I was always interested in the way "heaven" and "hell" were supposedly ran and how, and also by who.
I did some research along time ago and am posting it here. I would like to get opinions, ideas, or other facts about what you have read or heard.

~Hell--1st Theory~
The First Floor:
Name: Chamber of Tongue Ripping
Function: Those who stir up troubles by gossiping will find their tongues being ripped out.

The Second Floor:
Name: Chamber of Scissors
Function: Those who break the marriage of others will have their fingers cut off.

The Third Floor:
Name: Chamber of Iron Trees
Function: Those who cause discords among family members of other people will find their body being pierced by hooks and hung upside down on iron trees.

The Fourth Floor:
Names: Chamber of Mirror
Functions: Those who escape the earthly punishment will find their true shape being displayed in the mirror, and the old karmic debt will have to be paid with high interest.

The Fifth Floor:
Name: Chamber of Steamer
Function: Instigators and hypocrites will find themselves being steamed in a steamer.

The Sixth Floor:
Name: Forest of Copper Column
Function: Arsonists will get themselves stuck to a scotching hot copper column.

The Seventh Floor:
Name: Mountain of Knifes
Function: Those who kill sentient beings with knife will find themselves climbing a hill of knifes.

The Eighth Floor:
Name: Hill of Ice
Function: Cold-blooded schemers and ungrateful suckers, including those who ill-treat their partners and elders, will find themselves naked in this freezing cold environment.

The Ninth Floor:
Name: Cauldron of Boiling Oil
Function: Sex offenders such as rapists, lechers and adulterers will find themselves being fried in boiling oil.

The above are the upper nine floors belonging to the East Hell. Further down is the West Hell with another nine floors.

The Tenth Floor:
Name: Chamber of Ox
Function: Those who abuse animals will find themselves being bullied by animals.

The Eleventh Floor:
Name: Chamber of Rock
Function: Those who abandon or kill newborns will find themselves being crushed under a rock and soaked in filthy water.

The Twelfth Floor:
Name: Chamber of Pounding
Function: Those who wilfully waste food will find themselves being pounded like crops.

The Thirteenth Floor:
Name: Pool of Blood
Function: Those who do not respect others will find themselves soaked in blood. It is said that those who died of bleeding are actually given a preview of their afterlife.

The Fourteenth Level:
Name: Town of Quitters
Function: Those who commit suicide will find themselves wandering in this town of misery where the wind of sorrow and rain of grief blasting day and night. They are the ones slipping off the normal incarnation paths and will live in the gaps of the worlds for a long, long time.

The Fifteenth Level:
Name: Chamber of Dismemberment
Function: Those who disturb the deceased by digging tombs will find their body being torn into pieces.

The Sixteen Floor:
Name: Mountain of Flames
Function: Those who steal, briber and rob will find themselves surrounded by the lasting inferno.

The Seventeenth Floor:
Name: Yard of Stone Mill
Function: Those who abuse their power and oppress the people will find themselves being ground into powder.

The Eighteenth Floor:
Name: Chamber of Saw
Function: Those who exploit the loopholes in the law to cheat and engage in malpractice in business will find themselves being sawed into half.

~I have more somewhere on my computer. When i can find it I will post it~

I am unsure of how they run but I believe Hell is much like Earth, only very very warm. And if Heavan is the opposite of Hell, Heavan would be cold.

interesting theories though.

The discussion is, do you agree or disagree? have you ever heard anything different? In the book "Dante's Inferno" it speaks of only 7 layers of hell. What have you seen, heard or read about this subject?

What interests me the most about the layers of hell is...There is no direct relation between the crime and the punishment.

Or maybe there is, I just haven't noticed it.

Correcting myself here. I was wrong before, some of them do have direct relations between the crime and the punishment, but the following:

The Third Floor

The Fifth Floor

The Ninth Floor

The Eleventh Floor

The Thirteenth Floor

The Seventeenth Floor

The Eighteenth Floor

Don't seem that way to me. The punishments seem sort of...random.

And sometimes I wonder, is this concept designed to make people who have sufferend by others feel better?

