I'm sure many have heard the old wives tale that basically states that if one dreams of dying, they may actually die in their sleep. The reason I bring this up for discussion is that I for one have obviously not died of a dream ;) but I have had dreams that I can somewhat feel. For instance, I'd be suffocating in a dream and wake up very short of breath as though it were reality. Does anyone subscribe to this little superstition? Do you think it possible for the mind to take over matter in such a way? What do you think would trigger dreams such as this? Why do you think this came to be? Do you know or have you heard a story behind this?
I just posted something about this in the Sandbox and asked the exact same question basically, lol.
I find it very strange that I can dream and "almost" die in my dream, but as soon as I'm about to die I wake up. Kind of makes you wonder.
Of course, I haven't remembered a dream of mine in about 8 years now. I also find that kind of strange. Does someone just stop dreaming? They say we dream every night and will only remember bits and pieces here and there.
Well, i personally don't believe it because I got decapitated in my dream once and I was walking around headless. Dreams are what they are dreams. I do believe in symbology in dreams and also you could be reliving your past lives in your dreams. As far as dying though. I don't think that you will die in real life if you die in your dreams.
TheAlmighty13- Oh I'm sorry! I didn't even see the sandbox! *Slaps self* I too wake up just before I theoretically would die, so I guess we're in the same boat. As far as people not dreaming, it's impossible. I know it's somehow proven that people dream multiple dreams every night, I just don't know what memory plays in that game. :)
It can kill, but not in a sens you get kille din the dream you are killed in real life, I mean by the dream itself been so strong and so alive your brain stops the heart and breathing like if you're dead then you die. How many have been found as dead in their sleep? Many, mostly old, how many have just smiled and died? They saw what made them go and it triggered the brain.
I think it is the fear of dying in your dream and it happening in real life that makes you wake up not that it will actually happen but that you fear it will happen so the brain will wake the body before you die
Wierd. I have had a fist through my stomach which would have kill me but I woke up. I have never actually died.
Excellent point Bathory. Many people do fear death the most, it only makes sense that it would plague dreams. And it is a mystery as to how one would die, therefore waking up before dying in a dream would not allow one to see the outcome... which basically just makes you wonder more.
CryingMist is right i have heard that people can have heart failure while dreaming but the problem with that is no one can be sure that the person was dreaming when they died...
There is quite a long-winded intricate explanation of why you don't die in the sandbox, written some boring old codger you may be interested in falling asleep through! LoL
It's entitled "Dream Seizures"
I hope it helps, cos i sure ain't typing it out again!! LoL
The Almighty.... You aren't having much luck with your identity today, are you???! LoL
Regarding decapitation etc.
You didn't die, though, did you. It was obviously, as you say, symbolic, and thus already preprogrammed that you were to "dream" that occurrance.
Yes there was a subject dealing with dreams in the Sandbox...This one is kind of different...
How could anyone really know? I mean, obviously someone can't tell us their dream killed them...
I think that is why there is still fear as to whether their dreams can kill or not because no one can ever know if it has ever really happend
I agree with Bathory. The only dream I've had anywhere near like that is the "falling dream" where I wake up with my heart trying to beat its way out of my chest.
I have found that the falling dream is your astral form re entering your sleeping body. Feels like you are falling cause you have not mastered the descent back into your body yet. It is like riding a bike you fall a lot till you learn how to ride properly then it is smooth sailing from then on
I have never died in my dreams, but I have dreamed about what happened after my death. I have had many dreams about being suffocated or hurt and wake feeling it. I don't think that it was because of my dreams. I think that my dreams were affected by me hurting my self in my sleep. Once I dreamed I was falling off a cliff and got really hurt at the bottom. When I woke up I was at the bottom of my stairs and I had fallen the whole way down.
Personally, the FEAR of impending death is worth than any death that could result. I don't know if that makes any sense to the rest of you, but I've found it to be true, whether in my dream world or the real world.
I'm hard-pressed to say yes or or on this one. I've not known anyone who's survived their own death dream that I might ask. :o)
dreams can kill, scare you to death. what makes you think your dreams or just dreams.
I have heard the old wives tales like if you dream you are falling and you hit the ground that you will die... Perhaps the tale came about due to fear of dying in the first place. To dream of death once meant that you or someone close to you will die.. I believe that it could be just a myth... however if you do die due to a dream how are you going to tell anybody?
i dont think so i have dreamed of dying many times but i am still alive and kicking
I've heard quite a few different theories to the 'jerk' one feels that then wakes us with heart pounding hard, and for me, it is usually every time I have the falling experience in my dreams.
