The lochness monster was first spotted in 1934 by a london surgeon. It has been spotted and photographs have been taken. Is it really a monster or is it a hoax, but there are a lot of stories about it.
There has been a lot of speculation, indeed. I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't exist; but that's not to say the pictures can't be hoaxes.
I actually heard they found out it was an inflatable monster or something
Oh no doubt some of those pictures were hoaxes - but that's not to say Nessie itself doesn't exist. Perhaps a throwback from the dinosaur days...the shape seems to be that of a Plesiosaur and after all, they thought the Coelacanth was extinct...!
If there is something there it might very well be a dinosaur as sharks have been around since those days
Exactly. And crocodiles and iguanas are throwbacks too, so why not Nessie?
I have seen a picture of the Plesiosaur, and it is a perfect match to nessie.
There are plenty of stories about mermaids, more then the lochness monster.. yet mermaids are creatures of myth. A tourist stunt the whole thing.
The mermaid is said to be a fantastical figure taken form the Manatee, or sea-cow - sailors saw these sea creatures which, at a distance, seemed to have the head of a woman and the legs of a fish. The Fiji Mermaid was a hoax made from a fish and a monkey by a conman,'Dr J Griffin, to make money.
No it is real actually real ! If you want your Lochness then let me have my mermaids.. besides there are more stories of mermaids then Lochness.. so it must be more realler..
But don't you think a big sea creature is a little more probable than a half-woman half-fish? Hehe
Not that I'm completely ruling out the existence of mermaids, i'm just stating where the legends came from :-D
Where did the Lochness come from? Physically? How can it exist without procreation? How long has it lived? Where did it's legend start? how many confessions need to be made before it is excepted as a hoax? I actually swam with a mermaid once..
Although I'm far from an expert on evolution, or a palaeontologist, I'm guessing if there IS a Nessie, it came into being the same way all creatures did, through evolution. Whos' to say it didn't procreate?
As for mermaids; yes, there are women who make a living out of being mermaids. There used to be someone on this site who did it. They wear swimfins inside elaborate tails and perform underwater.
I never said Nessie doesn't exist...I think it's more than likely a sea creature of that size could exist. Not necessarily in Loch Ness itself, but a variation on the Loch Ness Monster could live elsewhere...course, that wouldn't be 'Nessie' per se...
This myth dates back from the 7th century by St. Columba that was swiming in the loch had wrote about his sighting of the Loch Ness monster.
Here is St Columba's writtings, and these are his words in this article about his first sighting:
"...(He) raised his holy hand, while all the rest, brethren as well as strangers, were stupefied with terror, and, invoking the name of God, formed the saving sign of the cross in the air, and commanded the ferocious monster, saying, "Thou shalt go no further, nor touch the man; go back with all speed."
Then at the voice of the saint, the monster was terrified, and fled more quickly than if it had been pulled back with ropes, though it had just got so near to Lugne, as he swam, that there was not more than the length of a spear-staff between the man and the beast. Then the brethren seeing that the monster had gone back, and that their comrade Lugne returned to them in the boat safe and sound, were struck with admiration, and gave glory to God in the blessed man. And even the barbarous heathens, who were present, were forced by the greatness of this miracle, which they had seen, to magnify the God of the Christians".
First photo was a fake. Columbus probably seen a large squid or such unknown animal. Nessi is in the lake hiding. The is a outlet into the sea but its to dark to see into w/cameras. So hide Nessi hide from mankind.
I think it exists. Being underwater, it would have survived what killed the rest of the dinosaurs off.
I think nessie might be real, but I ALSO believe that Dabblers mermaids might be real.. Nobody really knows..
Nessie is as real as the rest of the animals on the planet we havent been able to get close enough to study like some of the other recently discovered ones in the deep pacific
Good point. Things are only a monster until we discover it. A thousand years ago, some believe that whales were monsters.
Exactly. I saw a programme not too long ago on Discovery where they were investigating a relative of the squid - bloody weird looking thing it was, and it had only recently been discovered. It lived in really deep waters where it's difficult to get cameras, but had probably been around for centuries. As technology progresses further, we can start to seek out more of the unexplored oceans and perhaps find conclusive proof of sea creatures and Nessies (who isn't by definition a sea creature as Loch Ness is freshwater :-P)
the loch ness monster is hard to prove true or false cause the loch is very deep and not clear to see to the bottom their could be sea creatures in the loch no one has seen because they don't like the light and are not normally found by shore.
It is nice to imagine that there is something beneath the depths of Loch Ness, what fascinates me is the house on that Loch, Boleskine House.
How about this idea?
There could be more then one loch ness monster, because the pictures over the years has different features of the monster on each photo. No animal could live for thousand years, it must be a family hidden somewhere deep in the loch.
