This is a unique question that does not relate to any religion but just a metaphor for a place known to be the eternal punishment of mankind. The relationship about wether or not a suffering place like hell is a source of energy is relevant to many perspectives.
One of which is my own; I believe it is both Endothermic and Exothermic because even though hell would have the best source of heat who in this case might be the devil itself heat would also atract more heat.
What is your opinion on this subject?
I think it is a different realm entirely -- not the core of the earth.
I never mentioned that Hell was in the core of the earth but indeed there is plenty of heat in the core of the earth because of lava. I agree that Hell is a different realm.
But even though Hell is another realm can it it create its own energy or does it get the energy from some where else?
Hell is mythological place, but this aside, the present views on what hell is makes it illogical for the devil to be the source of heat since the being can leave it and yet the place remain a burning place. His presence does not affect the temperature the degree of heat that exist, the devil do radiate heat as per mythology but he is not the source of it, otherwise he would never be able to leave hell cause by doing so hell would cease to exist., as it is represented.
I was doing some research and found a humerous response to this topic:

The following is an actual question given on a McGill University chemistry mid-term Exam paper:
Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)? Support your answer with a proof
Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyles Law (gas cools off when it expands and heats up when it is compressed) or some variant.
One student, however, wrote the following:
First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So, we need to know the rate that souls are moving into Hell and the rate they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Some of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there are more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that most people and their souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially.
Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyles Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand as souls are added.
This gives two possibilities.
1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose.
2. Of course, if Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.

Is Hell Exothermic or Endothermic?
It's exothermic. It gives off energy that manifests itself as evil in our world, urging individuals to do evil work and thusly be sent there at the end of their days.
Not that I believe in Hell is an afterlife....
but let me play "Devil's Advocate".
Who says Hell is hot?
before Dante's Inferno... Hell had no flames!
various religions believed that Hell was a TORTURE....
The Greeks believed that the Underworld for the damned was about great pain and punishment.
it was only after Dante published "the Inferno" did Christianity adopt the Firey hell we know today.....
But even so.... many philosophers and writers wrote about a Hell where there is no fire, but actually created to suit the individual it's ment to punish....
So unless someone can actually Die, go to hell, manage to escape, and tell us what Hell is actually like......
We will not have an answer to the question at hand.
:)
if it exists it is not torture rather fun
would you define the two terms here in the thread
never mind i see someone has, neither gives off or absorbs... it is heat
Atheism solves a lot of problems hehe.
Though, I do have more believe in hell than heaven.
I wanted to add to the response given by PsiVampire. I did some searching of my own, and found this as an alternate answer to whether or not it is 1 or 2.
So which is it?
If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa
during my Freshman year that, "it will be a cold day
in Hell before I sleep with you, and take into account
the fact that I slept with her last night, then number
two must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is
exothermic and has already frozen over.
The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has
frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any
more souls and is therefore, extinct...leaving only
Heaven thereby proving the existence of a divine being
which explains why, last night, Teresa kept shouting
"Oh my God."
well, hell could be another realm. seeing as how they say heaven is in the clouds, but we know for damn sure it's not, then hell must not be either. I know I'm atheist, but I just throw things out there. Or maybe heaven and hell are on earth, you can only see them when you're dead.... like, if you die, then you'll go up to the clouds and there will be castles and fountains and all that other happy-go-lucky shit.
Where is Hell? Who created it? Blah Blah, if it exists, we are there right now.
HHW the opinion that we are in hell now is rather self-centered and assumes a great deal.
Personally I don't care if it's "hot or cold" the point of hell is to punish those who are truly evil.
That is a very unique wayt of looking at it. But the only way to truely find out is to find out what makes hell so hot.
Hell does exist in any literal sense. It exists as heaven does, as the way in which your soul is tortured or not tortured after you passed on. If you believe in reincarnation, you being condemned to hell, could be that you have a hellish existance in that next life for example. If you don't believe in reincarnation/afterlife, then to me hell could be the condition your sould is condemned to exist in once you are dead. The soul in my oppinion, whether there's an afterlife or not, never dies. It continues to exist in some way or another, whether its recycled and reborn in some on other being or apparition. So hell to me would be the state that your soul becomes mired in once you're body is dead. The soul is condemned to a hellish state for example, and will exist like that for the rest of it's journey, in whatever body or apparition it continues its inhabitance in.
Mistype in my last post, I meant to type it DOESN'T exist in any literal sense.
i think it all heat. It's hot because for most ppl hot weather makes us miserable, cold weather does too but it numbs us so its not as bad.
The Sun is exothermic because it gives out its own heat, the planets like the Earth would also be exothermic, it gives of its own heat from its core. Hell would be endothermic because it absorbs heat from the Earths core. Yes the answer is both.
I think when person is punished to hell, the all five elements goes on punishing person very punitive and ges against its each wishes even goes against the wishes to die, the spirit, inner, materialistic body, inner and the thoughts get tortured while mind kept free for torture. This is hell.
I think hell is consider fire and brimstone because that is what we picture as hell. I am not sure that is the case. I think that the idea of hell is going to be different for each person kinda of like your own personal hell. If you like fire and brimstone you will be in water and ice.
I really like psivampire's answer, I believe that pretty much sums it up. hell will either explode upon us all if it exists or will freeze over at which point the expression i wont do it till hell freezes over could in turn cause a many person a whole krap load of problems to be faced all at once. lol
I think it is heat due to the fact that every movie, book etc... Says hell is all hot and there for pure punishment..
that is a great responce, even though I do not believe in heaven or hell, justgoing from what the nuns drilled in my head as a kid
Profane said it the best. 'Hell' leaks out into our current world and causes all the evil.
I think that to answer this question...one must first believe in the Christian version of heaven or hell but for the sake of argument...I feel that hell is a personal thing. Always changing from person to person...everyone has a personal hell.
There is no hell and no heaven...
death is absolute nothingness...
live your life now tool bearing primates...

