...around 7:15, cell phone rings.
"Can you or one of your techs do two installs tomorrow?"
"I'm tied up all day with an event, my tech will have to find a baby sitter. School ended today, his kids' summer camp starts Monday."
"Ok. But these really need to get done, can you check with him?"
"I will call him and ask."
"Ok, thanks! And let me know right away because I have to get this confirmed by 8PM."
*face palm*
At 7:30PM, cell phone rings.
"Umm... our night shift guy just called and said the server and the phones are down. Probably because of the storm that just passed through - power went out."
"Well, everything is on UPS's so they should shut down automatically - they just need to be repowered."
"Oh, ok. I don't know if he knows how to do that."
"Well, I can swing out and do it, I'm 5 minutes away."
"No, I don't think he's there anymore. Without anything working I think he sent everyone home and locked up."
"Wow, really? How long was it down for?"
"About an hour before he called me...."
*face palm*
.....
...after my one hour meet-&-greet which turned into three hours of unofficial training, the contracting agency called me and said the end user is exited at the prospects of having me take this position over and personally I'm making him look good, so he's loving it.
Good to know.
However I still don't have the job secured and it's a matter of approvals being put in place and signed off on...
...and when they called me last Wedensday, they said this was urgent. *ahem* Big businesses....
COMMENTS
"urgent" to me means "we need to get this done within 2 weeks... probably..."
Urgent means.. "We need to rush you to get all of your stuff done so we can drag ass and not worry about the deadline."
He is "exited" at the prospect? Were you so good you blew him out the door, or what?
*giggling*
I love you man....
...and I'm not handling either of them!
First, Morri is assembling a new website for me, so I can show off my photos in a real gallery and do some minor blogging about life in general.
Her ideas she has shown me so far are incredible. I'm all tingly with excitement!
The other one is going to be a local blog site where folks from this area can register for a free email address. Fun stuff! Our intern is working on that one - I figured it would be a good project for a first time website for her.
...no travelling for this job. Not the one I had to pee in a cup for today. This one is local. Niagara Falls and Rochester are the furthest I'd have to go.
The other travel job is something different. It's network analysis stuff for a large, multinational company.
All expenses paid trips to many places in the USA you might never get to see otherwise... I wish I could do it...
...just had to go pee in a cup to provide for the drug test this new contract requires. Always a good time.

This means you have the job...able to travel to do the job? :) Right? Yeah!!
That's probably the main thing I envy about you guys...peeing into small cups. I would hope they gave the women a larger recepticle.
If you eat a lot of sesame seed bagels, the test could come back showing positive for marijuana...just sayin'.
Ut oh.. I know about poppie seeds showing positive for opium, but I didn't realize sesame seeds can do that...
...I cook with sesame seeds... all... the... time...
You would have to eat an entire 12z jar of poppy seeds for it to show up positive for drugs....
......um just take my word for it ok.
Is that 12oz or some other measurement?
120oz?
12 zicrons?
Damn indistinguishable typographical errors...
...anyone out there with experience in data networking and tip & ring (phone services) that loves to travel... all the time? I have an opportunity for you...
...have to have your own data/com tools and a clean driving record (preferably over 25 since auto rental is necessary).
I'd love to do this myself... if this opportunity came up 3 days ago I would have jumped at it... as of now I have committments that are going to keep me planted here in the Niagara Region...
...I just completed, what appears to be a very successful interview with one of the largest government prime contractors for IT services.
This is for a pretty basic, contract position doing some pretty basic low-level stuff... but, like everything, it's a foot in the door with a company I've been trying to contract with for many years.
It's local, for one of their local clients... We'll see where it goes.

*cross fingers* :)
OOOh - I hope that you get it!
count my toes in
...the day started with a bang. My tech was over an hour late... so I went down to the workbench to check on a customer's system that was finishing updates, when my sales exec. said, "I killed it."
I asked, "What did you kill?"
"My laptop."
"How did you do that?"
"I went to reach for my stapler and knocked my coffee over it. Now it won't start... see?"
He tells me this as he is pressing the power button and the indicator lights are lighting up then turning off.
Ok, laptop accidents 101 time - if you spill something on your laptop, immediately turn it off, unplug it and pull the battery. The less electricity running through it, the more likely you are to save it. Just saying.
So I take the laptop and start disassembling it. I did what I could to clean out the keyboard (all that cream and sugar makes for a sticky spill) and cleaned out whatever liquids I could find above the board.
Fortunately we gave him a ThinkPad R-Series, which is built to channel liquids away from the mainboard.
So after letting it sit and dry out all day, I just reassembled it, turned it on... and... yippie-skippy, it works.
They are well built, durable laptops, for sure.
The day didn't turn out as bad as I thought it might... heh.
..my company was just named business of the month by a local organization that promotes technology development in this region. So in about 2 hours I have to do a video interview with the chair of that organization.
Morri and I are also meeting with a young entrepreneur who we are looking to make a little business partnership with - both to help us and get him off the ground as he finished college this summer.
I'm considering making burgers for everyone for lunch today... not sure if I want to or if I just want to spring for some pizza & wings...

I read that article, along with the companion piece, "Things you shold NEVER buy used"
I agree, the title could have been a little less cut and dried, but I agree with alot of his points, some things are just as good used as new, and it is a form or recycling. But I always wonder just how that figures into say the musicians getting their share that they are SO fond of getting. Wouldn't it be the same as buying a cd and then sharing it on a p2p site?
