This is an article I wrote some time ago. It is meant to shed some light on one of the most rare genetic diseases, as well as beeing a topic for discussion.

I would like your thoughts, ideas, experiencies with this conditions, and if you know someone with XP or you have been diagnosed with XP, I would very much like their story. Here it goes.

Many of us knows Claudia from Interview with a vampire. A beautiful little girl with pale skin, sharp fangs and a lust for blood.

A vampire child, but are they fictional or do we come across them in real life too.

Digging into some of my previous work, I came across the topic of real vampire children, and felt like sharing it.

Throughout history there are stories of children born with teeth and had an allergic reaction to sunlight.

The teeth especially, caused some problem in breastfeeding, because they would often bite through the skin, and blood would be mixed with the milk, and leaving the mother in a great deal of pain.

This, combined with old superstition and a nation ran by the church, was causing fright amongst people, so the mother had the hardest dilemma at all. Should she protect her child and live with the pain, or go to the local minister and confess her sins.

When a vampire child was discovered, the house would be blessed and the infant burned.

Thanks to modern civilisation this cruelty has been put to an end, and scientists have come up with a proper diagnose on Vampire children.

The condition is called xeroderma pigmentosum ( skin with lack of pigment ) and it is one of the most rare. It is a genetic disease, and the persons skin has an extraordinary sensitivity to sunlight, that something so common as going to the playground or off to buy groceries during the day, is almost impossible, because an ordinary expose to sunlight will result in development of skin cancer at a very early age.
So the Vampire children can only play outside safely after nightfall, which will later have the effect of anti socialisation, and not being able to adapt into various situations. This condition, even though it has a name now, is one of the things that has helped breathing new life to the many vampire stories, and the symptoms is the reason it is commonly known as the vampire disease.

Persons born with XP is not necessarily born with teeth as well.

IMPORTANT! Please bare in mind that this is meant to be a scientific, real life, tasteful debate, so let us leave Bram Stoker, Anne Rice and personal attacks out of it, thank you.

I've heard of this before, but never encountered any personally...sounds somewhat similar to porphyria.

It is in the same category as porphyria, yes. They are both classified as being Vampiric diseases.

Important note I forgot to mention, brain is a little slow today. Some of you may remember this from a long time ago, by Delilah22. That was me, but the thread was deleted when I changed my membername to Nianna, so I have taken it up again, and hope that the replys to it this time, will be less fictional.

There are other conditions as well that will cause a person to experience symptoms like sun poisoning, and others like hemophilia where a person has isues with hemoglobin and their body maintaining it usualy requiring either medicine to fix or drinking blood.

I have seen a movie base on a true storie, not fictional about this form of genetic disorder, the family in it had twins. Two little girls, the family already had an older boy who did not had the XP, but still, the worst thing was they had to move from a suppost to be "civilised" town cause their daughters were always attack and the father lsot his job, the mother was harrrass, the house was trash all the time with graphitie about"vampirire, sanke kids, blood suckers," and all sorts of things like that. In the end they got to a town who seem like to be closeminded but it was the oposite, they help out the family and even help found a doctor in another country, so in the end it was great cause, it even help me understand that even totady in a suppose to be"open minded society" there are still poeple who need a lesson or two in good manner and need to learn that children are not bloodsuckers beacause they can't go into sunlight. Still I would not trash a house for that. Anyway I am getting out of subject sorry.

In fact I did know a friend of mine who knew of someone with xp...we hung out a few time...he was very shy and Im guessing from the lack of social skills. He was home schooled all his life..because one his sensitivity towards the sun and the fact that his parents did not want him to feel outcasted by the ohter children. He ended up marrying my friend and they are very happy in there relationship. I havent seen them in a few years, but last I heard he was embracing it and actually had a whole new outlook on life.

Thank you for telling, that is great news for him.

It is easier today to live with XP. Especially in the States, there are special nightcamps for XP children. This is an oppertunity for them to socialize with others, and a great oppertunity for the parents to get educated and enlightened about this.

