From the time I could read, I have been fascinated with the accounts of the darkest of mans myths. From the Norse Hamrammr to the Orang Pendek of Sumatra. I have spent hours reading and cataloging these creatures, revenants, and myths in my head.
My question to the Vampire Rave community is what supernatural creatures do you believe in?
The one I believe holds the most scientific and physical merit is the Kakli Besar of Malaysia.
A major one in my belief system is the Wendigo. Most Native American folkloric tales are wrapped around this woodland or snowland entry.
I believe in the baslisk...able to turn its victim to stone with a gaze from its eyes.
I think the one I most believe in is called LaChusa. It is a mexican/hispanic myth. It is a witch that turns into a bird and laughs at you whenever something bad happens like a death in the family.
La Llorona, the weeping woman, an ancient tale all the way back to Medea, with endless variations in modern times: the mother who drowns her children can be heard crying, especially by mothers insane with jealousy over lost lovers, or because of continued emotional and physical abuse at their hands. Powerless, except for her ability to create life, she exercises her will not by killing the lover, but by taking the lives of those over whom she had power. This is a supernatural creature whose story is known around the world, but whose warning is rarely heeded.
My pet Crypto is Gremlins, Not much to worry about once one gets a talisman that wards against their mischief.
Supernatural Huh, would be like the griffin or medusa. yet are they supernatural or do we make them that way, because of fable.
Banshee- woman ghost, or a spirit who wails of the upcoming death of a person.
I would say I belive in the Phoenix. It's a mythical bird, yes. The Egyptians belived that the Phoenix represented ones' longing for immortality. Also, it is also known to represent rebirth. I believe in it in a purely "mythical" way.
"A mythical bird that never dies, the phoenix flies far ahead to the front, always scanning the landscape and distant space. It represents our capacity for vision, for collecting sensory information about our environment and the events unfolding within it. The phoenix, with its great beauty, creates intense excitement and deathless inspiration."
- The Feng Shui Handbook, Feng Shui Master Lam Kam Chuen.
I'm a little confused... is there a distinction being made between "supernatural" creatures vs "mythological" creatures? And if so, what is the nature of that distinction? Sometimes it's a fine line between folklore, literature, tradition, and (I hate to say it....) faith.
Technically, Santa's flying reindeer could be considered "supernatural" creatures.
Just saying.
I think, Sir, that Supernatural creatures are animals/birds with "supernatural" powers. For every supernatural creature, there is a story. And the story is called a Myth. I guess the terms can be used interchangeably.
I guess...none...I have become too rational in my old age I guess. ...do aliens count?
Fairies. They are the fascination of any Irish person. People said they exist and have there own place in this huge planet. Wow!!
I follow your reasoning thoth there must be a distinvtion between mythological, fantasy, crypto and supernatural creatures.
what? Fantasy? how DARE you!
I'm not talking about unicorns!
I think i believe in most supernatrual creatures, I especially like yetis :) But isnt it fun to think that everything exisits??
Is super natural considered to have some sort of powers, like medusa, or breath fire. many monster relating to fable can be mentioned so what do we go for.
Love medusa, or the hydra, yet modern fable, bigfoot or nessy.
Yeti is cryptozoology.
Ghost could be catogorised as supernatural.. But not creatures..
good question Cadre.
Cryptid creatures i.e. Jersey Devil, Mothman, Big Foot and many others.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cryptids
I don't like talking much about it but i have had an experience once with what I can only describe as The Mothman . Some say real some say no . I on the other hand did not like it and will always feel that it was the creature .
Even though I want to make jokes about moth balls and the cartoon moth man I wont ..lol
As I understand this being has quite a few sightings now..
there is a distinction...yeti...bigfoot...nessie...
not supernatural.
ghosts...supernatural...but not really creatures
supernatural creatures...well, i actually do believe in the possibility of the vampire of myth and legend. i dont say i do absolutely...but dont rule it out...too many connected legends in too many cultures.
~W~
I believe in all of them.....and none
I believe in multi dimentional physics....so anything is possible in some random locale
i believe in all of it. the legends and etc... had to start somewhere
Why is the loch ness a supernatural creature? Makes one think of a dragon, a phoenix, a werewolf even.
i too agree there are creatures out there that we have yet to see
The thunder birds, from native american legends and Jersey Devil.
look at other cultures of supernatural creatures, RA or the hydra, mermaids, yet when is the clasification cut off from supernatural and mythical beings or creatures.
I believe in angels, not neccessarily of the Biblical sense.
Then in what sense?
"Angel" means -- literally -- messenger of God.
