Vampires, being already dead, do not need most normal things required for human life, such as oxygen. They often have a pale appearance, and are cool to the touch from the perspective of humans.
Vampires are sometimes considered to be shape-shifters, though this feature is more commonly present in fiction than in the original folklore.
Some vampires can fly. Sometimes this power is supernatural, other times it is connected to the vampire's ability to turn into flying creatures (e.g., bats, owls, flies) or into lightweight forms (e.g. straw, dust, smoke) and then create winds as a means of propulsion.
Vampires typically cast no shadow and have no reflection. This mythical power is largely confined to European vampiric myths and may be tied to folklore regarding the vampire's lack of a soul. In modern fiction, this may extend to the idea that vampires cannot be photographed.
Some tradititions hold that a vampire cannot enter a house unless he or she is invited in. This concept has been referenced throughout the history of vampire fiction (from Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem Christabel, through Bram Stoker's novel Dracula to Stephen King's novel 'Salem's Lot). Generally, however, after the first time the vampire is invited in he or she can come and go as desired.
Vampire powers are often limited during the day or in daylight. In some cases sunlight may burn or kill vampires, or they may be comatose during the day.
Vampires may be reluctant to enter or cross bodies of water, particularly running water.
Some tales maintain that vampires must return to their native soil before sunrise to take their rest safely. Others place native soil in their coffins, especially if they have relocated.
Vampires in some tales have very specific dietary requirements while others do not. However, most tales of the undead feature vampires that cannot eat (or at least cannot gain nourishment from) normal human food.
Werewolves are sometimes held to become vampires after death, and vampires are frequently held to have the ability to transform themselves into wolves. Many popular books and movies of today tell a story of hatred between vampires and werewolves that would result in the death of one of them if they ever met.
There are things in which vampires have no power against such as garlic, a branch of wild rose, and all things sacred (e.g., holy water, a crucifix, a rosary, or sacred objects from other faiths). This weakness fluctuates depending on the tale. Garlic is confined mostly to European vampire legends. In myths of other regions, other plants of holy or mythical properties sometimes have similar effects. Holy water and other holy symbols depend upon the culture. In Eastern vampiric myths, vampires are often similarly warded by holy devices such as Shintō seals.
There are three main ways to destroy a typical European vampire: a sacred bullet, a wooden stake through the heart, or decapitation. This includes other means of death that effectively removes a vampire's head, such as incinerating the body completely.
Old folklore from Eastern Europe suggests that many vampires suffered from a form of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, being fascinated with counting. Millet or poppy seeds were placed on the ground at the gravesite of a presumed vampire, in order to keep the vampire occupied all night counting. Chinese myths about vampires also state that if a vampire comes across a sack of rice, s/he will have to count all of the grains. Aside from the Muppet character of Count von Count on television's Sesame Street, this characteristic seems to have largely disappeared from popular culture. It was also referenced in an episode of The X-Files.
The vampire myth of Istanbul holds that a vampire may be killed using a silver bullet or silver stake. This ritual may be accompanied with prayers, usually in Arabic, which call for the peace of the soul. An example of this tradition may be found in the novel "The Historian."
MANDUCTION: Meaning simply "eating" , this refers to the buried Vampire's habit of chewing on its shroud or burial clothes. In his treatise Masticatione Mortuorum In Tumulis Liber ("The Eating Dead") (1728), Michael Ranftius lists numerous accounts from witnesses having heard pig-like snorting and snuffling sounds emerging from graves. Once disinterred, it was found that the corpse had devoured some or all of their cerements, and some had even begun eating their own flesh. In one sixteenth-century case, a man and a woman were found chewing on their own intestines.
DIET: On the subject of eating, it is worth persuing the typical Vampire's menu. As well as consuming their own flesh, the revenant willreadily indulge in anthropology, the killing of a human being for cannibalism. A related habit is necrophagy, the eating of corpses that may be many days old.
Bravo! Bravo! Nice work!
I must admit, I am weakened during the day and direct sunlight makes my skin itch.
Good on you two!
the sun does not make my skin itch.however, my eyes are sensative to it, i sleep better during the day, toss and turn at night.and of course love to bite
That is some very interesting stuff. The sun makes me itch and i burn in 5 minutes. But thanks for putting out the info.

Thank you madbeau i understand a lot more about things now that you have posted that info..... I really do appreciate your list
I thought that vampires COULD have a reflection, think a vamp could message me w/an anwser to that. . .
most of everything u have posted is a myth. sunlight does make us weaker, and sometimes sick. we dont like garlic. the rest of that shit is nonsense. it is all based off of movies. and as a vampyre, it kinda pisses me off that humans can actually believe what they see in the movies.