I have never reached the bottom, so i know not, what would happen if i DID, in my dream.
I used to dream that My Mum died.. and recently my Daughter dreamt that I died. She was staying at a friends house when it happened. she woke and talked about the dream.
She has deep insight and a lot of psychic energy about her, and she is VERY intuitive, So i read her dreams.
I also related it to when i dremt My Mum died.. I was worried about her. and My dream of HER dying was symbolic to my emotions & my love for her.
About 2 years ago, I was in a VERY bad place I dreamt Of my children dying and it upset me to my stomach as it was SO REAL. Although there was an impending 'threat' to their safety.. I know I'd never have them at a danger. So I didn't fully understand that dream.
I've never bled in my dreams either..
My teeth get damaged a lot LOL, but never see blood.
If anyone has dreamt they have died, i'd really be interested to know.
I dont think DREAMS kill. I think its more of a scare to you of "omg Im gonna die". Ive had the dreams where I have woken up short of breath or crying which deals with a dream. But its your mind just thinking its real. Ive never heard anything of someone dying of a dream..but you never know what might be going on.
nah i dont think they kill but sometimes your brain belives that its reality thats why... like ive had this lol... i was dreaming i wanted to pee and i woke up and ran to the bathroom cuz i really had to go... lol and another dream i constantly have is falling down the stairs and i actually like try to stop myself from falling and wake up and find it was just a dream... the brain is an amazing thing no one knows what its true potential is yet...
So maybe it's a misconceived notion that dying is your sleep is the peaceful way to go?
i am not too sure of this but i do know that i have died in my sleep and then woke up with chest pains so i think there may be some connection there
I've often had dreams like that, i'll be dreaming that i'll be in a fight with beasts or some kind & wake up short of breath & aching in parts of my body such has my arms & feet...afew times i've had dreams that i'm flying & then all of a sudden i'll wake up on the floor...its all to do with your subconscience...if you dream something that you feel is so real your body persives (spelling) it as real, as for the breathing its much the same, if in your dream your running your, your body acts as tho its running , hence the shortness of breath & the tiredness...etc...but the scariest dream i've ever had was when i dreamt that i was falling from a building of a massive height but actually hit the ground...so i dont believe the old wifes tale of the if you fall & hit the ground in your dreams you die...im not the only person whos had dreams like that...i site i went to before, had afew people with dreams of falling from a building hitting the ground & dreamt that they bounced off the ground & woke up...!!
I think dreams could kill you if there are certian circumstances. Those being, sick, elderly, or mentally unstable. Your brain creates dreams. Many people find that dreams are only extensions of ourselves. If you have a dream where you were not breathing right, you could possibly stop breathing all together if you did so in the dream. That is open to debate of course, but it is real.
The only time I have had really bad dreams that I know I could not think of any other time is on codiene, which I am allergic too. I had horrible bloody dreams in which everyone is dead. Otherwise, I have the usual ones.
Well I do stop breathing all together, then I kind of come out of dreaming & start dozing & realise Im actually not breathing at all & wake up properly...
I haven't heard many stories of people dying from their dreams, but I suppose that could go along with "dying in your sleep". Whenever I have a dream where I'm near death, I always wake up.
i believe if you stay in a dream were you are dieing long enough it could happen...
This is copied and Psted from a thread in The Sandbox entitled, "Dream Seizures".
I felt it was appropriate here.
Sorry it is long, but i have a fascination with the Human Brain!

Hello!
There are two main reasons this happens.
1) When the brain is initially going into sleep, and the body still has an excess amount of energy stored in the muscles, there is a sudden rush of adrenaline released in order to "Dump" this energy, and forces all the muscles to fully relax. This is usually done *just as you are falling asleep, and you will find yourslef jerk, wake up, and immediately fall into a deep sleep.
The second reason is a little more complex.
During sleep, your brain, which is split into Conscious (alert/aware) and Subconscious (systemic/imaginary/senses) segregates and the Conscious brain, usually active whilst awake, shuts down and allows the Subconscious to take over.
Due to this, all Motor function is "switched off" except for the obvious danger mechanisms.
