I may be mudding the waters here and trying to make something complicated which wasn't meant this way but in a earlier thread that just closed a question was posed.
"How do you know this entity isn't malevolent or dangerous to you or those around you? "
Posed by Evangius, in reference to spirit guides/companions thread here that closed.
This question got my curiousity up and I tried to make an answer to this question.
I am asking is there a way of telling the difference between a benevolent spirit guide and a malevolent enity that means you harm?
My belief here is that spirit guides are just an extension of ourselves that take form in animal form...
To offer an opposing viewpoint, it's often hard to tell the difference between a benevolent and malevolent force, but generally, benevolent guides will not hesitate to provide credentials in whatever form you can accept. It seems they will show you that they mean you no harm if you simply ask...
Well spirit guides can be any form, not just animal.
And as to whether they are there to cause harm or not is really dependent on whether you truely need one at the time.
Some people out grow the need for one but still think they do.
In some cases like this the guide stirs up problems because it has no real purposed being around.
As to you being able to tell.
Well how can you tell if a person is harmful or not.
The same goes for guides.
I don't know, I could be wrong, but I would think you would be able to sense & feel the difference. I mean kind of like your inner self would know. There is always something inside us that warns us of things. Just my opinion though.
Thank you for posting here makes me feel a tad less nervous....
La6Muerte66 how would a spirit provide credentials though???
Lown: I am aware they come in any form just mine well take the form of animals and since I was more familiar with the anuimus types I said what I did..
Southren what if they are bad and willing to decieve you in some way, I know people tend to take things for granted, not saying you are hun just that some do this...
Several questions all in one thread, humm.
Spirit guide is a general term for a spiritual being that is there to guide you. That's by definition.
An animal guide is or maybe the same as a spirit guide but in a form that will benefit you at that moment or match your energy to that particular energy of that animal.
Neither one is from you or a direct part of you. But is there to guide you on your own spirit or higher path. Intuition is some times thought of as part of you, on some level of being, but not guides. Do not get caught up in the 'what if' trap.
And didn't some guy in robes and sandals say something about telling the difference between someone leading you astray or helping you? 'You can tell from the tree and the fruit that it gives. A healthy tree will give you healthy fruit, and a disease tree will give you disease fruit.'
If you find that your Life is not feeling right for you, and you will know, then change guides.
Good points billy :D
Also on the question of if you have a guide and not know it.
It does happen. that is what meditation is for.
So that you can clear your thoughts and work things out. If you are able to do this right you can find your spirit guide.
I believe they help you whether you acknowledge them or not. but of course that is just my thought.
It took me awhile to figure out I had one, but when I did I quickly out grew it for some reason LOL.
Skylla your questions struck me as very valid. I believe you’d know by the feel of a spirit when you first encounter it as to if it’s good or bad.
Could one turn evil? If we assume it has free will then yes but would it have free will? That's a question I'm asking.
But I do believe it’s possible to have a spirit guide and not know it simply because people have a tendency to ignore this type feeling as unnatural or evil. Few are those who accept and embrace it enough to be able to make sense of it.
Would their refusing to acknowledge it turn it evil if that's possible?
This is probably only muddying the waters more but I'm curious about it.
I too am curious as to if the spirit could fool us, I mean we may feel comfortable yet who is to say that they are not decieving you for their own prupose and use?
Can they have free will to do such, I also would like to know. I have encountered good and bad yet none that was decieving as of yet, so if someone does have any info on this it would be appreciated.
Well the thing is, you have a spirit guides for a specific purpose.
they are to guide you along until you learn and understand this purpose fully.
When you learn this purpose you no longer have a need for this guide.
Another one may come along to help with another purpose, though you only get tossed as much as you can handle at once.
I have been threw 3 different guides so far and each helped me with a different part of my awakening and growth spiritually.
Once I out grew their purpose they just kinda drifted off.
I know they still watch over me in some way, but I do not see them anymore due to the fact I have learned all I can from them.
If they are just extensions of yourself why use a guide in the first place if the answers and abilities are already within?
Also another thing.
they would not be a spirit guide if they where around to do you harm.
A spirit guide means you no harm, they are their to do their job of helping you.
Deceiving and lieing to you does not fit into this.
