You've heard of the Large Hadron Collider built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research, right? It's been in the news for months. In case you haven't, their intention is to use it in order to create miniature big bangs. Who else thinks this is a huge mistake? Who is to say the first big bang wasn't a mini? What if a big bang is perpetual? What if it just keeps on growing? Creating a big bang of any kind could unmake or even reset the universe. I believe in science, but I also believe in taking small steps first. This is a leap into the fire if you ask me. We wouldn't only be destroying ourselves, but any life that may exist elsewhere in the universe. What do you think?

i like the idea that science is advancing, but i hate the idea that they want to set off another BIG bang.... what if they destroy earth!??

there are too many what ifs with this situation. I would think that the people that created this, would consider that fact. Or at least allow the people to vote on it... but hey, if they destroy us; dooming us all...... then we all know who to blame!!!!!!

LHC and control circumstances is a contradiction. There are no controled environments for equipment of that magnitude.

I agree with the unmaking of the Earth with this thread, it is has a very very negative undertone to it. Once again, society is not GOD so why try to duplicate animals let alone a big bang of any kind, or even to acknowledge unknown matter, let alone re-creating it.

I think more research needs to be done in order to fully understand this thread in its entirety instead of drawing blind conclusions as to what has already been half assed presented on news feeds from the originators of the device itself.

well i think if something goes wrong in this exsperiment it might make them all stop and listen, which would be a good thing, but then if it's really serious and the create something destructive it will be too late and we might not even see what is wrong untill weird stuff starts happening

You my 'friends' get stirred up real fast, Is obvious is not the real purpose of doing it, and is probably not any experiment or retrieval of any data we already know (you can imagine what is for); all I can say is- sending weapons to outer space has being a interest and a prohibited reaction counter it and not by the world governments or opposing groups( you can imagine by who as well), as all the " Missions outer space" they are all cover ups for other fines, I am most certain of it, research and establish connections with individuals that are open to release this kind of information that hold credentials and antecedents of labour.

I do not think it will because it we do not have all the same molecules here on earth as in outter space. I think that the little bang will be nothing at all like they want. Here on earth we have other things that will case problems like gravity.

And if we would destroy the universe don't you think maybe other life forms out there would come here and destory the LHC.

The whole Mini Bang theory is kinda far fetched. In order to do that First you need Negative Matter or Anti-Matter as it's communally called by scientist.
The theory on making that is way out their. Anti-Matter just simply cannot occupy space already occupied by another Matter. It's like if you touch the Negative and Positive on a Car Battery. You get a spark, that's what happens when a negative and positive come together.
Now the theory on making Anti-Matter is to spin Positive Matter in the opposite direction. The flaw with that is the Negative and Positive Matter would collide.
So then again what happens when Negative and Positive come together? They explode when there's enough there. Being as there's no way to separate the two in the making I don't think it's possible.

I disagree. Throughout the 20th century there have been experiments that havent exactly been controlled. If its a new Experiment, how are you to really know what to expect? such as Radiation experiments done back in the 40s and 50s.

A buddy And I had this discussion not to long ago. He knows what he's talking about. He's a Nuclear Physicist trained by the Navy. Yes all experiments are for a purposeful. But there are no such things as controlled conditions when it comes to an experiment. Things can and will go wrong. They might not be on catastrophic level, but then again they might.
And this whole thing might not happen for years. Which I hope that it don't happen until we can fully understand it.

How can it create big bang, even it can not create impressive blackholes.

If they create the impressive black hole then there is possibility of nova but big bang is much more than nova and super nova. human could notmake even black hole even of the level which suck any particle of sand, how can it go for big bang.

in my understanding last bang the human produced a thermonuclear test its biggest bang from human side.

I don't beleive that they are fiddling with the universe. I study particle physics as a student, and they have been searching for fundermental particles, such as the Higgs Boson and gravitions. The higgs field is related to the higgs particle, because they are the fundermental particles that interact with massless particles in the early universe. Because the higgs field is everywhere in the whole universe, and the massless particles slow down when they go through the higgs field, and the massless particles gain mass.

The higgs field interacts with different particles, and this is why different particles such as protons and neutrons have mass. They are creating conditions from the early universe, because the fundermental particles are locked inside the protons, from quarks and neutrinos and maybe the Higgs if its discovered.

They use hydrogen protons and strip the electron from it, and give the protons energy to accelerate the protons up to 99% the speed of light, so they fire protons in opposite directions, so that they collide and detect the deflections of the fragments giving off from the collisions using magnetic detecters.

My understanding is they have tested other particle accelerators in the past. This is just a huge project of many scientists working together. I had a roommate that worked on it in Switzerland and Texas. I don't think it will do much of anything. I think some of the other ideas are just from fanatics that are creating hysteria.

