This is directed at the 'Hollywood style' vampires, not those following a modern vampiric lifestyle.

Apart from the actual vampire bat, does anyone know of any vampire animals and, if not, why not ?

My reasoning is that if a vampire bites anything, there is a good chance that it will become a vampire just after it dies.

So if a vampire was to bite an animal, by choice or a survival situation, then why wouldn't that animal become a vampire ?

Most cross species stuff is prevented by genetics, DNA, body defence mechanisms and so on ... but all of that stops working on death and you have to die before you become a vampire.

Most people will argue that vampires exist but lead a hidden life for some reason. This requires human level logic and planning. Animal vampires won't have any of those abilities and, if you were a cow or a horse, it would be mite difficult to have a hidden life anyway.

While I am on a roll here, what do you think an animal vampire would eat being especially if it was a herbivore to start off with ?

I'd have to say the mosquito is probably the most common 'vampire' type.


But, then again, I think everything could be considered a vampire, could it not? Especially the carnivores.

I was thinking more something that could be bitten by a vampire, like rats, horses, poodles y'know

well animals don't change if they got bite by vamp it's a kill for feeding !!! not turning like humans( some are killed too)


and usually vamp changes into somes animals rats ,spiders. wolfs, bats welll btw it's just an opinion !!!

With the body being dead it can be overrun by maggots and all sorts of things that it would normally shrug off, the cross species argument won't apply when the defences are down, what would stop a bitten horse from becoming a vampire ?

Two types of Hollywood vampire turning, vamp bite=turning or vamp bite, and then taking of vamp blood=turning.

For this reason i think most Hollywood movies if using the biting = turning method will have their vampires feeding only from humans.

I have only seen two examples of vampire animals other than humans or bats. In "A Little Vampire" the local vampire family feed off a herd of cows, leading to 6 vampire cows flying through the sky and dropping cow pats on passing cars. The second example is in "Blade trinity" where the vampire gene was imported into two rottweilers and a Pomeranian. This was done through genetic manipulation not biting.

i liked Bunnicula. you know the cute little bunny from the James Howe book. not a blood sucker but he did suck the juice from the vegetables. :)

I know that vampires feed from animals in order to get what they need in the stories sometimes but they always killed the animal by breaking it's neck first or something like that. Now, if they didn't I think it might be possible for the animal to be a vampire, why not? They share the same diseases and disabilities that humans do (humans are just another species of animal) so one can only assume that they would. However, animals already bite each other enough just getting into fights or without thinking so I'm guessing that if this were to happen, way too many vampires would be created and the world be over run.... But that's just my opinion. lol

MyArmy's response makes alot of sense. i know that animals do not catch the bloodborne diseases that we do. i verified this with a vet years ago. if they were susceptable it would be pretty terrifying.

i have always wonder about this too but to become a vampire whatever causes the body to change (whether its venom, a virus, or just the act of being bit) the heart has to stay beating in order for that venom or virus to reach every part of the body in most stories so i suppose that if a vampire drink until it was positive the heart stopped the animal wouldn't change but i always wondered what if they slipped up then you would have a vampire animal on the loose

there are almost some bats in rain forrest country too.

moonkissed, I am sure that your vet friend was right. Animals do not catch many diseases that human beings do, they have defence mechanisms that stop it. When the animal dies those defence mechanisms shut down and they can catch just about everything. A vampire is surely only created after death when those natural defences are down.

Chalk, whether Count Duckula or Bunnicula were a cartoon or not is still out there for discussion but, please, not on this forum. It is funny that Bram Stoker wrote Dracula on paper and a lot of people belive it to be part true - yet when Cosgrove Hall and James Howe wrote those two great masterpieces for TV it was immediately dismissed as fiction LOL

Everdene, a really good point, if animals don't have souls are they not just one step closer to being an undead vampire and so, more easy to turn ?

Images, yup the kitsune is a great vampire fox - interestingly I can't find out what happens if a kitsune bites a human. Of course the kitsune becomes human form after 100 years, maybe it does all its biting then ?

Probaly going on the fiction of the disease not passsed on from vampire to cow or dog. usually the movies show them as protecters during the slumber time of a vampire.

maybe the chemical make up of animals are not like the system of humans or hollywood has not had time to go on this plasible deal.

in real life i have not heard of any except if you would put a fictional myth the chuycabra in this.

