I believe that everyone needs something to believe in. Since we are all diffrent, we tend to pull together in like groups (the diffrent religions), and then go on from there. Alot of religions say that they are right and any other is wrong, this ,obviously, leads to strife and contention. I think that all religions have something good to offer, and the only way to really go wrong, is to believe that your religion is the only correct one.(of course there are the laws of the land we all need to follow) Just because I find"truth" in one thing, and someone else finds "truth" in another, doesn't mean either of us are wrong. It simply means we have found our own path to follow. In saying all of this, I guess I'd have to say religion would be a way of life.

I feel it is a form of brainwashing for the most part, but again, as others have said it's good to believe in something.

It doesn't necissarily have to be religion, but an idea, etc.

Mst religions-- at least in this area -- there are like 5-8 difeent versions of the sam damned thing. To me, breaking into even smaller cliques as it were, weakens the potitential of salvation in their community.

Not that they'll listen to the solitary, ecclectic Wicacn on this, but bah.

I, personally, DO have reilgious beliefs, but they do not conform to any specific religion. Most of what I believe comes from MY interpretation of what I believe the Bible is saying, not from what some person standing in the front of a church tells me to believe. If I have questions, I will ask that person, but if they aren't answered to my satisfaction, I'll ask another, then another, then another until I am satisfied. Everyone needs something to believe in, but NOONE will know whether it's for real or a waste of time until the end. Until such a time occurs, I prefer to have a "happy place" to go to to chill out and recharge. As a single mom, I do need a back-up system, even if it's in my own mind.

I believe that it can be either or, but of course that’s depending on the believer or non-believer for that matter. One of the reasons why I believe that it can be a form of brainwashing is plain and simply my aunt and the way that she acts. She’s a missionary who’s very religious, as in she travels all over the world to promote her religion and everything. Well she thinks that the devil is going to take my soul and that I'm going to burn for eternity in hell just because I don't believe in God so she's always sending me these religious pamphlets and books to try and 'save' me, her words not mine. She’s so caught up in her religious beliefs that it seems like her only goal is to convert people to her way of thinking and acting no matter the cost and if for some reason she fails then they’re basically not worth her time. I also believe that it can be a way of life because you choose your own path and way of living, but I mostly believe that it, or at least most forms of religion, is a form of brainwashing. Sorry, I didn't mean to get so personal there, but that was the only way that I could think of to explain it all.

You know what I've noticed? in general, I mean... not really here in this thread...
"God forgives all of his children."
and then it's...
"If you don't do it this way, you're gonna burn forever in the fires of hell!!"
but....we ALWAYS have the ever faithfull (no punn intended there)
"Go to church, light a candle, confess your sins of the past week or so and you're all good."
Confessionals never made any sense to me. if it wipes it off God's books... i want those traffic tickets taken off my record...

Self serving DMV plicks...

Post thought here, kiddies....
I let out with this one last night and I thought it appropriate to go here since according to "normal people" I'm going to go STRAIGHT to hell for praying to Gods/Goddesses older than the paper the Bible was written on...

"...I mean hey... If I'm goin to Hell, then I'm set... Cause MY handbasket has heated leather seats and an XBox in the back...I'm workin on a points system here, brother..."
hehehe
I thought that was cute, figured I'd share.

I used to play around until I found some answers. I just knocked on some wrong doors is all.
Religion is an interpretation, a point of view.
But in most cases, it will bring with it severe spoon feeding, lack of freedom, needless taboos, and the like

I studied christian religion deeply once, and the theosophical arguments brought about can be very good moral guidelines, but as I said, it is just to tight, no freedom of expression whatsoever.

At the moment, I'm just reflecting on past mistakes and wrong choices in this field, and I wonder....

I think it's good to believe in something, and most religions have good morals in them to live by. For example christianity... basically they scare you into being good by setting rules like, 'thou shalt not steal' and saying that if you disobey your soul will be tortured for eternity in hell.

I think we all need a superior, something or someone to turn to when we need help, and a bit of affirmation that something will always be there to support you, and help you make your way through life.

Many religions however are based on brainwashing, and have things like sacrifices for an invisble entity of the divine that we can't even prove exsists.