Sao if a spiritual being does this they they are not a spirit guide.
Yes Lown I noticed I had a different guide during my awakening then I have now but I still have my older one as well the Hawk has always been my primary guide now he has a the black bear but just a few months ago I had a fox as well this one doesnt seem to be around anymore..
I never really questioned before if a spirit was a good or bad or could mislead me as I think they come from a deeper part of ourselves and not an external thing like a ghost
Well if you think of it in the way that we all come from the same source of energy. Most call it the "All".
So given the fact we all come from the same source, that would mean that in a way, our spirit guides are a part of ourselves.
Its a bit of a stretch for some to understand, but it does make sense in a way.
If I need guidance in my normal life I don't usually create a different persona to help me through it, that would be crazy. Why is doing this in an astral sense is any different?
I believe in the spirit guide as an animal and that you can have a spirit companion as a guide. I have a cat that runs up to my room whenever I get out my Book of Shadows or when I'm reading tarot. He also runs up there when I'm depressed or crying. He knows in some way when I need him or when I'm working with magick.
Thats why I think spirit guides take form in animals, but I also agree that they sometimes keep their spirit form and are an entity with you.
Spirit guides may have been living at one time. Just think of JC for one. Some people of the past have been fragments of a much greater being. Some of the ascended masters are now being born to be just that, guides in the flesh. I'm keeping my eye on Deepak myself.
You are given two guardians when you started your life here, since your first lifetime. They stay with you throughout all your life times. It is they who work and bring other guides to work with your learning experiences. This is why you can never be alone. It is impossible. One of these guides will be with you - always.
And as I have said, these guides are not of you but helpers behind the screen/veil. If you wish to talk to them, that is praying. Chat up a storm if you like, they will hear. If you would like to hear them, that is called meditation. You must calm your mind chatter to be able to listen. There are also tapes available to meet these Spirit guides. It is a form of visualization and is very easy to do yourself.
I am not saying that a spirit guide is a persona of yourself.
I was just giving a way that in some belief systems that that could fit in with a [persons thought system.
If you do not agree then so be it. Does not mean you have to attack a person for it.
I myself think of a spirit guide as a separate entity in itself, but as I said each person has their own belief system and thoughts and values.
One can only go by what one believes when it comes to a religious/spiritual thing.
Well Evangius as I personally see it the reason we do this is because we need our subconscience to help guide us..I don't know it all this is just my belief and I am willing to learn from others as my beliefs arent set in stone
Since when is asking a question attacking? If I made another persona of myself in my normal every day life to help me through questions I wanted answers would that or would it not be considered crazy?
Now some people gave answers towards the end that some astral spirit guides were merely projections of the self, how is that any different from what I asked about making a persona in your normal every day means?
Just seems to be a rather redundant thing to do.
And since only the "All" is perfect, guides in any form may mislead you. Although the spiritual guides will not. Your own guardians will not allow them. If in doubt of any guide advice, ask if they are from the Light. If you sense they are withdrawing or refuse to answer, then dismiss them. Don't waste your time.
Evangius I dont seeyour question as attacking I got intrigued by you question in the other thread wanted to find out more
The all might be perfect but the representatives are not. Find me a perfect religion or spirituality and then tell me that I am to trust beings that are employed by them?
Yeah I don't think I can buy that.
I was commenting to LI Mikhail not to you. I think the questioning of things should be something we do particularly in reference to supposed guides that are sent here to help us.
Things like free will and choice come into play, as well as who said that the universe was a creation of morality? It doesn't have to be moral to be perfect. Evil to us could be just as satisfactory in the grand scheme of things as what we might consider good.
Thus spirit guides could be here to simply lead everyone straight to where they don't want to go because it might be easier for that than to go the other direction. The path of least resistance.
Trust and taking a leap of faith have been talked about for many a good aeon. Lets save that for another thread. Please stay on the topic of spirit guides.
Could be Evangius...Still feel that at times we need a guidence we dont receive on a consciece levels if this is our astral being leading us then well it is alot to think about..
As I disgest things slower then some I will ponder this and then come back later
I am actually right on topic, trust and leaping of faith is exactly what people are doing with Spirit guides is it not?
You alluded that the All was perfect and I suggested that it needn't be moral to be perfect which leads us to square one, why trust spirit guides?