Myself I cannot count any out. I have an open mind and until I can get facts either way I will always believe anything is possible. We are always finding new creatures even in this day and age so how can we write something off because we havent got evidence that they exists.
im not really sure whay i believe in but i know there is spirits of good and evil that roam the earth and many trapped souls
has anyone heard of the bogg men or of the lizard man?
I believe in dragons. Not the big scaley ones, but the ones who travel through dimensions in the etherplanes and what not.
I also believe in Yoda, The Chickenman, and of course, Fluffy the three headed dog!
For those who say.. " there is still a possibility that such creatures exist."
I am now selling tickets for a ride on a Pegasus.
Yeah, im with the whole mythological creatures vs supernatural ones. BUT im gonna go with the oldie but goodie. Those full bodied aparitions that often manifest with that un-nerving stench of sulfur and decay.
Yeah, those are always fun visitors...*rolls eyes*
To some extent I believe in this...
Reptilian Race
If one looks through YouTube, you'll see a wide variety of controversies that relate to this ideal.
i believe in most creatures like this... who is to say they are not real or are when no one really knows for sure
you have a point there. post the same thing on the bermuda triangle thread
supernatural....well, i do believe in ghosts.
i am open to the idea of vampires....some form of them are in pretty much every culture. lets just say that i dont disbelieve in them outright.
~W~
I agree with what was said above, though if you know me- I always like to go to an extreme.
I firmly believe in Wiccans, spirits, and vampyres. That is all there is to it, really.
If I may ask, you say " I believe in Wiccans", are you implying that Wicca is supernatural?
I am curious how you catigorize Wicca, with Vampires.
For the sake of discussion, not to debate. Just seeking clarity. Thank you.
Personally I believe in Vampires (obviously), werewolves, witches (mainly because i believe in magic and a woman who performs magic is often called a witch) Lucifer and his demons but not god or angels or anything else.
Yeah, no problem!
Well, I do categorize wicca/ wiccans as supernatural because the ability to actually believe is the same.
It is a part of my beliefs with the five elements, spells, and candle magic.
Does that clarify a little?
what would you say the supernatural element of nessie and chupacobra would be?
you think they are supernatural creatures?
~W~
no real creatures yet discovered. supernatural to me is the existance of some power of the creature. Like a dragon and fire, mermaid and the lure of her call.
ive seen possible explanations of a dragons breath that are quite scientific.
for me supernatural would be vampires, werewolves, succubi, incubi, anything involving magic basically (and yes...coming back to life is pretty magical!)
~W~
But there are all different types of magic...
Does every type fall under the category of "supernatural"?
two ways of looking at it.
first...if it happens, then it is a part of nature, and therefore not "super natural"
but the other way of looking at it is
a way of influencing the world around us by ritual, force of will, etc without actually physically doing anything (like building something) is supernatural.
in that case wiccan magic, high magic, prayer, etc all would be examples of supernatural activities
~W~
I believe in it all. Had to be somewhere, been hearing about it for centuries. Look on discovery....
Discovery only ever tells you half of any of those stories...
So if you try to get a different result with magic, it is supernatural...
but natural, and it is not?
Fascinating... truly
Super natural would be the spell, or to manuipulate the forces on earth. pray would not involve this it comes from the actions of belief inside ones self. now if a flood happened by the hand of what ever god or diety than that would be supernatural
In a manner, anything that is said to demonstrate defiance of the laws of nature. Super Natural.
Anything said to demonstrate defiance of the laws of physics can be called paranormal.
Big Foot, etc.. classifies as cryptozoology.
My pet creature gremlins.. are lore.. depending on how one related the telling of said creature.
Creature1, my friend...YOU are a supernatural creature..!What about the Succubus? The Incubus? Would they be considered supernatural? Or would you put them into the ghost category? Curious.
And what about Shadow People? I've heard lots of claims from people to have been terrorized by them. Not saying I believe in any of it, but that certainly doesn't mean they don't exist. I mean, people are seeing something and I would never endeavor to discredit anyones beliefs simply because of my own. Alot of very credible people make claims of having seen strange and unexplainable things.
Why the reference to Cylicant? It is not cryptid.
Why must science toil to " prove" the existance of such creatures, where are the experts? Where is their progress?
Science is the more logical aspect of this, I guess. I admit sometimes the unknown doesn't make sense. If there were no logic, nothing would be credible, and people would be led to believing the insanity. Science works hand in hand with the unknown, and when it does, it is beautiful. :)
yet in term of science and myth working hand in hand only on the realm of those who claim to be scientist searching for myth, yet most or general scientist do not indulge in it unless it can be figured by math or seen to be proven. Work it out tell its plasible. Quantifiable pyhsics that it could exist.
it is silly for those who are convinced of such cryptids to place the burden on
science to " prove" what they believe.