I hope this thread stays around a bit. I've seen several of my threads go bye-bye that deal with true vampiric issues, such as blood substitutes and so on. I thought perhaps this site was more for roleplayers????
i would like to think this site is more information than role play although I have seen some people take it as role play
All of this is good information, but I don't know if it applies to the true vampires...
damn... so many apply to me... lol. Thanks for the info a great thread.
i think undead is different than undead so i would say they need the same stuff as humans
I think there are few things I will have to disagree with on this post as well, but it is a very out-spoken forum.
NO DOUBT THERE ARE ALWAYS LOTS TO GAIN FROM URBAN LEDGONDS
AND YOUR WORK HAS SHONE LIGHT TO THAT FACT
A WELL WORDED THREAD
THKZ
Yeah no kidding were would we be today with out urban-legands.
In many religions mirrors were covered when a person died to prevent their souls from becoming trapped and so they would go on to heaven. Vampires are said to be souless, most likely the reason for the legend of them casting no reflection
One thing I have read is... when a vampirre fights & is weaken to a point to were mortals would be dead... they turn into a gaseous form & must return to thier coffin within a certain time or be forever destroyed....but I cannot remember the time period ~shrugs~ i'll look it up if some1 wants me too... I will look up more in my book as well if any1 would like me too... just message me & tell me i'll write it here & reply to you...
Very intersting i also agree that the sun does irratate my skin though damn sun.
Some of the myths are true and some are not it depends on who is recalling them
all a matter of accuracy & the reliablitity of your source... i for one rely on my book of mythological creatures... doesn't have much in it...but it is more accurate then any other...
Alot of these common traits were put down on paper as the gospel long before medical information could dispel some of these traits as medical conditions. Now that we have the information today that we did not so long ago.. many of the myths can be dispelled.
I beleive throughout all the mythos & legends that many have come to hear & know about vampires have become disorted through the years, but one fact remains whether though race or medical terms Vampirism does exist.
I too am weakened during the day I have problems staying awake
me myself i can stand the sun and i have a reflection, but other male vamps are my weekness
well sun doesnt burn my skin it only hurts my eyes and gives me mindgrains sometimes if not wearing sunglasses. as for the other things i hate garlic if i eat it then it will make me sick. stakes can kill anyone duh. crosses dont work on me. my eyes change color depending on my mood (i was born with dark brown eyes). thats all i can think of as for now.
Wow!!!! that was really informative and that's alot of info there too.
Keep up the good work and please keep the info coming as I'll be back to check on this thread more often.
WhiteSnowWolf
I'm sorry, but I have to say that your description of vampyres are somewhat untrue. We are living breathing beings. We need oxygen to breathe, and we eat food like everybody else. The food to sustain the body we are in and the blood to quench our thirst. We are not pale in complexion, in fact some of us are quite dark. We do, however, have powers that regular beings would not have. We are not afraid of sunlight, although to some it hurts their eyes, hence the sunglasses. We do have a longer life capacity, but other than that we are quite normal.
sun doens burn me a bit but i heal quickly so, im one of ye then i believe but not of a pure blood
Interesting thread.......
The first two posts show the myth fantasy and hollywood, Mardbeaus the more 'signs' that Vampire could/do have.....
for myself.....
Sun I like but not to be out in it I burn....
I am very sensitive to the light....
I am up all night and sleep all day if I can....
I take eergy from whatever I choose
Sex revitalises me
I also 'give' energy in sex and most have said how different they feel after being with me
I attract people without trying
I scare people but they still likeme lol but they can't explain it
I see aura
I am clairvoyant/clairsentient
I have acute psychic gifts
I don't get sick often
I heal quickly
I look a lot younger than my age
(act even younger lol)
though I like garlic and spicy food.......mmmmmm.....doesn't like me much lol
the traits are given in various places as 'proof' of a vampuric nature.
For me, vampire 'feed' off energy, whether through blood or psy energy, though the films and books seem to dwell on the blood more. If one takes that as being vampyric then if you can feel the fed, need the feed.....and that need is a real hunger.........wel then are you not vampyr...
If it's not too much trouble, could those of you posting information from other websites, books or other outside sources include the info on author and publication, links to the site you found it on and so on, so that others could look these things up themselves and compare it with other information they come across?
I know I am always looking for additional sources of information and am sure there are others here who are as well.
*looks at Nastya*
Well most of what you said applies to me as well. With the possible exception of the doesn't get sick often, but then again that could be attributed to the simple fact that I very rarely allow myself any truely "decent" feeding for a number of reasons. Mostly it's a bit here and a bit there. The reasons for that are something I won't get into at the moment though. Personal business and all that.
Oh hush.
Truthfully it comes down to two things.
First and foremost be it blood or energies, I never take from any other then a willing donor.
