I dont know how many of you believe in immortality; if there is any way of achieving it and why a certain creature would be chosen... however, if given the option of mortal life and immortality, would you take it, or prefer to have a normal life-span and live for today?

I'd like to hear your answers before I answer the question myself.

I'd enjoy it up until the point I realized that I would never die.

Don't laugh, think about. The human life is only significant because it is finite and relatively short. If I was immortal I would never have the energy to do things because I could literally put them off forever. After the initial novelty wore off it would become quite boring and depressing. Especially if no one else was imortal in the world and every 100 years everyone you ever knew was dead. It would be very depressing to follow this cycle forever. I would choose not to become immortal.

It may be interesting to be able to 'start again' every century, but it would be difficult to be constantly in the knowledge that you would see everyone you knew dying. what if you had children?(considering this on the basis of them not being immortal.)

Well if I were immortal and knew that my children would not become immortal I'm not even sure if I would want to father a child. I would find it extremely hard to focus on raising a child who's existance would barely be a speck in my memory after a while. It would also be hard to marry and commit to a marriage when you knew that it would barely be memorable in a couple hundred years. It would always be floating in the back of my mind how insignificat everything happening now is because I will outlive it all by so much.

You see, thats what I think. The sheer amount of time a person would exist would in turn make major events in the perspective of a mortla life seem insignificant. However you couldalso approach this as an advantage; think of how many great moments and experiences you could have, and all thepeople you could meet...

i would choose the life of immortality if and only if i could still meet God. watching everyone around me eventually die, i don't believe that would bother me after a point, eventually i think i would become numbed to it. as for the kid thing, i that would probably be the same thing, yeah i am a-sexual but you never know how you might be different in like 500 years or so.

it is kind of hard to commit to this though, i mean this is a bigger commitment than marriage, i guess this is just how i feel right now

I like your point dear. You wouldprobably become less effected, but I (as I mortal I guess) cannot percieve the concept of being totally immune to the idea of those around me being guaranteed to die infront of me.

the option... if the option was there... i might take it... to be able to live and keep on living... think of the things you could learn, or become experts in EVERY field...

it's a prospect i'd consider. But the major downfall is that things won't last as long as you. you're favourite guitar will eventually crumble. your love ones would die around you.

I think if i chose immortality, i would probably live my life alone after everyone else died. that's if i didn't take my own life... assuming i can

I think I would choose to be immortal, to be able to see things become history. I have a few friends now, but I think I spending life alone once they pass wouldn't get to me until after the first few millenia.

the way I see things right now that we are immortal. I feel that when this "shell" or "body" dies our "soul" goes on living we just become or inhabit a new body through birth again. And when you have djavo this is what it is.. You really did the same thing in a past time.. This is how I veiw things right now....

I have thought about this question alot. I myself would have to choose immortality. I do not fear death but would rather live for the future. I am courious as to see what the different times in life holds. I could stage my death ever so often. Which would be fun. People dying around you would get depressing I agree. I know I would move around alot. See everything. It would be very interesting indeed.

I would take immortality over a mortal existance anytime, just so i could see how the world changes through the years. I would be able to learn and do the things that can not be done in a mortal life. So immortality is the chose of me.

I am sure I would find myself writing many many journals to remember my life. Within time certain things will leave your memory. Just like with a sponge.. after it gets the maxium amount of water in it ... some starts to slowly leak out. ( if you dont sumerdge it water) But if you think... if the time we are born to the time we pass... our brains cannot hold all the information that we have gained over the 60-70-80-90- years that we are here. The process would just repeat itself as it does now.

lets say that you around for about 400 years and the laugages change in those times.. would you rewrite all the journals in every laungage so that if anyone during those times or say if you do pass over for whatever reason that what you have learned would be kept true to what you learned and not a "remake" of what you had wrote.. For example the bible *hides for bringing this in* but many think the bible was not translated right.. How would you keep this from happing to your own works??

Everyone has really important points, and thankyou for taking the time to consider the quesiton in depth. But I do have more questions;

WhiteFlameVamp-
I like what you are saying about religion, and this makes me wonder if all people have a different definition of immortality in regards to personal beliefs. How immortal are we already if we are to consider things such as re-incarnation?

CountessMoon-
Is it not a slight fear of death which makes us live out our own lives, rather than giving responsibility to time being against us?

Gorey-
Yes, you would be famous. That is if you chose to tell people you where immortal, or would you not hide it and float through geerations remembered by millions but as simply a part fo their time?