The monster could have had a mate and has been breeding over the last thousand year. The ancestors have died and the young has grown old and mated, and they have had young and so on. In each of the photos, its been a different monster over the years.
People were shocked to find the archetuthus, the giants squid. No reason something else couldn't be alive down there.
Well it can be neither proven nore not prove that is exists or not. threw the years people have had maney storys which may or may not have been made up. with with the ever growing minds and the ever advancing technology beiing made it could be easly made up but then agin it could be true who's to really say whats true and what isn't.
*raises hand*
I believe in Nessie!
I have been to the loch twice so far seeking Nessie. While I have never seen her, I certainly do belive. There is a museum in Drumnadrochit that is full of great stuff, both factual and fantastic :)
Nessie is real :)
Yes, I believe there is more than one living in the loch. And because it is so deep, there might be other species we have not discovered, beacuse they never surface.
well I think it would be kool if it is real I mean it could be a Myth for well forever LOL yet, I feel it could be real and it has learned to avoid us and live as it has in quiet and recluse style.
Of course I would love to see it if it is real yet then the scientist would come and want to take it and all that stuff so it is best to just either believe or not believe is my opinion.
I don't believe for one minute that we've discovered every single species to exist on the planet. Nessie, or her worldly variants, is just one of the species to continue to elude us....but we will have proof eventually.
Nessy is real and simliar monsters to Nessy have been found In Lake Champlian and in Lake Oogopoogo
yes mal.. we discover new species of both plant and animal continually. we still have enexplored areas of the earth :) arent undiscovered frontiers exciting :)
Many theroies of nessie have been out there, and a lot of studies done on the lake yet no proof of anything has come to pass, yet many believe she is there, which adds to the mystery, many of the pics have been proven hoaxes, yet some are still being discussed. like many other mysteries we want to believe and to each of us we must decide. i think she may be something and there yet I hold all my beliefs tell something is proven.
One thing that is not disputable is that a hoax photo has created more promotion for Lochness then most promotions for tourist spots. Between big foot, Loch Ness, and ghost houses (usually guest houses)
it never fails to draw the people seeking a glimpse of something, even after they are told it is not there, I think after awhile a town that has such things burn out on the Tall Tale, and the extra traffic becomes intrusive..
I mean imagine living next door to a road side attraction.. at first it is a blessing to the cash register, but soon their is clashes between the tourist and the township.
Especially the one guy that works at the docks, the one that rents the boats, he may have liked the extra pay for a while, but after to much,"Have you seen it?" "Do you believe it exist?"
I want to believe it is real but i think it start out as a hoax or a trick and it went way to far and now it is to far to go back and the town is making way to much money off it..
Given that the story of Loch Ness arose from an unevidenced claim and that several of the supposed photos have since been determined to be hoaxes, I find no more reason to believe that Nessie really exists than to believe that several other prehistoric species, thought to be extinct, actually continue to live and thrive. It's always a possibility but not really a probability.
Remember that multiple research teams have utilized sonar and cameras and have swept the lake and have found absolutely no evidence to support the idea of a real Loch Ness "Monster".
I think it would be exciting to discover a new large species, either thought to be extinct or simply never discovered either through fossil evidence or multiple confirmed sightings of the actual animal. But I don't let my fascination for such things over-ride the evidence or the lack of evidence. I have to stamp this one "MYTH!"
Here is some fun. Nessie has a sister at Lake Erie NY. That is up near Buffalo. Founded /noticed on 11-12-1933. So yes there is more than one. Note also in a very cold ,dark lake. Man these girls are smarter than any technology so far.
Keep hiding there "girls" --beat mankind. : )
Who knows if its real or not.
If you say its real then your insane to the major population.
If you say its a hoax then your dubed 'close minded and unorigional' to the other half of the population...
so who knows, Me personally I think there maybe something there. but really who knows.
Calling people closed minded sucks I agree, if you don't convert to a religion you are harden of the heart, you are immoral...
Open minds seem to catch a lot of clutter, I have an open mind, it also has a screen door.
Some how people are unenlightened.. well if enlightened means having that astonished deer in the headlight look every time someone says, "Para-Normal" then I will stick with soft glowing actual physical phenomena, though I will say, I am impressed with the running time, and second wind of such a myth, turned hoax.
I feel terrible about saying something like this, but chances are its a hoax. someone took and old story and turned it into something that it wasn't. It probably is the same with Bigfoot...or any other mythical creature.
Perhaps the surrounding area wasn't doing so well and they came up with something to create more tourism to boost the economy.