Thax billy that is true.
Im having a bit of trouble getting all my thoughts together right now. Damn insomnia kicking my a$$
Normally yes I would have to agree with you that all spirit guides are of the light, but one of mine was of nether light nor dark. It was indifferent to these two as its purpose had nothing really to do with both, but everything at the same time.
Of course this might just be my experience and the fact that I nether really lean towards the light or the dark. I do what is necessary for mine and my family and friends survival.
As to the multi persona thing, I never said that. But again it comes down to the fact of each person has a separate belief system.
What might not make sense to you may make sense to another person.
Why would all guides have to be of the light if the universe as some believe is made up of a dual nature of light and darkness?
Isn't it logical that some could be from the Dark? Though I have to say that simply from being the Dark doesn't make something evil, but most might view it that way.
I dont see either way myself Evangius as I dont believe in a dual nature I think all things to be nuetral(sp)
It is all subjective we make things into alight dark thing not the universe or the guides..
I think we tend to do this because it is easier for us as people to deal with things that are black or white again my opinion here
That's true, we do have different belief systems as we have different taste in music. We move to the same frequency that we resonate to. Another reason to have different guides during our lifetime.
As for trusting them, we don't. Free will for one. But there is another reason why we do. And that is past contracts that we made. Either in spirit or another past life. Not seeing through the veil or forgetting our past can suck. This is where we trust. For our better good - we hope. Sometimes we call for help, who hasn't, we just forget that too.
Don't trust or listen to them. See what happens. If you need to move on and refuse, they will shout in your ear. Louder and louder. Another great reason we don't need to preach to other people. Someone is there if and when needed.
That is interesting Mikhail because if there is no dual nature and it is all subjective any system of definite morality would also be subjective. Therefore any spirit guide that isn't an Egregore would also be subjective to it's own views of right and wrong, good and evil.
Thus you have even more of a problem trusting the spirit guide.
I like the Rider Waite Tarot, did you notice Billy that the fool is only one step away from the cliff?
One wrong decision from some Spirit guide you only trust once and you could be taking one hell of a plunge? Are you really suggesting the only way to trust them is through experience even if it means potential immediate peril?
Hmmm it almost seems as if you are trying to make this as difficult as possible by over thinking things.
Somethings are simple and cut and dry.
You ether trust them or you do not.
Ether way it is on you to make this choice.
As for the duality, that is just another word for conflict. There is a state of being where everything simply is. Saying "whatever" is the answer. If only people really understood the statement.
I have taken that step. More than once.
Taken 300 pills - twice, was no easy thing. But I now got what many only dream they could touch only a little. Been there. First hand. Yes, it is scaring as hell. But a leap is just that, a leap.
As for that fool, it is the first card, the journey begins. Not many are willing to take that first step/ leap.
Anything having to do with a belief system in in itself an act of faith and a leaf in the dark.
If one is unwilling to experience the "unknown" then one cannot life life to the fullest potential.
If you do not want to believe that a spirit guide could benefit a person then that is your choice.
Others see it different. To learn to let another person believe as they wish is a valuable lesson in life.
Why shouldn't I overthink things? Is it better to make an irrational decision towards guides on the fly? The whole thread was presented because of my last question on the last post, if you don't like it why do you continue to post to it yourself?
Of course it is for me to make this choice which is why exactly I proposed the question in the first place. So far nothing definitive has been suggested to me that makes me think that Guides couldn't simply lead you astray as much as they might help you.
I have heard about the All being perfect, countered with perfection doesn't mean moral and then nothing else was suggested to disprove or change my mind on that matter. So again the question of the integrity of the guides is called into question.
Duality, conflict, good, evil, yes all semantics but it doesn't exactly show any case for any specific moral intention on anyone's part even the supposed God or Gods that come into play through the universe.
So once again this doesn't answer the fact that there could be diabolical evil spirit guides ready to throw people over the cliff.
The nature of a spirit guide is not evil. So in that sense what you are suggesting would not be a "spirit guide" it would be something else.
I believe I am even repeating my self by saying that.
I would agree that you continuing to repeat that and it would seem to be a waste of time because it doesn't exactly answer my question.