Another thing i have been thinking; what would the consequences of evolution overtaking us result in?

I think life without death keeps you from appreciating life. How could you really see the beauty in the world if you knew that you would wake up the next day and be able to see it all again? I don't know immortality might be nice but I would perfer to just live a little longer than natural maybe. I think there are other ways to be immortal, like creating art or music, feeding yourself into something you love. People will see it and remember you and you'll be immortal in some way like that. I dont know, I'm babbling.

I really like your post. In SHakespeares sonnets he questions immortality by suugesting that in Shakespeares verse, and by having children, a person will never die ('die single and thine image dies with thee')

Maybe a slightly expanded life span would allow us to leave more of a memory rather than strictly sticking to immortality here. If a memory is what you want...

i if giving the choice would have a mortal life but have my name live on. That way no matter what happened to me generations would pick up a book and learn about me so in turn i would never die for my achivements would live on forever. living an immortal life would be a life in the shadows to prevent yourself and others from getting hurt. although i am attracted to an immortal life and i would love it but there would be a point in your life when everything seems so dead and black because you can do everything and you have forever to do it so there is no drive to do it. and the fact that i am an extreme attention freek and i dont know ifi could do that as an immortal.
and im kinda tired so if none of this makes sense im sorry.hehehe

I believe firmly that life is too short. I think many people who have lived in the past, would of loved to be able to live in this day and age and vice versa. Would'nt you like to see life on other planets? How the world will evolve and how it will end? I would love to become immortal and be able to experience the future,. I want to travel in teleportation machinces and live on other plantes..meet other 'alien' races thats never gonna happen for many ceunturies..
Also i want to know what this site is going to be like in a 100 years.. i'd pay good money to see that! Awesome!! MmhmMm V-----V

Also, at the end of the day it's next to impossible to give a human account of this.. we can only truly think in the short term (life term) thats what we are programmed to do.. We need a true immortal to settle this... *looks around*

If i was ever given the option of being immortal, i would not take it at all, mainly because i dont want to have to live, and eventually see the people destroy each other and themselves, and over time, see the world destroyed.. I would rather die knowing i was someplace peaceful, then in a world that will evolve into a Realm of Chaos.. i would rather be with family..

And thats another reason why i dont wish to be immortal.. i dont want to outlive my sister, my wife, my kids.. yanno?

first off labyrinthine the mind is a very powerful thing. If you set your mind to believe and want is so much you can do it. For some it's a bit harder for they don't know how they feel deep inside they feel there soul is still lost.. and onto immortality.. I feel that we contuine to live even when this body is gone. You may not ever remember things that has happened to you.. I remember my mom telling me one time that I was wide awake and walked into the living room where she was and she asked me what I was doing I replied you killed me, you stabbed me to death why did you do this to me I was just a little boy. She of course freaked out. I don't personally remember it. But have you ever knoticed that some things just come so damn easy. Its like you have done it before. For I think we retain a little about our other lives. but the most part of is not giving to us.. Think of what some people would do if they knew they were immortal. Some would do good things and others would keep hidden from others.. However you have the ones that you don't want to live forever.. Now the question is would you do good with being immortal or live like you were "God" and do what you want to whom you want when you want???

Live longer than others.. Hm.. Would like that I guess, as long as the one you really love also lifes about as long.. If you life forever you see everybody die, everyone you love.. The problem then is that you can't die, so you have to live forever with a lot of pain. No thanks :)

Really interesting responses, some of which I'd like to bring up;

DarkLight-
I would agree that by nature we both create and destroy. This is what I have been considering along with immortality. How much of the world is there left to see before we destroy it, or somehting else does. I suppose that comes back to if you believe in a God looking over us which I personally do not entertain.

Dhampir-
I agree with your point, of witnessing technological and perhaps spiritual advances that we would not otherwise be blessed with seeing, and perhaps in destroying this planet, we could enjoy life on another.

Labyrinthine-
It IS important how your own mentality dictates how you live your life, in regards to frame of mind. Would that not be effected by a knowledge of how long you had to live. Would you not, if you where aware of your immortality, allow yourself more time for melancholy?

WhiteFlameVamp-
That was a very interesting story about your mother. So, are you looking at immortality on the basis of the 'soul' passing through different bodies eternally, rather than just a life as one person?

Sunshine-
Simply... what would you do with it? (oh and I hope you aren't too hungover lol.)

BoBo-
You would also live with a lot of love, and perhaps adventure...

Deathnitegrl-
Its interesting how you used the word 'quest' would you percieve the gift of immortality as a quest to do good/evil in return for the oppertunity to live forever?

