Science behind vampires
Would it be actually possible for a vampire to exist? To sustain a creature on blood alone, fiction or possibility?
The only way I think someone could be sustained on blood alone is if the took the blood from the correct place.
Blood carries four components, Plasma, white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. Plasma (the liquid part) carries things like nutrients, urea etc. And so if This Blood was taken with Nutrients in and injected then I believe it maybe possible not to have to eat etc as the nutrients taken in by the blood would not need to be taken in by the water and food.
The blood taken in would have to be the correct blood type also and obviously disease free. The only problem would be Fibre and the getting rid of waste products. This would be because no food would be taken in so there would be no waste products to get rid of. The six characteristics of a living thing include excretion. This could still occur with breathing out Carbon dioxide but the blood would contain oxygen and not carbon dioxide so would the respiratory system be necessary at all? As would the digestive system become in the end useless. Let us remind our selves of the six things necessary for a thing to do that is living.
M ovement
R esipiration
S ensitivity
N utrition
E xcretion
R eproduction
G rowth
Is the form of ‘feeding’ was to begin then Excretion would not stop as although we would only take in the necessary things in out chosen blood. We still have waste products from processes such as respiration.
Word equation for respiration:
Oxygen + Glucose --> energy + water + carbon dioxide
We would get the oxygen and glucose from our taken blood.
If we were to try and support this hypothesis with findings we would have to test the theory. This would be best done with two healthy identical twins as they would have the same DNA pattern. One twin would be subjected to the ‘vampire diet’ the other would carry on as usual. Every month we would test the twins against each other and see how the ‘vampire’ twin was reacting to treatment. It is likely that there would be bad symptoms at the start as the body adapts to the change. The twins would ideally be young as then we could see if it affected growth etc. But is this really ethically correct? We would if this was to take place have more than one test on the theory to rule out fluke etc.
This is a very interesting idea, but as someone in the medical profession, I would have to say that it is not possible. The digestion process would destroy most of the components.
No, it would not be intaken by the mouth it would need to be injected into the blood stream.
Ah, but then you take away the primary focus of the sanguine vampyric act, therefore rendering it to a transfusion, not a feeding process.
yes but would it not still be considered vampietic as they would be living souly one blood. Also after thinking about it at lenght i dont belive it would be possible to survive on consuming blood alone
You might be short of a few essential vitamins, unless you feel that there is a way to extract those from blood too?
Although, there are ways to survive upon introvenous drips.
Perhaps it is possible that a person could be sustained via this, but it would not be much of a life...
And it does come down to how you define vampyrism in this sense. Is it purely a surviving upon blood, or should the other factors of method be considered?
i think that there are many diffrent definitions of vampire.
But this would fit one of them, a creature surviving on blood alone.
Well, it seems rather impossible to keep onw alive sustained solely on blood. It may be possible to keep their organs functioning through an IV, but what kind of life would it be?
And as far as metaphysical vampires, which really aren't the focus of this thread, but I thought I'd mention them, can't be explained through modern science. There, I've said my piece.
But then, the human mind cannot be logically explained by modern science, but do we doubt it's existence?
Of course not, for we think, therefore we know the absolute truth that we really are.
:)
A philosophical turn? Now we've totally sidestepped the topic of the thread. Modern science is pitiful. It is restricted to what it can measure with primitive machines. They have yet to pierce the fabric of the subtle planes and unlock the true potential of their craft.
Umm.. there are creatures that sustain themselves on blood already. They are the vampire bats and yes they really do exist.
Well, mosquitos also sustain themselves on blood alone. Though he said 'creature', I think he was mainly referring to humans.
LaMuerte..primitive machines? I don't think I'd go as far as to call them that. They are inadequate to produce proof of these 'subtle planes'..but then again, nothing can prove it. How are can we expect scientists to pierce the fabric and tap into the potential of something that cannot be measured through any rational or physical means. Are they supposed to come up with imaginary machines that process astral energy or measure the intensity of supernatural influence? Maybe I'm not understanding your implication of what these 'planes' are. But as I said, I would hardly devalue the fruit of our collective efforts as primitive as compared to not so many decades ago.