A sort of, "Well they'll suffer in hell for what they did"

Gives people peace of mind? I don't know...something I've wondered.

Oh, Morrigon, you don't see the relations? Let me see if I can clarify these...

The Third Floor:
Name: Chamber of Iron Trees
Function: Those who cause discords among family members of other people will find their body being pierced by hooks and hung upside down on iron trees.

The person who thought this one up believed that the "family tree" was iron. Unfortunately, his was rusty and falling apart due to the fact his son was a lazy good for nothing bum and his daughter was a drug addicted prostitute. He got them both jobs a the meat packing plant in an effort to straighten them out, but their co-workers hated them and hung them on the hooks.

The Fifth Floor:
Name: Chamber of Steamer
Function: Instigators and hypocrites will find themselves being steamed in a steamer.

Well, everyone knows you remove most of the best vitamins and nutrients if you fry or boil your instigators and hypocrites. Steaming them leaves them crisper and tasty.

The Ninth Floor:
Name: Cauldron of Boiling Oil
Function: Sex offenders such as rapists, lechers and adulterers will find themselves being fried in boiling oil.

These people just needed to be sterilized due to their activities and the diseases they got from them. There was no penecilin back then so...

The Eleventh Floor:
Name: Chamber of Rock
Function: Those who abandon or kill newborns will find themselves being crushed under a rock and soaked in filthy water.

It was common back then for people to not bathe but once or twice a year, and they all used the same water. The head of houshold went first, then the children from oldest to youngest. The youngest would have been the new-born, but since the bastard killed it, he gets soaked in the filthy bath water.

Oh, the rock is just to hold him in place until the water is nice and filthy...

The Thirteenth Floor:
Name: Pool of Blood
Function: Those who do not respect others will find themselves soaked in blood. It is said that those who died of bleeding are actually given a preview of their afterlife.

What is less respectful than bleeding all over someone, really?

The Seventeenth Floor:
Name: Yard of Stone Mill
Function: Those who abuse their power and oppress the people will find themselves being ground into powder.

Abuse power, face the power of the stone mill. Easy. Of course, they don't specify if it's a wind-mill or a paddle-wheel mill... I would assume the paddle-wheel - much more powerful.

The Eighteenth Floor:
Name: Chamber of Saw
Function: Those who exploit the loopholes in the law to cheat and engage in malpractice in business will find themselves being sawed into half.

Got me hanging on this one. All I know is, if it's true, Dick Cheney is going to have to split soon...

I don't believe in hell, or if there is one, I don't believe it's literal, just metaphorical. I can honestly say I've never heard of that many layers, though. It's interesting though. Thanks for posting.

I'm trying to find them but I also found it somewhere that it said that the 7 layers of hell are ruled by the 7 deadly sins.
IE Belial being the sin of Pride. He is the ruler of 80 demon legions and is ruler of the northern elements mainly those of the earth.

I'll try and find the rest.

With the exception of a few of those sins wouldn't we all be guilty of multiple things. If that description is correct what would happen to someone that has done a lot of those things. I think that discription is interesting and entertaining to think about but much too specific to be accurate. Who came back to tell us that's how it is?

Well it is interesting. I had heard of the 7 layers. Not this many though. They all sound horrible. I've heard different theories of hell. The ones that creeped me out invovled eternal fire or total darkness and burning from either hot or cold. The layer thing is an interesting way of describing/theorizing hell.

I don't buy into a level of hells theory. All of hell is the same. You are given a personal valet, one to over see each and every one of you desires are tended to at your whim. Your whole day is planned out and runs smoothly, with no snags or changes. Your eternal existence is catered to. No surprises, no challenges, and no room for personal growth because of it.

Think "Dial P for Pip"

thats an interesting way of looking at hell i kinda thought it would be run like a dictatorship with harsh punishments stern rules poor way of living/afterlife??? and they kill you many times in a day just because they feel like it and of course your dead so you feel the death but you have no peace after the pain never gose away so it just adds to your suffering

For those who follow Wicca there is no hell, only lessons here on earth and reincarnation. The All sends us here to earth to perfect our souls through life lessons. Once we have learned what we have been sent here for we go to the Summerlands to review a life lived with the God and Goddess. Once rested, and if needed, we are sent back to learn our next lesson. If we have perfected our souls we are then allowed to dwell with the God and Goddess forever.

