Do you have recurring dreams?
I often get a dream in which I am hunted by different persons, monsters, vampires, demons. Every dream is different and have different actions, but all the dreams have the same target, they are hunting me and they try to kill me. I am fighting them back, sometimes I have phenomenal forces, but the problem is that I'm very tired when I wake up and I feel pain on the spot where I was hurt in my dream. My friends says that I'm cool having such dreams.
The way it sounds, it seems as though you may be suffering from psychic attacks while you sleep. These attacks could come from fiends that you share aquantances with, old enemies from your past...or even the almighty tug-o-war with the ethereal entities.
Controlling the dreams? Mayhaps not. But, it is rather likely that you may be in the astral and not the dream state when you are being attacked. This you could learn to control in time.
it happens when i feel that my powers are finished but still i don't want them to catch me or to kill me and i tell to my self that it's not real and it's a dream and i succeed to wake up and get it out from this..
but it's very rare..
You seem to have lost me at the part where you say that you fall short of your "powers"? I hope that you are implying in dream powers, that do not exist in the realm of the real world...
When dreaming of nightmares, the mind subconsciously tells itself to WAKE UP when it feels that it is in danger, thus the after math of paranoia of a nightmare. If it continues, I would try either grounding the self, or seeking professional help.
Dreams can be controlled. There are many forms and practices to achieve this "lucid" state. It takes many, many years of self discipline to attain even the chance to lucid dream. In this case however I agree somewhat as above this sounds as if your subconsciouse is trying to communicate to your consciousness that possibly there are forces that may seem greater then you that you must face, but that is only a guess at an interpretation. Study your dreams, look up meanings in a dream dictionary, you might find it informing. I had running dreams from childhood till I was 15. I was always being chased by something bigger, stronger then me and scary. I would awake, after years of feeling tormented, mad that I would run, run, run for my life, I was getting sick and tired of these dreams. Till one night, in my dream, I stopped and turned and faced and fought this monster with the thought that I would probably lose but give it my all and stand up for myself. I woke up during the struggle and was surprised with myself, empowered. I think my feeling sick and tired of it finally sunk into my subconscious. I've only had the dream 4 times in the past 15 years since. Anyway, good luck, do some studying on dreams and yes centering the self is good advice. ~AzriellaRipley ~Julia
Very good topic for discussion!
thank you for your opinion..
on my last dream there was a person, that wanted to know me better, i accepted him to be my friend, but after that he transformed himself in a soul hunter and he tried to absorb my soul, if u know the movies where bad guys pull out the human soul, something like that... (Highlander)
i understand that i have to understant and to examinate my dreams better..
and i know that i'm not the only one who have nightmares...
Note what you are eating prior to bed. Keep clutter out of your sleep area.
Engage in competative activity at least two hours before bed. Consider changing the furniture direction in your room, sometime light, and shadows unfamiliar trip effects in dreams. Lavender scent can defuse sleep anxiety as well.
I have recurring dreams....and yes, they can be controlled. I can usually mentally tell myself that it's just a dream while I am dreaming, and snap myself awake.
Don't listen to anyone that says you cannot control your dreams.
Dream control, or Lucid Dreaming, is an amazing and usually very fun exercise. There are many dreams that are so realistic for me that I can't tell if I'm dreaming or not. I force myself to fly. I also look for clues that I know wouldn't exist in real life. From there on, once I know I'm dreaming, I can either wake myself up or let the dream continue.
Well, I cant control my reaccuring nightmares, even though Ive tried multiple times thoughtout the monthes, its been the same monstor, just diffrent backgrounds as in one night itll be underwater, while the next it could be in a forest
Maybe I can sometimes but I feel your problem. a lot of times I can have a nightmare that leaves me wandering if it was real and I still feel the effects when I wake up. Then when I go back to bed the following night I start thinking about the dream telling myself not to dream about it. This doesnt work, instead I fall to sleep and pick up where I left off or restart the dream.
I have the same problem. Recently, I just spoke to someone about it. I've had recurring dreams, or nightmares, or just a dream, and wake up sore in my legs if I was running...and once even woke up with a scratch on my stomach. I know that I'm dreaming when I'm there. I attempt to alter it, to change it. But lately they seem to be getting darker.