So which is it? If we accept the postulate given to me by Ms. Teresa Banyan during my Freshman year, "...that it will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you", and take into account the fact that I still have not succeeded in having sexual relations with her, then, #2 cannot be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and will not freeze.
Sorry, vampyregoddess74, but going by your belief it is both, I have to ask: Do you even know what endo- and exothermic is?
Per definition one excludes the other.
I'm not sure I believe in the concept, but if I did I would guess that it was another dimension of sorts, realm, etc.
well it can not be heat, coz after certain level heat does not bother person, heat can punish materialistic body but what about persn slept in koma or unconscious state? that time heat does not effect. these are veils to materialistic body only and true iner free from these senses that have shield of conscious, but if conscious tortured that pain is painful than pain to body.
i dont know what to really believe. I think it's kind of both really. at some point it has to absorb the heat and at another point it has to give it off. So i'll say both. :)
My thoughts on the place called hell, Is like some people believe about the diffrent parts of hell or seven circles which it is more commonly known, where there are parts of it which are unbearibly hot, and places where they are unbearibly cold...
I don't think that really answers your question...
but I think hell would be a collection ground of negitive energy which I always associated with as hot...so I gues that would be endothermic...
i don't care what the true purpose of hell is, or what religious scriptures say about but i do beleive hell must be another plane of existence. Almost like another dimension
I believe hell is a metaphor for the pain we feal after commiting a bad life. It is the pain of seperation from Godliness... It is the pain of alienation from love (God.) So I should think that it is a cold that burns, and maybe a personal rage against love (God); however, just like all anger, if it is directed at someone who loves us... it is impotent in it's transfer.
If we equate heat to these negative attitudes then hell must be a place that attracts this heat and would have no affect on anyone that has not turned their face from love.
Endothermic.
a forcefield was made by the leprichauns and fairies to isolate the minitaurs and hellhounds absorbs so much heat to keep that it cancels out any exothermic tendancies hell has. and the unicorns have trodded a trench around the forcefield and the woodnymphs filled it with fresh springwater in case the forcfield breaks down.
I still like the thought that each individual has their own personal hell, to deprive them of what they could not stand the most in the world along with annoy and hurt and cause pain in a new level
