Vampire... Fact or Fiction?

I had some threads not so long ago about Lycanthropy. I had posted things on the belief that Lycanthropy is Male-Dominated, that if Lycanthropy was a form of infection... would it therefore be possible to become infected with both Vampirism and Lycanthropy...

These posts were slammed...

Because somebody believed they were Hollywood Fiction... and yet here we all are talking about Myth as though it is indeed fact...

So what makes Vampires different... Are they fact or fiction?

Think it was the virus theory which was slammed.

Basically ones lifestyle dictates ones abode....be it fact or fiction.

I'm yet to meet a vampire. I'd like to believe they were fact, not fiction. But until one pops up in my face I guess I'll never know. Same with were creatures and the like. I'm a skeptic, I like to have things proven to me.

Here is my VIEW on things.

No one will ever know being on the internet. I could tell you anything and you would never be able to prove it other wise, and you could tell me anything that I could not prove otherwise.

I don't think in our modern age that we will find any real answers. The MEDIA has screwed things so much that any kind of seriousness is lost.

As previously and accurately opined, the question of "vampires" as possible fact cannot be answered while deriving their definition from that formulated over centuries from today's over-hyped Media-driven pop culture. If there is any truth to the Eastern European "vampire," one must study the origins of the accounts from whence the later pulp novels and today's popular culture image began.

Of course if this is studious done, one quickly realizes that almost all aspects of the popular-culture image of the vampire had absolutely nothing to do with the actual "vampire" as was believed to actually exist. No fangs, no blood drinking, no fear of daylight or crucifixes, etc., all of these characteristics are not found in the original accounts.

What is found as the common characteristic of the historical "vampire" was an "insatiable sexuality" that was quickly vilified and demonized in the same manner as were witches during the horrific "Burning Times." Not coincidentally, witches were likewise primarily vilified for their own insatiable sexuality, as well.

As proclaimed by the Catholic Church in its "bible" against witches during its slaughter of thousands of women, "All witchcraft comes from carnal lust, which is in women insatiable." (Malleus Maleficarum, Question VI; 1484)

Alright...lets talk about the REAL vampires and the REAL werewolfs!

PORPHYRIA is historically thought to be the disease that King George III and other members of British royalty had. It is also commonly and cruely reffered to by some (yes, even medical professionals) as THE VAMPIRE DISEASE, THE WEREWOLF DISEASE, THE ROYAL MALADY, or MENTAL ILLNESS.

PORPHYRIA is life threatening and THERE IS NO CURE!

Porphyria-vampire
werewolves-..its in roman documentation that there were warewolfs..BUT! they were actually cro-magnon people who had failed to even adapt into homo erectus much less a human.

Porphyria has absolutely nothing to do with real vampires given that the claimed inability to tolerate sunlight was a purely fictitious trait ascribed to vampires by fiction writers. This illustrates perfectly the problem I spoke of re: trying to find the truth about the historical "vampire" by using fiction as the standard!

in the original Eastern European accounts, men thought to be "vampires" were reported as working in the daylight, walking around in the daylight, and occasionally even expressing their "insatiable sexuality" with their "victims"... again, in the daylight. Thus, porphyria has absolutely nothing to do with the actual historical accounts of vampires.

If we would all stop attempting to find the facts in fiction, we would have a much better chance of finding the actual facts.

My profile and journal entries provide a good summary of what the actual accounts relate... including links to the many primary sources (e.g., "Vampires of the Slavs," "The Darkling," both by Dr. Perkowski).

As excerpted from my Nov. 2006 entry:

...if one actually takes the time to investigate the original Slavic and/or Roma (Gypsy) accounts, blood drinking almost never appears:

"The weird thing is, in actual panics, where people thought the 'vampire' was right there and active, there are almost no stories about blooddrinking. 'Vampires' were the hungry dead."

Well, if "Vampires were the hungry dead" yet not hungry for blood, then... for what?