However, there is a particular part of the Midbrain, which allows a feedback signal linking the Conscious to the Subconscious. Thus, when you DREAM something is happening, and your vivid imagination overpowers your (resting) Conscious brain, this feedback signal communicates between the two cortexes and initiates either, feedback, movement, or over-ride.
I shall explain those three.
Feedback..... Your Subconscious gives the signal (you dream) that you are covered in water..... your conscious KNOWS you are asleep, but believes the "dream", so you move your body in order to confirm dryness/wetness etc. (your hot water bottle may have leaked, thus guiding the dream state) or you may be hot and sweating, in which case you will uncover yourself. All whilst remaining asleep.
Movement... Have you ever dreamt you were reaching something? and you woke up with an arm in the air? This is similar.
During the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) stage of sleep, your Conscious and SubConscious minds are working together. Hence sometimes, you may be RUNNING in your dream, and actually making miniature movements a la running, whilst stationary in your bed!
This is more easily explained whilst wathcing a sleeping pet (dog or cat). Ever seen a sleeping dog look like it's chasing something? Hind legs twitching like a racehorse???!!! LoL. well that is what is happening in it's dream! IF you are brave.... touch the dog.... it will probably attack you, as it is slower to respond to the feedback, and will BELIEVE that whatever has just touched it, is attacking it! Hence the term "Let Sleeping Dogs Lie" comes from!!!
I'll come back to this part in a moment, as there was a very impressive experiment done some years ago.
Over-ride... This is where the Subconscious mind has conjured up a situation in your dream which has caused the necessary feedback systems to panic. For example.... You dream you are say, running away from a viscious animal, through dense undergrowth, and are running out of stamina, yet the animal is gaining on you.
Your Body naturally believes what is told, so your muscles are working, your heart rate IS increasing, as is your breathing pattern. At some point, your Feedback system is going to hit "red alert", and cause you to so something about it. IF you were awake, and you touched a hot surface, you would immediately respon, no matter what. Well, here, your Conscious brain is told that YOU ARE IN DIRECT DANGER, and you attempt to jump a tree etc.... which wakes you up, because your Subconscious hasn't invented the tree in the dream, but your Conscious is now fully aware there is a problem!
I hoe this makes sense and i haven't gone on for too long?
Now.... There was an experiment performed some years ago by Pavlov, of the Salivating Dog's fame. He managed to tap into the motor cortex of a cat that "switches off" the full movement of the body whilst in sleep, and "deactivated" it!
This cat was placed in a large warehouse, and left to sleep. After an hour, (presumably when it entered REM stage of sleep), It suddenly got up and started walking around. Jumping (over fences), running, digging, playing etc. It truly was bizzare if you ever get to see the video. I will try to look for it!!
Unfortunately, the experiment was inconclusive, as the poor cat ran into the wall of the building, and suffered fatal neck injuries.
For the record, Hypnosis works on this "middle" stage of Subconscious-Conscious feedback system.
Although you are fully aware of what you are doing, your brain cannot differentiate as easily what is real, and what is not.
Furthermore, You can "change" your dreams by "tapping into" this subconscious-conscious change over.
But that'sa different subject altogether, called NLP!
A most interesting subject which i may start a thread on!
I'll shut up now!
Class dismissed! LoL
I`ve died in a dream before, i woke up the next morning, with 3 strange red marks, but thats about it. The only possible way i think of dying from a dream is if your brain goes in to a sense of shock, which will most likely cause a heart attack. It`s weird the way it works, i always dream when i sleep facing the window, but when i face the wall i never dream.
im not sure i always have dreams where im dying i see myself dying i can feel it too but i still wake up every morning
LunarWolf- Do you know if they have tested on people as they have on cats? Based on your fine essay (Which I send many thanks out for, it was extremely interesting), I would say that the human mind is basically just not all there while we are unconscious. It makes me wonder about a few different aspects of sleep...
1. Could what we ingest during the day trigger these dreams?
2. Could a person who uses a sleeping aid actually find themselves in trouble should that medication override their will to wake up?
So many questions*grins* .
Some tales in U.K. speak of "The Old Hag" who comes at night and tries to suffocate people as they sleep.
Yes I have heard of the myth u speak of, I have died in my dreams as well. And am still kicking*grins* Most of mine are past life dreams and or regressions and I see my death.
Some say demons can visit at night and stop someones heart or shut down the respiratory center of the brain.Usually at some else's bidding or command.
