What defines a familiar and how are they obtained? well i already answered part of this with help from websters online dictionary... SO... a familiar (in the sense of it being an animal) can be obtained in any way. You could simply find it, purchase it (which is sad), adopt it... whatever. I believe that no matter how it is obtained, it is the instant relationship one has with the animal that brings its full purpose in your life to your attention.
Do you currently have a familiar or have you ever had one? I believe I have one. My cat, Shitster (He has a big ego, what can I say?). This cat is with me all the time when I am home and doesnt leave my side unless he has to do his business. He is my best friend, and I confide in him very much. I am not a practitioner, so his only purpose is being my fluffy little kindred spirit (who happens to think he's married to me or something... strange cat.)
How did you know it is or was a familiar? This cat just waits for me to come home every night, he won't shut up when Im here, he has to be with me at all times. He HATES it when the other animals come near me. He has to sleep with me, under the covers. When I talk to him, he talks back. He knows when I'm happy, sad, etc.... he's just always there for me.
I believe in familiars, I've had two. Both black labs. The first one was a neighbor's puppy who happened to find his way to my porch. I came home from work and there he was. I let him in thinking he would sniff around and play. He just laid there. I called the neighbors to let them know that their puppy was at my house and that if they wanted him to come and get him. They said they didn't want him that he was dying. I was ticked off that they would let this animal suffer, so I proceeded to call a vet and got the puppy in right away. He had parasites and was given a shot and some meds for me to give to him. I took him home and named him Rocky because of the way his butt swayed when he walked. He got better and became my companion for 13 years when he passed away.
It took me 5 years to even think about getting another dog but in the end, I chose another black lab, a female this time because she came up to me from the litter and started licking my shoes...lol...Her name is Rayne after BloodRayne and she is around me a lot and protects me from a lot of things and even certain people....
I am of the opinion that familiars are animals that are used in magick rituals or castings as a source of a guiding soul to anchor then move your spell through into the stream. may be wrong but a lot of documentation I have says such. but then I guess if an animal brings you good peace of mind it is doing a kind of magick all on its own and could also be classed as a familiar.
the question then is do you truly believe in magick :)
I do believe in familiars but have yet to find mine. My fiance has his already. A nineteen year old cat named Cho. They've been together since they were both babies. Cho doesn't seem to get older though which really bothers me. I don't know why but it does. There's a picture of Cho in my portfolio.
Thats a good point... and yes I do. Ancient Egyptians believed that animals (mostly dogs and cats) were in the middle, that their souls were both living and not... a portal, if you will. Take Anubis, for example. They praised animals because they viewed them as a source of magic. So yes, I do believe in magic and I also believe that even if one does not practice it, their familiar works it for them, so to speak.
all resposnes are correct so far...my familiar is a kitty...he always is jabberin stuff to me.. we call him "the energy whore" ya outta see him when I'm doing Reiki on somebody..he has to be in the middle of everything,,lol
I don't know allot about familiars, but I think that my cat may be mine. He's an insanely smart cat and when I talk to him he responds appropriately. He's usually very friendly, but there have been people he's growled and hissed at. One of those people was a guy who turned out to be a predator that had lied about where he was living.
Anyway's he's very protective and attentive to me and my family despite the fact that I'm not always the best pet owner.
Yes I do believe in them but I do not currently have one.
Relate this to Vampires, The occult, etc... or I am deleting this thread.
This discussion has NOTHING to do with this website thus far.
I hate to take this punch... please don't peg me for being a smartass, I'm really not trying to sass anyone.
I think that familiars have everything to do with the occult, seeing as they are often used as a window of sorts. HOWEVER... I do think that discussing our individual familiars and telling stories about them has nothing to do with this site (and I apologize for adding to it)... so perhaps we should discuss how our familiars have helped us with things pertaining to the occult, vampirism, etc...
The closest thing I have experienced is with my spirit guides. In the Native belief we have animals that try to convey messages to us from our ancestors to help guide us through life.
I belive that familiars are real, I used to have one, it was in the form of my bird, it guarded me to no end, always on my shoulder. I realy loved that bird.
A familiar is a demon or imp who appears as an animal. Usually a small animal
Athough I am very connected to Koalas', they are a lot like me or in my opinion. They are cute and cuddly on the outside, but very vicious on the inside. Not easy creatures to get close to, plus they are nocturnal. I would consider a Koala more so my animal totem. My cat RainShadow is my familiar and guardian. I dreamt about him long before I got him, he is always with me. So I would consider him my familiar.
My Husky 'Steele' is my familiar.
He talks to me and also can sense how I am feeling and what my mood is.
His pictture is on my portfolio
Fortunate Fool hit it on the head.....good thing for Websters lol.
Thats what I meant fortunate. But so far this thread discussion is going nowhere.
Yes, I fully believe in them.
I honestly believe my cat is mine. He choose me one day by just walking into my house. He lets me know when things are wrong. And he likes moving things around on my Altar.
I am a familiar - look at my profile..LOL
A good book on familiars is:
Familiar Spirits: A Practical Guide for Witches and Magicians, by Donald Tyson.