I didn't ask if you believed them to be good I asked how you knew. I am afriad your belief in the matter does nothing to prove anything to anyone that is looking into this. You haven't given strategies or a logical presentation to explain why these things are good.
What is interesting now in this conversation is not only should I "trust" spirit guides but I should base that on "trusting" you.
I don't think I can handle that without anything more definitive to sway me.
Evangius there very well could be as you say. I tend to trust myself but not many around me and coming to self trust was a very hard lesson I had to learn, I was taught not to trust myself.
The Question is a good one but not sure you'll ever find an answer to it unless willing to explore all sides of the question again this isnt an attack on anyone just my opinion here...
I think the answer might be in here somewhere not sure exactly where as we all seem to have our own belief systems well in place maybe its piece meal the answer that is...
Why would I want to feel someone's headache or pain? I am not sure I would need a guide for that seems pretty self explanatory, I sure wouldn't be willing to go astral for a request like that.
How would having a guide be of any other use than simple common sense in this case? If this is enlightenment I am sure glad I am in the dark :)
Oh Mikhail I already know what to do with entities around me. I get rid of them in the most brutal ways possible so that I don't usually have to deal with the rest very much.
I think that trusting entities is probably one of the worst mistakes people can make and from looking on this thread I see people who blindly put faith and trust into things that they probably shouldn't. Yes it is their view to do so and that is all well and Muy Bien but it doesn't mean that those looking into it should not have a clear view that they may not be getting the nice cherubim baby leading them around to love or "enlightenment."
I think it is irresponsible for people to give advice to others to seek them out and not give the disclaimer that all is not nice and fun in the universe and that there could be things out there to do you harm in the guise of these "spirit guides."
So far there has been nothing definite in making sure they are good aside from trusting LI, or the fun trial and Error that Billy suggested.
Im not telling you to "trust" me Im not telling to you have to believe me.
Im giving things from my view point which is all I can do.
Nothing from my belief system it seems will "prove" anything to you because you refuse to except that I have blind faith in the path before me, which comes from experiences that cannot be conveyed by words.
Somethings just cannot be explained and to expect things to be explained or they simplily cannot be true is a wrong mind set to have.
ok, my turn to add my two cents in on this, if the spirit guide is of good nature, wouldn't you believe that your inner person that would be in tune with the spirit guide would let you know everything is ok, and tell you if it is not? I would think that there would be fear felt with a guide that had ill intent for you. but this has been a very interesting forum, and was a joy to read.
Ok, I beleive in Spirit Guids, and a certain someone here on the rave helped affirm that beleif for me. And for that I am thankful. I know that they can take any form, but for me personally, it is in animal form
Well for me being Native American we beleive in spirit animals who guide us and posses simular characteristics as we do. We also beleive that we have spirit guides who are our loved ones who have passed on.
I am not sure if you know about an author called Dawn Hill she wrote a series of great books here in australia that answers all the questions posed here in this thread. So I do recommend reading her work, she works with her spirit guide in providing information for developing psychics, but also information on all spiritual matters.
One of her biggest lessons is knowing the difference from you guide to someone who is pretending to be your guide, and I think its relevant to this topic. Her suggestion on knowing who your guide is how they speak to you, if your guide ridicules you, puts you down or anything of the sort you know they are false. A true guide that is there to help you will be full of love and gentleness and will only help if you ask for it.
Again I also believe you can feel it. I have had moments where a so called guide had nasty intentions and I felt something wasn't right, so rely on your instincts.
Mikhail~ To answer the question you asked me! I still think that your instinct would let you know if they were bad or trying to mislead you.. I mean me personally I don't think a spirit guide is good or evil really. It is just a spirit with the best intentions for you. Not making you make certain decisions, but being there to kind of watch over you when you make the right or wrong choices. They advise you on what is best, but they don't make you do what they want, so if you don't agree, then they are fine with it. They will still stick by you & try to help you along. I think the decisions & choices are still ours to make. So wether it was bad or good, you internally would know a right choice from a wrong. In the end it is your choice anyways. I don't think that there is only one for each person. As others have stated I think that you can have more than one throughout your life. As I think that I may have started with one, but at this point I have more than that! I don't think your spirit guide would ever be evil, or bad. In the case that they are evil, then they are not your guide, but just a passing by spirit to which you have caught their attention & they decide to play with you, but you should not feel at ease with them, therefore, you would know the difference.
