I believe the Corn Dollies have been around longer, then the Voodoo Dolls. Corn Doll are indeed used in all types of culture and spells.

My understanding of the roots of Voodoo is that it formed from elements of Catholisism and elements of Native African religions in the southern US and Caribbean during the colonization of these areas by the Spanish, French and Portugese.

I believe that corn dollies have therir origin in Native American culture and, thus, preceed the practice of VooDoo. Perhaps the "VooDoo" doll was adapted from the Corn Dollies of the Native American cultures.

There are dolls and figures that are believed to have been used for ritual work in the prehistoric ages. the first puppets i have found evidene of; originated in the use of magicks around the time of sumerians and mesopotamians. When they realized the sympathy that such objects held. It is natural that these observations were carried on up until the present day.

Most of the information that I have found on "corn dollies/dolly" refers back to native american times, whether the dolls are older than the voodoo belief I don't have an answer for.

I too believe the corn dolls were around before Vodoo, many cultures and religions in past have some similiar dolls that were used in rituals.

I honestly don't have an answer to this, it's a good question I bet many people have wondered about. I would guess they are probably within the same time range, probably pretty close to one another. I always thought that one thing in one religion can lead to another religion entirely.

The Corn doll was first as it is pagan in origin and goes past written words, to save the good spirit that let the corn grow we make a doll if the last sheaf in the field, even to day in England you will see in harvest time a sheaf corner left for the dolls to be made from.
We bring them in and share our warmth and love with the spirit them plough it back into the ground come spring and plant the seeds.
Voodoo is African slave Christianity. The voodoo doll is not the same thing it is not a fertility spirit for crops it is a tool or idol of a person one wishes to perform magic on of varying degrees of good n evil

I am going to have to go with corn dollies and the Native American culture far predates catholicism which as had previously said is where voudon gets it's roots.

According to wikipedia.org (I had to look up corn dollies because I've never heard the term before.) corn dollies were used in Druidic European culture, which is ancient.

So it boils down to which culture (or religion) is older, either Voodoo or Druidic Europe. Granted I only skimmed my search on voodoo, but I couldn't find a reference era for how ancient the pratice of voodoo is.

Biggest difference: Voodoo dolls, or poppets as they are sometimes called, are for working sympathetic magic upon a person. Corn dollies are for sympathetic magic involving the Earth--the seasons and harvest and things of that nature.

lavisbre has the right of it. As for the use of voodoo dolls, it is an adaptation off of dolls used in various european cultures for healing, if I remember specifically, it was used by what you would call spiritualists, not a specific religion. I do know that early midwives often used them to help during labor and with infant illnesses. Though, I'm not saying voodoo isn't as old, I don't know enough to say yes or no, but like it was said they didn't use dolls originally.

I believe the corn dollies came first. They were used by the Celtic cultures in Great Britain and Ireland going back before the arrival of the Romans. The corn dollies are used in conjunction with festivals such as Lughasadh. They can represent the god as a symbol of harvest sacrifice or a way to wish for a future spouse.

I think the voodoo dolls came as a result of the mixture of Spanish, African and local Caribbean cultures in the 16th-17th centuries.

While i'll forego the lenghty explination of the difference of the two. (Others have already done so) I will add that both the spiritual practice of Voodou does involve a lot of image magicks (which the use of corn dollies is but one example)

corn dollies are a very early European tradition.

They are not always in the form of a person - there are many forms, and the purpose is entirely different from voodoo. It is an offering to the Goddess to ensure a successful harvest in the coming year. traditionally, the last sheaf of corn to be harvested would be plaited to make a figure, or a cornucopia, or a crescent, which is hung up for good luck - originally hung over the doorway of the granary.

these can now be seen hanging in windows, shop doorways, almost anywhere in villages. it has become a popular folk art / craft, and it is easy to find books or websites showing how to make them. i find it easiest to practice first with plastic drinking straws.