Stephen Hawking doesn't believe they will find the Higgs boson or God particle as it is also called, because he doesn't think it exists. He has wagered on it. Yes that's right the higgs and gravitons particles are not discovered yet. They are also looking for gravitional waves which they have not found yet, because gravity is a weak force, so these waves are differcult to find. Gravitional waves can be caused by 2 spinning binary neutron stars, that cause a ripple effect in the space time fabric.

Neither controls the other; rather one has influence over the other and vice versa. Each exists for the other, not independent of them.

As for the collider, I think it's a standard experiment. Either it will fail or it will succeed. I don't know that it's going to cause a bang of massive proportions. In the end, we will see...

I think moving ions does not create black hole of the levels... coz even moving ions too create photons and can not be speedy than photon, on the other hand black hole is a process which starts pulling the objects to the center.... and I dont think the LHC massing the elements on the center... if so then it has to work on diamond and not on silicon...

moving the energy over silicon and earthly matters will make them to understand the history, pattern of growth and conversion of the matter studied through LHC

well I don't know what type oftest tehy are doing... but moving the matter over the matter does not lead to transforming into matter having magnetic pull of real black hole which pulls the matters at level (large size even stone been pulled, it is call the black hole of the level... but moving the ions over the matter will impact on the particuler matter of the range that it will reveal its history of its ion as atom electron and nuclei and will tell us how the matter brought to form from big bang with symultanous tests on photons too coz photon is the lightest matter as amiba in living being as single large cell being... if photon impacton matters by movingthe ions on the matter, will reveal the history of the universe that how much velocity and pressure and time involved in the things shaped as Gigantic Creation on the test set as our star as an example... in the ratio of our star the other star and thus gallaxy will be hypothecated and thus other gallaxies too and the universe as whole...

Black hole are teh vacant space on which the elements squeezed by the pressure of the universe... which is hungry to fill the space... and thsi hunger given velocity then the mass become magnetic whirl pool of the matters in the sphere that pressure even can not allow photons to move out of that magnetic pull.

This type of space can not be created by LHC coz to create that space millions of millions mega tons of energy needed to explode and push the matter from that space... and once the matter is pushed the vacant space is created and then only black hole process starts as we seen in the case of nova and when this super magnetic zone as blackhole could not absorb such mass, it explodes its every energy to blows that mass and again become super nova...

This is my opinion and thoughts only you may say i tried to think the how the LHC Labwill try the things...

creating Real black hole is less possible in near 50 years coz it require very advanced stage of quantum technology... or to reach any stars core and push its processing at the center by exploding its 10 inch diametre center.

I wish I could say something that sounds really intelligent and witty, but it will not come out that way. With all the written word and research I have done on my own (yes, I read physics books and autobiographies for fun), shows me that what they are doing at CERN is of little consequence to the world when compared to what small pacts of people are doing in third world countries with biochemical reactions and germ warfare.

I think it's far more likely that civilization will be destroyed not by technology, not by some unknown mystical time bomb set to go off on 12/12/2012, but by all of the people that jump, headstrong and uneducated, onto every "OMFGWTFBBQ IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD!!!!!11!!1!!ONEONE!!!111!" bandwagon that comes along. Let's face it, civilization, the world, and the universe are all full of countless forces that a reasonably small imbalance could cause disaster. But it all seems to hold together pretty well for pretty long periods of time, and in some cases all comes apart without much of anything that could be done to prevent it.

yes we must give collective importance to get the ozon layers back with the poisonous gases brought to earth by any chemical reactions and must stop the production of co2 curbed by 50% and we should avoid the use of plant and tree oriented consumables so that tehy are saved and do not get destroyed at that speed. for this first we have to control our population growth and must develop some sewage processing unit which do convert it back to the elements as water is seperated from it and the oxidation of it and chemical reaction be stopped.

the amonia and the mithen and sulfer oriented gases be stopped ... chlorene oriented gases must be stopped. we must stop using the crude oil diesel and petrol as much as possible...

there is danger in the sea too as squid etc.. it be made a food for human and universally accepted... we must feast on the harming creatures and destroy the bacterias which harm the Human... the tunnel technilogy be developed so that one layer of rehabilitation of human is possible... I think any bio-culture be invented in the labs on which the human feast and remain healthy and be its anti-bodies be strong to defend the body from the intruder bacterias... we must feast on larvas so that our intestine chemicals and molecules that strong that no intestine sick of stumock related diseases...

what we are doing to search the chemcals and process which impact on diseases such as aids... but we do not stress over to make those antibodies that strong that the diseases been killed in the body through antibodies only may it be cancer or aids... its like poison only can kill the poison and metal only can cut the metal when hammered. but there is not 100 % cure from outer medicine on the diseases. there should be internal defence too be made by exercising in the labs.
