I had the weirdest experience the other night. I was asleep, and I suddenly woke up. The TV wasn't on, but I could hear David Letterman talking. I couldn't move. I could look around, and lift my head, but I couldn't move anything else. I tried my hardest to get up, but I just couldn't. I could even hear the train going by my house. The night light we keep in the room wasn't on.
Suddenly I could move, the night light came on, and I didn't hear David Letterman anymore. My fiancee thinks I was dreaming, but I am almost positve I was awake. The train was still going by the house when I was able to move, and I turned the TV on, and sure enough, David Letterman was on TV. I know I didn't imagine the night light being off and then coming on.
I was also alone in the house. I already had a hard time sleeping at night, now it's even worse.

Anyone have any ideas about what might have happened?

To be honest, I would still say dream. Almost like a precognitive dream. However, with the certainty of being awake, maybe out of body experience. Although, for me it would be a nightmare, Letterman...

Yeah, Letterman sucks. But I don't feel like I was dreaming, and the fact that I heard something that was on TV but the TV wasn't on is really weird.

I suppose it could have been the power. It might be a haunted house. I know there were some civil war battles near here, I'm just not sure exactly where. Not to mention any innocent people who might have been killed in their homes. I was just wondering what everyones opinions were. It kinda freaked me out.

Unless you have REALLY mean spirits, I don't think they would've made you hear Letterman. *shrugs* Just a thought.

I would go w/ dream or out of body experience as well. I mean, you're third eye would be more likely to be open (which could have given you the precoginition of Letterman on tv) while you were on the astral plane, so that may be your explanation.

Well I don't think it's a haunted house. Not too many civil war victims would have liked Letterman. I would suggest looking into the out of body aspect. You would feel exactly like you're awake and see everything around you but not like it truly is.

I have to laugh at that comment about mean spirits. Too true.
Thank you for your thoughts on that, both of you. I'll look into the out of obdy experience. That would make some sense.

I have had nights like that and the easiest thing to do is start with the most obvious reasoning, which is the dream theory. Yes, it may have felt like you were awake but your subconsciousness could have just registered about the time of night and the train could have been placed in the dream from you hearing it unknowingly. I have a habit of doing it with my dreams, I will even feel things because they are so vivid and I believe they are real.

But why assume the worse case when it might not be necessary? It will cause you to become paranoid and lose more sleep over something that might not even be there or is an issue at this time.

My advice is to see if it happens again and if it does, write out every singe detail in a notebook or your journal. Then analyze it a bit more, it should give you more insight of what the issue really is.

Ive had similar experiences where u are awake, but u cant open ur eyes, u cant move, and u cant speak, no matter how hard u try. I agree that it could be a dream. but it could also be somewhat of an outer body experience where u couldnt get out of ur body. however, i know the reasons for why it happens to me in particular. i have very low bloodpressue. as 80 is the low on normal blood pressure, it is my high. hardly ever goes higher. and sometimes i get very tired and dizzy. if i go to sleep during i time when my pressure is too low, i have that experience. where im awake but i cant really wake up. its a horrible feeling.

do u know abotu any blood pressure problems u might have?

To go along with the spirits theory (if there was one) I have read somewhere quite a while back that there are spirits that come and, for lack of a better word, "sit" on you in your sleep. I think these didn't have the greatest intentions toward someone's health, but I remember that they put pressure on you so that you may sink in your bed, can't get up, or sometimes can't move at all.

It might be a big theory, but it sounds almost exactly like the article i read this from... as for being aware of your surroundings (i.e. hearing the train) you could have just woken up while one of these spirits/demons/whatevers was on you, and they fled, leaving you to move again and letting light permeate the room once more.

I'm going with it was a demon... who/what else would make you listen to Letterman, even while the t.v. isn't on?

Another, area that relates this to paranormal events is alien abduction has some similar symptoms. This brings us back to the sleep paralysis connection (see above) as symptomology is very similar.

my personal experience was that you were astral projecting and you were not fully back in your body, if you awake before you are fully back, you can be somewhat locked in your body unable to move, you are aware of your surroundings ... but the lamp... makes you wonder... and I must agree.. letterman... scary...

But, extremehate did bring up an interesting point. If it was astral projection without training then it is a plausible explaination.

I do not belive David Lettermn is an ET but stranger things have happened, Have you intertained the idea that the moment between sleep and wake is a dementional state?
People in an uncontious state can hear and can not move or speak. Yet they are aware of what is going on.
time can be lost in a state like this,
And the mind can process faster than any computer

Platinumwitch, thanks for the links. They were very helpful.
Hellaciousrose, I agree with the coincidence thing. That was what really made me wonder. I never watch Letterman.
Everyone seems to agree with me on the fact that the show is just torture. I can't understand why he's even still on TV.
Everyone else, thank you for the suggestions. I've already started a journal on weird things that have been happeneing to me. I've never been one to read too much into my dreams, but lately I've started wondering. I've been reccording anything weird that happens to me or I dream. Things taken alone are interesting, but when I put it all together it gets even more interesting.

some would say that you were trapped between wake and dream state. it has happened to be its as if you are awake but still in dream mode. i have had tests done while i was asleep and they have it on record i was in dream state before i was even sleeping but did not realize it. kinda freaky though especially when you do realize it.

There are some really interesting ideas here- the only thing I cou really comment on with any strong opinion would be that often when you are between asleep and awake, the rest of your limbs can be "asleep" t has happened to me before... I woke up, and for about 20 seconds I couldn't move my arms!

yeah - that is definetely sleep paralysis - i've had it a couple of times.

when you are asleep, your body is paralyzed to stop you acting out your dreams. sometimes it doesnt work properly, which is why people sleepwalk. but the opposite can happen - the sleep paralysis is still switched on, even though you are awake. i had it a few months ago . i woke up unable to move, but i could feel a hand clutching mine. it was a cold, clammy dead hand, and i could just move my thumb to feel it - but i couldnt move or speak, or even open my eyes.

it was creepy - but i'm sure the hand i felt was halucinatory.

my guess is that you were dreaming. I often fall asleep in a comfortable chair and upon awakening I am often confused by my surroundings and have a hard time remembering whether I turned a light off.

You also mentioned you live near train tracks, is it possible that the passing train has caused vibrations whereupon the wiring in the house might be affected? This might cause a problem with the lights

I can't really remember the name of this (sorry) but I will try and explain it. There is a state between waking and sleeping, I no longer remember what it is called, in this state you can not move, and often times you witness your nightmares in reality. Unless David Letterman talking and the t.v not being on is your worst nightmare then this most likely doesn't pertain to you. Sorry that this didn't help.

You mentioned in your original post that you had trouble sleeping lately.

I would sugest sleep deprevation may be the cause, though as others have mentioned low blood pressure could also have this effect.

In any case I wish you a restful night and sweet dreams.