But they also serve as an oppertunity to exchange views and problems with XP.

a vevery nice thread this is.
an illness past down through DNA, much brake throughs have been made in the field of gene reaserch over the last decaide.
although science has yet to formily find how/what courses genes to replicate with a melfuntion.
it has though been able to hunt down and find many of these malfunction genes, and sooner or later through gene manipulation at fertilization they hope to eradicat many of these heridtory problems.

sort of reminds me of a recent movie quote "they say they have a quire, i say we are the quire"

yes i do believe that a certian number of vampires out there in the human world, act accordenly through the impulse of a yet to be found genetic blunder.

this does not take away from there rite to chose and live a certian lifestyle, it only begs to differ them from the real vampyres.

cheers

From my understanding any kind of light even that of a common light blub can cause people with XP a great deal of harm included in the list of cancers are those that invovle the eyes..
I am happy that this man grew up and has a justed to his XP....
I have also heard they rarly live past the age of 21 much like children that have cystic fybroisis.....
I know of the case with the little girls..I have seen that show as well....
I find this condiction and condictions like it very interesting and would love to learn more

In some ways, you are correct.. the light from an ordinary bulb can cause a great deal of papin, but it is mostly solar light that is dangerous. Yes children with XP has a slim chance of passing the age of 21. the oldest case with XP is a 48 year old Male who is living in Japan, the last I heard.

indeed interesting 48.. They must go above and beyond with him never setting foot outside during the day do you know if they treat him well????? I know the Japanese can be funny with certain types of people they either make them a national treasure or make the person an outcast...Choosing to call them Eta (sp) which means outcast btw......I had read they can't use regular light bulb and in fact had to use florecents as normal blubs have something in common with the sun a level of ultraviolets or some such...That they cant use comps either and that if they are exposed to this all it can cause things like neuverous (sp) system damage and brain cancers

I recall seeing a documentary on a family of 2 adults and two children who were allergic to the sun. They could only go out at night and do their playing and shopping. The father held night time jobs and earned a living that way. In times they had to go out during the day, but they had to suit up with all parts of their body covered, no matter how hot it got. This interested me, as had they lived in centuries past, they would have been thought of as vampires - luckily for them this is not the case.

after reading a few novels in which the lead character has XP....I got interested....
but extreme care with the eyes is the main point I have seen repeatedly..uv's are exceedingly dangerous to the vision in xp patients....
there are also other allergic reactions to sunlight and uv's less severe
I do know one girl who gets severe blistering at an accelerated rate on exposed skin in bright sun...nothing superatural about it..simply the same as heavy allergy hives

I have heard of it and it brought back a memory of a friend in my childhood when I lived in Kansas City, MO. It was a girl that I lived next door to and played with sometimes at night in the backyard. But when I was 8 we moved away and I don't know where she or anything really about her condition. I just remember she wasn't allowed to play during the day.

hmm.. interesting indeed, but I was more looking for XP. what scientist refer to as junk DNA, is not the case with XP. XP is a genetic malfunction, not extra DNA. But thank you anyway for sharing.

Oh and F, you said you have had experience with a case of XP, is it possible for you to give a more detailed account. NO names and such, just the actual experience would help a great deal, thank you.

That is because it is the case. Eventhough it does not say so directly, the fact that the sunlight could kill them, suggests XP.

XP is not lethal by nature, it is the skincancer that comes with it, that does the trick.

Saying that sunlight can kill them because of skin cancer is a bit like saying sunlight can kill any human because of skin cancer. Though a person with XP may be far more likely to develope skin cancer and with less exposure, cancer takes some time to manifest and then more time to kill. Saying that sunlight kills a person with XP creates the false impression of people bursting into flames.

I, too have done research here and there on certain aspects of these types of illnesses and found that there is more than one kind of desease or illness or genetic dyfunction that can cause one to seem like a vampire. The one you just discribed is one of the more common. It's very interesting and I will be looking into it a bit more. Thank you for sharing.

Yes, it provides the wrong image, and I have not said that sunlight itself kills them.. it is the skincancer that evolves, and are provoked by sunlight.

And yes there are several illnesess that can be classified as "vampire" diseases.

Do you know why this type of issue could happen at 27?

Almost anyone spending too much time in the sun can blister. Yes...big 2nd degree burn blisters.

A second degree burn involves the top layer of skin as well as part of the layers underneath. The skin is a light red and blistery, somewhat swollen and moist and oozing. The pain is very severe.

People with especially pale skin or lots of freckles are notoriously at risk for this kind of sun damage. Too much time can very from a couple hours to actual sunbathing depending on conditions and locations. Your doctor may have felt the reaction to be normal based on given conditions and your skin type.