It all depends on what cha believe.
I remember a post in another thread that said that somoene knew of a story of a Guy that was found in his bed, clinically dead, NOW.. He had no bruising so to speak, BUT on post-mortem almost every bone in his body was shattered.
From what I remember, this was a piece about the possibility of 'dying in our sleep'
FREAKY as it sounds... and I do not know if this is a true-case. I have never heard of it before, but that doesn't mean it doesn't occur!
But it is CERTAINLY interesting..
sorry about the essay!!
To answer your questions,
1) They have NOT, as far as i know, performed such a radical experiment on humans, as there would be serious ethical matters, as seen by the sorry end to the cat!)
HOWEVER, the CLOSEST one has come is simply the introduction on Hypnosis (mainly stage, than therapy). This taps into the Subconscious mind, whilst the Counscious Still has control of Motor function. Stage Hypnosis works more on NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) as opposed to the deeper therapy status. This means that the mind id open to suggestion, and can "live" a dream, although the Conscious brain WILL take over when necessary. i.e.- if you normally wouldn't do something in "real life", and it was suggested under "hypnosis", then you STILL WOULD NOT DO IT. Whereas, in a dream, you probably would.
Secondly, there has been SOME study on foods and sleep, but it came back inconclusive. Where many foods require the body to shut down (hence you feel tired after a hearty meal), some actually stimulate the brain. I am not sure HOW this works, but i am certainly going to look into it! I LOVE this topic (could you tell!!) and am going to take up my studies on it again. But i digress.
IT HAS been proven that certain types of CHEESE, ingested before sleep, will induce particular chemical in the brain that causes Bizarre dreams.
I HAVE tried this and it HAS worked. Not every time, but i dreamt completely different dreams ffrom my "norm" when i remembered!
To answer your third question (numbered 2), I can only say it really does depend on what medications had been taken.
I'll sum it up in an example. Somebody who is in a coma, will STILL have their major saftey mechanisms, as aforementioned, in place. Depending on how "braindead" they are / appear. There is a scale by which comatosed patients are scored. Similar to the Oxford scale.
If, under sedation, the body is lacking in something (i.e oxygen, temperature control, comfort) then the brain WILL move into emergency mode and (gasp, sweat/shiver, move) respectively.
Ever got up in the middle of the night to go to the toilet but done it "automatically" sleeping like a log either side? that's an emergency override.
The only time the Conscious mind WON'T take over, is when it is damaged, through poisoning (excessively drunk / drugged), or medically sedated. (This is why during an operation, there are so many wires and tubes etc to monitor your body, becasue YOU cannot!)
I hope this helps?
Sorry it's another long one. :(
I feel silly now! I get excited talking about things i like, or know about!
:)
I have had the falling dream but i can take control and i landed on my feet. I live!!! lol But i did have a dream i was choking and couldnt breath. My cat was sitting on my face, suffocating me and i could barely wake up and push him off. I could have died if my body hadnt jerked.
Don't be sorry for the essay, it was great.
Perhaps all this is a matter of the individual. What they eat, take, their comfort level, etc. One would think that people who "go by the book" when it comes to health wouldn't experience this, whereas those with an unhealthy lifestyle would. Chemicals run rampid in the brain, and everything we ingest effects a different one I suppose. Therefore, for instance, if someone were to ingest something that effects the ceratonin (spelling?) in ones brain for the worse they have a nightmare, and vice versa. Or maybe it just has everything to do with ceratonin as it is the "happy chemical"
That's a good point!
I actually never thought of that!
Perhaps that's why one is supposed to drink Red, as opposed to white wine of an evening!
Hmmm. I shall have to investigate that!
Thanks!
:)
Hmmm......I don't know.
But dreams can sure humiliate you though.
The subconscience is a twisted thing.
Twisted indeed...............
If you believe they are real it can happen. There have been cases of it. Mostly in children though with their night terrors because at that age, you believe in anything.
I too don't remember my dreams any more but i have woken up on many occasions on the brink of death somehow. As far as i am aware the purpose of a dream is to sort through the things that have happened or been thought about during the day to clear space for the new day to begin. i suppose even in sleep the brain wouldn't let the body die.
Ms Fortunate, i have sent you an email outlining my initial findings.
Furthermore, Has anyone here seen "Carefree" with Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire?
Apparently, he uses her as a subject in his analyses of Dream-Inducing Foods!
