I was reading a post that I made and thought this would be a good topic to discuss. Science and the unknown, the eternal battle of one trying to out prove the other. Fact vs. Fiction or beliefs.
So my question to you……
Is everything that can be proven by science is fact and everything that can not be proven fiction. Or is it just that is has not been proven yet?
What’s your opinion we’d like to know.
I believe that only because a fact is not proven it can't be neccessary a fiction.
For example I believe in paranormal and ghosts because I've had my expiriences. Also I don't ignore the possibility of re-incarnation cause of my dreams.I also believe in other dimentions cause I believe that when I did ouija boards I believe spirits were in another dimention. Then there are some who believe in aliens well never had such expiriences but I don't ignore the possibilty they exist either.
i think that science can only progress as far as human understanding, as there understanding grows so will science, with that in mind i think that science still has a long way to go with proving things.
i don`t believe it is fiction just `cos it has not yet been proven...there is just too many things in live that will never be explained to us, and they are what they are, it is our problem if we don`t understand them...
In a sense, the difference between fact and fiction is merely perception. Nothing can truly be proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. For instance, could anyone really prove that everything we know isn't fiction, such as the Matrix? That everything we know is merely a meticulously shrouded facade.
It really comes down to faith. What we choose to believe is true.
And I believe that it's way too early in the morning to be trying to think coherently.
i believe we shoud think for our self... i believe in lots of things thas sience would never confirm. so there is lots of books about this subject. One even say that this is all made up by sistem... so there we go..
yes exactly, who for example can say that books are 100% true?
Hmmmmm..... theories are amazing sometimes....waiting for the scientific community to prove or disprove them is difficult. Just because something hasn't been proved by science yet...doesn't mean it's not real. It just means our feable minds haven't yet grasped everything they need to.
* rolls eyes *
Science is not like that at allthe best you can do is come up with a theory and make predictions from that theory. Your theory will be used so long as your predictions are good, and when your predictions are no longer good, your theory is tossed aside.
There is not such thing as fact and fiction.
What I find really hard to get my mind around is the idea that by the simple act of looking at something I have changed that something into something else. That kinda freaks me out.
hmm..
I dont think that it's the business of science to prove things to be fiction...just to prove them to be fact.
..or at least to show that they cannot yet be disproven and that all evidence to date, shows them to be fact.
scientists certainly dont consider all things-not yet proven-to be fiction...but instead to be...not yet proven. the most exciting part of the whole thing is to find evidence that indicates something that was previously though to be non-existant or impossible...
i believe what i want and feel comfortable with ppl explore what and where they want as for scientists they only let out what they find after disclosing all to the government bodies first and they say what they can and cant put out to society and one fact or fiction i think anyone and everyone can relate with ummmm AREA 51 people say they were there saw it government says no who do you believe scientists and government are ppl like you and me and those that claimed to have seen hmm fact or fiction .cause regular folk dont have degrees and certificates what they are crazy we dont believe them (thats more to society than us here)
damn, not all scientists are government scientists. talking in very non-specific terms here..since we're not discussing a particular issue..
sure, a lot have goverment funding in some form because..that's where the money for that kinda thing is...but believe it or not, being partially government funded doesn't give the government the right to suppress all unpopular data.
the government may have the power to keep the results that it doesn't like out of the eye of the mainstream media..but the information isn't buried.
Science is a tangible research, trial and error process.. Fiction is a thought..
This is a ongoing trouble... Science can prove some things, with the rest filled with logical guess'... The unknown (or non-scientific) has many things it can prove, with the rest filled with logical guess'... get the drift?.. The words Science and the unknown are nothing... The truth lies in what the individual believes... Look at religions... Vampire, Wiccan, Christian, Jewish, Buddis, Athiest, ect... They all are based on what the people believe... I, myself, am a Christian AND a vampire... They are what I believe make me whole... No one can prove either exists, yet no one can prove either false... They are what I BELIEVE them to be... Faith is the only truth...
We have a drive to grasp the way the world works: in most of us that drive dies when the limits of our education is reached; in a few, very few, that drive is without bounds, reaching into the unexplained, the paranormal, the fiction. Deathnitegirl is one of the few who's boundless (I love reading her answers and even when she disagrees with me she is agreeable). And this time we don't agree.