Im sorry the reply is go disjointed, but everyone has so many contrasting yet strong points, and considering you took the time to answer the question, I wanted to reply to you all.

Yes Echo as of now that is how I see we live forever. Along with what others say about living themselves behind like art, books, children and such. I do think it would be amazining to see things a bit longer than the human life span. But if I was to have the chance to be immortal right now in this life in this body I don't think I would. I would be afaraid of myself. I do have a lot of pint up anger and possably do harm to those whom don't derive it. Besides I wouldn't want this body that I am in right now. I would want one that I know that could stand alot of years on it. Granted right now I don't look my age. Which I'm not sure it good or bad. However I do think that seeing things so great like a musician comming into this world and watch his or her creataion change the world. There are a great many things good to be immortal but with that also comes the bad.

Again I ask with being immortal would you do good for human kind or help them destroy themselves and others?

I'll answer what I feel after some of you have posted..

~Vamp~

i wouldn't do either persay, i just want to live my life in a quite center alone save for a few people ( includes you guys :) )

i go back to a point i was thinking of and Dhampir said

this question cannot be truely answered untill one has experienced such a thing for a while

things change at extremes, when a jet hits mach speed a cloud forms around it, you can make water very cold but at a certain point of 0 degrees cel, it turns to ice

i mean who truly knows what would happen to the human mind if it lingered gor a few hundred years, a few thousand.

I do agree that time is against us. TIme is very short. It does make people live and
grow. Lets say for example ... if someone told a person they had 6 months to live. What is going to drive them? The fear of death. The fear of not being able to fullfill what they have wanted to in this life. They will try to fill that void that they have left with things they really want to do before the end comes. They are going to let death give them that boost to do the things that they have wanted.

Now from a Vampire point.

To be immortal. To never die. We all know this. BUT with time. You have to start over. Time will come to an end with a certain life persay. You will have to change names, location, and fit in with the new life. Each time we have to "die" or "start over" We would be giving in responsiblity to time being against us. TO moving on and starting a new. Which if you think would basically be like rebirth or moving to a new life from a past life..

I think I answered it .. if not let me know and I will think of more to ramble about lol

As to the question of " translating every journal because of new languages" which I think was brought forth by WhiteFlame...

As time goes on... you can study the old language. Keeping it fresh in your mind so you dont forget what you know. Same way with things now. We tend to forget small details.. and remember the large important ones ( languages, speech, fond memories.. etc) Which would be stored into out long term memory. Which then would help to remember the language it was wrote in.

Countess
The way I was refering to that not as if you were the immortal one reading the book. But that a "human" a few hundred centries later was reading it. sure there will always be studies of old laugange but would you under this new "identity" right the same thing but update it a little and make it so the people of that time could read it?

I understand now.. Yes you could but you would also have to be careful. Not knowing as to what people would still think of vampires or embrace them to thier life there might be the threat of bring harmed or possibly distroyed. Even ran out of the town. I think that would have to be a personal belief if you wanted to rewrite it so a human could read it. If they got out.

I think it would also depend on what it is that you were writing.. If it was a journal of what you seen over the time or if it was about your life and what you did such as intreveiw with the vampire. I was refering to it as if it was a journal of what you have seen. Like a new world being born.

I too know that our *bodies* are shells, my mother taught me that at a very young age by saying we simply couldn't accomplish all we needed to in 1 lifetime and so our souls are reincarnated, no human body can achieve immortality but souls are a different matter, regardless I would not choose to change what I am now no matter how you or I define that.

yes I meant poll, sorry ... and I did it because shortly after I started a thread similar to this had been talked about .. and even though polls don't allow you to go in to depth as to why you choose y'r option, it's cool to see exactly how many people actually think the same or different

I personally would rather live the best life I could and die young. I dont want to watch all my loved ones die over and over again. I also dont want to be old and living off machines. I live now and I live it up. Life is to short no matter how long you live. I would decline immortality and hope that i die young!

I would give anything for something like extended longetivity..love or hate me but I hate ageing :/ (I'm growing up way too fast for my tastes) anyhow that would also leave me the option to die when I only wish in case I get bored....imagine if one owuld have to surpass humanity and would be left stranded alone on earth hehe...

I have pondered this quandary many times in the past, due to the idea brought through anime (namely dragon ball z and scorcer hunters) The thought has led me through a hellish train of thought, on one had, I would miss dearly all that I have now and then it would become nothing more than a spec in my memory, on the other hand, I could enjoy life to its fullest, and create new sporst in which only I could truely enjoy without dying.

