Whether it's the loss of some loved one, tramatic experiences, and things like that, when you have dreams with one key piece in it every night that does not leave you alone, what are some ways to block it from haunting your dreams, or stop it in general?
dreams of the past always seem to haunt us, especially me, my brothers death is still occurring after 10 years, but why supress this, eventually the doors of our mind will trapp it within. and will vanish, the dreams of yester year give us passion to write to draw and live life how we see fit. I donnot know the answer for surpressing them except amnesia.
Well the dreams I am speaking of are not ever once and a while, it's an evrytime you sleep thing
maybe something before you go to bed or a tingle in the mind that shows these visions that you wish not to see, maybe a different routine or listen to music when you sleep to stray the mind from these ill fated memories.
Maybe there is something you need to handle in the real world? Could be, that your dreams are giving you a more symbolic direction than literal. Granted, I don't have the foggiest idea what the details of your dream are.
Well, I don't want to go to too much detail, it's someone i was closest to in my life, not family, but... ended on bad terms, was fine for the longest time, untill recently they just will not stay out of my dreams.
As far as methods, i do listen to music when i sleep, or a tv, anything like that actualy helps sleep. but as far as what i mentoned before it's starting to drive me back to insomnia lol.
I mean this to be an in general thread though, not directed to me, i just wish to see peoples ideas and insights
i have found a dream journal can be quite helpful , document it daily after a set amount of time go over it and compare the dreams afterwards meditate on the similairities an answer should come
If your having this dream every time you sleep then I would say that you need to take care of whatever it was that caused it to begin with as *unfinished business/relationship* Our subconscience will tell us things through our dreams and we just need to listen to what it is saying and act on it, as a journal was mentioned it could help you figure out what it is you need to do to put your mind and dreams to rest as to say.... good luck with it.
Mostly, I agree with the person above me.
When you're having something extremely repitive in your dreams, your subconscience is telling you something, or trying to. Of course, it's not always right, but its bothering you, to say the least. If it has to do with a person, and they're still alive, try to talk or mend things with them, if its possible. Find a way to make peace with the problem in your mind.
*draws attention away from DE* I write down dreams all the time. I have many that I have had more than once throughout my life. Some may start and I know right away that it's one of my nightmares that I do not find amusement in. Sometimes, I am able to take control of the dream and switch things around to where I don't get jostled and other times, I end up riding it out and often freaked out. Sometimes, talking out details gets me to notice something I might have gleaned over while writing. Since my dreams are WAY out there, I tend not to talk about them too much.
I was tormented by reaccuring nightmares of an event and learned to program my dreams using meditation and focused thought. It took a while to get it right but it worked for me.
i don't know
my experiences of the past haunt me when i am awake...
in my dreams they are vivid...
i try to read a book before i go to bed
or stay up really late so that when i go to bed....
i don't really dreams
i just drift into the blackness....
I really dont think we have any control ovr our dreams. It seems to me something that needs to be taken care of
Many people have the same or a similar dream many times, over either a short period of time or their lifetime. Recurring dreams usually mean there is something in your life you've not acknowledged that is causing stress of some sort. The dream repeats because you have not corrected the problem. Another theory is that people who experience recurring dreams have some sort of trauma in their past they are trying to deal with. In this case, the dreams tend to lessen with time.

Hypnotherapy has been a long standing method to find out more about your dreams and solutions to them. Might be an idea albeit a costly one.
once you sub contiously let that person go the dreams should stop
Perhaps you should delve deeper into what this person meant to you, and look for aspects of their personality that mirrors yours. I feel that there is a message here for you just your not getting it. Or there is something that you haven't dealt with and need to, so you can move forward in your life.
I would write down the dreams each night and note anything that occurs regularly or seems out of place.
You can also ask the universe to be more clearer in its message to you so that you can better understand what your being told.
maybe these dream haunt you because they are trying to tell you something about your life or actions..
Honestly, to get over it. Move on past the event in question. You wouldn't think about it, even subconsciously, if you were completely over the matter.
when you have some time to yourself..
sit or lay back and start to breath long slow deep inhales and exhales.go thru your thoughts and try to bring up the emotions.this may not be pleasant.but try to bring those emotions up and then let your mind find all the other times you have felt those ways.your mind will jump around, just keep breathing.this will move the energy within you to free it up.
the main thing to keep in mind is to look at these events while you do this is to be a witness to them.3rd person.just see without judgment of yourself or others.
you may start to notice a pattern or belief that has brought you to those reactions and emotions.decide if its worth changing.
this is simple but very effective if you do this often.
the dreams are trying to process the emotional energy..this will help.best of luck.