This person suggested that when I attempt to change it, change it for the better, leave, alter it into something that's not dark. I haven't been able to do that yet, but I haven't had any nightmares like mentioned above again either. If all else fails...I force myself to wake up.
I have reoccuring dreams a lot and even sometimes wake up sore.. I dont honestly think evil things are coming to get me but maybe it could have been something i watched or read just coming into my dreams.. Dreams are simply your mind to get your emotions worked through.
Can one control a nightmare? A very interesting question...I would say no generally, but I do recall having some control in the last nightmare I had a few months back...(well - it seemed like control):
I was in a car with friends; we were driving across one of the many bridges here in my area. Suddenly, the car swerved and we flew right over the side into the bay. It was the scariest feeling I ever had, as the dream was very realistic. In the dream, I kept saying 'wake up, wake up', which is probably what I'd be saying in reality, besides crying for 'momma'. In any case, I woke up.
I have always wondered that.. I myself belive we can to a point.
I have tried to controll mine but sadly failed but i am sure there is a way of doing so
I use to have nightmares and waking up drained out and with bruses and redness on my body.
I knwo you can not really control a dream, but you can prevent nightmares most of the time.
I do it, I focus before going to bed and sleep on positive things, I focus on a nice water fontain's sound, a beautiful flower, a nice book of landscape images.
I also listen to classical music ( it works for real) soft melodies, I also try to read when I can a book that is relaxing. I write in my diary the good things that happen today. Even if there is only 1 thing.
When I start with 1 thing, then it leads to another, and another, so in the end I get at least 3 or 5 good positive things that can help me smile and see things good.
So when I go to sleep, I sleep without nightmares, if I get one, ( it still happens, rarely) I focus on one thing and its:: "wake up wake up wake up" I repeat myself to wake up and move a hand or a feet shaking it, and it works.
I was gonna post something that might help then as I was reading the posts Dabbler had already posted exactly what I was gonna say so I completely agree with him. my rule of thumb when having a recurring nightmare is to stop eating altogether 2-4 hours before bed, drink water instead of milk or soda, and do some kind of excercise to wear me out (exactly what dabbler said I know) but in my case the occurences stop and I start having normal dreams again.....
Chronic nightmares are a part of life for me. Nothing I can really do about it, regardless of what others seem to think. So I do the next best thing; I turn them into stories.
Some of my nightmares are so intense that i wake up with blood all over my bed from me hitting myself in the face.
I've had night terrors beginning at the age of 6. As I've gotten older they have stuck with me into adult hood. I still can't wake myself up from them and I can not control them. I deal with it the best I can, however my lovers on the hand do not deal with quite as well. When I yell, cry, or hit, they don't seem to be so understanding. LOL, I guess it's just a karmic punishment
I've read not to eat before going to sleep. It raises the REM sleep pattern when dreams occur. High calorie foods such as ice cream and soda's before sleep being eliminated can help stop bad dreams. Worked for me!
Their are planty of books in relation to dream meanings you can get from your library and see what the dreams are in relation too as well.
i eat before bed all the time...iv not had a single nightmare...besides one time when i wore a ring i found that almost killed me...i kept dying in my dreams every hour i would wake because i wasnt breathing
not sure these much hope controlling what gunna be in or happen during your nightmare, but to switch it a bit i find i can induce one from time to time ,, sounds a bit mad but sometimes dreams are fab and take us to better places for a time,,
last night i though lets see,, all i have to do is have some strong cheese and its quite likely ill dream something!!! funny now ,, which is the whole idea really,, but it was a bit scary last night and i couldn't shake it off ,, it would wake me, as someone said earlier, you tend to be woken during periods of intense danger, problem for me is (if its a bad dream) is i go straight back into the same scenario as soon as i go back to sleep, fine if it a cool dream, last night i was getting a little bothered hahah, more often it makes going to bed a pleasant experience, and more than just sleep!!