Over all, I have come to the conclusion that one life is enough to live, and there is no reason to live longer. We were placed here for a set amount of time, and disrupting that time might break that of all existance.

As the Norse god of mischief, also known as "the boundry breaker" or "the oundries" themselves, I say live the one life you have to the fullest, and dont wish it to be longer. Don't cheat death, and dont tempt fate, just live the one time that you can.

WhiteFlameVamp-
I like your point about pent up anger. This could be alleviated through spiritual immortality by events becoming less important in the grand scheme of things. In answer to your question, I think I would want to do good, both for myself and others, as I would see it as more of a gift than a curse (or at least I think I would, nothing is ever certain.)

DeathIsBecoming-
I think you and Dhampir have a point. As I said, to WhiteFlameVamp, nothing is ever certain, and you never know how something would truly make you feel until it has happened.

I’llNeverTell- Luckily it is a decision that we will not have to make... or at least I think it is! ;-)

Lenoresprettycorpse-
you said ‘and you never change yourself’ I don’t agree. I think CountessMoon has a good perspective when she mentioned reincarnation within immortality.

CountessMoon- I think that’s a fantastic point, as time moves, we would have to start again, and in turn re-new ourselves, so we would grow and change.

Stragella- I really like your ideology on reincarnation. I don’t know whether I believe it or not, its something I often ponder ;-)

HellChildDami-
Thanks chicken ;-) Ive just become a spectre so polls here we come. Yeah you get a much wider response, as some people wouldn’t be bothered to read all of this!

MrLaven-
There is something quite enchanting about dying in youth, rather than waiting for old age to creep over you, isn’t there.

Yendor- good point, what if you where left alone after humanity had dyed out, what would you do then?

Moreish and aperiritionnight- LMAO Moreish! Im seeing a common belief in the immortal soul here, I don’t know if I believe in this myself but it’s a totally different kettle of fish

This was a very good topic! I was driving around thinking about it. Living everday life as mortal... and then somethings just hit me as to what if you were immortal ... how would this change? would you do this differently? It really makes you think as to how your every day routine would change.

wait i have a fairly decent clarifying question that i think people have asked more than once but i don't think has really been answered as of yet

are we talking about being immortal as in you can chop off my head stake me in the heart with a silver cross and set me on fire then drop a nuke on me and then i just regenerate brand spankin' new like nothing happened, i.e i literaly can never die

or are we talking about the immortal like like the mythological vampire were you live forever untill someone kills you or you kill yourself

because i have seen many people thinking it is cannot be even killed and many saying they would if they could die

personaly i wouldn't take immortality if i could never ever die because of i think it was yendor's point of the human race being destroyed and you being left alone; well unless of course others took this choice of this kind of immortality, i mean why should it have been only you being able to have a chance at immortality and not several others

if it is immortality as in i can die kinda like the mythos vampire than i say yes because if things go far too sour like human race gone and i am all alone then i could atleast kill myself and have an escape route

peace be with you all

I have always dreamed of the feeling of immortality. What it is like to feel stronger than everyone, live longer than everyone, and be better than everyone.

Immortality isnt something you can choose easily though....I mean you see everyone around you die....your friends...family...and there is no one there to comfort you...to tell you that it is ok because it isnt....you will see that you made a bad decision and would be too late to change it

you would be forever stuck in darkness....

but everyones immortality is different...some ppl love it and some dont

it depends on one decision...thats all

Well, im chuffed that the thread carried on ;-)

WhiteFlameVamp-
Thanks dear x

Daermon-
I think you’ve probably summed up a really big thread in a sentence ;-)

CountessMoon-
Well I think Id throw caution to the wind a bit more (although I’m stupid enough as it is, so I don’t think immortality is the best option for me ;-)) why, how do you think you would change?

Thera-
But that’s the point that WhiteFlameVamp was making, you would have to live so many lives as time passed that you may not be subject to the same old routine, but I understand your point.

MannyBeBop-
I suppose belief makes us differ on opinion. I don’t believe in an afterlife so I believe living for the now as there is nothing after it.

DeathIsBecoming- My dear, that’s exactly what I wanted to bring up too ;-) would immortality mean you COULDN’T die, or more importantly, would you be able to kill yourself if you decided you no longer wanted to be immortal?

SUshiSan- I don’t know if I agree with how people aren’t supposed to see the future past a natural lifespan, but that depends on whether you are an advocate of free will or if you believe in determinism.