No XP is something you are born with. Like FelixFelix said. it has to do with skintype... persons with light skintone is more sensetive to sunlight than people with a darker skintone.

It also depends on how much time you spend in the sun. The more time you spend, the more your skin gets used to the sunlight.

Also diseases like XP, PLE (Polymorphus Light Eruption), and Porphyria are serious skin conditions. If one has one of these conditions, it's likely that it would be diagnosed very early in childhood.

Blistering skin or easily sunburned skin is not the same. There is usually a far more reasonable cause for those more common reactions to the sun.

However, in an effort to help you better understand what could cause that, here's a link to sun allergies: Sun Allergy on eCureMe that explains how certain drugs, topical creams and even perfumes and sunscreens can cause allergic reactions to sunlight and leave us with a rash or a pretty bad burn.

Hope that's not too off topic.

But i have seen several news castings and articles on families that have a child with this and it is very hard to deal with. they can go to school like other children. they sleep at night to be able to play at night. they completely re-do there entire life to help this child feel normal and it is disgusting how ppl treat it has a contagious disease to the touch. all those who beleive that need to get over them selves and remember they are children to. don't they deserve a life like us. regardless what time of day it takes place.

I have seen documentaries on this condition. One school in the film set aside one room and covered all possible inlets for light so the little girl could come to school for a day with her friends. They acted like it was no big deal -- they asked questions, she and her family answered them, and otherwise she was just like her friends. Not too far from where I used to live was a house with no windows at all on the front -- I don't know about the back. Someone told me a girl lived there who was extremely sensitive to sunlight. Lupus is another condition that makes one extremely sensitive to sunlight -- my cousin has it, and as a child could not be in sunlight long enough to even walk across a mall parking lot. Her parents had to drop her off at the door, then go park.

Sakara -- were you taking any kind of medication when you had your reaction to the sun? Certain medications, such as birth control pills and certain antibiotics (i.e. tetracycline) will increase one's sensitivity to the sun. Certain herbal supplements, such as St. John's Wort, will, also. Some women I've known have become more sun-sensitive due to hormonal changes that occur as they get older -- some of these started having them as young as their late 20s and early 30s. Just a thought.

From what I have been reading of the genetic history of my parents on both sides. There is a 25% chance the child will be born with a double dominant or double ressecive gene. As we all know iron comes in four forms( fe+2, iron in it's stable form; iron in a bonded ; fe+1 Iron only found in labs, highly unstable and iron in a compound) Each with a different protien coating. There has been evidence that autoi mmunity is linked with the double dominant gene resulting in the immune system not recognising the protien coating for iron in the stable and iron in a bonded form, but does recognise iron in an unstable form and iron in a compound.
There was a study done according to notes I have found from my father's family files Also stating syptoms resulting in anemia from such conditions and a massive decrease in rbs after 120 days. though oddly enough there were vague reports on the length of telomeres and the change of chemical composition in the body. Though I do not know for certian what else is linked with the enheiratance. though if you would like to further discuss this, feel free to contact me.

I do not think that a person with that (rare) skin disease is considered a vampire at all. That disease is caused by genetics and the code of bases in strands of DNA and RNA; it has nothing to do with Vampirism.

prototypical homosapiens had different diets thus different teeth,

ancient genes are always in the fabric of the puzzle pieces of life, there are advanced humans wihtout wisdom teeth because of the narrowing of the jaw in time, due to evolution and what others find is sexy,
ancient genes of different sets of teeth arise every now and then especially if the the genome is under attack. The fact that her skin is white means that her parents or forefathers went through a transformation to lose the skin tone, it can be covered up, but also some genes lies dormant and then express themselves in the lotto ball pot luck formation of genes in baby making.

If you were born with fangs, you would look in the mirror and think of nothing else to do with them but to sink your teeth in all the peoples necks who think you to be strange.

The other forces of evolution are based upon sexual selection, than someone is keeping fangs in the gene pool because they think it to be sexy, the more people with fangs that impregnate women, the more fanged kids there will be, and the more men are attracted to women with fangs, and white skin the more babies that come from them will have these physical features.

Things like having 5 wisdom teeth stick around for everyone has a piece of the puzzle in terms of what is needed to be harvested to make a new child. Some have no wisdom teeth and are highly evolved, but to get to a very evolved state it takes mistakes in baby making to get there, so we have to dip into the gene pool of fanged women to keep the more highly evolved race of humans alive. We will never be separated from our ancient roots.