"Gypsies believed some vampires had an insatiable sexual appetite and would return from the grave to have sexual relations with their widow or a young woman of their choosing."

-- The Vampire Book, J. Gordon Melton, 1999; p. 616
- http://www.netjava.com/~f14lover/info.html
(emphasis added)

"Gypies thought of the vampire as a sexual entity. The male vampire was believed to have such an intense sexual drive that his sexual need alone was sufficent to bring him back from the grave. His first act usually was to return to his widow, whom he engaged in sexual intercourse. Nightly visits could ensue over a period of time, with the wife becoming exhausted and emaciated."

-- ibid.; pp. 616-617
(emphasis added)

"The sexual nature of the act is plainly indicated in the following examples. Heinrich von Wlislocki*, in his researches into Roumanian superstitions tells us: ...With young people it (The Nosferat) indulges in sexual orgies until they get ill and die of exhaustion. It often happens that women are impregnated by this creature and bear children..."

- On the Nightmare, E. Jones, pp. 117-118 (emphasis added)
* a noted Austrian Gypsologist

"Mullos (Gypsy word for Vampire) also return to satisfy their prodigious sexual appetites... They are so insatiable that their human partners are likely to weaken and become ill with exhaustion."

- The Complete Vampire Companion (R Guiley, pp. 9-10)
(emphasis added)

This, then, is the real Slavic Vampire of history as laid bare by the original Slavic accounts: a highly sexual being whose libido was "insatiable" and who was only hundreds of years later vilified as the fanged, blood-drinking, crucifix-fearing denizen of the night as Stoker and Hollywood have so successfully marketed to us.

Many here consider themselves modern day vampires. With the controlled feeding and metaphysical properties of energy, i do not doubt that they exist. It is the stories of rampant homicidal creatures that perish in the light of day that are questionable.

lol... hey, I agree; vampires were not at all "horney dead guy(s)" any more than witches rode through the air on broomsticks. In both cases, the asexual religious clergy deliberately colluded with local populations to demonize and vilify both hypersexual communities as inherently demonic.

With specific regard to the Eastern European "vampire," these unique males, descendants of the original "Fallen Angels," were demonized as corpses who rose from the dead and ruled by satanic forces. What better way to scare the hell out of the women who might otherwise be sexually seduced and become sexually addicted to them? Only later were the vilifications expanded to include blood drinking, fangs, and all the other later fictions regarding them.

I am still curious why we haven't seen vampire writings. The question to me is can modern day vampires claimto be vampires if they are so unlike the stories and documentation from around the world. Never once did a vampire feel the urge to create records of their creeds, missions, or purpose. Where and why do modern day vampires stray from what has been historically documented?

Had you and your kind been the victims of two near-genocidal slaughters, you would be just as secretive as they are. Far better to have people believe you are fictitious, fanged, "undead," blood-drinkers than to have them seeking a very real remnant of the original descendants of the "Fallen Angels" so as to again vilify them, demonize them, and again seek their destruction.

The Book of Jude in our common King James Bible is perhaps the last extant documented account of the last attempt by this Rephaimic remnant to integrate themselves and their highly unique sexual nature into their contemporary society. Among the many common vilifying characteristics ascribed to them in this biblical book after first demonizing their sensuality, is their description as "wandering stars" (v. 13), alluding to the apparent fact that they as a community at that time "wander(ed)" and did not then, at least, have a land in which to settle and call home.

Of course, so long as people continue to view "vampires" as those described in fiction, none of us would know a true historical "vampire" were he to publish all manner of documents, books, blogs, or... forum entries, for that matter. ;)

Vampires related to the Movie industry are of course fictional.

But there are those with a case called "Hematomia" that have a desire and taste for blood.

Call it vampirism or whatnot. But its not all its cracked up to be in the real world.

Thre are very diverse schools of thought on this topic.

Personally, I operate under the theory that those who say they are vampires of one sort or another (as in, they suffer from physical symptoms) wouldn't call themselves vampires if they had not already been interested in modern vampires and what they represent in the first place. If their personal tastes ran differently, I believe they would call themselves something else entirely, like anemic.