According to the book, familiars are called for a specific set of tasks. You call the familiar through a system of glyphs which form a sigil that becomes the essence of the familiar and it forms it name.
The example in the book is
"Reveal and Bring the occult texts I require", which is digested to RBOTIR and forms the name "Rabbit Ear". Then you choose different glyphs according to the system in the book to form the sigil. After, you conduct a ritual, then the familiar should appear to you. It could be stray cat or a bird, or a new friend.
There is more to the book. The author lists some real names of familiars from actual witch trials:
Jack
Tom
Ball
Lightfoot
Rorie
Makeshift
Holt (white kitten)
Jamara (a fat spaniel)
Vinegar Tom (gyeyhound that turned into a headless child and ran off before the authorities could capture him as evidence)
Sacke and Sugar (black rabbit)
Newes (polecat)
Three little people kept in different bottles (Big Dick, Little Dick, and Willet)
Suckin - black dog
Lyerd - red lion
Tyffin - black lamb
Pigin - a black toad
Tittey - gray cat
Jack - black cat
never had the chance of having one.. hmmmm... i could really use one at this time though.. ha ha ...... and i would say it was a creature always close to you t o help you or protect you in wha tways it could
Yes, i believe that they choose you and the first time you see the one meant for you, you both feel a connection. I believe they are meant to protect you and feel more than normal animals do about there owners. I have two and they are my loves.
I do believe in familiars, they can be found in many ways.. bought adopted or just showing up .i have a cat i have had since she was 6 weeks old and she is two now
My dog Juno just passed yesterday after 16 wonderful years. She was without a doubt my familar and I feel empty to think she is gone.
pepper man your the man much to learn from you. and much to test as well. will remeber that. and check the books.
Yes I believe in familiars. I have two actually. The only time I commune with them is in the dream scape. They are a great help with guiding me and keeping me safe. They found me as it normally should be. One does not pick there familiar it choses you.
oh and for the record tom came to me by supprise and we have pack dreamt many times. though I dont like useing him for magick as such only once have I and I think out of respect I will leave it as such. so what you say pepper fits well. I would like to say I truly feel for Zodiacstwins if I was to loose tom it would nearly kill me.
i really don't know what to believe when it comes to familiars, i know that a familiar is supposed to be like a guide that has taken a living breathing form. my cat is a familiar, i believe this because one, he should have been killed three times now and has still survived. and two, there's just something about him when he's sitting on my lap or when i'm petting him, some weird comforting force about him.
One of my rats seems to be a bit more connected to me than the other 3, but I don't know if that is just her individual personality. My cat is definitely not Familiar material, she barely even comes near me! But there's hope for my snake I guess....
I have 2 familiars, one a lovely white female cat, found in a crummy little bar, being passed from owner to owner for nearly 2 weeks, (she was only 5 weeks when I found her) named Shiva. At first I had no idea that she was sent to me as a familiar, and she is totally deaf. But when she sees me working in my circle, or chanting, or even just meditating, she is always right there, she purrs along and is a most welcome support during work and play. My other familiar is a gray and white rat with a lighning bolt stripe down the left side of his face. He visits me somewhat often, he roams freely in my house. At first, I assumed that he was my former roomates rat, but then I noticed that Shiva won't eat him. She has no problems eating other rodents etc... but she has never even pounced towards that rat. I don't know where he came from, but he is a wonderful communicator, he talks to me in little rat chirps, enjoys friendship and cooperative energy work between myself, him, and my cat (he hardly ever misses my full moons), and he even lets me hold him every now and then. I love my familiars.
i know they are real. i have three of them. my loveing cats
FortunateFool, thank you for the additional definement of a familiar along with your insight. I do agree with your assessment.
My previous dog was definitely my familiar. I got him at a pound, saved him from execution, and from that point on he and I connected to the point we read one another's minds. He was definitely my protector and friend.
yes, i believe in familiars and I have had several.
I had 2 black cats, satan and salem they were highly intelligent, often helping me in my daily practices. They have magical abilities on thier own, and lend thier magic to spells and rituals as well.
Often if a spell I cast did not work, and i recast it while they were around, it often took root, so to speak.
I began to notice they were familiars when they picked me as thier mistress, I guess and if things didnt go right while they were not there, but did work when they were, that was my clue. They also tended to want to be with me, like they CHOSE me. They were also pretty much hostile to other people, and seemed to only want me to touch them.
I forgot to mention I have a great empathy to sense what animals are thinking and feelling as well, a gift from my mother's line. No, I am not Dr. Doolittle, thank you, lol. But animals seem to like me and trust me as well, even those animals who do not like or trust humans at all. Its like I can see into thier minds and hearts thru thier eyes and they can see into mine.

Do you currently have a familiar or have you ever had one?
A. Yes I have. It was a full blooded American Boxer. She was just about 1 year old ( human ) when me and her come to crossing paths. The thing I miss about this dog is she could almost read my mind.
She would give her owner a hard time untill I would come over. Once I would see her she would calm down and truly try to tell me things In her own way. After 8 months of getting to know this animal to whom was my familar. She quit eating after I stop coming over. After about a month the dog finally started to have a so called normal eating cycle. I miss the dog more than I miss people out of my past.