Sometimes, the reason that people feel pain in certain spots when they wake up is because when they were getting hurt in the dream, they also hurt themselves in life. It doesn't matter whether they were causing the pain or someone else was causing it in the dream.
Hmm, this could be a great debate, there has been so many views to this subject.
Many experts have used differant means on how to control the subconscious but always to fail. Sedation is the only means to control them, dealing with your issues in life and facing your fears, this is really hard cause you have to dig deep with this, but realistically it will quit eventually will a person feels at ease with oneself.
im pretty sure you can because,,its your mind whats stopping you
Dreams are just a way for your subconscious to let out all the stress and such of the day. Nightmares are the same.
Can you control it? Yes.
How? Stop being so stressed.
well it all depends on what the dream is telling you and if you have a strong will just tell yourself its only a dream sometimes that works.
I agree with the "no food before bed" post. But all in all, when the adolescent is involved with family dramas or home life quarrels, this marks relevancy to the start of nightmares as ~MBK~ has already pointed out with his "stress" post.
Sorry to say it kid, but what you really need to do is: Cry yourself a river, build a bridge and get over it.
Controlling any type of dream is mastering the thought process. This may take many many years, as well as the patience for the venture. There are certain types of mastery in dreams, such as flying, speaking and reading. Depends on which mastery the individual wishes to introduce into their mind, and if their mind is strong enough and up for the task.
I agree that daily striss/strife can manipulate a persons dreams...it's the minds own defense against whats troubling us sometimes. Keep a notebook by your bed and start journaling your dreams. It may be very insightful. Diet, exercise and sleep schedules also can play a role...
I do agree dreams and nightmares do have their place. I have several dream books that even tell you if your being chased in a dream, to make yourself stop and turn around to face it. yes, stress does add to the mix as well
As some of the others have mentioned, Dreams are one of the outlets our body uses to rid itself of stress, other pressures, both psychologically and physically, and may also play over every day events.
Nightmare's usually occur when there is more stress than usual, or there is something on our mind that is bothering us; such as the death of a friend or loved one, a traumatic event, reading or watching a horror book or movie, or just being under more stress than usual.
There are also certain illnesses and mediations that may cause Nightmares.
I came across a page that, although about Childrens' Dream/Nightmares, had some great information.
Nightmares
I rarily have recurring dreams. I have at times controlled them by forcing myself to wake up by thinking of something that triggers my body into waking itself up.
Such as falling off of something which makes my stomach knot up in reality.
Sometimes if a dream is too much for me to handle, i wake up automatically.
Charkiss makes a good point in her post, repressed conflict in ones waking life, can be factored into dreams, confronting, and absolving such inner conflict could well make for a restful sleep, if not subside nightmare frequency, and intensity.
Can we control nightmares? Sure we can. It is actually quite easy. All you have to do is master lucid dreaming which is not that difficult. You teach your self how to remember in a dream that you are dreaming, and there you are! From then on every thought is reality! If there are such uncomfortable dreams such as nightmares, all you need to do is have the motivation to and imagine the means of kicking their butt, and those means materialize in the dream it self, be cause in the mind all thoughts and things are possible!
Have a nice time kicking butt from one handed nuke cannons, to all sorts of mental orders and powers of the mind.
Your inventions depends on you mood.
What ever the f**k you want.
What other points are there important to make? Ha?
Great stuff iinit?
HAHAHAHA!
I don't believe anyone can have full control over their dreams or nightmares, but I do believe we can influence them to point of the nightmares turn into regular dreams. I often have a recurring nightmare of which I won't go into much detail about, but I can't control it, but I've learned to avoid, some day I'll confront it and win. I also think nightmares are always about past or something you fear.
ive never had control of my dreams or my nightmares they just happen for me whether i like it or not
One store- bought item has let me gain full control of my dreams, since the night I got it- the all- famous dream catcher.
I used to have the same problems when I was a little younger
but when I saw this yellow and brown woven "dream catcher" I just loved it!
the look of it completed my room, but I never expected to be able to control what and who I dream about, from the very first night I hung it up above my window
Try the catcher, hun. truthfully, I got mine at the dollar store.
Though you will always wake up exhausted after any kind of dream