Even more laughable is when they defy science to " prove" something doesn't exist.
Had those who declare such creatures exist put a quarter of the effort they put into spectulating, and pondering they would have discovered something
by now, and their transference lashes out at skeptics who are watching hoax after hoax exposed, or hype over some mange ridden animal..
Let fantasy be fantasy..
science is the realm of belief in something in sight or documented to prove that it exists. Do not get me wrong their friend dabbler, science does have a place in society yet my perception is many of the so called scientist look at life or myth as fairy tales of old, yet through our life we know that alot of documentation was not written down until the turn of the centuries. so factual ideas of mans thought or specualtion of lore.
So myths or lore may and do hold on to some truth of the scenerio that has played out in history.
I think one of the most aluring is Big Foot. Only because every culture around the world has a version of such a creature.
I often wondered if this alusive creature is no ape like man creature, but rather a Werewolf as to why it is never found or caught alive. Simply because it transverses back to human form.
No caves, nests, bones, skins, teeth, etc have been found. Only foot prints, hair, visual sightings.
i have a bigger problem truly believing in a true lycanthrope than i do in a bigfoot....
but still, its a possibility, and im certainly up for exploring it.
cool idea
~W~
I don't have any evidence to make such claims on the existence of supernatural creatures, unless I experience it for myself.
just to let you know... science doesn't study the bounds of the supernatural... just the natural... because it is impossible to come with a scientific basis or hypothesis on something that is not understood, and therefor can't be proven with the scientific method because there is no way to evaluate it... To prove something scientifically you need measurable evidence than can be proven over and over again with the same exact outcome.... much like an experiment ... and without that, you have no scientific proof...
People don't realize this and try to use science to prove supernatural occurrences... but they are ignorant to the fact that its not science until you can measure supernatural power... but as of now... that is impossible. [I have taken sooo many science classes because of my major and people debate this a lot, but it's impossible as of now]
but I believe many supernatural things exist. I think that we would be foolish to believe there aren't things in this world that we don't understand.
so what you are saying is that if science ignores something that it cannot prove or disprove?
The supernatural creature I believe in the most is simply spirits or ghosts. I have experienced them and know them to be real.
It would have to be Dragons for me. Their wisdom, mystical powers and their beastly nature as well all are attractive.
no... what I am saying is you cannot use science to prove or disprove anything of the supernatural.
I agree with you, Alek.
I believe in the supernatural to an extent, but I also believe in common sense. When people speak about seeing the ghosts and ghoulies so casually, I tend to put on my 'Listen with feigned interest, but don't believe a word of it' face.
I've had 'experiences' with 'supernatural entities'. But they could be explained with science, since others saw the 'Supernatural experiences' happen to me, though I was a sleep at that time, so take that for what it's worth.
In Trinidad, dey believe in me!
Dey also believe in de Lagahoo, La Diablesse, Douennes, Papa Bois, Maman D'leaux, Jumbies, Duppies, an' several oddah creatures of de night.
Do we exist?
See if yuh can get some of de older folks to cut down a silk cotton tree. Dey know... dey know...
Never heard of a mothman except in a movie reference. Has anyone heard of a Celtic fairey called a Durelalan? A creature that held its own head in its hand as it was te Coachwoman for the legendary Coach De'Bruaer...aka: The Death Coach?
Well I do believe in th Windigo's maybe cause I grew up with the stories of them yet, there are many ledgends and Myths of the supernatural beings, s who are we to say they do not exist, stories came and started somewhere...
part of the belief in such creatures is a bit like religion...either someone believes or they dont. nessie? i want photos...a wendigo? thats a spirit...
as for me, i believe in the incubus/succubus. i drempt of succubi when i was a teen...each morning i awoke feeling so drained...but rather pleased lol.
~W~
I believe in the supernatural creatures that I have contacted personally.
The dark faerie is not tiny like many other fairies.
There are many fairies but dark faeries are very very different in many ways. They can blend in with others as well in certain grueling circumstances such as repeated wing removal and ear trimmings. Sigh...but despite all these alterations, the dark faerie still retains its abilities to drain will power through the blood while injecting a sweet poison into those who give their affections. And their fangs, although very sharp, are rather small compared to the 'classic' vampire figure. Anyways....needless to saaay I believe in fairies.
*flutters newly grown wings and giggles.*
My name is Karmine. I was made Vampire on March 31st 1855. We have been called Demons in the past, and the term Demon is just another name for a supernatural creature. I do not consider myself very much different from the average human, as most of my friends are human. I have a human companion who provides me with the blood that I require. I have learned to lead a double life and have gone "mainstream" since I no longer hunt.