When it comes down to it, all religions and point of views are so different that it probably doesn't matter too greatly, it's just what you believe is real.
If you believe it's real, then it is. Like Santa Clause :)

we humans must always feel the need to have something to believe in, hence the reason to have religions. its not right in my opinion, but thats just whhat id say. what i dont understand is that some religions say that we are al in the same, and have no diferences, others say that we should follow their god, or die. and some also say that no matter what, if you have a religion, your alright. thats something that oneself begs to differ. wars, the split up of all nationalities etc. how can it be so great? i rekon that it is a form of brain wash, because the pretty much "force" you to believe in that stuff, or go to some horrible place that they dare not utter at the preseant moment...

in life there has to be an equall balance of good and evil. the dark in us can only exist if the good in all religions does. you choose which religion to belong to it doesnt choose you so this being the case it has to be a chosen way of life, although once you have made the decision to enter what they choose to throw down your neck is entirly thier choice so just be careful of what you choose i guess!

first off..
all religions would say "WE ARE THE TRUE CHURCH" and then of course comes the details..so that's why people tend to go and join the religious group..
oh well, it's up to YOU if you'd join..
FREE WILL

i have to disagree with you on one point King. i have friends to follow the christian faith and i have heard them state that they believe their faith to be the only true faith and that's fine as they are entitled to that belief. i'm sure there are many out that that proclaim the same thing. granted the wiccan faith doesn't have churches, at least none that i know of, but i have never heard one proclaim that it is the true faith. so not all will say that. the ones i have a problem with are the ones that are so set on that belief that they refuse to accept the existance of other faiths. that to me is wrong. as far as brainwashing goes, i don't think that the 'God' based religions are meant to be used as brainwashing but some use it to their advantage while some make an artform out of it like the televangelists. i haven't been 'brainwashed' as of yet and don't plan on it. i feel that it is a type of brainwashing when people raise their children to believe the way they do based on the fact that well if it's good for me then it's good for them. what may be right for you may not be right for someone else. that is why i will let my children choose their own path instead of me choosing for them.

A lot of the people I know, like The Church of Talk to You Later.. ain't it bizarre the trend over here at least is, the young don't bother about religion but as they grow older they return to the altar again. Maybe its just a cycle of life.

I think religion is something society made. It's as if we need someone over us telling us what is ok and what is not ok to do. Like we need someone by our side all the time, and like we have to look up to somebody, whomever it is.

I agree rabid - I despise religions that proclaim that they are the one and only faith to follow. These people have to realise that not everyone will have the same morals or beliefs, and that is how our society has always been. They could at least be peaceful about it by accepting everyone elses choices and keeping their two cents worth to themselves. A lot less usless war and bickering would happen... but hey that isn't reality.

My opinion is that it is brainwashing and I just dont get it. I am a solitary witch and my Mom is a born again christian now the thing I dont get is that why does everyone have to go to a building and and worship your God. I tried to talk to my Mom about this and she says I worship Satan the funny thing is I dont believe in Satan. But her way is the only way to go. And she lectures me everytime I talk to her and how do I tell her to stop for she is the only family I have.. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There was a post kinda like this on a different message board (AFI), and the person said that religion was an urban legend a few thousand years to old. I don' necessarily agree with that entirely, but who's to say that church officials didn't change written things for their benefit. Yep, I'm rambeling....

Religion means sheep of a flock ... have you ever heard that in a church or on the tele?
People are Sheep they need to be Guided ... in most human's lives they need something of a HIGHER being to make themselves happy or to blame there woes upon :|
I'm sorry to announce I took religions as a corse in highschool ... now technically I FAILED cuz I have no faith and it was stated to me JUST LIKE THAT!! but I passed with an A (92%) becuz of the Papers I handed in simply stating the truths of religions and why it was people follow them
*sighs* either way I don't belive in religion and reading those bibles or scriptures reminds me how pathetic the human race is sometymes .... I have never had the oprtunity to have religion shoved down my throat or in my face *grinz* Just a simple glance at someone that says "god be with you" can give them a chill and make them gasp... thats about as far as it goes for me.

From the time i was 5 'till i was 13 or so , my mom forced mee to go to church with her, i never really listened. i couldn't believe in something that would affect me for an eternity based upon what a human, constant sinner and easily fooled person said. i have to admit i am of the chirstain faith, but i do not believe in it the way churchs tell you how it is and how it ought to be. i have actually taken the time to talk with God, and yes i have had Him talk back to me in response or just in general a whole lot. i basicaly blew off the middle man and went strait to the source. for the most part what they tell you in church has been a misconception of a misconception of a ......, you get the point, for thousands ans thousands of years. they all believe what they do is good, their contant worship, and their notion that if i feel good i am a.o.k. truth is they are not right. satan has been controlling the world pretty much all the time. those BRAINWASHED fools don't get it. yes there is satan and there is hell, i have actually gone to hell before, and i have heard satan speak to me and i have replied. thing is though God's plan is not uniform. all religions need to be around for the good of us all. He has used a wiccan to show me how i can improve my own life, not another chirstan person or what not, i believe that Jesus is the only way to God, most people stop there, what i believe though is that there are many many many..... ways to Jesus. in my mind at least, if there was but one way to "Paradise" ,just one contious straight line, we all would go to hell save a handful