Of course, I'm open to alternative possibilities, but I'm also one of those who would need proof. Unfortunately, many who call themselves vampires bristle at the word "proof", and start bringing up things like religion and proving the existence of God, which is a logic fallacy, and the whole thing makes me want to shower.

I agree, MalkavianMime.

Blood and survival go together, blood and sex go together. We can pretty much agree outright on the first one, but if you don't believe me on the last one, watch two cockatoos go at it. I used to own a pair. It was awful. The walls behind the cage looked like a massacre had occurred.

Anyway, it's about mortality. Sex is life-affirming, survival, fill in the blank. Vampirism, at least the modern form of it, is extremely sexual, and is the penultimate survival fantasy. Not only that, but it's dark. Spiritual darkness is like sex for women in the Victorian Era; all the repression has a lot of us confused.

We ask ourselves, why, if we're not supposed to feel it, do we feel so deliciously evil sometimes? It seems for some, that vampirism is the answer. It's what pops out when the festering boil is lanced.

Vampires are some people's inner monsters. We all have them. That's one of the things that links us together as living, breathing things. I simply think some take it too far.

Buuuuut that's just me.

I have heard that some of the stories of vampires came from people who were actually suffering from anemia and way back before popular medicine needed blood to keep them from getting sick. These people were pale and could not take the sun and were thought to be vampires because of ignorance. I think that real vampires are not what some would think they are but just people who need to have some sort of transfer of energy to feel whole be it blood, psy, sexual or otherwise.

Fact or Fiction. Myth or Reality. I am reminded of an old saying but could be said here aswell.

"Vampires care whether or not you believe they exist as much as you care whether or not they believe you exist."

People will always say prove it to me about everything. Or it can not be.

They said it about the Earth revolving around the sun. They said it about the Earth being Round. About the possibility of flight. About Splitting Atoms. About going into outerspace.

Now that we have exhausted all that science seeks to explore we turn to the Myths and Legends of our past and shake our fingers and say "Prove It"

Well. Prove It Doesn't.

Vampirism is a myth for me. I cant prove vampires are fact because I haven't had the pleasure to meet one. But then again I cant disprove vampirism, like alot of things in this world, history claims them as real beings. Just like God. Vampirism is but myth to me...

Although if I ever happen to find proof I have to mention I would keep it secret in hope of being turned....ha, that will never happen.

UpirLikhyj is always an excellent contributer to anything here at the VR with his historical backing that simply can not be argued as the most accurate documented knowledge you'll find.

However, somtimes things cant be solved with books and although as he has pointed out many things people today consider vampire traits were never involved with the origanal MYTH, it is possible that the creatures we now label as "vampire" with blood sucking and energy stealing or both with fangs or not exist.

OR maybe we should just cut out the impossible attributes and let people that live a life style as close to a modern day " vampire" as they wish and allow them selves to be called a vampire. whats wrong with that? people call them selves Goth when they have nothing to do with historical Goths.... its just a tag like any other nick name.

To ask if a "vampire" is fact or fiction is pointless and unless you specify what exactly you are calling a "vampire".

OniKumo, that's going back to what I'd mentioned before regarding some people bringing religion into the debate and asking others to "prove" the existence of God. The existence of God is a personal belief; it's based on faith. Faith is what you have when you don't have proof. Using the "prove it doesn't exist" argument is the same as saying "I don't have proof". Freakin' admit it. As I said earlier, I'm keeping an open mind to the possibility that something more than mislabeled anemia could be going on. That's all I'm saying. Then, I would ask you why you don't have proof. You don't have to answer me; answer it yourself, in your head, and listen to how it sounds.

God is myth to me also. He is a large figure in history but he cannot be proven. God exists to me....as a myth. Even though I have no faith doesn't mean he doesn't exist as a myth to me. In the bible I am evil. God created me so God is evil. No. Evil is doesn't not exist. Evil is supposedly the absence of good which would make no sense. Good & evil is only a judgement. God is a judgement. Not a being.