I believe that there are familiars. And yes the are usually spirits embodied in animal for to protect the person. Mine is a doberman and very protective

You raise a good point. In the world of mysticism, vamyrism, and the occult I had never previously heard of a human/person being a familiar. I found your post to be interesting. Also, I would like to thank "Fortunate" for trying to keep this post more in the realm of what I expected.
I do believe in familiars....my Cat Dartanyan....always finding my keys I've misplaced, watching over my children, alerting me to people coming...many other things....he was my protector, my friend and my family...and now deeply missed....
Do you believe in familiars? yes I do
What defines a familiar and how are they obtained? I personally think it's a connection between you and "it" They choose you
Do you currently have a familiar or have you ever had one? Yes I have one, or he has me I should say lol. His name is Onyx and he's on my portfolio.
How did you know it is or was a familiar? The way he presented himself to me and how he is my virtual shadow. And he always seems to keep me from harms way.
Oh, what the hell... as it is unlikely this will be understood by anyone...
Vampiric familiars do not at all resemble by definition those ascribed to witches and witchcraft (i.e., spirits/demons in animal form).
In actual "vampirism" as actually existed anciently before they were vilified and forced to "separate themselves" (as per the Bible: Jude v. 19), and become "wandering stars" (ibid. v. 13), the term "familiars" had a very specific meaning.
For the true vampire (i.e., those of the Rephaimic bloodline and in possession of the true "Dark" Gift), familiars are human females who have had their full insatiable eroto-emotional potentials fully awakened by a Rephaimic male possessing equal sensual and emotional capacity. As such a singularly powerful awakening for a heterosexual female is possible only through days'-long communal bonding together with her "vampire" sire, she attains therein a hunger and thirst previously unimagined, and one that through and with him alone she can find fully though temporarily quenched. She then is privileged to become one of his most intimate companions, his "familiar" with whom he will forever continue to feed... and be fed by her, in return.
Ironically, one of the best definitions of "familiar" as most closely describes the term in true vampirism is found in Roman Catholicism's own website: www.newadvent.org:
There, "Familiars" are defined as: "Strictly speaking, seculars subject to a master's authority and maintained at his expense. In this sense the idea embodies service rendered to masters, as well as wages, board, and lodging provided by the masters. In canon law the term usually signifies seculars residing in monasteries and other religious houses, actually employed therein as servants and subject to the authority of the regular prelate to the same extent as servants are subject to their masters. Many of the privileges and exemptions granted to religious are accorded their familiars. For this reason familiars validly receive absolution from a confessor approved by the regular prelate, or from one approved by the ordinary of the place where the house is located. In like manner, familiars actually dwelling in a monastery may receive their Easter Communion in the church or chapel of the monastery. Extreme unction and Viaticum may also be administered to them in the monastery. Boys boarding in colleges or academies supervised by religious or by diocesan clergy, and girls boarding in convents conducted by sisterhoods, practically enjoy the same privileges as familiars."

While the above definition, being here a religious term, is obviously not the same as it applies in true Rephaimic "vampirism," yet there are many striking parallels.
A true "Familiar" is neither slave nor free; she is a voluntary devotee -- heart, body, and soul -- to him who rebirthed her, who awakened her to her full true potentials by possessing within himself (as normal mortal males do not) all such capacities fully matured as usually lie dormant, unknown, unexperienced, and thus untapped, in almost all females.
UpirLikhyj is spot on as always with the technicalities. I think many are confused about the differences between the many forms of familiars.
the word Vampire familiar was not in the question..I believe the questioner was referring to witch familiars..You must remember that most here are not vampyre, which is fine. We welcome all for their interest.
So yes, there are familiars.
Right, so we're speaking of Familiars in general... Well, to answer the questions, yes, I believe in familiars. Yes, I have one, a wolf. Now, the 2 other questions are a bit harder to answer in just a few words, so i'm just going to provide a few links which helped me:

wow. i believe that we do have something looking over us. and it could be a familiar or a angel etc.
i think it is quite cool to think of.
words and terms evolve. just because it was thought to occur in ancient egypt, doesnt make it any truer or falser that individuals believe they have familiars that oversee their wellbeing.
to answer the question... i am not sure. i have animals that would probably give their life to protect mine...
In early modern English witchcraft, a familiar spirit, commonly called familiar (from Middle English familiar, related to family) or imp is a spirit who obeys a witch, conjurer, or other users of the supernatural, and serves and helps that person. Although they may not be as intelligent as their masters, they are often as intelligent as the average human. Familiars often perform domestic duties and help in farming, but also aid the person in bewitching people. If they look like ordinary animals, they can be used to spy on their masters' enemies. These spirits are also said to be able to inspire artists and writers (compare with muses). Some reclusive wizards rely on familiars as their closest friends.
i believe in familars, in fact i have a couple. I don't think i was the one to find them, i believe they came to me when they felt i was ready for them
i believe that familiars do exist for some and not for others i to keep them in the form of dogs however i dont view them as familiars..
I wanted to thank everyone for their responses. This has been a fascinating and enlightening coversation.