To answer skylla's question~ Yes I think it is possible to have a guide & not know. I think you have to be open to it, otherwise you want know. I mean some people don't want to believe it's possible so they close themselves off to it, by doing that, they block the link that they would have with their guide.
I hope this doesn't come off sounding to nuts, maybe it's the native american side of me, but I have always just had some sort of interraction with mine.
Alright I get a snow night tonight so I can respond to some of this, aren't you all jumping for joy?
LI you were getting upset at repeating that Spirit guides were good and that I just wasn't getting it, now your tone changed to one that I would give more respect on, that it is your opinion that they are good and right.
I have yet to see you explain however how you would know that and be able to prove it without using faith or blind trust.
Billy said that we should use a trial and error approach of which I countered and suggested that it only would take one step for some people to fall off of some precipice and so maybe that wouldn't be exactly the best way to guage whether something is good or whether it was malevolant.
Another poster spoke towards our inside nature knowing if the entity was jiving with us or not. This would lead me to simply ask have your instincts always been correct? You have never had moments or time periods where you have chosen incorrectly? Wouldn't it be safe to assume that your inner being has been wrong on those times? We are still going with the faith and trust issue which isn't exactly comforting.
The Native american aspect was brought up again in the last thread I spoke of the Coyote, the Spider, and one I didn't mention the crow, all of which trickster elements and archetypes that are also known as shape shifters they could perfectly meld or blend in with what you wanted to hear or find out and look to be like something else.
I am simply not convinced that using these things is safe and a productive way to plan your lives around.
"Her suggestion on knowing who your guide is how they speak to you, if your guide ridicules you, puts you down or anything of the sort you know they are false. A true guide that is there to help you will be full of love and gentleness and will only help if you ask for it."
Again I don't buy it. You have never achieved advancement through some one that has mocked or ridiculed you? Someone that has challenged you by telling you that you couldn't do something knowing that your competative edge would make you fulfill your goal?
Martial artists often have this kind of treatment given to them to make them work harder simply to overcome the obstacle that someone of great importance told them to stop doing. Little girls who want to play sports while the little boys who tell them they can't, aspects such as this happen all the time, why would spirit guides be different?
You get toxic people who are full of love and gentleness that hinder your progress like the overbearing mother or father that dissallows certain activity that could strengthen their children for the fear that the kid will fail.
I just can't see this as being plausible.
I did mention the native americans, but I just meant it as maybe my senses are more aware due to this part of me. Like some of the others I have never seen them as animals! Evangius~ You do make some good points! If I saw them as animals, then maybe I would feel differently & question it more! You did add some great information & things to think about.
Yes some things that come to you can and will be bad in any number of ways some of which can be very unpleasant.
I had to read along way untill someone gave the answer which you alll were looking for and it was Billy.
When ever any thing [is what i will call them because they can be any number of things] Just come out and ask them are you from love and light they have to answer you thing but a yes is not a answer.
Many here have some very good points. I want to thank you all for this discussion.
As I have stated my belief is this that no a spirit guide isnt bad or harmful due to it being a higher form of yourself, yes I see it in an animus form because I like to do so.
Evangius this would mean then it would only harm you if you want to harm yourself. I think even the sickest of us in the world the most self destructive person doesn't want to harm themselves ulimately they want relief from interenal pain of some sort.
This means it isnt an outside entity but yourself your dealing with..
I am again not native american so I havent been trained in there ways. I know some myths and stories I have been told by the native people I have known.
I didn't start this thread to belittle any ones beliefs we are all entitled to believe the way we want or were raised to believe in a certain manner or tradtion.
I don't think the waters are any more muddied then I may have already made them.
I want to thank al that have so far participated in this thread it is a very exciting discussion even if our points of view dont match..
Then if they did where would the discussion be????
No one knows for sure, but one can never go on the assumption that it is harmful. Some just want to help or guide, others may have no idea.
I know because I know the difference between right and wrong. I have the common sense to morally judge my own actions and feelings. If my guide were some "Evil" being set to harm myself or loved ones, I'd catch on to that.
I'd love to see more in here sharing there beliefs..