Second is the simple fact that the last few months I have pretty much been a homebody so to speak and haven't gotten out much, which as a result will limit my contact with people other then my mate who I certainly am not about to drain on a constant basis and my neighbors. And well if you met my neighbors you would know why I would never take anything from them lol.
Yes it makes me feel a serious lack of energy and a general irritability much of the time. But there are good reasons at the moment for my not getting out and feeding like a fiend if you will pardon the pun.
good information, "the vampire watches handbook" basicly backs up all that too.
The post was very informative some info I had never read before. Do you happen to know the author of the book mentioned "The Historian"? I would like to try to find it. thank you.
good info post, even the arguements are enlightening...... the truth us out there for someone to find, someday.
all I can say is that if there are vampires out there then they should be glad to hollywood since it brings so much disbelief while keeping some of the inportant information alive.
mankind is all to well known to destroy what it doesn't know or understand....a little misdirection can't hurt
Excellent research, 10 points :D
Ive read about the counting thing.. people would hang jars of seeds outside their house, and the vampire couldn't enter until they had counted them all. :p
vampires are unique and do not need things like humans do to survive.
Very interesting to see more then just one take on this. I must say the light thing depends. I am human but, i have had past life experince come to me. Bright lights hurt my eyes of any kind but, i have refractions on my eyes. Very nice though that some one has took the time to write all this information down. Great Thread.
(Forgive any topes or misspellings. Please and thank you)
In the case of Human Living Vampires/Vampyres: Vampyres rely on their natural abilities of energy manipulations and clairvoyance to aid in their magickal workings. Vampyres tend to be able to access their natural abilities and instantly shield or banish any unwanted energies. Therefore, purification of the sacred space for rituals is not a lengthy process or focus. Vampyres tend to simply ignore or dismiss any metaphysical properties by their own will. Vampyres can visualize their goals, gather energy from outside sources, and focus and project their own energies faster. Most vampyres practice numerous techniques associated with energy manipulation. Vampyrecrafte refers to magickal techniques specifically designed by vampires to take advantage of their unique abilities. Vampyrecrafte often has a dark flavor to it, although in general it is more of a balance between dark and light techniques."
Many Vampyre Practitioners of the Crafte feel the need to balance the dark and light aspects within themselves. The Vernal and Autumn Equinoxes greatly affect many vampyre's psychic and physical health, which are the days of equal light and dark in nature. Likewise, there is a certain amount of focus that many vampyres need to devote to balance the light and dark aspects of their abilities, personalities, and general health
Vampires obsessed with counting??? I guess among other things, we have OCD too. LOL
*OCD-Obsessive Compulsive Disorder*
The best trait of a fictional vampire, at least to me, is the immortality. Asuming one doesn't slip up and get caught out in the sun. Let's face it, not all vampires are to the right of the hump in the bell curve.
Garlic does bother me but of course with smell 10x greater than a bloodhound its bound to do that. Midday sun does hurt my eyes but i can go out in it. My ability to fly is directly linked to whichever flying form i decide to take. My strength is great of course. I do have a reflection though it is very faint. I commend you on almost precisely narrowing down almost all of the powers of our kind. VERY GOOD!
Actually that is not true. If vampires didn't need oxygen then wouldn't you think they can stay underwater?
wow this is such an informitive thread.. i really like the thoughts on this..if i get any info i will post too.
I like how informative this is, O but I do weaken during the day just like most...
This is good information on vampires, but some might be unture about vampires
interesting post...I hate the sunlight...it gives me headaches...so I am almost always in sunglasses...mythology...there are as many myths as there are countries the stories come from...each simular to a degree with things added or changed along the way.....The thing to ponder most isn't the symptoms but the fact the stories started somewhere for some reason....thats what we should find.
when vampires feed the natural color of there eyes turns to red...
I think for every vampire, theres different myths that are true..
I mean, I know a few vamps on here that love garlic, but I absolutely cant stand it.
Theres some that can stand tha light, and some that cant.
Honestly.. I think everyone has a reflection.. even if you REALLY die, you have a reflection...
Garlic? Bleh! I personally can't stand the stuff... as for the sun thing, I was born a british girl. So vampire or not I am condemned to having burnt skin for the rest of my... life? Ha ha. I think things change from person to person... generation to generation. And I highly doubt that in a few years... or decades (I have no real idea) that we won't be able to classify everyone walking around. Day or night.
I agree with RedQueen...the sun makes my skin itch, makes my eyes hurt...I simply just do not like daylight at all.
Not to start a disagreement here or an argument, but if you notice, most have written, "yes, that myth is follows me", are we talking myths here or reality. How about we post on reality instead of the movies. To many times people refer to inerview with a vampire, which is a great movie, but not reality, it is a movie. MOST people cannot go out in strong sunlight, it gives them headaches and hurts the eyes, thats why they make sunglasses with UV protection. Most people dont like garlic, or should i say garlic doesnt like them. If you are repelled by the cross, maybe its just because you dont believe in it, not that it is physically hurting you. And someone on here said that they can fly, well, I am a seeing is believing person, I would love to see that. Believe me, I am not trying to be agressive here, but lets not talk in myths, lets talk in facts.. It helps much better..
