Not sure if I can make a thread like this but.....as many people know,you can not post copyrighted material on your portfolio.You can post your own work,such as artwork,photos of you,family,friends,pets,etc...but not pictures from quizzes,others artwork or photos..

Some people don't seem to understand it...

I don't think that the people who place copyrighted work on their portfolios really care whether they should or not.

Here's a question.. is that true for profiles too? Because there's tons of stuff like that running around..

or is that just a portfolio rule.. which makes sense, cause your portfolio isn't called your scrap book... it's supposed to be things you've taken pictures of, or the model of, or artworks you've designed and created in one way or another.. :-)

it's fine to have work that has copyrights on it to have on your profile, but not on your portfolio.

the big guns here will take your page down if you have images that are not yours up.

there are a few of us that do warnings for you.

I was wondering about something that struck me as kind of a "gray area" regarding that: Ok, so no copyrighted pictures. I got that. What about artwork I drew of characters that are copyrighted? For example, I have a drawing that I did of Mileena and Kitana from the Mortal Kombat video game. Can I put that in my portfolio?

If you created it it can go in your portfolio. If however you take it from a website it cannot go in your portfolio.

A portfolio is meant to be a showcase of your own works, not the works of others.

I've noticed mant portfolios are full with pictures they found on the internet of celeb's, cartoon characters and the such.

yeah..thats why I posted this thread because alot of new ppl seem to load their portfolio with copyrighted work.Then when you say something...they tell you off

Well as the Porfolio Nazi pointed out to me the rules are right there when you open a portfolio...
Someone needs to start going through again and deleting I rather think.

I don't think it is right when i am told that possable some of my personal art work that i made are part copyrighted material and my be deleted when i have seen numours of those that carry the quizes so just to save my portfilio i do not post anything in question and this is a good thread and i dont think just because your doing your job your a nazi people should read the rules first .........

i think most people just dont read FAQ or the instructions when you upload pics in your portfolio

This is just a suggestion....I've rated the entire rave and while going through some portfolios I did see loads of copied crap.

Good thread. I wonder why it's so hard to put the name of the photographer below the pictures. Even me, the proverbial nob with computers found the function to do that. The rules are simple to read, and damn it, I'm portuguese...

Because I fear that most have forgotten how to read in this multimedia overwhelmed world.....

i agree i think they just dont care or they havent really read the rules to the site and do it i think there should be some thikn that reminds them that if it there u know like a message system that sends the rules to the user that breacks them and gives them some kind of punishment

I personally remove at least 5 bad portfolios a day. I send a further 5 messages informing people that their portfolio needs to be sorted out and i get very little help from the general populace of this site who instead of telling the person their portfolio is wrong leave messages along the lines of:

Daire...I try to help when I see the portfolio has copyrighted pics

There he is ...
Come on Daire we love ya ...
If you really want help say the word I get bored and never rate copyright violations above a three....

I admit - I stand guilty - as a couple of the items in my portfolio reflect my taste and style as opposed to being my work. I'll clean the damn thing out.

The problem is the fact that NOBODY reads the FAQ, and hardly anyboy cares until they get their portfolio deleted.

I don't think it's fair to say no one reads the FAQ... I read them, and re-read them and read them again...

it's one of the things I do when I'm bored.. :-)

As for the copyrighted material, people who post other people's work on their portfolio perhaps don't know what a portfolio is.. so here it is:

Though the journal is used for writing here.. not the portfoilio

its okay... everybody just needs to understand the rules. i mean why would you join a site and spend all your time here without knowing what your limits are? unless that was the whole point of joining.. to push the limit. if that is your thing you know the consequences. as far as the newer members, take a moment and look through the site, read the faqs and the rules.

It may save you a legal issue or a deletion.

I agree that everyone should read the rules before they add pictures to their portfolios.. and if they still do not understand what it says.. then they should ask the acolytes, as that is what they are here for.. to help .

yes I agree, nothing other than your own works should be posted in your portfolio.....Hence the reason I just updated mine! lol. I never received a warning from anyone about some of the pictures that I put in my portfolio so I figured it was ok to leave it there. But, I just totally took any pics that weren't mine out of there just to make sure it was all good :)

I have seen nudity pictures too. Not that i really care but they're here, some stuff i normaly wouldnt see here. I wont say names but they know who they are.