As for vampires, you either believe them as something. Just like all things. If you believe that they do exist as a myth or legend then they become true to you in whatever you form you believe them to be. If not you can still laugh and call the so called vampires all posers. Thats as fun as breaking beer bottles in the alley back when I was 5!

Arunima lol I was not suggesting whether I did or did not have proof of thier existance. I was mearly saying was that for every idea as to whether or not something is possible thre is always going to be people who's vision is so narrow as to say that its not until it is proven to them. These are the people who rarlly do much in history or life.

As for proof of existance. Why should I have to prove my existance anymore than you should have to prove yours. Its not a question of faith. Does the Tiger care that you believe it exists? Ask yourself that question and see how your answer sounds in your head.

The logic is not as flawed as you think...

Science has been all about patters... and rules...

The elemental table at one stage had gaps where logic dictated the same rule would apply, the element just hadnt been discovered yet...

Similarly with protons and neutrons... one was known, the other was a guessed entity

It is a slippery slope when asking for personal beliefs as to what out of the myths are true and what are facts. Isn't it nice how we can just pick and choose what we are willing to put faith in?

I believe Vampires are real. Though they come in different forms, from psy to blood, they are still real. Hollywood and books...especially the books...have gotten a lot more truthful now than what used to be believed and I feel that is changing the minds of others.

Okay.

Does the tiger care that I believe it exists?

No, unless it's psychic, as well as narcissistic. Or if it has a conditional existence in which I must believe in it in order for it to exist.

But as far as I know, tigers think "Kill, eat, sleep, sex" and not necessarily in that order.

Soooo. Yeah, sounds okay in my head. Are you saying you are a vampire and you don't need to prove your existence to me because you don't care what I think, or are you saying basically all that minus the vampire part of it? Or, are you saying that the thing, whatever the thing is, vampire, a bowl of wedding soup, doesn't need proof it exists to exist? That'll be a fun debate if that's what you were saying.

LOL Spot on. I do not claim to be a Vampire or Lycan. Or even anything Mystical. I am a Carnivor and a Predator.
lol Do Vampires Exist? What does Existance even mean. How can one even Prove Existance to begin with? "I think. Therefore I am?" Its funny how Humans are the only creature that feel the need to prove thier Existance and the Existance of others. Its not real untill science Proves it real. Yet here we are. 2007. and with things that people from centuries past said "Aren't real" & "Couldn't Happen". What will Science Prove Exists a hundred years from now about things that have been around for Centuries before?

the way they are portrade in movies id fiction but vampires as blood drinkers are fact. There are in fact bats that drink blood and blood only but dont go out and turn into humans after they feed.

So in theory Vampires fall in both categories

lol Yes!!!! What is Fiction one day is Fact the Next and Vise Versa. Once Troy was thought to be a mythical place that never existed. Then poof. Some remains are found and Now its Fact. The Same is true for many things. Yet we also look the "Fact" Held by many years of Columbus being the first to discover America. Then Poof. Vikings were here before him. And Natives before them.
Reality of Fact and Fiction is so fluid that the mind can dream and change the very nature of the laws of physics overnight. Myth & Fact. Existance & Nonexistance are all just a state of mind, and is just as prone to change as the weather.

Fact. You want to know my reason?

Breathing in air. Fact or fiction? How do you know it exists? Can you defend your argument, even if the entire world argues it?

Same concept when I am asked the question about the existance of true Vampirism. I live it, therefore I know it exists.

Vampires as in folklore vampires? Fiction.
Vampires who feed from drinking blood, taking energy, etc., fact.

As for lycanthropes, I don't believe that they exist as actual shapeshifters, moreso as humans with animal like qualities.
Like vampires, people who believe in vampires know that they don't actually die during the day and wake up at night as a bloodthirsty fiend.