Parroting a text.........Well yeah ty FelixFelix for the link to Sun allergies it came in helpful although I know it doesnt take me long to have blisters or hives due to exposure this has started to happen over the last couple of years..My doc had said it was a combo of bith the sun light and heat.....When it is to hot outside I well have to stay inside until it cools off or go from one place to another fast and get in out of the heat and sun....
Many Medications have interactions with the sun and they tell you plainly not to have repeated exposure to the sun or other UV sources

Please all, read the note in the original post. LEAVE FICTION OUT OF THIS!

Mikhali, thank you, it just shows you have actually read the post, and thank you for the input. this goes for the rest of you as well.

Yes Nightwalker, it sound a lot like porphyria, but it is not a branch of it, nor are they related on a genetic level. But, they are put in the same category.

Heard of it, never met it...maybe when I will start the Pediatrics Internship, I will find out more... actually now there are few solutions for that, like allogenic transplant, stem cell research, sun-block solutions, anti-inflamattory solutions, anti-histaminic drugs...genetics is also taken in consideration, but until the use of it for the general good it is a long way...
For those with limited views, those children are not vampires or what so ever...they are just human being suffering from a terrible disease (no, drinking blood or anything else related would not help!)

LOL Niana you go girl..Please the lady is so right.. Belief systems are not an issue here...XP is just one of many genetic diseases that have been called Vampire diseases in the past it is however the highest on list of my interests due infact mostly to the introduction of a fictional character by Dean Koontz...
I have read a great deal and have wondered about the real people with this condition ever since, worried for them as so many people seem to be intolarent of people they have no understanding for..

I bored even myself with repeating this, but: we use 10% of our brains and we don't know almost anything about ourselves so we usually consider difference as deviance, who can say then that those "deviancees" aren't evolution actually?

This disease has nothing to do with the brain its in the gene's DNA.........

well I hope that what I posted was considered to be scientific. There is such a thing as sexual selection, and the whole bit about why these genes may be in the gene pool from long ago is because of the dormancy of these traits they may be recessive homozygous traits, where one would need the double expression of hidden genes in the mother and fether, even if the father or mother don't have the expression of them.

I am sorry I did not use the term recessive homozygous in my post to make it more scientific. I was just trying to be understood and I hope that my post helkped people understand how this XP came to be and how it is passed on.

Personally I do not care if you use latin terms, or two lines to explain one word. The important thing for me is that people understand it and can learn from it. Science is also about new discoveries to allready known objects, cases etc.

Mikhali, once again I thank you for the imput.

yeah, the reasons why I have to use big words is not that I am a show off. The big words exist because there are multi small words within one word, or a concept as you say that takes "two lines" or even a paragraph or a world of experience to convey. It is just that I have been dumbed down to not use big words because it leads people to not to understand concepts, so I am trying to find new balance with scientific expression that is not going to repulse people from the perfection of science or not communicate my idea right.

Of course there was a lot of humor on my initial post to describe sexual selection in a funny vampiric way, that makes the science enjoyable to accept into their schematas. I hope my humor doesn't detract from the usefulness of the post.

I shouldn't have been funny I know. I am sorry for doing that, you are trying to do a more astute type of post. The hollywood stereotype of these topics is something I am fighting against every time I post. Yu don't know how many times I edit something I have in the back of my head to say because I know people cannot handle the truth. I wish I didn't have to edit the truth, even on a vampire site, but I have found it is neccessary to be read to make a difference in other peoples lives, on all topics. I have made a comprimise in order to make a difference on the level I am allowed.

Zlee. That stated fact is something most people know or have heard, but where does it belong in this topic? did you even bother to read my work, and the other very great posts in this thread.

Like Mikhali said, it is at a GENETIC level, this XP, it has nothing to do with intelligence, lack of it or what so ever.

However, the brain plays a part of this, this part to be exact.

The Hypothalamus, is located in the front part of the Diencephalon. It is very minute, is in charge of both body temp control, fear, sexual behavior etc.

Due to a genetic error, the Hypothalamus is unable to produce the required amount of pigmentation, and by not doing so, XP persons have very pale skin, and their defences are down, which makes them easy victims to skin cancer.