Does that mean that the portfolios will no longer have the quizzes in them? I think everyone should have read the FAQ section on here. On any site I go to, if there is one I read it first.

the quizzes can go in the description box...but not in the other box

Bah the quizes suck put them in your journal is my thinking. They just waste the bandwidth and makes it take even longer to load in my opinion.

I made the mistake of putting a couple in the wrong place by mistake and was let known in short order. I fixed it right away-meant to put them in my profile..oops! lol I sure learned quickly....

Ok, just for my own personall edification, let me make sure I understand this fully.

I have a drawing of a pair of Mortal Kombat characters. I drew it, so it's ok to put in my portfolio.

I also have a drawing of Medusa. The Medusa is topless (as I've seen her in almost every picture I've seen). This is a portfolio no-no.

i understand where all of u are getting at, but i have one question: is it okay to make your own drawn copy of a copyrighted character and place it in your portfolio?

If you drew it thats fine. Its your work, just not your character.

Any minute now you guys are going to start yelling at me, I'm sure, but I have one more question:

What if you replicate a copyrighted work? Like, for example, you drew an exact copy of, say, a book cover? Is it ok to put it in there? Because I know the rules say no copyrighted work unless you own the copyright, but I also know you can't copyright a replica, even if you drew or painted the replication yourself.

If YOU drew the pic...it is fine...I draw comic book characters all the time...take a look at my portfolio

yes you should make a spot in your journal for quizzes...that is the best palce for them...

I don't know why I'm asking all of these questions. I don't even have a scanner. There's no way I COULD put my art in a portfolio. I'm so dirt poor it's not even funny.

So copywrite material is fine on the profile as long as there's something say who owns it... but a big no no for the portfolio...


Creations are ok either place... even if you drew the mona lisa over again, then you can post it because it's yours.. you did it...

What about pictures that you edit? Like say a fantasy picture and you change the woman's eyes and hair and such to make it seem more like you... ? Is that a no no on the portfolios?

That would be a no no for edited images.

Wouldn't it be nice if members had more protection over their work from art thieves.

Younger aged members tend for quizes because they haven't had as rich a life as some, and they want to get involved. Good on them, but if you are a younger member realise not many people take notice and as someone stated above, keep quizes in your JOURNAL. *ffs

it`s just common sense..you cannot use copyrighted material...on your portfolios...not even editing pictures from other sites..etc..it`s not difficult to understand:P:P

as i said before i have someone who helps me because i take pride in what others see of my profile and protfolio. also taking pictures is one of the way i make a living.so to see my work on someone elses protfolio who upset me. keep up the good work

that sucks... i had 3 pictures deleted from my portfolio without my permision....

as long as your portfoley doesn't have ANY GENITALIA, and soon as it's YOURS..go with it!

Agree with what's been said here before - copyright is a serious thing. Not only can it get you in trouble - but VR in trouble as well. It's a common sense rule...

I did have my own works and almost got in trouble for it...I had to explain that they were mine and copyrighted to me...It kind of scared me that I was going to loose my portfolio.

i was put on restriction for a week-BAD RENFIELD.

VentruE read the FAQ your permission is not needed to delete your portfolio. It can be done without warning from an admin. If you choose to ignore system messages in regards the portfolio you are lucky you weren’t suspended too.

I send out countless messages, some people ignore them. If a person has been on the site long enough to have received a system message about portfolios their portfolio is deleted and they are suspended for ignoring the message.

If the person is new to the site they are sent a message asking them to move their images.

there will always be a big hand of people that will never understand it.

a majority of the human race dont understand what copyright means. because as a race we are stupid and ignorant and these people like to make others think they are the creators of such beautiful art/pictures or whatever it may be. this rule should really apply to profiles as well, otherwise it should be cited as to where they got it so others wont mistake it for their own work and not giving the true creator credit