For me I think of as many good things as I can before I sleep.
yah...you might try some sort of guided meditation when drifting off to sleep to put your mind on another track.
Meditation is great, but takes time to master and still may not work in that capacity. Each person channels their thought differently. Some people are able to sleep with earphones playing music, some listen to books on audio, some need to take medication in order not to wake up in a panic.
Ahh i have found meditation does serve to help a decent amount :)
Ask your doc for sleeping pills they`ll nock you out cold you want dream a thing :D
I definitely agree that past events haunt you in your dreams in some form or another. Mostly it is something bad that happened, but then again you could also dream about something really good.
Well I dont think u have control over your dreams. At least I havent been able to. Ive been having a reoccurring dream for the past 7 years of past events i wish to forget. but the dreams just wont go away so now dont sleep much and when i do i try to deal with the dreams best i can. I found sleeping pills worked because the knockout factor i didnt remember anything when i woke up in the morning but there really not good for u and u can became dependent on them.
In time you can control dreams, but it takes some time, or when you have a dream if it is clear in the morning, think on it and look that dream up see what it means, it may be a sign telling you to do something, then maybe it will go away.
I found that when i was steady dwelling on some matter that when i got a notebook and wrote all my thoughts about the situation and person or people involved down on paper; it seemed to clear the problems out of my head for the most part.
It might not work on everyone but apparently i had the anger and hurt from the situation with them bottled up and was not letting go of it so it continually nagged at me until i got it out of my mind and put it down in that notebook.
After that i seemed to sleep much better until the next situation cropped up.
Book on interperting dreams can come in handy, Dreams are the 'key' to life or 'another life' and dont always appear to be all they seem.
Indeed, in death is good, many dreams can mean nothing at all but some are the most obvious warnings or symbols that are good, you just have to open your mind to the higher thought.
I know, myself after my car accident I had the craziest dreams, and they really scared me, and I have had other strange dreamds after attending freinds and familis funerals i the lasy couple of years as well
dreams are strange and will always appear strange because we dont fully understand them and half the time can remember them.
I have had dreams of past events. They pertain to the "subject" but are totally bizarre. Most of the reoccurring dreams are of events which have upset me in some way or another. These are the dreams that I find myself remembering. I have found that over time, they tend to diminish. But I have to agree with others; that maybe you try some meditation before sleep, or maybe yoga.
I believe your dreams are your subconscious telling you something. A good website for dream meanings is dreammood.com - once you deal with what the dreams actually mean in your waking life you may stop having them altogether. :)
I keep having dreams about my grandfathers death, though it has been 2 years, I know what the deal is. I have yet to see his grave, I belive that seeing where he rest will stop the nightmares. I will let you know once i've made the visit.
I was about to say that Mrs, you should go a see his grave. go talk to him, the dreams may still be in the back of your head, if they continue hawever, try and get to the source of the dream and in a way deal with it, maybe its telling what you need to do in order to stop it.
After my brother's death in 1981 I had dreams every night about it for a long time. I missed a lot of school because of them. Then one day they just went away on their own.
I don't try and stop them I let them run there course they will stop.
I sometimes remember people in dreams whom I haven't seen in YEARS. Especially "The Ex". Sometimes the clarity of remembrance is downright creepy. BTW, these dreams are never good. But they just don't seem to ever completely go away...
they all speak to us in different ways, we need to look at the deeper meaning in all dreams there is a meaning we just need to realize what that is
Sometimes they are there to help us with what we need to do
you can learn to controle your dreams to stear your self away from said dreams
i dream about bad things all the time. i cant stop myself from doing so.. tho sometimes all i dream about is pitch black static.
Controlling dreams is a discipline that is not possible for everyone to master.
Sleeping pills may help you sleep, but sometimes you will continue to have nightmares, but not be able to wake up...which pisses me right off when I do wake up.