I think it would be great if it did exist But, There would have to be a couple of them to reproduce right! What is their life expectancy? So, if there were a couple of them and their offspring, someone would have to see one of them!! Hmmm! Something to think about!!
who's to say that Nessie is not real. if it is and it is a dinosaure you would think that surviving all this time the creature is more than likely intellegent and knows how to keep out of sight.
ReaperHunt says: "Nessy is real and simliar monsters to Nessy have been found In Lake Champlian and in Lake Oogopoogo"
Yeah Lake Champlain! I lived in Vermont for most of my life around the Burlington area. I swear I've seen Champ. Or somthing similar :P
Oh, And I'm no Geography person. Would there be a way that Nessie could be just a visitor? Is there some way that would be deep enough for her to get from the Ocean into and out of the Lock without being seen? I know there is a species of Shark that is saltwater but can survive in freshwater and has been seen up rivers.
There might be "some" truth to Lochy, but it's more a hoax than anything else
i did see the chupacobra on the news one night. it was the size of a dog and the guys were chasing it while filming it. when it turned around i saw its face, it looked just like some of the drawings that i have seen. it didn't look fake.
so who's to say whats out there.
I wouldn't like to rule out the possibility of Nessie or any other 'mythic' creature being real. There's so much about the world we haven't yet discovered, it'd be extremely closed-minded to refute the possibility completely.
I've seen the Chupicabra video. That's acually my cousin. You know, you suck the blood out of a few goats and then get a reputation. A slippery slope. A warning to all you kids. That video is pretty freaky though.
Extremely closed minded, that is the mentality that propagates the hoax after math. Demeaning those that simply admit they bought a hoax. Why is it that people claim someone is closed minded, or unenlightened because they won't entertain the same far reaching possibility that some cryptozooalogical beast exist, I can imagine many things, I am open to elaborate "ho- could- its" is that not enough for people that take every little thing under "I am open minded, I don't want to appear to have a closed moind.. so I will agree." how about having an open mind to the fact that this was a hoax? An open mind to the fact that no evidence (aside from fake pictures) exist. Of all the possible things that could be found.. Have been looked for .. Imagine, be creative.. but assuming others that have uncluttered their mind from something that appeared at one time to be something that it was not. Fearing being labeled closed minded.. that is the fringe catch phrase.. "By my book and Open You Mind"..
i think Nessy is the real deal.. look at how many other things in our world people said were just myths only to find out they were real
When a false foundation is used as a spring board for a claim then the Claim and all research is to be disregarded.
i think it would be great to see nessie.. But i really think it is hoax..
It coult be an accent dinaosoar If sharks can be around for as long as they say so can dinasoars,
If it is indeed anything it's just a survivor from the Jurassic era.
It's not just one there is Nessi but also Champ & Bessie . so there is three. But probably a large eel type animal. Mates in ocean may spends some time in the lakes.
People always have a tendency to call a monster to everything that they are not used to see , or to deal with!
i believe if it really exists , its just another animal that we are not really aware of , like giant squids and animals like that...
if you have a Scottish or Irish background then you have Nessie in your soul , we believe that yes it is real and I for one do not understand why they do not leave her alone you will never fine her or catch her , sometimes there just is no answer for something it just is, and people need to learn that why do we have to hunt everything and dissect it ? one day it will be us being hunted and looked at funny.

There have been lots of sightings and even pictures taken of the loch ness monster. So I would say its a good possibility that it is real
What if it was found that such a thing existed? What would it benefit us, if I found a dodo bird, or better yet cloned one.. what comes of such a thing existing?
I believe nessi exists or rather maybe did at one time.
With todays economy and lack of preserving abilities with the environment its safe to say if nessi doesnt exist its because nessi died off finally.
I for one watch things on nessi and I havnt heard anything new on this.
Or just like the bermuda triangle as the world changed so did it.
I think the up keep to the hoax got to be too much, every self titled Cryptozoologist has had a run at it.. no one wants to back a horse beater.
The most famous photo taken of the supposed monster was proven to be a hoax. It was something small taken close up so that it looked massive and far away.
I do believe that it is very possible that this creature could exist. I mean there have been way too many strange sightings of this creature for there not to be something more than just people's over active imagination.
Though many have seen the statue of the virgin Mary cry blood and yet it is still a hoax though it has happened nymerous times throughout history.
I can make statues cry, I can make them appear to move, I can make walls "bleed" and when you go to get someone to show, by the time you get back there will be no "blood". I can make ghost appear. I can make spirit photos, show you physical anomalies in a jar.. and It will only cost you the price of admission.. would you pay (after travel expenses) to go on a guided lochness tour?
I see nothing new added to this discussion in this thread, and the topic has been covered ad nauseum recently.
