Okay..I'm sure most of you know the name of Don Henrie. He is the vampire from Mad Mad house and The Secret Lives of Vampires...As far as I know he is one of the first vampires to come out of the coffin...
Now in your view...is this a good thing or do you think that such a person will end up putting us vampires in real graves??
I find it quite unlikely that vampirism will ever be seen as other than a fetish so I very much doubt it will cause any issues.
I thougth that Mad Mad House in general was a good thing. I hoped that it would open a few fo the "normal" people's minds a little about alt life styles. If it has I can't tell.
Sadly I've only seen pictures of the gent.
I've been horribly curious of him, though.
Puro queso is all I have to say about the guy....Pure Cheese in other words.
i felt that he was portrayed fairly, not especially sensaionalized. The only beef I had was the idea that this is what we all look like or act like.
some of us are in buisness suits, and tans. Some in jeans and T-shirts. We are part of all walks of life.
I don't think it's a bad thing. Nothing bad has come out of it yet that I've heard, so I believe it's fine. For now at least...
Why worry, nothing bad will come, and if it does, then oh well.
After hearing him speak I think he's a twit. Pretty snappy dresser though.
Well, I'm a member of his website in which he has a forum and all the vamps there are just as nice as everyone here, that I must say, but I don't know that he's really made an impact in the world at large.
Even with Mad Mad House (great show, they need to do another one), I just don't see that he's made a difference to open people's mind that much, and that is not a reflection on him at all.
I just don't think that the mainstream really took all that much notice of that show, of Henrie, or of anyone else who served as an "Alt." It only served to give them all some recognition in the respective "alternative subcultures," goths, vamps, witches, nature-lovers, vegetarians, whatever. Nothing major, no great change. And that's ok.
As far as the question, I don't think it would hurt us to open people's minds and dispell some of those stupid stereotypes the so-called "normals" have about the rest of us.
Baby steps; we'll get there.
I think he hasn't done anything for us, but he sort of reinforces the stereotype of what a vampire is (the 17th century clothing; albeit be interesting, really does not show us as your neighbour or your grocer now does it?). I think also that part of it he is doing for his own publicity and fame, as some parts it seems to be more or less more of a character than just himself.
For those who watched Mad Mad House, there were a few moments I remember where he would almost break from his persona for half a second or so. I also believe he is a bit of a Marilyn Manson- a guy that could have dreamed up a better version of himself so he wouldn't be so much of a loner (although I am a vampire as well, the way he sort of carries himself and I just have this feeling that he is authentic, yet not authentic)
He is intelligent to say the least. I have read many of his journal entries at his website and he seems genuine, atleast from a knowledge perspective.
i know that people havent changed much, at least at the high school level. When people see me on VR they just scoff and crack jokes. I care little. I just dont think that they are ready.
i think it wont be taken seriously and if then it will be negativised people usually do when they dont understand something or when someone is different ;)
I do agree, Vampyres in some places anyway, mainstream especially....will always be a phase, a 'scene' or experiment.
I believe it wont be a bad thing because people can learn more information about vampires and such if they would be interested of course. But if they don't want to they can just turn the other cheek and walk away.
Most people, I am sure, viewed all or most of the alts as freaks, but did learn something about each alt lifestyle.
Learning is the first step to understanding and acceptance.
I have never heard of the guy before now. I would have to say the worse thing for modern vampires would be the role players insisting they are thousands of years old, and the like. These are the things "normal people" scoff at.
I haven't spoken to Mr Henrie and I only know of what he has written, having not seen his show or the secret lives documentary yet- but the guy gets some decent and respectful responses in threads which discuss him.
As to whether what I think he is doing is good for the concept of vampirism and the community as a whole, there seems to be a pretty even split of yes and no.
My personal view is that there is more which need to be done within before the shades are drawn back.
There are still to many negative factors to consider (or not, as appears to be the case). An example is the extreme cases of both anti-vampyre and those who have a total immersion in the mythos. These people live in a fictionalised world and to give credence to their position can only undermine it all in the long run.
And what of younger ones who might actually be awakened in some way, what if they see this and think that it is a good idea to start telling friends, family?
They may be subjected to the harshest ridicule.
And there is a safety aspect- kids that are unmentored getting half assed info and making mistakes, such as with blood. Resources like this place are not widely known and even on other related sites, the attitudes are still very closed in terms of providing impartial and accurate advice, as it is almost always assumed that anyone who claims to be one, is a role player and even if they are, perhaps they might still need help and guidance to prevent them from harming anyone, including themselves.
There needs to be a dissemination from the academic and the fanatsy. I know that this has begun in some quarters, but, with so many not wishing for this, its going to polarise opinion and probably tear factionalised groups apart, maybe even lead to violence.
I probably sound pretentious, but this is a real concern to me- if half the community moves towards 'outing' and the other half withdraw, the results are inevitable.
i know nought of the man....and i youse that tern lightly.........for a true VAMPYE a child of the Gathering only fears that humans will now observe.......in the hope of finding the refrance to our beliefs .......as humas do ...... they love to use knowledge as a tool to bring down civilications races individuals.....ect
Like we have a particular good rep anyway??
Way I see it he made the decision to go public his choice his business.
For the rest of us it may just help other people relate or at least be less ignorant towrd our way of life.
true ChaosBleed, what he does is his choice, but he then has to understand that he has responsibility for the potential ramifications.
And that is part of my problem with this- if there is such a bad feeling, why go looking for trouble?
By coming out, he drags much of the misconception with him before it has been properly debunked by the general media.
I've said before that I feel the internet is a better medium for what he wants to achieve. Mainstream media is far to controlled by other peoples agendas to be an effective tool for this kind of exercise, imo.
Don Broke the Veil and brought unrequested light to our Darkness. That's all I have to say.
I hate to say...it but i do not think he is all that bad...though i do think kthat he has put us in a sterotype...Aren't there enough already???
IT annoys me to the point of EEEERRRRRRR
But i also thank him because he has shed a little light on our kind
i dont know of the name..so and so so can i be enlightened
Don henrie was the vampire on a reality show called Mad Mad House. ALso he was one a documentary show called the secret lives of vampires. Umm u might be able to google the name and get some good info...
many ppl dont even belive we exist so were fine until normal ppl get a little more pbservent
I believe he is a great man. On Mad Mad House, he opened people's eyes to a world unrealized. True, some people will ridicule him, but he has not hurt the vampire community. Why should we be cursed to always live a secret? If he is strong enough to take the attacks regularly thrown against him, then he shouldn't be cursed for it. He has dragged no one into the light who did not want to go.
Besides, he is damn sexy. Did you see his photo gallery? Some of those poses should be illegal.
Wow, this really is an informative site. I didn't think many people knew of him. In the city im from..no..one...*sighs*
i dont think that there is much threat in something like that
*shrugs* no opinion on him.
i think he plays too much on the stereo type.. thats about all