I do agree though, the topic is widening here. Galapagos Mockingbirds also drink blood.
- D
SO do ticks, fleas, and numerous other parasites, while we're on the topic.
Actually, there is one person in California who has developed a machine that balances your body's energy. As far as I know, it is the only machine that works with the subtle energy.
i do not see howinjectingblood is feeding!!! like it has been stated already...and it may anger you...its only a transfusion!
We know. This is a theoretical thread. It doesn't deal with real vampires.
I can understand altering electrical currents..but to suggest he has created a machine that measures subtle reality..I'd have to see it myself. I doubt it though, because if he had managed to do something with that..it would be like disproving the theory of gravity.
- D
bringing up birds and bats into this topic is really far stretched ..our DNA fragments are so differencial. the problem with blood in the first place is it colagulates causing bloodclots. whether ingested, or given through an IV.. that individual would have an issue first with bloodclotting. Then comes our natural makeup.. I dont think it is a possibility for humans to feed solely off blood. I can see cannibalism, but at least the protein would be included. we cannot survive without certain essential ingredients.. Water..and protein which contains the natural elements our bodies are made more. My own opinion is this has been tried before.. Scientists are always researching our genetics and deepening our survival through these researches and thus far it has been proven that we cannot survive solely on blood.. Stabb... You are always on top of things here!!!! *smiles*
mrd, I don't know enough about it, but as far as I know, whether or not it intentionally affects the subtle body, it's function nevertheless has an affect on it.
Yes I you could live on blood because scientifically blood is full of everything you need to live.... Sure by digesting it you will need more than if you took it intraveiniously, but it still would give you nutrients if you drink it.
No, it wouldn't. The nutrients cannot maintain useful composition through the digestion process.
- D
Too true, mrd. Obviously someone didn't read through all the posts before writing her thoughts.
A very interesting idea, however I don't think it is possible. How would the vampyric person who chose to live off blood alone get an ample supply of their same bloodtype that is disease free? There are people in more dire need of that blood...
To sum up my original thoughts on this subject matter in a nutshell: vampires + science = not a good combination!
a true vamps teeth are hallow like a rattle snake but instead of excreting posion they draw the blood in strate in to the blood stream not throw the digestive trake
skyfire, that was one of my explainations to how vampires could exist scientifically
and a few of you people here don't seam to have read this correctly as i did say that it would not be able to be digested
LaMuerte HE is a SHE lol
It´s an interesting idea but....only feeding on blood?
I don´t think so...not because it´s impossible but because vampires as we know don´t deny a steak with potatoes right?? hehehehe
you can feed on blood as long as its moderate portions for the human body can not break it down in large quantities
but as for feeling on blood alone, no sorry..our bodies are not evolved to the degree where we are able to get all its substances from blood alone
Plus blood is a natural emetic. You couldn't stomach enough blood at one time anyway.
Hasn't anyone else besides me ponder that the long teeth vampires often, not always, have, can proove as feedings holes, which they suck in the blood. If you think about it, they don't just suck on the neck after bitting someoen, their teeth are remained inside them.
Which prooves the same as a transfusion, posing the theory somewaht acceptable, and the expirement someoen reasonable to try?
Those teeth don't have holes in them, and even if they did, the teeth aren't sharp enough to cut flesh properly. They serve no extra purpose.
You know I think some scientist tried to test this theroy out once and it didn't turn out so good. His subject almost died.
ravencraft, would you be able to find an article on it for me??
I do believe it possible to survive on blood alone, we have all the evidence that there are living animals and insects that live on blood, so why not a human? We are animals, and are very capible of being parasitic as other beings are.
