Let's branch off a little bit. This isn't about young versus old, and I don't really think it ever was. Maybe I'm wrong.

I think the big picture issue I'm getting at here is how younger generation of gothic people is turning out. I think a lot of us are just following in the footsteps of those before us, but it would seem that a lot have taken on a rather anti-social downright rude personna.

So the question is, what do you think the future holds for us? Not just on VR,but in the world as well. I mean with the "attitude" that seems to be defining his generation, "is the fututre so bright we gotta wear shades"? Or do we "run away (run away)"

The future for this site, or for the gothic and vampire culture today? This is a tough question to answer either way, because it is hard to predict the future, but based on past events we can guess.

IN the 6th century, goth was about architecture and art, then it was about music and now it is clothing and a little bit of attitude. I'm afraid that with the way the culture is going, we will submerge into lesser cultures such as emo and scene. That is just with what I am noticing on here and expecially on vampirefreaks. I think we as a group, need to take more responsibilty in making sure our culture doesnt get lost in all the fakness of the world.

I think with time and age, the "new" generation will mellow out. I imagine a lot of us were crazier when we were younger.

And really, if all they are doing is mouthing off online... they could be doing a lot worse. I know I was :)

very insightful discussion and exchange. i know that when i was younger i was very exhuberant and went overboard wanting to impress everyone with what i knew (or thought i knew). i was pretty damn annoying

Lyssa: I agree that the issue was never really about young vs. old. As many people stated in the various threads, there are a lot of young people who act more than mature for their age, and many adults that act like they just came from the nursery, lol.

As someone who considers himself "goth", it's hard to say where the culture is headed. Personally, I'm always thinking about the world in general is headed, and to be honest ... I don't have a good feeling, lol. But that's another topic altogether, I suppose.

But getting back to the goth culture, it does appear that attitude seems to rule goths, yes - almost as if they feel they have to act this way to be gothic. Myself, I've been told before that I "can't be goth" because I'm "all happy" (which is very far from the truth, but when I'm around others I tend to be, lol). So I suppose that may say something about how others perceive goths.

GOth shouldn't be about the attitude though, that is not how it was started. GOth shouldn't even be about the clothes and trend that goes along with the word, because you can be goth and not dress that way.

Goth should be about the music, the love for the culture, the love of darkness and vampires.

What was goth like in the days of old??? I'd like to hear this from an older person so that I can be filled in, then I can better tell what might happen.

i am a little tired of visiting profiles looking for interesting and fresh outlooks or stories, and getting mostly the sentiment "this is me; if you don't like it fuck you". thinking they are being original, cutting edge or goth.

I've always had a dark mindset for as long as I can remember, but didn't actually start dressing goth until a few years ago.

Heh, yeah! As much as I don't want to admit it. I was probably pretty annoying or bitchey not too far back, just thinking it was part of being goth. LOL

You know the thing is, for the longest time I fell out of the goth culture, and once I joined VR I got into it all over again. And it's for good this time too. So I guess I missed most of the "fuck you" phase.

And I'm not a star hun, I just post too much to my own damn threads! LOL

When I got into goth in the lat 80's, it was much different. hot topic did not exist. if you wanted to dye your hair, it was a huge ordeal (or you used Kool-aid!).

Piercings were rare, tattoos too. Any of these things was often a cause for fear and violence from others, at least here. Harassment by authority figures was common.

Now there's a sort of mainstream aspect to it. That isn't bad. When I first started with my punky-dress, I was just emulating what I saw too. No big deal. Now you can actually find popular goth clubs.

It seems to have changed a couple of times since then, first into more industrial, and now there's a lot more VNV-like EBM music. I like it all.

The people have changed too. I have friends in their 40's and 50's who dance right alongside the 19 year olds.

There are cycles to things. What is 'old skool' to each of us will be seldom heard of by those to come.

I still think of it though as a mindset. If we all wore uniforms, worldwide, there would still be differences. Its the differences we should embrace, because its the spice of life.

Skully- thanks for the quick history lesson. It's weird, like you said piercings tattoos and dyed hair were rare, and now all it is is these kins of things that catagorize goth. It's sad how the culture went downhill. I wish it was still the eighties. Althought I was only i the decade for a year, I do love the bands and such that came out of that perios. If only we could make good music like that. I know this is almost a whole new topic, but it's hard to imagine that music used to be good.

as far as the culture getting swallowed up, i think that's bound to happen... looks and music get intertwined and cross over after a while
it is a state of mind though, and i think that will always distinguish it from others

raynne, yes it is a state of mind, but it is pathetic when there are 13 year olds faking goth just by dressing in black and knowing nothing of the culture. SO even tho it is a personal choice, there are some who take advantage of the whole culture.