Intersting research Upir!!
Why the vapires don`t write?
But only in fiction works vampires are intelligent and diabolical creatures.
In the folklore vampires are just revenants who are attracted by the living(not only sexual...I think there are many kinds of vampires types in folklore...at least in the romanian one).
I must say that the body cells have a different tolerance at the severe lack of oxigen. The nervous cells are the most frail ones:only 5 - 10 minutes or so.
So the dead are not so intelligent if they are ressurected creatures.
(see the modern explanations about the zombies)

Think about it, There are already creatures that live purely from blood, so, couldent they just...pick and mix genes and make a vampire?

My view of the matter is... well... a bit of both sides.

Do I believe that there is a race which survives on drinking the blood of humans and has an allergic reaction to garlic as well as skin issues that cause them to be incapable of feeling daylight?

No, not really.

I think that some people have blood fetishes. I, myself, being on that list. I don't say that to appear tough and strange. I just do. Enough said.

The myths have been attacked by the media, so, when we think of vampires, generally we have this campy version of a blood sucking man with dark hair descending upon a cleavage-displaying victim in white. What we've seen in B-movies has dominated our views. Of course it's hard to believe crap like that.

But... are there people who thrive off of drinking blood? Who get excited when blood is on their lips and hands? Who simply prefer the dark?

Sure.
I do.
Does that mean that I can't live without it? No. And I would be pressed to believe anyone who claimed that without blood in their mouths and the moon over head, they would perish.

So, I guess... define vampire.
Are you asking if there is a separate race out there?
Or are you asking if people drink blood now and then?

: )

Fiction, fiction, fiction. Granted, some people believe it so strongly that it becomes their reality, but as for people literally surviving off the psychic energies, or purely the blood, of another living being?

Bullshit.

And I will continue to say otherwise until proven wrong. At which point I will gladly and gleefully say that I was deliciously wrong.

-------------------------

Ok. There are so many things wrong with this that it hurts my brain.

I will highlight the most obvious illogical statements.

#1) Science has not even come close to reaching it's limits of understanding. Quite the opposite. Science is still barely scratching the surface and new things are learned every day.

#2) Comparing vamprisim to space flight and splitting the atom is foolish. Vamprisim is a myth that has existed in many forms for many centuries. Space flight and splitting the atom weren't even options in mans mind til recently. Hell, we didn't even know the atom existed til the last century.

#3) And this is the big one. The person(s) trying to prove something have THE BURDEN OF PROOF!!! READ THAT AGAIN!!! It is not up to those who disbelieve in vampires to prove they don't exist. It is up to YOU the BELIEVERS to bring the Burden of Proof. That's how science works. And it does work. Hence the computer people have used to make blatantly ignorant statements, works.

Man. It's like people refuse to support the very thing that has given us all this technology. SCIENCE!

So. Take the burden of proof and prove vampires exist.

So the burden of

Sounds like ur lycan post was interesting. of course it would be slammed. many of the fiction geared posts are but that does not change the greatness of it as a thread. wish i could have posted in that one as well, as i like these kinds of posts best.

as far as the vamp question... i have only recently learned of this virus theory. sounds like a total possibility. ( as i tend to believe because i have no reason not to. the gov hides many things from us.)

I think the answer you seek, however, is going to be broad. because to me, i believe there are real vamps out there. the immortal kind. but do i know for a fact... no. the answer to this question depends souly on each person individually. its all about perception. how you want to see it.

in my opinion... there are real vamps. there is a thin line between fact and fiction... its deciding where that line is, thats the hard part.

sure, right... :X

listen, what Hollywood represents in the movies, is just a little bit of what real, supernatural vampires can do... they can not go out in the sun, but they can walk in the daylight, on a cloudy day (that's why they love England and other countries like this) crosses do not have any effect on them... and they can move really fast, fly with certain limits, induce thoughts and much more... and human blood is not a vital thing to them... myth's... yeah... sure... :X