I remember watching a talk show once on children with rare diseases. There was a little boy who had a rare skin disease and he couldn’t go out into the sunlight, can’t remember what disease he had. NASA actually designed a suit for him based on the technology they used to make the astronauts suits and donated it to him just so he could go out in the sunlight to play with other children. He looked like he was wearing a radiation suit, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a child happier than him when they gave it to him.

that is what latex catsuits is for the werewolf girls.

The hypothalmus I believe, because I always get screwed up about the various brain areas, (the lingo of the brain is even difficult for me) the pituitary creates the horemones, just about all of them, and sends them to the hypothalmus for releasage into the blood stream. Adrenaline from the lower back, testosterone which you get from the family jewels, and whatever the thyroid produces. You shgould all get your thyroid checked especially f you have rough hands, kind of like a thick tongue and are out of sorts emotionally. If that is the case then just use more iodized salt fortified in your food and see if that makes a difference. We run on hormones people. Unless you want something like fangs white skin and blood lust then ignore this post, not to say yo could get XP since it is genetic, but come to think of it, the body does evolve in one lifetime, and if you don't get the right nutrition, maybe that could be one of the reasons why these XP people exist. The parents defunct genes, because genes split on the DNA, and that is how disease starts out, your body continue to deteriorate genetically, but your child could catch this mutation from your lack of nutrition.

Sometimes evolution happens real fast, like as is the case, if AIDS had hit in the 1960's it would have spread really really quickly because we didn't have the science then to deal with it, yet we had the freedom of love to make it world wide, especially with events like woodstock and soldiers going over seas. There are some men who have a gene mutation which make them impervious to AIDS, and should have AIDS knocked off a great percentage of the population, and they didn't know how to diagnose it, or because of it's incunation time period where it can be passed on to someone else, the only people who would be alive today woul dbe the ones with the genes that are defending the body from AIDS.

That is how the diaspora of new genes takes the world by storm.

If it is a recessive gene, it manifest itself at boys...girls usually have the complementary gene that supresses the "bad" gene...I am not sure if the disease is X-linked, which would explain better the prevalence of the disease in boys...at girls usually manifests if both recesive genes are present...

Hmm, a close friend of mine has that. She has to keep her body covered at all times, and carries a parasol with her everywhere. She can stay out for quite a while on cloudy days, and at sunset when the sun rays have severely declined. Her skin is also sensitive to a lot of other things like chlorine and pollution. When she was a little kid she had to go swimming wearing a full body dry suit, a water hat, and SPF 50 sunscreen.

If I remember correctly, some people with xp can and do get burned by the sun in a matter of minutes. Blister type burns ( 2nd degree) because their skin has no natural protection at all.
Being clinically light sensitive( for those that don't understand I have been tested,my eyes, repeatedly and I have been diagnosed with photophobia) I can only imagine what people with XP must feel looking at bright light.
I know it makes my eyes burn, tear right away and will give me a terrible migraine if my eyes go unprotected.

Yes you are right. People with XP can get burned by the sun. That is why, when they decide to go out during daytime, they wear sunscreen with a very High SPF, and some of them oil themselves with fat moistorising creams and lotions of all kinds to keep their skin healthy.

Ahh...thank you for your...ehh...imput. Not to be rude, but I doubt you read the post and the others as well. This is not about making vampires or any related questions, this is a debate about the illnesses such as XP and prophyria, where the XP is a skin disease and prophyria is more a blood disease, in the situation where the body is not producing enough blood.

Both illnesses are popularly named vampiric diseases, but has nothing to do with the vampires and their creation known from books and movies, so I would prefer such things are left out of this, thank you.

About 10 years ago, I was living across the street from a boy who could not go outside during the day. His mother told me that it was because he was allergic to the sun. I didnt care much for the sun at that time either, and I eventally met the boy. he was older than me but very young in the mind. We did not get along. But I did try several times to bring him out of his shell, as we were both out of our houses slightly after dusk, It just didnt take. His mother was using her sons disease to turn him into the next generation of sociopath. It was sad. that is about the only encounter of such a kind that I have.

i belive that there are vampire children. there are a few diseaeses which give the children symptoms of a vampire: can not go outside, another one is a disease that affects the blood they can not produce much blood and need constant transfusions of blood. they have a shot for it that helps your body produce more blood but some people have actually chosen to take blood from victums human victums in this disease the children are sensitive to sunlight and they need blood to survive.