Digressing from the initial question as it may be, I am off to find it on eBay!!! LoL
i dont think so ive had plenty of dreams dying but im still here.....just lol
silver1.. you've actually DIED in your sleep?
What happened???? I mean.. LoL.. What happened IN the dream??
sometimes they can but most of the time you wake up right when you die or when your about too and then you actually think your dead
I do recall having a dream where I died when I was a kid. I remember that I was in a field and there was some giant piece of farm equipment with blades coming at me and I ran into a shack nearby. Long story short the thing broke up the shack and cut my head off. The odd thing was that I remember thinking "no I don't want to die" and seeing the machine reverse and then replay with the thing missing me. Luckily I didn't die ! :)
I have also had a bunch of falling dreams where I wake up "landing" on my bed and can still feel the bed shaking from the impact. Those are always scary.
It seems falling dreams are very, very popular. :)
Perhaps saving oneself in a dream is your conscious putting a halt to an otherwise terrifying adventure.
Ok from personal experience yes things like that can happen. For example I had a drem where there was this very mysterious guy and he turned out to be a vampire and to cut that part of the dream short he ended up biting me and I woke upi from this dream and I had a bite mark on my neck in the same place he had bit me, I had finger nail marks on my fave and bruises on my arms and face. And if your thinking that I did this in my sleep your wrong I cut my nails so short and file them after so there is like nothing when I touch something my fingertips would hit first. And yes this experience scared the living crap out of me. But yeah things like that can happen to anyone at any time for any given reason. It's how you percieve the dream and what happened.
hmm im not really sure on this one.. but i guess anythings possible..
I've actually never seen that movie, thanks. I live on Elm St. (and I prefer not to see Johnny Depp get eatten by a bed).
Back to the topic at hand.
I never have died in a dream. I have always woken up first. I think that someone could possible get so scared that the have had heartattack while they are dreaming and that caused there death.
Well, I think it can happen. There have been plenty of times where I dreamt of falling and twisting in the air and then woke up only to find myself falling off the top bunker! Then again, I tend to act out most dreams I have. I'm a sleepwalker. I think it happens to more people who are prone to crying out or acting out of their dreams in their sleep. That and children... But I think I already covered that in a previous post.
who nos i mean i have dreamed of falling and i woke up to me falling to the floor, or i have a re occuring dream iv had this dream since i was a kid but thats for a nother post
Never heard of such a thing....I believe that dreams could possibly foreshadow death, but as far as dying from the dream nothing to back that up.
i have dreamed that i died several times. i believe this is quite unusual as most people wake up just before dying. in one dream, i was murdered, but returned as an unseen ghost. i did not awake until i had got revenge by causing the death of my murderer.
almost like dreaming i was dead, was when i was a kid i slept on the bottom bunk of bunkbeds, and i kept dreaming i had been accidentally buried alive to wake up in a coffin. several times i awoke in real life panicking because i had dreamed i was in a coffin, and thought the top bunk was the coffin lid.
I believe you can die in a dream... My better half is a good example of what a dream can do to a person... He'll wake up with cuts all over and such having been fine when we go to bed... I hope however, I never see the day a dream truly kills anyone though....
i don't know if it is true - but i heard that some students once did an experiment on the power of suggestion. they put another student in a bath, and made him think they had cut his wrists with a razor (really they ran an ice cube over his wrist, and then discreetly added red dye to the bath water) to see if he would display symptoms of blood loss. allegedly, his heart stopped and he died, because he believed he was bleeding to death. i dont know if this really happened , or if its an urban myth.
I have had some dreams of dieing however I always end up waking before I take in a last breath. I have been hit in a dream and sometimes the next day I would have a mark where it had happen.
When you dream your mind is opened up. The side that is used in dream is different than the waking mind. I think that you could die if your mind believes it. If your mind thinks it is dead than your body way shut down. The body can't live if the mind is really gone. I guess that it depends on if the dream is dramatic enough for that to hapen......
Wow... That's interesting. I'd really like to know if that one is true or not. ..... :P
Hi again!
Karnstein, That rings a bell.
I THINK i heard the same story, but he didn't die, but they couldn't revive him and he spent quite some time in a coma.
It was probably a biofeedback confusion between the brain and the body not adding up!
I.e the suggestion implanted to the brain that the wrists were cut, the FEELING of liquid trickling, but the LACK of neural feedback from pain or damage.