Are there 18 levels in hell?

First answer by Kushan. Last edit by Kushan. Contributor trust: 9 [recommend contributor]. Question popularity: 2 [recommend question]

Answer

As per Abhidhamma (3rd Pitaka of Dhamma), there are 08 main hells. There are 16 'mini' Hells surrounding each of these 08 hells. There is a darkness Hell, a river like hell and a tree like Hell!

So, (8x16)+3= 131

The Physical Structure of Inferno
Dante's Hell is shaped like a funnel that extends all the way to the center of the earth. It is situated underneath the city of Jerusalem, which is at the center of the northern hemisphere. Opposite Jerusalem, at the center of the southern hemisphere is the mountain of Purgatory. Lucifer is immobilized at the bottom of Hell, where he fell after the defeat in his rebellion against God.
This funnel is made of nine circles. The first circle is the widest and, progressively, the ninth circle is the smallest. This ninth circle surrounds Lucifer. Each circle is reserved to a different category of sinners:

Ante-Hell: This is a place where the souls of the damned fall at their death. From here they are brought by Charon into Hell through the river Acheron. Some souls, the Neutrals, remain here, because they never chose either good or evil.

Upper Hell: the Incontinent
1st circle: Limbo. Reserved for the souls of the just people who never knew Christ, and those (especially infants) who died without baptism and never committed a sin. Here Dante encounters the ancient philosophers and poets.
2nd circle: The Lustful. Dante talks to Francesca da Rimini, who tells him how she became involved in an adulterous affair with Paolo, her brother in law. Landscape: a violent storm which tosses around the souls. Minos guards this circle.

3rd circle: The Gluttonous. Dante talks to Ciacco, a Florentine, who used to be a parasite, as he was going from people to people, gossiping on everyone. Ciacco gives Dante the first prophecy of his future exile. Landscape: heavy steady rain. Three-headed Cerberus is the guardian.

4th circle: The Avaricious and Prodigals. No relevant character is found here. These souls, mostly clerics, go opposite direction, bumping into each other as they push big rocks. The guardian is Pluto, who makes no sense when he talks.

5th circle: The Wrathful and Sullen. These souls are submerged into the river Styx, which surrounds the city of Dis. The wrathful emerge from the dirty waters while the sullen are completely submerged. Phlegyas will take Dante and Virgil across this river in his boat. Here Dante talks to Filippo Argenti, an old acquaintance for whom he has no pity.

Lower Hell: Violence and Fraud
The city of Dis: High walls with closed doors guarded by devils, helped by the Furies and the Medusa. They try to stop Dante, but a divine messenger forces them to open the door.
6th circle: The Heretics. Dante enters the city and sees a huge cemetery filled with open tombs with fire coming out of them. One of the tombs contains the souls of the Epicureans. Dante talks to Farinata degli Uberti and Cavalcante de' Cavalcanti, father of Guido, the poet, and Dante's friend.

7th circle: The Violent. Introduced by the Minotaur, this circle is divided into three rings:

1) Violent Against their Neighbors (tyrants and murderers). These souls are plunged into a river of boiling blood: the river Phlegethon. They are watched over by the Centaurs.

2) Violent against Themselves (suicides). It is an unnatural forest with leafless trees. These trees are the souls of the suicides. Dante talks to Pier delle Vigne, personal secretary of Frederick II. The trees have no leaves because the Harpies keep plucking them as they sprout. Among the trees Dante sees the souls of the squanderers, chased by bitches.

3) Violent against God and Nature. Blasphemers, Sodomites, etc. Virgil talks to Capaneus, king of ancient Crete, stricken by Zeus's bolt for his rebellion. Then Dante talks to his teacher Brunetto Latini, and later he sees three Florentines, at the edge of the circle.

