tarot decks in part just fit different types of people and ways of thinking. Not many are truly focused on one goal.
Though some help with a goal better then others.
It's true that one should find the deck that feels akin to you...but, you should also take into consideration that you may wish to purchase more than one deck...I myself have three...one for general questions...one for in depth answers...and one for reading I do for friends or with lovers. Overall it is which deck you like. Just make sure you keep them near to get your energy on them and you should be fine...but if not...try runes...for some people those work better.
I went through three decks before I found the one for me (the vampire tarot, I shit you not). Ive been working with that one now for 7+ years. It's a good relationship.
I also have a few decks that I use. My favorite is my "Tarot of the Old Path" deck.
It uses a lot of Wiccan symbolism and I feel a more spiritual connection to this deck. I also have a "Mythic Tarot" deck and a "Rider-Waite" deck.
The best deck of tarot cards , are the ones that feel right to you, just try to use as many decks as possible or look at as many decks as you can and see if you can find the deck that feels right to you...
I dont use Tarot decks myself but my wife does and she has a few decks mainly gifts from ppl but I do see that she has a perfered deck which she uses most of the time wether she knows it or not I dont kn.
I think it also is similar to choosing a sword, it talks to you, it radiates towards you, making you feel it is ready to be taken to be use, to serve you. Tarot cards are the same in the sens they tell you if they are ready to be taken and that they are ready for you and not another person but you.
(((Sorry hit the wrong button)))
So my last sentence was, they choose you not the other way around.
Well I took my time in getting my first deck, in fact my mother ended up getting it for me as a christmas present and its my most treasured deck... its the mythic tarot. I was looking at the decks on display and always found that deck stood out and would draw my hands to them. I also started getting hot itchy palms. So in the end I knew they were the deck for me only so did my mother and she got them.
I am also like billy the just... I have a collection of tarot decks that I find useful to answering different questions. I currently am in love with the doreen virtue decks they are lovely cards that feel very gentle and soft in my hands, so I know the deck was created with love.
I am also with you Karnstein I have never liked the rider-waite deck, never sure why but I don't even like looking at them.
I also use runes, I got the urge to get them from my father who owns a set. However I can't touch my fathers runes it feels like I am sticking my hand into a vipers nest and the stone feels like a spider on my palm... shudders... but I love my own runes.
So when it comes to choosing a deck take your time see how you feel about the deck, which one catches your eye or seems to jump to your attention.. and have fun with them.
Slightly of topic but does anyone know of a site that gives the interpretations of the cards/ Soimehwere that I can look to find what each card actually means?