Feel free to discuss this topic openly as you see it lets stay on the topic which is how to know if a spirit is being misleading or not..
Lets avoid flamming of others(memebers) not the topic at hand I would love to have a healty and lively discussion on this topic. I love others points of view and welcome them here
well i feel that i have a spirit that travels with me i feel it is the spirit of my long dead brother (RIP) but he only seems to make himself known to me when i am in need in some way even if it is just for me to know he is there watching over me i think that is the only way i no he is never out to harm any one i know
You can always ask if it means to harm you or not. Maybe it will even answer you.
Native Americans have a being they refer to as The Trickster( I had to dig deep to some anthropology classes I took many years ago) , this entity would try to live up to it's name. Sometimes it is hard to tell
Good Point LordFangor I have heard about those spirits as well I wish somemore of our native americans here would come in and talk about this issue as I am sure they have much more info then I do about it
In my opinion, spirit guides can come in all shapes and sizes, all different forms, I think they are souls that don't want to live in a body but want to take other souls and lead them in a certain path wether it be good or bad, right or wrong
Wow. Some really great discussion here.
I was raised in one of those radical religions where anything outside of Jesus and the bible were of the devil, no matter what good things they led you towards.
So, for a while I went along with the idea that tarot and meditative spirit guides are only a means of interpreting what you see on the cards or in your dreams in a way that aligns with what is in your subconsious, or what is inspired by god, your higher self or supreme being.
Then as I grew older I found more and more ideas that I agreed with, chopra, native american, hinduism, etc. and its left me asking the same question that Mikhail posted above.
Given that there is a big gap in my understanding here, (like isn't the holy spirit a spirit guide? and how exactly would he/she/it appear? and how would you know....) I'm going to have to go with Billy on this one.... the "Ye shall know them by their fruits" quote.
Of course this leaves a lot to be interpreted about the philosophical guardian angel, Murmur as described in the lesser key of Solomon....
I think the answer is, There is no answer. The world is not black and white. It is said that even the Coyote or the Pookah will lead you towards growth in sometimes a painful/embarrassing or non-traditional manner.
I think that perhaps you just have to have a good enough foundation, basic moral values, internal compass, and support structure to know when you are in real harm's way.
Here Here Skylla and Pookahchu we do have to trust our own inner values. We learn some of these from society some well mine came to me seeing different things and meeting people with different ideas then mine I incorperated many traditions and values I liked into my life.
I think when I talk to my guides they mean me no harm they are a tool for learning like any other...
i believe that everyone does have a spirit guid at some point and time in there life.....the guids are usually there to help you when you need them..... i think lown and billy said it pretty clearly...... its the same as knowing if a person is good or not..... if it dont feel right then its usually not a spirit guid .... i think all in all one can tell the diffrence if put in that possition.....
I was hoping for more of our native friends in here and have others see more of there tradtions perhaps my question scared them off I'm not sure I hope we can have more in her tonight and find out there thoughts
OK i'm going to dive into this from the perspective of a student of shamanism and native both(well part native), also I have NOT read the thread, i'm going by the question only, i'll read the thread after
It is my understanding that the way we view a spirit animal/guide/totem comes from within, we see of them what makes us comfortable with them, as their entire reason for being there at that time is to help you or fulfill a need, as far as my teachings have gone THEY choose to come to you, but then you have to choose to accept them after that and so you see them in the ways you need to.
as to whether they could be an evil entity?
it is entirely a possibility, but people have a far stronger sense of intuition while journeying the other worlds, where such visionquests take you, and so the likelihood of something deceiving you there is greatly lessened(not non-existant)
the world, either spirit or physical is NOT in fact a safe place, we always need to remember that when dealing with both other people, and external entities.
hope that digs the right buttons
now maybe i'll read the thread
Well being Native I have been told by a elder that my Mother spirit animal is a butterfly and my father spirit animal is a moose. OK great combo but that is how it goes. Sense Im not in mutch contact with a moose Im not sure if there drawn to me but as for the butterfly I know they are. During times of pain I have had butterfly's fly into my home and plant themselves on the ceiling above me for days on end. When I am outside they land on me and hang out. It is very cool.
Yeah Skylla I had been but it took off and many questions as I see it have been answered and I am also glad that a number of our native american members have talked to us about how they see this subject