For the most part...maintaining a relaxing atmosphere prior to bedtime helps a lot. Thinking about something that truly makes you happy and relaxed, playing something relaxing in your cd player, yada yada...
the nightmares may still happen after all this, but for me, they haven't been as bad as they used to be ;)
I have been having an experience like that lately. My grandmother past a couple years ago, she was one of the most important people in my life, it was very traumatic. I'm still having dreams where she's there and alive and then she dies and there is nothing I can do. I hate nightmares. I dont know how to stop it.
past haunting dreams dont scare me my loved ones just let me that there around
Dreams are the subconscious trying to get through...so it could be fair to say, that once you recognize what is bothering you subconsciously, then the one element that is bothering you would go away.
My brother committed suicide in October of 1981 & for the longest time after that I would have this same dream that I was at the coffin looking at him & he would sit up with a butcher knife telling me he died & knows how it feels & now it was my turn to die. I never understood it because we were pretty close. One day I finally went to visit his grave & sat there & talked to him about the dream & what effects it was having on me. After that the dreams stopped.
If you ever find out how
call me
I have very intense dreams
I just commented on a post
regarding the same thing
I have repetitive dreams
usually in the same place
same situations
I believe I perished in a tsunami
in a past life because since I
was a child I have these vivid dreams
about seeing a huge tsunami wave
I have been haunted by these dreams
all my life
Sorry for the mispost
Anyway some dreams will haunt you till your last breath. most of the time its to do with a great lost that has scared your soul. there is no way to loose these dreams. we cant block them. even if we try.
I have wondered this more than a few times as there are a couple dreams i continue having that stem from childhood incidents.
If they could be blocked it would be nice but feel to do that you would most likely have to have a way to totally wipe out that part of your memory.
I think I know what you're talking about. For a long time I had flashbacks whenever i slept of the things that I had done in my past. At one point it was so bad that i couldn't sleep, and if I did, I would get violently ill when I woke up. What I did to get rid of the thoughts was faced them head on. At first it was worse. But then I started talking to people about it all, and they went away. Every now and then i still get flashbacks in my dreams, but it's not nearly as bad as before.

Don't be so quick to blame it on 'haunting', it's most likely plain old unresolved memories that could use counseling for reconciliation.
Well, my fiance was murdered in 2001 and I still have dreams every night. I ahve not found a way to stop these dreams.

My dreams won't stop because I'm afraid. I was made to go see a shrink about it. I was told that I have night terrors, a form of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Night terrors are special in that when you wake up, the dream doesn't leave you. It follows you out into the real world. I know them for what they are but it doesn't stop the fact that I still see them. It doesn't stop the fact that I am constantly looking over my shoulder, screaming and ducking from things that no one else cann see. The therapist has told me that until I come to terms with my fears and can face them and get rid of them, I will keep dreaming and I will always be afraid.
I know what you mean....for a while there it truly felt like a person from my past was haunting my dreams, and it got to the point that I dreaded going to sleep.
But just when I seemed to get to a point where it didn't bother me anymore, whether he was in my dreams or not, I stopped dreaming about him.
It was almost like I had come to terms about the situation to make the dreams stop...hope this helps!
dreams are very mysterious. i have ways that i crontrol what i dream about. some people don't believe in my ways
I think that eventually the dream will leave you alone but until I think that it'll stay with you.
I have seen my girl do this when she has a reoccuring dream.
A prayer before sleeping and light a candle. Meditate on the person who is haunting your dreams. Ask yourself why it bothers you. Then contemplate on why it shouldn't. Even trying to speak to this person one more time will end the dreams as you are at a place where you have unfinished business.
Once this is done you shall be fine.
Honestly, I don't think there is a way to stop it. I think you have to just let it work itself out.
My belief is Hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming would be the right way to achieve issues with anyone who has with nightmares and PTS, but I'm very bias.
I have often found that it is always the subconscious and choice that holds recovery back. It's a form of self sabotage.
My parents obtained a device many years ago because I suffered terrible nightmares. What it did was to recognise when I went into REM. When this happened it would send a mild shock into my body and the object was for me to recognise in the dream the shock. A bit barbaric but it worked. Then I had the glasses which use light while your in the REM state which were a better concept.
So now when you can find someway of telling yourself that your dreaming then you are now on the first step of being able to take control, or through choice, go with the flow.
Keeping a journal can be helpful, also you can control your dreams the key to it is to realize you are in a dream, once you do that you can control the dream.