I've heard all kinds of stories from people who were goths in the 80's... I wish I could have been a goth then too. It would have kicked ass!

What is Goth ? It seems to be different things to different people, some think of it as a dress code and others an attitude.

To me it is useless going back in time, how far back are you going to go ? Once upon a time a Goth was a warrior tribe.

Much like he term 'vampire' has been adopted by various groups of people to mean different things through the ages [lets not go there] so has Goth.

The word 'Goth' is evolving through time - to me it seems to be evolving into an emo fashion statement

you are right, that's a huge downside when something becomes a little more mainstream. but often the fakers aren't that hard to spot
i liken it to people here who are just here to make trouble.. you know who they are and can pick out the ones who just don't know

it's become very popular to be 'goth' on the outside but it shouldn't stop there

they are just in the beginning stages of what culture they see themselves belonging too. So they may go overboard and dress in all black with lots of pale foundation and black eyeliner... But their just learning. Hopefully in time theyll start reading the literature and music that has shaped gothic culture.

Plus i know plenty of adult who know the literature and archetecture and such but still dress in all black and have a bit of an attitude.

With all of the fakers, comes the fact that there are real people, real goths. And sometimes expecially in high school and college you can be associated with the fakes, you can be called names and called a posure, but the thing that differentiates us from them, is that we dont give a fuck, and the fakes, they know they are fake and they make a big deal about it.

even people who belong to a certain group, or feel they do are still individuels
so it makes sense to me that there will be differences in how people express themselves even in that culture
i use myself as an example. most people classify me as 'goth' which i don't mind, but i don't look goth at all. i used to dress that way but i don't anymore (for reasons i've stated in another thread)
it does make sens that someone who is just embracing a lifestyle to almost over the top in their enthusiasm and as they learn and grow comfortable with it they tone it down
i have a close friend that when he came out of the closet (so to speak) he made sure everyone knew it
now he's much more reserved, but that's not because he's changed, he's just gotten to the point where he's comfortable and doesn't need to scream 'i'm gay' anymore

Right on MCRGurl16! I remember when I was the only person in my school to have a spike belt or bracelet... The only person to where fishnets... LOL. that was a long time ago. Now I can't walk down a hallway without bumping into some four foot nothing with a a purple Mohawk and pierced whatever. Okay, I don't know if anyone at my school has a Mohawk anymore, I think they all graduated sadly...

Where did you get the idea to wear a spiked bracelet or fishnets? You obviously got it from somewhere and possibly imitating others that you felt represented a culture you wanted to belong to (or believed you did belong to)

That is all these kids are doing... Nothing different than what you did. So what if its more mainstream, that is impart due to you dressing that way 5 or 10 years ago...

I personally don't really like the whole young Goth attitude. I agree with Vamp3434.
I have what could be considered a 'Gothic' state of mind since I was about 10 but have only started dressing 'Gothic' in the last 2 years.
I think I am more mature than most people my age so I don't fall into the steriotypes that alot of people do. I like to dress exactly how I want, listen to what ever I choose and act in what ever way I see fit. That is something that I am happy with and is a part of me.
I don't see myself as original but I'm just who I am. I try not to be something I'm not.
But I do realise there is a certain steriotype of the young Goth today though.

Meeper, to answer your question. I got it form my aunt. She influenced me so much when I was young that I wanted to be just like her, dress like her, all that. And my other aunt (another goth from the 80's) just kind of helped me along.

the point is you were imulating someone which is exactly what these kids are doing today... they might not have an aunt who is a goth, but they have others around them and idols that dress and act a certain way.

What I am getting at, we cannot hold them to a higher standard then what we can pass ourselves.

I get what you're saying Meeper. But today being goth is considered "bad ass". When people my age and older started it was taboo. Not to mention when I started I didn't magically adopt this "fuck you" attitude either. And again, it isn't all young goths!

It's going to get worse and worse, it's inevitable.

I've actually had a hard time with emo peeps. They're hostile toward me, and all I do is walk down the street.

Fortunately I can puff up and look venemous.

I agree it is not just kids who incorporate that attitude.