Frankie does have a point, are u living in the real world, or a movie?
if it exists, and u have it, its not a myth, so why are u calling it one?
Thank you Sxxxydarkangel69,
I just get very annoyed for lack of a better word when we are on here to learn and everyone quotes a movie. How are we to learn when we are speaking of fictional characters. We are human beings. Plain and simple. I dont know anyone that can fly or can just live off of blood and no food. Nor do I know anyone that bursts into flames when seeing a cross. And I totally 100 percent believe in Vampires. It just isnt a movie, how about we hear of real life encounters. Now that would be interesting to me. That is the way to learn.
I would have to say that I think most of that is not true. Yes I do not like the sunlight and my eyes are sensitive to bright lights, but I still am continusly around them. As for the garlic thing, I know plenty of vampires who actually like garlic. I think the coldness of the body is not effected by the fact that you are a vampire. My fiance is a vampire and he is always warmer to the touch. I guess that just depends on your body temperature.
madbeau has stolen my words
everyone calls me a hermit because i don't go out during the day i work 2nd shift and stay up on 3rd i sleep on 1st
people just don't see when i go out
i dont like to go out when the mortals are out they destroy my thought process
My biggest problem is that I must wear UV-A /UV-B sunglasses because the sun seriously hurts my eyes..then again most semi bright light does!
Hmmm! much has been learned by reading this! I should hope to learn more!
I've allways enjoyed biting, Bright lights irritate me, can't help statying up late and sleeping during the day allways more restful
all i know is that the sun and bright lightbulbs (like the one they used in schools) hurts my eyes to the point i have to wear sunglasses if not i will get a mindgrain. also the sun doesnt burn me unless i go out in the summertime not wearing any sunblock so my back gets major burned. :(
as for the garlic (yuck/gross) i cant eat that or else i will end up sick.
i love to stay up until around maybe 4am-6am and sleep until noonish if my family lets me.
my bedroom was downstairs nice, cool and dark place. since it only had one small window i blacked it out with black construction paper. (but wishing i could make a coffin for a bed now that will scare away potential buyers of this house if it ever goes on the block for sale. *lol*
as for the coldness in the body i dunno it would depend on my mood i think. (but when i was with my at the time fiance' he waz always warm as vampire but since he is no longer one /long story on that/ i dunno if he is cold or warm blooded and i wouldn't care. :P
for the crosses they dont work on anyone and as for those stakes they can kill anyone vampires or nonvampires. dont even get me started on holy water which is also another myth.
thats whut i think so far for vampires.
oh yeah forgot to mention this :P
i love to bite on a few places heheh and since being a psi vamp is kinda more fun since sexual energy is always the best way to get feedings.
but taking normal energy is a pain in the ass though.
as for the powers goes im working on both of wicca and vampyrism powers though they are both hard to deal with at the same time but i learned to deal.
and i do leave my body sometimes only when im sleeping to go somewhere else to excape from my life.
i know a few people that wouldnt believe me if i told them all this stuff they will think im crazy or just walk away.
thats it i swear unless i come back after a few more postings have been made.
you def put your research into this, i dont have that much knowledge of vampirism, but you learn new things every day. thank you
I think vampire powers depicted by the White-Wolf RPGs are good (yes i know i'm addicted to them)
indeed a lot of knowledge about vampires... and now i will ask a question... all these legends and all these different points of view show that no one really knows what a vampire is... doesnt that show that a vampire is only a maniac human being??
i believe in vampirism cuz i do it too, but my question is... how far will you go to claim that you are like one of those vampires in the legends...
ive enjoyed the read and it nice to see some veiw on the subject. hope some more info could be dug up :D
great information.. I am Light sensitive and tend to burn with any more then 30 mins in the direct sunlight, have always been a night child as my family calls me..
I can say garlic has no effect on true vampyres. That was an old thought of "like repels like". I love garlic, can't get enough. My eyes are light sensitive. I sleep better during the day, and I have trouble going to sleep if it si past 2 am. I am unsure about the other traits of vampyres, but the guy that posted the list seemed to nail some of it on the head.
Lord Dacka
I am about the same..especially light, and having blue eyes does not help either. Get much more energy at night. Just fell much more comfortable at night.
Great research... very informative... its always good to gain new information and i shall file this away in my memory
well from my understanding vamires only eat what they need to sustain their form or entity if you will but the ones they bite and do not turn are the ones who do the eating of other bodies even their own at times if they run out of options