LaMuerte, I do believe that over time, one would be able to "stomach" the amount of blood needed to stay alive, simply because our bodies adapt to not only our enviorment, but also what we consume.
on a side note concerning fangs...
you cant use them to feed anyway..
the fangs are portrayed to pierce flesh, suck up the blood and be able to drink...as though through a straw
sorry...you just cant work fangs in that way
Don't get mislead, by the misguiding minds of the human race, there is no science that can show you such a process, the only way to explain it is to say the blood carries a part of a persons soul, and what ever that part maybe, is what makes the souless vampires enegy to walk amoungest the living.
There are many things that some here have not yet spoken about. I have not read all the posts here, but from the first few that I did read, they seem to have forgotten many conditions which already exist to make someone a "Living Vampire".
There are certain genetic "defects" that can, if combined, cause a person to be a vampire in the litterary idea.
For instance, there are those who can never withstand light above a candle flame.
Those who are born with larger canines then most, giving them fangs.
"Disorders" of the digestive tract that cause a person to be on a "liquid diet" for the rest of thier life.
Muscle and joint abberations which give a person "inhuman-like" strength and flexibility compared to most.
Larger hypothalymus' tend to give a person a "trap-like" memory where they can remember everything. "Human computers" as we tend to call them now.
Then there's the issue of passing off these traits to others through a bite or series of bites. Take the different viruses that are out there today. If one could alter the genetic structure of a virus, they could in turn create a virus capable of passing off these traits from person to person through bodily fluids, much like the aids-virus, only with better side-effects..LOL
Now take in longevity.
Due to many factors in today's world, people no longer live as long as they once did naturally. Because of environmental factors and current diets and diseases, people count thier years in decades instead of centuries. These are important factors to be sure, but not the only ones. There are also certain genetic and mitochondrial factors that also add to this. By filtering out certain aspects of genetic code, integrating new ones which allow a person to regenerate faster (quick healing) then altering diet and environment, a person could live well into thier hundreds easily. Not to mention that they would appear to be "invulnerable" to most harm... save for direct sunlight or organ destruction (stake-through-the-heart-deal).
Taking in all these factors (and these are just a few) you could easily create a geneticcly true vampire.
Not too many of the traits listed could be passed on as the effect of a virus..let alone would a mere virus cause the reconfiguration of living tissue that way..especially in the brain to my knowledge.
Add to that..we couldn't even breed a child with all of those 'defects' if we wanted to. We simply don't know enough about how to modify our genetic code. As it stands, gene therapy treatments only affect a small portion of tissue. It's a nice thought..but to me, I guess it just sounds like science fiction.

Just a little quote you might want to think about.
loveing that quote
and this is progressing quite nicely
but a few people don't seam to understand that there has been scientific enqieries in to this
Very true. You never know who might be working on it...
*looks around eyeballing everyone to see if they are the one..*
to substain on blood alone in my opinion is impossible your body has desires for food and on blood only i think that one would starve to death. i love the taste of blood and try to drink as often as possible but to think that one could survive on blood alone to me seems to be impossible.
devilsdemons have you read this thread properly, no offence intended but you do now seam to understand. The blood used would be taken fromt the blood steam with the broken down nutrients in it. this would be then injected in to the test subject and so the stomach would not break it down.
Turelim beleive that far back in history vampires, in their original form, existed in harmony with humans.
then a war broke out between vampires and humans (who often attack those who are more powerful). The humans were losing and the magicians among them stryck a last ditch attempt by casting a spell of sterility on the vampires.
The vampires had won the war but noe couldn't reproduce.
The vampires then decided to create a vampire-human hybrid.
Giving humans the "dark gift" as it is often refered gave them fantastic strength in many ways but now they could only reproduce themselves by "turning" other humans.
Your mother wears a fat suit and holds the scientific key to the mystery of vampires in her butt.
That's right. The butt.
Seriously though, I don't feel like I can put forth any good theories on this. I'd have to find a vampire (definition being super strength, doesn't vomit when he drinks too much blood, and ahhhh maybe some telekinises or something. oh yeah, and immortality too) and throw him in a lab somewhere, do some horrible mad-scientisty testing.....then I'd have a theory for ya.