Scientists can be arrogant, but science is humble. Physics says that the cosmos now revolves around us, and our actions and thoughts really make a difference. That's where witches come in, with all their jawin' and crackin', making nature behave unnaturallywitches are arrogant, not science.
weither it is fact or fiction doesnt matter what matters are the things we choose to belive in bringing them into existance
"we live in an age of science in which no one understands science"
a quote I don't know who from but it seems relevant. A lot of people who have problems with science tend to get confused with psudo-science, proto-science and science.
psudo-science is clap trap wreathed in some of the clothes of the scientific method to try and make something invalid valid by association (like I'm a good guy cause my friend is a good guy)
Proto-science is science we aren't adavnced enough to accomplish yet like massive particle accelerators that havn't been built yet to help us get to the universal feild therory.
Science is research done according to the scientific method and placed up for peer reveiw to authenticate the findings in as unbiased way as possible (actually the truth of it is that one camp of belivers in one therory try to disprove the others camp till the best theory survives in a form of nuerological-darwinisim)
ok now to the meat of it all
science proves squat.....
science meerly removes little clumps of ignorance of the facts over time..... facts by definition are the truth and hence cannot be made or manufactured... only revealed or discovered cause they were always there to begin with. Now the side effect of this is that people can belive a non truth is a fact easly enough, or a fact can be misinterpreted and an incorrect assumption would be drawn from the well of knowlege. But that flaw isn't in the system we've designed to help us understand, but in that there is so much to understand.
There are very many things that aren't going to have a reason for being, but human nature is to try their whole lives to find the answers, and when they realize there are none, it's to late to live with that fact...
I believe in ghosts. but people say I'm crazy for saying they exsist... but either way humanity is either going to prove me crazy, or prove they're there...
believing that reality is only what is revealed by science is like standing in a cave with a candle and believing that the cave is only what is revealed by the candle light!
zlee you just described the copenhagen interpretation with that candle thingy....
I've always thought that Schrodinger's cat was just an unusually more difficult way of relating the question "If I tree falls in the forest, and there is noone around to hear it, does it make any noise?"
ah but jason we can prove it makes noise we can't tell if the cat is alive or dead......
it's more complicated cause one could monitor the tree constantly and expect it not to change because of the observation.... unlike a subatomic particle that will be changed by monitioring......
it would be like this with a sub atomic tree.....
I expect to hear no sound so when the tree falls there is none.....
I expect to hear sound so when the tree falls there is sound......
so it's more complicated cause you can't remove yourself or your expectations from the equation
Your intelligent enough to know that the question is in a lot of ways to do with safety.
People feel safe in the fact that the monster under the bed isnt real just because they have never seen it, and that there isnt any other intelligent life out there, because thats what people tell them... however, many people like to think that angels exist, although there isnt much proof.
Fact can so often be mixed with opinion and well educated guesses that its scary... and when we realise how little we know, we like to ascociate the unknown with fear and 'badness' in order to give ourselves more structure.
Before we go digging to deep we really need to make sure that we are all ready for it, and lets face it... were not all going to be ready at the same time.
everything blieved to be fact my science is not proven for example it is thought to be so that graviton subatomic particals exist and is responsible for gravity but noone has yet discovered them and, they are accepted to exist. We must not forget that it was thought the sun revolved around the earth and that the earth was in the center. Science is troublesome that way. there is alot of egos and people that don't like to be proven wrong. what is proven is so when the time is actually taken to prove it as a fact and just because it hasn't been proven don't make it fiction
apart from the few scientists who are personally and professionally invested in it..
most of the scientific community actually gets quite jazzed at the idea of finding evidence contrary to a popular theory.
This is a very interesting subject, good question
i think the scientists hypothesize to get facts, to get reality. the unproven things they just throw out not being aware that maybe those are real and factual too
im seriously pondering and bedazzled on this question
I don't think anyone will ever know everything. The universe is just far too vast to even comprehend. I like to view science as a tool for exploring the unknown. I suppose if you can prove something it makes it fact. But even after viewing the facts we should keep our minds open to all the possibilities.
People once believed you could fall off the edge of the world, that it was flat, that the sun was something that happily danced around the sun....
It's all about process and experimentation...most things unknown eventually are found to be truthful in some way....
Oh the humanity!
Pardon moi...."the sun happily danced around the earth"...Mon dieu...