The river Phlegethon cascades into the eight circle, and there is no path to go down. Dante and Virgil are carried down by a three-nature monster, Geryon.

8th circle: Fraud. It is called Malebolge because it is divided into ten bolge (ditches).

1) Panders and Seducers. These souls are scourged by horned demons. Dante talks to Venedico Caccianemico.

2) Flatterers. These souls are immersed in excrements. Dante talks to Alessio Interminei and the ancient Thais.

3) Simonists. They are set heads down into holes in the rock with flames burning on their feet. Dante talks to Pope Nicholas III, who mistakes him for Boniface VII.

4) Diviners, Astrologers and Magicians. Their heads are turned backwards, so they have to walk backwards. Virgil talks to some ancient people: Amphiaraus, Tiresias, Manto and Eurypylus. Among the modern: Michael Scot,.

5) Barrators. They are plunged into boiling pitch and guarded by ten sneaky demons (Malebranche) led by Malacoda (evil tail). Ciampolo of Navarra (a sinner) succeeds in cheating the demons in a hellish context.

6) Hypocrites. These souls, mostly monks of the Jovial order, walk slowly, clothed in heavy caps of lead. Dante talks to two of them from Bologna.

7) Thieves. These souls keep changing into snakes. Dante recognizes (among others) Vanni Fucci, who predicts the defeat of Dante's party, the Whites, and his exile from the city.

8) Fraudulent Counselors. These souls slide away in the ditch as flames. First Virgil talks to Ulysses, the Homeric hero, then Dante talks to Guido da Montefeltro, a turned saint sneaky character.

9) Sowers of Discord and Schism. These souls are physically torn apart. Dante talks to a few, among them Bertram de Bornio, who holds his severed head like a lamp as he walks along.

10) Falsifiers of metals, persons, coins and words. It is like a huge hospital with people with all kinds of deformities. As in the previous ditch, this too is crowded. Master Adam is the most colorful of them.

9th circle: Treachery. It is divided into four sections. The sinners are in a frozen lake, Cocytus. This circle is surrounded by the Giants. One of them, Antaeus, takes Dante and Virgil and puts them down into the ice.

1) Caina: Traitors to Kin. These are immersed in the ice with head down. Dante talks to Carmiscione de' Pazzi.

2) Antenora: Traitors to Homeland. Dante sees one who keeps biting on another's head. He is Count Ugolino who is gnawing the Archbishop Ruggeri's head. He tells Dante the account of his death.

3) Ptolomea: Traitors to Guests. They are head up in the ice, which is freezing their eyes. Dante talks to Fra Alberigo, who is there while his body is still alive, for having killed his guests as he invited them for dinner.

4) Giudecca: Traitors to Benefactors. These sinners are completely immersed into the ice.

The ice of the 9th circled is kept frozen by Lucifer's six flapping wings. Lucifer has three faces, with three mouths, each chewing on a sinner: Judas is in the middle mouth with his head inside, Brutus and Cassius are in the side mouths, with their heads hanging out.

accordingly to the bible, hell is a prison and will be cast into the lake of fire... anyone who as read the bible knows this... now, this is a small part taken from the book: 'A divine revelation of hell.' de Mary Baxter:

"Chapter 7 (The Belly of Hell)

The next night, they entered hell again. They were at a wide open area and many demons and evil entities could be seen gathered in one area. In this area, one can see many souls in torment and the semi-darkness was often interrupted by sharp screams of pain and regret. Jesus said to Mary “Child, Satan is both the deceiver on earth and the tormenter of souls in hell. Many of the demonic powers seen here also go up on the earth at times to hurt, afflict and deceive.” [27]

In this area, there were cell blocks; these cells were arranged in a circle and seventeen miles high. Jesus told Mary that one day, death and hell will be cast into the Lake of Fire. Hell is a temporary holding place until that day comes."

now, if she saw hell or not i don't know, but accordingly to the bible, hell is a prison, and there are many different types of punishments... the ones that raped will not have the same punishment that the ones that killed... fair judgment...

heaven ^^
nether 'Paul' spoke about the great things that he saw in heaven... but a few prophets gave us some glimpse... the river of pure water of life, the ones who drinks from that river will never die, streets of gold, gates of precious stones, trees of fruits (lots of different types, that we don't have here), colors that we have never seen, and chariots that does not need any kind of animals or fuel to make them move, animals that we have never seen, for ex: horses in fire... literally... mountains, mansions and so on... i believe that it's kind of medieval kingdom... but far more greater... ^^

I think the theory of different levels of hell could be depicted from genocides where people suffered at the hands of tyrants and often died a living death.