But when you were going against the grain of society by wearing gothic style clothes, you were kind of making a nonverbal statement. Perhaps these F-you style goths are just add a voice to what the culture class has always represented.

personally my friends and i never had a 'f-you' attitude to anyone... but then we always thought it was better to be yourself whoever that was so didn't have issues with people who thought, dressed or acted different than we did
and honestly i hung out with all kinds of different people
but maybe we were the exception and not the rule

Well I do think that gothic individuals will become even more anti-social because look at how our would is today..screwed up...I'm not a goth, necessarily, but I do think that goths are the true individuals who have great ideas to fix our screwed up world, or at least the ones I've talked to...

Young people especially have been taught that going against the social norms is something that is 'bad'. There is no "true goth" any more- all thats left is imitation. The vast majority- and I mean no offense with this- of the gothic following nowadays does not know the difference between punk, gothic, emo of scene kids... They lump it all together into one category and think "cool I'm gonna call myself this today"
It's sad...
The future is terrible. We're a generation of fakes. We're a generation of misguided youths who are for the most part- to stubborn to be put on the right track..

I have had a lot of contact with many youth over the past several years, my daughter's friends in high school and college, and my 13 yo son's friends.

I think the majority of youth are no different than youth have been for a long time. I can remember when I was a teen and the rebelious attitude I had. But I still could carry on an intellegent conversation and new how to act in public and around my elders. I predominantly see the same thing with today's youth.

I am pessimestic because I see the future everyday at school- and its unintelligent, immature, uncaring... its sad..
I hope you are right- that its just simply what I've been seeing- that our future isn't hopeless- but I really don't know

Perhaps, Lupa, the issue is that your level of maturity has advanced past that of many of your school mates!

I often shake my head sometimes at the things young people say and do, but, looking back I and my friends did and said similar crap "back in the day".

meeper you say we all copy someone (or seen what whe ware from someone you get the point) not all treu ok fackt I wear those bracelets and I get some ideas from other ones but then again I wear armor pieces as wel and that I copy from nobody cause I am the onley one here that wears an armored vest as an jacked or uses a real medieval cape when its cold
most of us give what we wear a personal touch(like me by using real armor) and lot of the youth just wares what they see another one has on, and they wil prob need to adjust it but many are just copycats knowing not what to do with theier live and not knowing themself 100%, and I don't blame them cause whe where all like that

We all have personal touches but its a combination of something that has already been done before... its the whole argument that there are no new ideas. everything has been done before etc...

The culture has just become more prevalent due to new forms of media exposure.

In the 80's and early 90's, goth was predominantly a word of mouth and live club culture. There were few if any movie characters that incorporated the culture (and none of them done well). Goth music received little or no airplay on the radio until crossover bands like Manson or NIN hit MTV. Music was heard through club dj's and live shows. One could argue that there was a slight nod to goth with bands like Depeche Mode or Morrisey or SoftCell but it was a tenuous link that really couldn't handle too much direct attention. And even their influence in media was still alternative/fringe at first.

So now we have the internet and we have gone through a solid generation of crossover bands on MTV and movies have depicted goths with much more flair or style and grace. We've even had TV charaters on weekly shows that pulled off a pretty decent job though always exagerated.

All of this will mean more goths, and more superficial exposure to it. So you'll get a number of people who weren't part of a counter culture but merely emulating something from POPULAR culture. Are the effects negative? Maybe a little disconcerting for one from the earlier years. It's hard to accept that a counter culture has become mainstream but that doesn't imply that the creative influence and style won't survive and be stronger for it.

im currently in the middle between youth and age. i've mellowed out some so my opinion would be: yes things change, but o so slowly

Meeper, you don't believe people are original do you? That's just sad really. Look, I do not want to be just like everyone else. No one wants to be... So please, saying my generation and my style has all been done before and unoriginal is BS. Plain and simple. Each generation adds its own flare, its own trademark. Yeah, the idea isn't original, but the way in which we present it is.

Hmmmm...it's hard to say. I think we can be "goth" and still have a normal life. Young and old. Since goth seems to be labeled as the ones who study alternative practices or have an interest in what others do not find "normal"...even though they can wear the same clothes and act the same in other ways. I wouldn't say we're doomed...I would think that all of this is helping to open up the world more, and introduce other cultures...for those accepting of them. Not having all the strict guidelines and breaking down other walls.

Absolutely Rogue, I agree with that one. I do consider myself a goth. And no, it's not just because I wear a lot of black. I read goth literature, listen to goth music, and in general I really enjoy darker things. However, I am not an outcast or a freak at school. I am friends with some very popular "preppy" people. It's a lifestyle kind of thing I suppose...