Anything else, when trying to scientifically explain a 'real' (being fictional) vampire, is more tale-spinning. In my opinion. I don't mean any offense to anyone. As for the sangs and such, why doesn't anyone go to the doctor and see what they think? Maybe the doc can give you some iron pills or something. Or maybe the doc would be like "Holy Mary, mother of God, husband of Joseph who is not the father of sweet Jesus, you're a vampire!" Give it a try.
I think a doc would probably think we were all crazy and give u some prutty pills
Just what are you trying to say, Arunima? That sanguinarian vampires are crazy? Or that they suffer from a physical ailment?
Well who knows for sure if vampires really live on blood alone? Who can tell for a fact that they are allergic to sunlight, garlic, crosses or wooden stakes through the heart? There are so many different stories and opinions on 'real' vampires that there's no starting to any potential scientific test as to whether or not vampires can excist.
LaMuerte, I'm saying that maybe some who think they are Sangs are crazy, yes. I'm saying that maybe taking the Sang ailment to the doctors is maybe not a bad idea. And then maybe it can actually be diagnosed and those who call themselves Sangs would not have to worry about people calling them crazy. If you really need blood to be able to function properly, fine, but prove it.
For the record, I have no problem with those who simply drink blood because they like it, as long as they know they don't need it.
And anyway, there is oxygen in the blood, and oxygen....gets you high. And anything that gets you high can get you at the very least mentally addicted.
I don't doubt that there are people who enjoy drinking blood or are even addicted to it. But when a sanguinarian goes without blood or at least a psychic feeding, their skin turns greyish, their gums recede, and they suffer from any number of other symptoms. Can you attribute those to an addiction?
I don't think the reason of this thread was arguing over whether or not sanguinarians are insane and need medical or mental help..
I think that's a rude judgement to make about someone you don't know anything about, and not fit for this site, which is about friendship and respect and tolerance. NOT about claiming a big part of the users here needs to see a doctor.....
AtraVeneficusVenustas i belive that there a too many diffrent uses and interpritations of the word vampire in the first place but that can not be helped. There is the traiditional vampire (Bram stoker's Dracular) The riceian vampire (lestat etc) and so one and so forth.
This is not a place to riddcule people for what they belive and my interpritation of when it was said that sangs should go to the docs it was not a jab at them but a idea of help as it would be able to see if there is realy a medical reason for the need of blood. And my comment of the docter beliving that the said sang was crazy was a joke no more, no less.
I do feel it is possible, to be a "vampire" according to legend, vampires dna structure has changed from other sources, i cannot personnaly define it, but it's like a vampire bat can survive souly off of it... although legends can be misunderstood but that is the legend none the less
Alrighty, misinterpretations abound. How can I make this any clearer...
I was not ridiculing anybody. I was making jokes, yes, but wow; I do that. Read my profile, I do it to myself, even.
I don't expect anyone to believe anything I've said in my profile, for the very base and logical reason that I don't have proof to offer anyone. I in fact am annoyed by people saying they believe me outright. I prefer those who say "I believe in the possibility".
And that was all I was saying; I believe in the possibility. Forgive me for having never seen a Sang in the throes of blood withdrawal. My bad, my bad, my most grievious bad.
As for the doctors, I thought that belonged under something entitled "Science behind vampires", because if you're a Sang and you really want social acceptance (and most of you can't tell me you don't want that, I've read through the threads about how crappy it is that most people think vamps are evil), you can take yourself to a doctor, present your symptoms, and voila....you have yourself a documented case of vampirism.