Their sleep patterns would often be disturbed particularly in REM sleep, as they dreamed their death in tones of vivid imagery like the levels of Hell you are talking about in this thread.

I Agree on that theory, well, i'm more comfortable with it. I personally would like to die and end up in a "alternate reality" Where all the people with a "darker side" Hang out and whatnot.

One can dream... :(

post-partum outcomes according to lifestyle:

fancy flashy life: laid to rest in a tomb that is constantly being raided.

minimal poverty-like life: disposed of where nobody can find the body.

violent tendancies: grave visited only to be desicrated and for no other reasons.

sex criminal/rapist: victim digs up said criminal and returns the favor.

saint: still die, sorry to say.

demon-spawn: same as above. thats fine because as murderface in a very clever show called metalocalypse says "I'd rather Die than go to Heaven!"

If Hell originally came from Hades I see no reason why there are any levels. If you torture someone they feel pain. The only difference would be for the person doing the torturing. So the Devil has different ways of treating different souls? The Devil is righteous in some ways then. Seems a little on the conflicting side.

I'm not sure if the lore originated from China or Japan but I there was a theory that heaven & hell where the same. Everyone would sit around an enormous table, filled to the brim with the most wondrous & delicious foods. However you have to use chop stick that are six feet long. All the people in heaven were full & happy because they would feed each other. Meanwhile the selfish people in hell were trying to feed themselves & were hungry & miserable.

wow this one raises a lot of questions in my mind. Ive always heard of the different levels of hell but ive never seen a description such as this.

Which anythigns possible, but would one in hell (on any level) have to live this torture over and over? and can you move between levels?

I always thought heaven and hell were a lot like earth only in the sense that there is a ruler (god / the devil / the president ) and there are ppl inhabiting. one is hot, the other is "perfect"

depends how u want to look at it methinks.

Violaquin, that's so great. lol.
I also find it strange that we can picture and describe Hell so easily but find doing the same for Heaven so difficult.

Heaven is ran by God. There you will find Jesus and Mary. Hell is ran by Satan, the fallen Seraphim. This is what I was taught and what I believe. As for the levels of hell, I am not sure. I know of purgatory and thats about it.

I suppose in theory there is really only 7 layers of hell, Each of them standing for one deadly sin. Doesent really make sense that there are more. Hell is a placed to be punnished, so technicly (Excuse spelling) you can only be punnished for breaking the 7 deadlyest.

I say torture and pain is just that.. torture and pain.. why have a structure to it.... I'd lump it all into one.

Personally, I believe someone who steals is on the same low level as a rapist so both deserve as much pain as possible. *shrugs* no levels needed.. one would get the job done just fine.

I can't remember where I saw it at, but a man was recounting how he died and went to hell, he died in a hospital and was outside his body watching his loved ones cry and weep around him, an orderly came and told him to follow. As they walked down what seemed to be an endless corridor, more orderlies came to accompany him and as they walked they started to look more and more grosteque and disfigured until they attacked him and started ripping him apart. He said that over his screams, he heard the screams of thousands of other people. I don't know what sin the guy commited but it must of been pretty bad.

I think that structure of hell is too....man made. The way humans see justice is "an eye for an eye".
I dont think hell is made of up of different levels, or that each punishment is befitting of the crime.
It just seems well written, and too clean cut. A place built and created for the damnnation of evil souls wouldnt concentrate on certain groupings for them. Each indivdual soul would be placed into it's own personal hell...
and what happens if one being is guilty of committing more then one "Sin"?