The brain would inevitably shut down in order to protect itself.... a bit like going into hypothermia. The brain shuts off ALL of the body systems so that ALL energies are concentrated on keeping the brain alive.
I was going to use an example of some modern day cars, but that thought kinda frightened me! LoL
i have always heard that if you die in your sleep then you dont walk up but i have fell from a building and hit the ground in my sleep and they only thing that has happened was i woke up real fast in a sweat
Me again.
I am VERY intruigued about the way some people say they HAVE actually died in their sleep.
Now, i am NOT saying i disbelieve, as i am not knowledgeable enough in this field. I just enjoy it.
However, with the Physiological and Psychological knowledge i DO have, i have treid to explain why it SHOULD not be possible, or indeed why it WOULD happen.
My point is, I have re-read this thread and the other dream related thread in the Sandbox, and nearly ALL of the people who have said they DID die, actually continued dreaming through their own "life"
2 or 3 spring to mind. Someone said they had their head chopped off, and continued as a headless fighter, carrying it under his arm. The cynic in me asks.... being a dream (aka a cartoon), IS THIS DEATH?
Somebody stated that they got chopped up by a farming vehicle and reversed it up and escaped... The cynic in me says Did you actually die? You CAN be hacked up and still live for a few seconds etc.
Karnstein, you stated that you returned as a ghost....
This i have to confess is harder for me to analyse. Do YOU personally believe that death doesn't count until your spirit has "passed on" etc, and finished any unfinished business?
This may explain why you sought and gained revenge and woke up before "crossing over".
If so, this just exacerbates my need to know MORE on the brain, because it just shows that the conscious mind KNOWS what it is thinking down to the intricate detail of PERSONAL beliefs and morals!
MAN! I love this S**T!! LoL
I shall go look for that experiment and return my findings.
there has to be someone out there who has survived a dream about their death, someone who has woken up after their death in a dream. i mean there has to be right?
I don't think so honestly dreams are subconcious it would be a bad evloutionary step if your dreams could kill you as I understand it they are basically for you to deal with problems you are trying to fix in your waking live so no.
I, myself had never had any negative side-effects from a "death dream". I've had plenty of dreams where I was different people and died, or was myself and died in different ways. I'm familiar with the "dying in your dream means dying in real life" and really after my first death dream I was pretty freaked. And then when I had another, it freaked me out even more. Since then I've had about 10. I'm not sure whether to be afraid anymore, or to realize that it's just a dream. Either way, nothing had happened to me yet.
I've just had a thought....
(yes, i'm ok, thanks. No, it didn't hurt much, and Ok... perhaps i WILL sit down for a moment)
...which probably contradicts everything i've said and negates everything i though.
So... i don't think i should share it!
Oops.
ok ok...
IF one can HEAL oneself in sleep, and sort psychologically,
Then perhaps one CAN destroy also!
Hmmm.
Now i'm stumped.
WHO started this stupid thread anyway??????
LoL
Hell I don't know about dying....seeing as I have never died in my dreams, but came close. I did have a dream once about stepping into a den of rattlesmakes and as soon as one bit me I woke up...my leg had to really red places on it...like I had gotten poked really hard and it stung for a couple of minutes. That was weird enough for me.
Perhaps you were bitten by an insect, etc? Explains the pain AND the marks.
Whilst the Subconscious brain can control the dream, the Conscious brain can "interfere"
The first time i worked this out was when i was a child and fell asleep in the car.
It started hailing, and i dreamt i was marching with the army. It woke me up after a while, and i realised the marching was still going on even though my eyes had opened and i knew where i was!
My brain was always slow to catch up!
Ooh! Squirrels!
*runs off.....
I used to believe that myth but lately I have been dieing in my dreams a lot and obviously I am not dead. I like you can feel my dreams as well. I am lucky I rarely ever feel the painful ones I do however almost always feel the pleasure ones ;)
That is an interesting point does everyone think pinching yourself in a dream is a good way to tell if your alsleep?
to the one above lol! yeah if u can remember to do it while ur in the dream, sometimes ur not even thinking about it on that level to me my dreams are like quests that I am meant to lead I have many dajvoo and I have rememberd having a preminition in one of them but, it was a one time deal it hasnt happend sence.