I'm sorry if this offends.
nobody has mentioned how drinking is erotic and some do it for pleasure and not for sustaining ones life but merely to intensify the sexual experience they have with ones partner (s).....but all the posts were great....very deep and well thought out.....
princess i think the reason that has not been brough up is because we are talk about blood being used as a life force not as a sex toy
jadedprincess,
i'm sure the is a forum question asking wot draws one to a vamp.
there the blood drinking is mentioned as erotic.
the science of vampires living off of blood is easy,.. just look at the vampire bat or leech. There was a program on Animal Planet I saw recently called Blood suckers, or somthin like that, that has MANY diffrent blood consuming lifeforms are shown, and shown feeding, many times on human subjects
very interesting... i think it is possible to work... hmmm
The human body can not survive on the ingestion of blood alone. This is a simple fact and can not be related to the animal kingdom. Our bodies and bodies of vampiric animals are different and structured differently. The basic food groups that we are told throughout our lives are needed to survive I am not sure if blood in considered the secret food group.
So for anyone who says then can survive on blood alone I will see you at your grave standing there with a smile.
Think before you say something stupid.
DarkAdmin i have pointed out many times through out this thread that i do not intent on the blood being eaten but being injected
Ummm...what is wrong with human food?....yummy cakes, steak, macarori and cheese, chocolate....mmm...(drool)
I can't really say for sure if their is even a science behind this....I mean how many of you actually go out at night and feed....this site I think is all part of a fantasy we all would like to be...but are not....somebody tell me what is the correct way of feeding, please, and I will consider trying with a friend.
I read about there being 3 different diseases that gave people the common characteristics of being a vampire: anemia, porphyria, and catalepsy. Porphyria is the one most commonly known as the "vampire's disease" not only becasue of physical effects but it's main treatment is blood transfusions. Porphyria is a rare hereditary blood disease; its symptoms so closely match the myths associated with our modern conception of vampirism it's eerie. A victim of porphyria cannot produce heme, a major and vital component of red blood. Today, this disease is treatable with regular injections of heme into the body. However, as little as fifty years ago, this treatment was unavailable and the disease unknown. In the past, a porphyria sufferer would show symptoms that include:
Extreme sensitivity to sunlight
Sores and scars that break open and will not heal properly
Excessive hair growth
Tightening of skin around lips and gums (which would make the incisors more prominent)
This disease would likely cause the victim to only go out at night, in order to avoid the painful rays of the sun. In addition, while garlic stimulates the production of heme in a healthy person, it would only cause the symptoms of porphyria to become more painfully severe. Porphyria was eventually discarded by scientists as a reasonable explanation of the vampire myth that has pervaded our history. Although vampire accounts of the past bear little resemblance to the dashing figure we romanticize today, these qualities may have contributed to our look at the vampire in film and fiction: pale skin, extended incisors, even the fear of the sun!
to god fearing christians.. its wrong but.... its sumthi that should be done.. so non beleiver will shut the hell up bout us and how we dont exist... but i was watching sumthin bout how if a person was to survive on blood.. theyd ahve to drink the equivalent of a bathtub full each day in order to get the correct amount of nutrients... well acording to animal planet anyway
I think they're somethings in this world that science can never explain. Somethings that are as they are.
has anyone else read anything on the possibility of increased active muscle in the body.
i understand Humans hav about 50/50 latent and active muscle types but maybe the secret to the vampire's strength lies in the active muscle being much more dominant in the body.
some animals have nearly 100% active muscle (mostly preditors).
does any1 else know much about this?
i know little of biology myself.
wouldn't your digestive/extretory system shut down or atrophy from lack of use...causing potentially fatal effects on the body?
There is a documented creature that survives soley on blood. The vampire bat. It still produces waste, it still uses its respiratory system, it simply derives its sustenence from the blood it ingests. If a human could produce the necessary enzimes to properly digest blood, then anything is possible.
i believe that maybe i have drinking blood from a deer i killed when i went hunting with my father it was my first kill
there should be no science behind them, thats the whole point of the supernatural/paranormal they are phenomena that science cannot or does not explain
i agree with the person who is in the medical field for i am too.
the body can not live alone just on the components from the blood...those are only a few of what the body needs to continue to function with all of its parts intatct...
to consume too much blood results in the body purdging the excess waste that would eventually, if not removed, poisioning the person and causing them to go into cardiac arrest
its a nice theroy, even if our bodies couldnt do it