Another reason for the scarcity of animal vampires might be that they would get incinerated by sunlight, unless they were completely nocturnal and had a dark lair that they could use during daylight hours.

Yet we ponder on the vampire strain not effecting dogs, but blade has showed us a version of them, and zombie dogs are not immuned (resident evil). Maybe we have not yet created the perfect vampire dog movie.

I read something somewhere where they say say saber tooth tigers still exist. I think it was in Aden they are sanguinous. allo there is chutacrabra.

i think leeches are what i would consider an animal. they suck blood for sustenance. also, i think if a cow were turned, then it would probbly drink blood. to save money farmers sometimes feed their animals food that has other animals in it, thus mad cow disease.

Animals cannot be turned because, if they are immune to most diseases carried by humans, and they have to be dead for the defenses to be let down, you can't turn a dead animal, or human for that matter, so they can only be resurrected as zombies, etc. And if the animal is the only source of food then the vampire will inevitably need more than said animal holds, therefore draining it dry. If they realize the animal holds more than they need (such as a horse) it is simply killed afterwards or not preyed upon.

That's my opinion anyway. :)

I agree with most they do not sare the same blood and animals eat other animals humans do to but very few do. And vampires drink blood not eat the whole thing lol.

Vampiric animals no how about lycan than,
since they are made up of the same basic traits or zombie, are we justifing it because we have not seen hollywood make this up.

i also agree that if an animal were to be bitten by a vampire; if not completely drained, would become a vampire. and not with a conscience. i think it would try to feed on anything and everything when it is hungry.it would be a menace, a nuisance. a complete disaster!

LordWolf have not seen any vampiric animals in books, yet Blade series brought to life the crossing of the vampiric gene and dogs. is all I have noticed.

If a wolf would bite a vampire would we really notice if it drank blood.
All we would notice is it ripping another animal apart, for us it would be just eating as normal. Plus the lore is a vampire loses its soul, something hollywood will not tough on a animal with a soul. No soul no undead animals.

I think that an animal could possibly be infected and turned into a vampiristic animal, but not a "vampire animal". A "vampire" is knowledgeable. An animal can learn tricks and they have some emotions, but that doesn't make them knowledgeable.

So vampiric or vampiristic is how they would be classified, because other than drinking blood, they would share no other traits with the vampire and it's capabilities in question.

I think I remember reading somewhere there's a bird called the goatsucker which, from what I can remember, drinks the blood of goats, cattle, chicken and horses.

Yet on this hellhounds are not infact to be Vampiric, but actually the body guards of the slumbering vampire. And as for vampiric animals would not be able to carry such a gene or would subcum to the vampiric tendies .

I have not seen or shown ideas of the vampiric gene in animals except Blade. but would love to see some if there is links to them.

I don't think that animals can be changed. My theory is based on the Romero Zombie films. Zombies never attacked/changed any animals. I think that it would be a genetic issue.

Okay, now that I'm done nearly choking to death on the thought of vampire poodles....

I think the Japanese have their own version of vampires, though offhand I dont remember the name. the kitsune from what I've read were more akin to demons or angels, depending on whether or not they were considered to be a Messenger of Inari or not.
Other than that..closest thing I ever saw on kitsunes being vampiric had to do with them being considered dangerous to fauna. They were said to suck the life energy from the natural environment/plant life.

And the "Goat-sucker" mentioned would be the Chupacabra...from primarily Mexico and Cuba I believe. While not considered a real animal, it could be counted as vampiric.

I dont go for the whole 'turned" thing but there are alot of animals that are considered vampiric.Take the Ethiopian Death bird for instance ,which in the end,actually causes a hemorragic disease via poop..or the Vampire squid.They mainly get their vampire lable due to behavior, many of those where already mentioned above.

Chupacabra... myth is very common yet animals that are vampiric is also the myth that has been tried to be introduced here.

Like stated besides bats and misquito the nature of animals that feed on flesh, would this be considered vampiric in nature also.

But we look back at all life on earth, fish, insects and mammals and the scent or taste of blood drives them insane or in a frenzy. Is this due to meat or the actual vampiric need for blood. Just may be both.

i guess if i had to defend the vampires, if vampires exist then that means they have a nature as humans do.

They were born a certain way, given certain guidelines beyond their control. they were reborn so the nature of a vampire is to be hidden and unknown as to not be over runned while they slept or known about. A vampire is not gonna let a thing such as a human ruin them. The ultimate way to prey.