But getting down to it, there are to many people in the world to just say oh I'm different and this is some type of style that no one else has.

Yeah, it certainly isn't different. But the way everyone applies it their life is unique... I'm getting off topic though.

Well, I think the future of the goth future will be good. I mean, I think we'll lose some of our identity sure, but every culture/lifestyle does eventually.

Each generation itself is different, but actually, we are doing the same things-- we're only trying to satisfy ourselves, and have a good time. However, each new generation seems to have a more twisted view of fun... but that's all a matter of perspective! :)

To be honest, I am not a clairvoyant or soothsayer, so I have NO idea what the future will hold for this new gothic generation, but I do know that we make it for ourselves.

I guess I am kinda caught in the middle of things I find that the young gen. is rude and dirty and just plan disrespectful but I find that the older gen is to stoggie.... I guess I live in the middle ground. The young need to grow up and the old lighten up.... We need to all leard to accept each other for who we are and stop being so petty..

I am young and I have to say that it is not all of the young "people" that are soo bad it is just the really bad ones that get seen. So yes I do think that some of us need to mellow out but as far as VERY one saying that all us do I don't think that is right . TO me it is the person that has a say in what the world has for us. If you take it with two hands and is just rude then you will get rudeness, but if you take it by two hands and take it one day at a time I think that people will see that not all of us are bad. I am a "younging" and I have to say- this generation- in my opinion isn't doing anything that hasn't already been done before. We're copying every other style that has already been seen- only we're mixing them- big deal.
We've become unoriginal (again in MY OPINION) we've become a bunch of sheep really... and that sad.

I have to say that I see a lot of repetativeness in todays films and music. There are so many remakes and part 2,3,4,5 films that it appears that they really can't find many original ideas.

I also argue all the time with my kids about music. The Goth / Dark music scene is one exception where originallity still flourishes. However in mainstream rock it seams every week a remake of a song that was popular way back when I was growing up is released.

Why did they have to get Pearl Jam to re-do Love, reign o'er me? What the hell was wrong with The Who??

Everyday a new member joins, young or old it makes no difference. I think in order to preserve what we have, we need to understand for alot of people they are here to find those of lilke minds and interests. There are some that come and just have no clue. It is our responsiblity to weed out those that just are drama queens and are in need of attention. Placing labels on people or persuming to know who and what they are just by the sites they join is futile. I like it here, I have found a place to come to talk with others like me. These true places are hard to find.

I believe that our culture is being disgraced and degraded because of not the younger generation but because they are not being taught, for the most part a lot of the younger generation thinks that its just a fashion statement and has no history or culture to it whatsoever. I believe that the future of vampire rave is much more secure than that of vampirefreaks.com but i believe that VR will play a key part in the education and resurrection of our culture.

I must admit though that until they seek the information themselves they may not learn and the future may indeed be a bleak one, and not in a good way. I was the same as them until I came to VR and learned so much from all of the wonderful members on the site.

Education is a huge thing. I agree the younger generation for the most part do and say things just to gain attention, or be rebellious.

I know there are many members of the Gothic community in my area that try to educate and inform the younger folks of the true nature of the Goth culture.

There is a weekly all ages event near here, where some good interaction takes place.

But VR is an amazing community on-line and much learning and mentoring can and does take place here.

You are, of course, correct VelvetRose. It's knowledge, experience and maturity that matter. And, sadly, maturity does not always come with age.

I stated in ONE of the threads today that many of the younger folks on VR act more mature than the adults.

I applaud you on your grades. They really do matter for your future, if showing up your parents are what motivates you...That's great.

To clarify I did not mean to imply that it is the age that matters, far from it iIm 17 years old and respect the aspects of the Gothic culture and what it stands for, your right that its not youth vs aged but i did not mean to imply that nor do i believe it, it is as you said it was.

I think that there really is an attitude that the younger goths have most have no respect for anything or anyone even themselves so the future is looking not bright to me

I actually miss the day of Kool-Aid dyed hair.. Though I was afraid to do so in my neighborhood. I was already being beaten up for being a white kid in a minority area..

the kool aid thing i remember that i had a lot of friends that would do the kool aid dye thing i dont know if they added anything or just the powder.

as with that i believe the goth now a days is just a phase like the rest of the phases. yes they do have more attitude but here in NY i know some of the kids that go goth and have the attitude and they want to be tough. the goths here if you are full goth not just oh I'm wearing pink today with black lips stick and nail polish. a good majority of them dont get bothered with. at one point some of them were teased in elementary school and then junior high came and went goth. the ones that used to pic on them are now afraid believing they have toughened up.

but the thing still stands on everyone and everything is different. i guess time will tell on were we go from here.

