Anyone know of any good Samhain rituals? I might be going to a pagan meet for Hallowe'en and it's in a very haunted location, so i'd like to combine the craft with the supernatural, but I can't think of anything that would do. I'm used to working solitary as well, so i'd need something to work as a group, or at least with two people. Any suggestions?
One thing I like is called the Dumb Supper. Dumb as in not speaking. It basically involved setting a place for the dead, a plate of food and drink to honour the ancestors and those who have passed on in the past year. You set this out during the festivities, and sometimes people leave other bits or offerings with it. Then it gets set outside somewhere when the party is over. For the ghosts, or the faeries, or the animals...whichever you like.
So...like leaving a libation then? Hmm...could work. The meet will be held outside in a public field, if that helps any.
Here is one you could modify to your needs.

ok if you are going to a "haunted place" to be cautious and remember that there is already energy there be sure to protect yourself rather well and charge everything that you'll be using with negative energy... that is all that you will get from me aside from saying that I think it is a bad idea
The celtic new year ritual has been very promising in the past i'd go with that one! and just modify it to fit ur needs hun Hugs! have fun at the fest!
I posted a Samhain ritual in my journal. It is based on the dumb supper as stated above (here called the Feast of the Dead) and written for a solitary, but I am sure it can be tailored for any event
Placing a setting for a dead loved one can be integrated into any ritual. It should be reminded that the setting is for everyone for misses someone even a pet. The place setting shouldn't be solemn, but an invitation.
Good luck in your search and I hope you find something.
As always with anything pagan, check Witchvox.com for more info.
i think the best thing you should is
1. talk to the host of the meeting and explain that you a solitary witch by nature
2. look on the internet
You could trick or treat...
Just kidding, maybe something like doing the fire thing. Put all fires out that belong to you and then relight it from a central bonfire. Just an idea.
Since the veil is thinnest between this world and the spiritual one I plan to visit a cemetery and attempt to contact a resident. If weather is bad I will stay at home and try to talk to the two spirits that reside here. Always have a backup plan. :)
If it helps any I posted a Samhain chant in my journal under spells section.
heres a nice ritual

Here is a site with Samhain rituals from several traditions of Paganism.
Rituals
I have a glass of mead by the fire and pass my thoughts and energy to those watching and those in my heart
I still love to carve crazy and hideous faces into gourds. Light them and place them by the door to ward off evil. People often forget it's a legitimate Samhain practice since it's so prevalent, even to non-pagans. lol
The Dumb Supper is an excellent suggestion as well. It is traditional to make some sort of offering to the spirits and the deceased.
Have a great time people, whatever you decide to do. I would strongly advise against utilizing negative energy in any way however. Especially with your own tools and implements. Just screams yucky, icky stuff to me. YMMV
Haunted places are fine, if you are properly and well protected. Otherwise, I'd pass on this as well. Just some friendly advice. Nothing more. :)
You could go with near anything. Honor the dead, celebrate the future, just be safe doing it.
I have always sat a place for those that are no longer with us for this celebration. I do a version of the more typical family holiday meal. We all get together and have that one place setting extra.. we do put food and drink for them. We also have each person write the names of people they are missing that year.. messages that kind of thing and set them under the plate.
Each person at the table will tell a story of someone they have been missing.. and one thing that happened that year they are thankful for. ( kinda a mix of a few different traditions)
After the meal we all go outside ( after dark of course) and in the fire pit we always have for this .. we read the names and messages and have a few moments of silence.. not all that come are wiccan so each remembers the dead in their own way... then we burn the papers sending he thoughts and all to the sky.
Even the Christian friends that have come to my dinner say they may not agree with my views on all things but they liked a meal to remember the people they have lost.
i tend to write my own and celebrate with a groupe of friends by a fire
Well i always have my dinnner ritual of setting the table for those that have passed as well, and then i attend a coven ritual. I would recommend writing your own
I think the dumb supper would work, however, put a little twist on it of your own. Whenever I do it, I always put the person's favorite thing on the plate, and beneath the plate I put a blanket for them, so that they know that they are welcome for the entire night, and not just for the celebration.
I forgot to mention that I tend to make it an all day event. I do the things the ones who passed on loved, and go on far into the night. It doesn't just have to be an evening celebration.
Since this thread started last year....... Is anyone going anywhere or doing anything special for this Samhain?
Answering the original question. ........I would have to agree with most everyone in the thread saying to write your own spell. This would make it more personal and a way of honoring those that have passed on. protect yourself as well with the veil being thin.
keep your peace and give your thoughts to those around you - physically and beyond
There is a more recently posted thread on this topic which is currently open.
Thank you.