I've never died in a dream before.. *knocks on wood* lol. However, I have felt the shortness of breath before when I've awaken from a dream a couple of times. I don't know if it is actually the dream that could possibly kill someone, or if there is something physically wrong with the person and it just so happens to be heightened in a dream state... both are possibilities I suppose.
well okay then so is it a dream if you fill it or if you don't ?
I think it`s possible to have a heart attack while your asleep because of your dreams....
you can be scared to death correct? so why cant u be scard to death in your dreams as well? i think u can die bc of your dreams bc the mind controls the body there for the mind can belive its real to the point that your heart stops or u have a heart attack there for your dreams kill you. correct?
I lucid dream, I'll make this short, as a wee vamp I had the exact same dream five nights in a row. A barn and fire was involved, I was falling down from a loft. The second night I had the dream is when I realized I was dreaming. After that I was able tu will myself not tu wake further and further each time. The last night of the dream I hit the barn floor, I woke and never had the dream again. I was maybe five or six.
most people that get scared to death have some type of pre-existing condition so I guess in that cases you could
i've had dreams like that but i had one where i fell off this very high cliff into water and i was drownding an couldent breath an then i woak up an was very short of breath an was struggling to breath an my heart was pounding and i felt like i was falling .
well ive have to had a dream but only one time i was on a farm and i was going to the barn to get something but didnt know what i was at the barn door and something im gessing it was a lycan but not shure what it was but i end up waking up right then and i couldnt breath for 1 to 1 1/2 mins so i do belive its posible to die in your sleep.
perhaps my dream was a subconscious thing....I don't think it was an insect bite though, seeing as after a short while the red marks cleared up and the stinging sensation went away. It was still weird as hell though :)
well I myself have had some violent dreams and in many cases even woke up with cuts .. I keep my nails short and dull.. yet I have still awoken with some damage .. too deep for nails ... I hesitate to go into more detail ..
well that could be something else entirely maybe a some sort of night creature or bady is a good term for any unknow enity
I dont believe that dreams can kill you, maybe scare the crap out of you but not kill you.
Wow, there are a lot of threads on this topic! Personally I don't think a dream in its self can kill. I know, at least for me, that if I die in my dream I won't die in real life if I don't wake up in time. I've died many times and either changed to a different dream or just kept dreaming in that one. In fact many dreams over the years have occoured with my dying be the beginning.
I do believe someone else can kill you while you're dreaming and use/mutilate the dream so it becomes tangible though.
I honestly have no idea of why this can or could happen to someone. However I have experienced it once or twice myself. I have also often wondered why this happens.
One of my dreams involved me drowning and when I woke up I was coughing and could taste salt water in my mouth. I have never truly understood this nor do I really want to. For the simple fact that it scares me to the point that I rather not think about it. Never the less it does happen. Why, I do not know.
I dream alot when I have slept but never hear of a dream trying to kill you before now I have had dreams to where they have scared me half to death tho
WynterMourn!!
You are the first person I have come across that can slso rewind dreams and go thru it in a different way!
I intentionally rewind my dream and do it again!! I remember what i am thinking WHILST I am dreaming! so, if I were to die in my dream.. I could in theory.. Stop it, if I rewound it.
Like I aforesaid, if anyone has actually died in their dream, I'd just LOVE to know about it.
With Lucid Dreaming I THINK that is a form of self-hypnosis.. (Astral-planing?)
i remember in a dream not too long ago...that i was stabbed in the chest, when i woke up there was a bruise where i was "stabbed"
your mind can play tricks on you but your dreams can also tell you what may happen later on
if you give your dreams enough power and believe that they are real....what happens in your dream becomes real
Lucid dreaming is similar to self-hypnosis insofar as you are consciously controlling your subconscious mindset.
However, Astral planing is an entirely different concept altogether, and would make an excellent thread!
Lucid dreaming is The brain's way of bringing clarity to the "vision", by means of taking over the scene, and what "you" in the dream are doing.
It is a very difficult concept to master, and those that have it can have the most fun in dreams! I learnt it after getting several recurring dreams, and as Minx said, woke up enough to control it, but not enough to "wake up". I have been able to do it ever since. (when i sleep / dream!)
However, to answer the query, Lucid dreaming is more a state of NLP (NeuroLinguistic Programming) than it is Hypnosis, as you are not in a trance at the time, so to speak, and are not having suggestions implanted from an external source!
NLP is a safer route, in my opinion, but i have only just recently started researching this method of healing.
