How is it that the folklores have lasted so long, nothing much has changed in them and some are the same basic concept. What is your opinion on this the history of vampirism and folklore it has been the same for awhile now .

I beg to differ- myths and folklore have changed quite a bit over time when it comes to vampires. Particularly if you take the last 50 years or so, the concept of what a vampire is and how they are depicted in stories and film has changed substantially.

I agree with TheDame, folklore has changed quite a bit over the years, however, the basis of all folklore hasn't really changed at all, just a few more twists added here and there.

While the base for folklore has remained, the little details are constantly changing over time. It is a fluid thing, full of differences and change.

I think a lot of things have changed, when it comes to the vampire in movies and books, but i think that the vampire lore is basically the same as it always has been, just with a lot of new things added to it...

Yes why are we so quick to think that everything has a happy ending?

Disney does not rule life. Granted I do believe in happy ever afters... it is also a result of HARD work. You can't have one without the other.

When it comes to these myths I would argue that we have humanized these monsters more. Partially I think we have Mary Shelley to thank along with the more recent workings of Anne Rice with the romanitic human monsters as the stars.

Not the soul draining beasts of early myths.

I've always believed that stories have to originate from somewhere.

I also believe the media has went through great lengths to keep evidance to the contrary of "this is mythology/folklore" exaggerated in the media today, so as to prevent people from thinking the things they see on the screen could ever exist or truly be.

I do believe, however, that stories were passed down from our ancestors to warn us of things that our societies throughout the ages would try to keep from us.

Hmmm... I think it's because people have written these things down. Plus most stories with 'morals' are trying to express the same thing, "be careful", "be patient", "think before you act"... etc... Basic human concepts to get through life.

It is due to the fact that they have changed some, but it is also the viewpoint from where we view folklore and vampires. Many of the fears and misunderstandings that were in the past have since gone away...

And, we all love a good story.

Hmmmm... Well They have changed over time ..Think of it like the lil Game Telephone the kids play.. Over time as people tell the next of the story a lil peice gets added to it and then more and more and more as time progresses there is a bit of the actual fact of history and the rest is pure folklore created by the Massive imaginations our society can manifest in their minds

I do agree with Max his concept is refreshing. But like another said it is like the game telephone it changes as we say it to someone else. Also as a child perceives the story told to them their memory may have chamged (recolection) by the time they tell their children the scarey vamp story.

i agree, vampires and their lore are evolving with people mostly via popular culture such as films, books etc plus of course a lot more people seem to be aware of the original vampire myths now such as Lilith being the spawn of creatures including vampires.

I'm going to stop now before i make a complete fool of myself lol

People have a tendency to believe everything they hear. Most people are scared of the concept of vampires, or they would be if they thought that they were real in the way they thought. Out of fear they end up thinking the worst.

Most people I suppose don't think it matters because they are "fiction".

Although all those folclores and legends change a bit form time to time, I found it really interesting when I found out stories and myths for creatures that come back from the dead, that feed from the living etc, in civilizations all over the planet... Vampires are known all over the globe, since the ancient times (King Lycaon in ancient "Greece" is nown to have been the first Werewolf ever existed. The myth says that he offered a royal meal to God Zeus in order to please him, and this meal included human parts. After that Zeus transformed Lycaon to a creature half human-half wolf -the greek word for wolf is Lycos-)
What I want to point out is that although the Vampire legends differ from area to area and from time to time, it is remarkable how they are well known to Ancient China, Brazil, Peru, Russia, Greece... Countries that had never come in contact with each other (or at least that's what we know). There must be some truth behind all those legends, myths and fiction.

ok to Diesel Hu? and to the thread... I agree with thedame b/c the image of a vampire to many still follows that hollywood trend and has came up with so many different tales, myths, and REPELLENTS, that make it become more and more popular to DESIRE and "mimick".

All myths and legends DO stem from reality. As someone far above said, it's like the game telephone.

Over centuries, they start out about real people doing real things, and as time goes by and the story is retold, it is different each time... progressing into myths and legends that we know to be works of fiction and imagination.

That could very well be true, after all there is no smoke without fire. Vampire myths have not really changed down the years, perhaps the main difference is that people don't view vampires/werewolves etc as monters now because society has evolved, such as wer'e are not bogged down with reglious folklore, we are more educated and therefore more open to different idea's.

From what I understand, all myths and legends have some grain of truth to them, therefore, I believe that the Vampire may indeed be a very real creature, or at least may have been at one time.
