My question is i have heard of thecalling the 4 corner and in native american rituals there is the 7 directions and im wondering if anyone knows the defferents?

The four corners are the four cardinal directions, North South East and West.

Any additions are usually the splits, NW, NE, SW and SE.

THEN one gets into the metaphysical Internal vs. external, etc.

There is some reason to use the number 7 for the ritual enclosure, as in representing the seven temples in our lives: the DNA, womb, body, house, world, inner (imaginary) temple, cosmic temple

The four are north south east and west

Whats best is what works for you old magic v new magic ?

I have heard the 4 corners area in the southwestern united states is an interesting place to visit

to those who answered the queston thx. to vamplez no the 4 corners is a boreing place it is the only place where 4 states connect at 90* to each other. the even directions are prayer to the great spirits of north, south, east, west, mother earth, heavenly father, and the spirit inside. i was wondering how it dinfers from the wiccan 4 corner rite?

Using elemental magic, the four corners represent the four cardinal directions (as said)....they also represent the four elements - Air, Fire, Water, and Earth, the fifth element and the fifth point of the pentacle is the spirit which creates the circle.

Interesting read... this thread... I am aware of the four corners.. or directions... but I am not familiar with the seven... need to do some researching... anyone have any suggestions on where or what to read?

i know of the 4 corners very well..The ones native Americans use there is 7 corners..beign part native american i know this..and will talk to anyone on it in a message..tks..

Just as Vamplez pointed out, there are the four corners that make up the borders of Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico.

There is a 'four corners' of lesser significance where I come from in Mississauga, Canada. The old streets of Airport and Derry Roads were once the hub of the town, which were known to the folk there as "the four corners". I am unsure if this name was to honour the Native American legend or not.

However, the real intent of this thread was to provide insight into the Native American belief.

I just had an interesting thought. The four corners, could they also represent the four elements of Earth, Water, Fire and Wind? The fifth element would of course be human.

Well said lavisbre.....indeed it is all the same to users of chaos magick.....calling the 4 corners, the seven directions, the pentagram, the chaos star, the septagram (faery or elven star), the hexagram (star of david) or the seals of solomon.......what does it matter what you use as long as the desired effect is found.

I have taught Wicca & Witchcraft for over 30 yrs and we have always called the quarters and invited the God/Goddess as well as at the end of the casting said: “As it is above , So it is below” this completes the sphere. We do not always use a specific deity though.

Of-course like Christianity Wiccan is just as diverse…

I am a Hereditary Witch, what I teach is not the same as what I was taught as a child… but one has to move with the times… .{My Great-Grannie is spinning right now} I do combine what I was taught and today’s Wicca along with Witta from Ireland Which is where my family came from. She was a swamp witch… which means she combined folk magick, our family traditions, and hedge witchery… she also was an herbalist she passed this knowledge to my Grandmother and her daughters and then to myself and my sister. Just and interesting note my Great, Great Grandmother was 121 years old when she passed on, my grandmother was 118, and my mother and her sisters were between 95-100. It must be the herbal teas…. lol

According to that link from the person a few posts above me, I can see the seven directions are:
1. East
2. South
3. West
4. North
5. Sky
6. Earth
7. Soul

The seven directions seem to be just another way of looking at the four corners. Which would make sense, since everyone sees things a little differently and everyone else. :)

The seven directions are a better way of looking at the casting of a Magick Circle as it is a sphere and not a two dimensional figure. The magick user wants protection in all directions. The seventh point, the center, is spirit which controls all in Wicca and many other similar religions.

Interesting thread...I have heard of the 7 directions, being within the Native American traditions.

I personally call 4 directions.

Also though, if one were to bring in the elemental side of this equasion there's also metal, wood and spirit, to be put with earth, air, fire and water.

I had never heard of 7 directions before but it makes sense. I have called the four corners but then also sky and earth so it seems like just one more step. Great thread.

Wow i've never heard of 7 directions before.. I have and use the 4 directions obvious to us.. North [Earth] ,East [ Air], South [Fire], West [Water] in this case for Witches..

An interesting correlation of animal totems and the 7 directions (+2) is found here:

The totems are found north, south, east, west, above, below, within, to the right and to the left (9 total)

There are also colors associated with the cardinal directions (but not the spirit directions (above, below, within) though they differ from tribe to tribe (Cherokee using red for east and Apache using yellow, etc)
