The Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp, or 'The Lizard Man Of Lee County', is a humanoid creature rumored to inhabit the swampy areas of Lee County, South Carolina.

It was first reported by 17 year old Christopher Davis on June 29, 1988, around the hours of 2 AM. He was driving home from work, taking a road that borders Scape Ore Swamp, when his tire blew out, forcing him to stop. While Davis was changing the tire, he claimed to have heard a loud thump from a field across the road. He would later say to Associated Press news services:

“I looked back and saw something running across the field towards me. It was about 25 yards away and I saw red eyes glowing. I ran into the car and as I locked it, the thing grabbed the door handle. I could see him from the neck down – the three big fingers, long black nails and green rough skin. It was strong and angry. I looked in my mirror and saw a blur of green running. I could see his toes and then he jumped on the roof of my car. I thought I heard a grunt and then I could see his fingers through the front windshield, where they curled around on the roof. I sped up and swerved to shake the creature off.”
Davis would later give a clearer physical description of the creature as being around seven feet tall with the same details as above.

Davis arrived home in a panicked state, waking up his parents. Trying to figure out what had happened, his father went out to look at the car. There were scratches around the door handle and the side-view mirror had been twisted badly. On the top of the car was a series of deep scratches and grooves.

This report sparked off a rush of Lizard Man reports that lasted all summer and encompassed not just Scape Ore Swamp and Bishopville, South Carolina where the original report was made, but the whole of Lee County. At the height of the Lizard Man scare, police were receiving so many calls about the Lizard Man that people with more immediate problems could not get through, and a separate Lizard Man Hotline had to be established.

By August of the same year the Lizard Man scare had died down, and few reports concerning it have been made since.

As of July 2005, the Lizard Man has "reappeared" in television promotions for South Carolina's state lottery.

In October 2005, a woman in Newberry, South Carolina reported to the police that she had seen two creatures resembling the Lizard Man outside her home. The responding officer, Officer Michael Kennedy, apparently amused, told the woman that the creatures "just like to check on humans from time to time

Tell me what you think it can be..

We all have our urban legend and myth, most of them are oax, here we have the monster of the lak call Memphre, and it is say many has seen it even news papers, so I am sorry but it will take me more then second hand sight, for this type of thinfgs I need first eye to eye contact.
Or at least a good, not a blurry, but an excellent poloroid, not a photo that can be fix, but a poloroid.

With all the wierdness Ive seen in my travels, and all the creepy shit Ive come up against, while I dont know exactly what it might be, I sure am not so much a fool as to doubt that something like that might actually exitst. Though at the same time I dont think ALL of those people saw this creature. Humans hear about it once and then see it forever. They're wierd.

It depends on how drunk he was, how well lit the place was, and how many psychos in lizards suits happened to be around at the time. I imagine the first sighting was just a hallucination, and the rest were made up or the result of mass hysteria.

Yeah..I know what it is..I see it sometimes..*puff puff*

Just Kidding, I think it was a hallucination, a mindtrick. A young( problebly drunk, stoned and on drugs) reading too much Sci-Fi and in his rush he sees something that is taken of a magazine.

Or maybe it was a man that ran, and the way the light fell gave his eyes a reddish glow.

I think maybe it might be some creature sience has yet to Identify. I mean science has explained many things and also not explored many things.

I guess we may never know.

Hahaha, this is definitely one of the funnier ones. Is it a hoax, a number of overactive imaginations, or the truth? We may never know, and it's better that way.

it very well could be an attention getter by some kid who wanted attention but it is interesting in anycase. If it is a creature there are more and maybe we should let it be.

I am from south carolina, no longer live there, but have family and friends there. I have heard nothing of this charachter from them, but who knows? It sounds like a swamp-version of the "Sasquatch" lore we have all heard so much of. If you want an interesting story from the Coastal areas and Barrier Islands, do some research on "The Grey Man." VERY interesting tale, that one. I have family members who have seen him. He appears 2-3 days before a hurricane, to warn of the approaching storm.

In researching about the lizard man, this is what I found.
South Carolina lizards are not aggressive. However, that doesn't rule out the possibility. Some lizards such as the 10-foot long Komodo dragons of Indonesia could be perceived as very aggressive. I have been unable to find any that would eat chrome, but "no experiments have ever been designed to feed metal to lizards."

Another theory could be that the Lizard Man was looking for a mate. Some male lizards will sometimes move long distances looking for mates, and could explain why Lizard Man was always in a hurry. We must then assume that Lizard Women look like cars, and instead of biting the chrome bumper Lizard Man was kissing it.
As far as Lizard Man walking upright, the basilisk lizards of tropical America and collared lizards of the Southwest run on their back legs.
In the end I'm not saying the Lizard Man story is true or not true. The point is that there are so many amazing creatures in the world that it's not necessary to make one up. We don't have to invent mythical animals. We have enough real ones to keep us fascinated for a lifetime.

Its things like that that really make a person wonder about the government and nuclear plants and such. Speaking from a scientific point of view here, the only such things I have ever encountered that sound like the lizzard man, is located in museums. dinosaurs to be exact. but what if they all didnt go extinct? but evolutionized? take the alligator and crocodile for instance. they have been around since dinosaurs roamed and they didnt go extinct. but mereley evolved to the world around them. i do think perhaps that this could have happened in the lizzard man issue.

Even if someone did see this "creature" I doubt any of the other sightings are real.
Personally I think the kid could've been confused, he might well have seen something, it just might not have been what he thought it was. And whenever one person see's something everybody else automatically decides they've seen it as well.

The mindi s apowerful tool. Sometimes people will see things because they want to. not saying it couldn`t happen but I would guess about 1 out of every 10 calls were people who actually saw something for real.

i imagine that there's alot we don't see regarding intelligent creatures. i mean, concerning Bigfoot, the Loch Ness monster and the like, i think they'd be smart enough to keep their distance from humans, but play with us every now and then...my theory on UFO's and close encounters is much the same.

In Portugal we have a myth also...

Very old, but, everyone stills believeing in it...

"Tardo" is the name....

Some kind of a black cat, wandering at night, eyes full of fire, etc...

For me, someone needed to find a "creature" to define, his own demons...

The truth is, today is the day, that everyone believes in it...

This is so interesting. I love reading about stuff like this. What was going through my mind reading that story was "Man, he must have been on some really hard drugs" haha, either that, or it really happened. I have dreamed of weird creatures that were never known to existence. It does creep me out a little..it could be possible.

we all have some reptile in our DNA - we ultimately come from the same evolutionary tree. it is possible that some defect during gestation could result in a person being born with some reptilian characteristics. if such a child survived, its mother would probably try to hide it - so it would most likely grow up in darkness. its eyes would be reflective - like an animals (hence the glow), and its skin pale - so that it could appear to take on any colour that may reflect on it. alternatively, the greenish look could be a fungal growth of some kind.

if John Merrick had not found fame, who would have believed Elephant Man to be real?

i think it may be true - but it is probably a one of freak, rather than an undicovered race.