I consider myself Goth because of the way i think, feel and believe. To me being Goth is a way of life. It dressing the part is not a way of becoming more Goth then others. (i am very happy with my silver nike's thank you very much)

Goth, to me, represents the kind of free thinking that shows a lot of similarities with the 60's movement. We feel that everybody, as an individual has the right to do whatever they want as long as they don't hurt others. (Wiccan influence).

I think a lot of times you're probably being asked to prove yourself because of your age, not your intellect. Take it as a challenge in a good way. I'm sure most people don't mean any disrespect.

It's funny that you mention that. Our oldest daughter is a total fashinista. I think part of that is a bit of rebellion against her "wierd" parents. DAG buys a black leather coffin shapped purse. Our daughter goes and buys another Vera Bradly paisly purse!

A bunch of the kids I know through their parents try to be opposite. I know one couple who seem like total grown up hippies....their 17 y.o. son is Mr. Right Wing conservative!

I guess if you are in that situation you do feel the need to rebell SOME way!

the younger generation is just doing there thing, we did ours, so let them express their culture the way they want, I still express mine the way I want.....

I'm probably in over my head, but i wanted to respond. There are alot of fakers out there, but there are still intelligent, kind, goths out there to possible balance out the posers. i'm not really goth, but i dress differently, and becasue of that i get made fun of...and maybe that's why some of today's youth have adopted the f-u attitude. Also, just cause kids go out and dress in alot of black maybe they don't think they're goth, that could just be a lable given by someone else. I think the future loks bleek, but i don't think it's doomed. i think it'll be different. earlier in kthe thread a couple some one's stated how the deffinition of goth is changing. I think that is very true. People who once thought they belonged in the group goth....now have other options. there are punks, goths, emos and some many other sub cultures. It's more ok now to be different. Welll, the more i write, the more i'm thinking yeah, i'm am over my head. i guess i 'll just say, that yeah alot of today's youth is getting a really bad attitude. but, not all of it. there are still some intelligent non posers out there. more of them just neeed to be found.

plus it doesn't have to be just one... you can mix and match how you want to express yourself by taking a little from many to make a look that's all your own
i do believe that there are a lot of young intelligent people out there, in every generation there are people who make the young look unintelligent and bad.
but there are a lot of good and smart teenagers around here ;]

I think, this covers it a lot from my point of view. Hey, did you ever had your grandparents reading you a fairy tale or telling stories of the old days? How do you think the wisdom was passed in the times without no books and writing?
How do you think the "scene" and "culture" can be preserved or keeped anyways?
Yes, yes only by telling the younglings the tales and feelings of the old days. Teaching them to understand their history and origins will help them to see their future.

If trends keep up the way they are now, not just with the clothing culture, but with society in general... sadly enough to say... We're fucked.

No offense meant here, and I think I was a bit offensive in my thread a few days ago. I did not mean for it to be younder folks against older folks here.I was simply stating that the new prof.s i was reading where terribly rude and just plain childish.

And once again, no offense meant here.Most of the people I am seeing here, are here for the social aspect, which is cool.And not really vampires per say ie: sang or psi or both.So I really can't say as to what the younger generation of vampires are like.I have not met many here anyways that are sang or psi, but basically lifestylers and goths.which once again is cool, but it's all good.

Lyssa, darling you are more wise then most can see... And it really is more about maturity then age, again correct.
Alot of the world views the 'goth' community as anti-social, in most cases, that simply isnt true.
That also started the 'rude' view that most people have on the general goth stereo-type as well. So that ended up being the influence for the newer generation.... At least i my opinion..

Okay, I'm kind of hoping the new angry goths will perhaps mellow out a bit. but at the same time, I don't want them to! It's essential they psh the envelope, make sure they are heard! That's just part of being in the generation! Raise voices and make demands.

I can't help but think about what the old school OLD school goths said about the generation before me. You just have to look at how a society evolves. The old generation complains and cries we're doomed we're doomed and the new generation blasts a path for future generations. it's a paridigm shift, and this is the point of chaos. We bitch and complain, and in say five years, everything will be new and yeah, it will be different. But are we fucked? Most certainly not!
