What does it mean to you? And what plans do you have for it this year? (Asking for both any religious ceremonies planned, or the standard commercialized dressing up).
It is my favorite holiday yet, I just spend it watching horror movies. I have no interest in it's religious meanings.
All Hallows Eve is very special, the window between the world of the living and the dead is at it's weakest.
My planning are to go to the pumpkin patch and visit the graves of family members to pay respect and then I will go home and watch vampire movies~!
Samhain. The New Year. I spend most of the morning getting into costume. I go all out. And it is nothing sweet or pretty. I also gather two sticks about 6 inches in length and make a cross out of them with twine holding them together to hang in my front room. A new one is made every year and the old one is burned on November 1st. I make a chocolate cake and banana bread the night before. I then make a big pot of vegetable stew for the evening of Samhain. I perform ritual in costume just before dark. I then take my sons trick or treating and lastly I spend the rest of the night and into the wee hours of November 1st at graves (no one in particular, as everyone is equal in death). And on November 1st and November 2nd I continue cooking vegetarian food.

To me it represents the best day of the year for 'community'. When else can you be greeted with a smile at so many stranger's doors?
Oh, I love this Holiday, as was mentioned it is a time when the veil between spirit world and the modern world is all but broken. I plan to once again be reunited with my parents, as well as other family members ^.^ also ha it is a time where every one seems to pay respects, even those that dress up, or simply watch movies, it is a form of paying respect and I love it. Have fun every one! But, be careful, there are also those who hunt on this night, both human and otherwise. Be safe :)
Very nicely put, all.
I myself plan on visiting my stepfather's and his mother's graves, then coming home, then a major costume overhaul, and out trick or treating with my niece.
After that, later at night, I will be performing a cleansing ritual (I often do this to encourage any wandering entities to go back through the veil while it is at it's thinnest.
This is definitely my favorite holiday. And I agree, what other day can you be greeted at a strangers door with a smile?
Especially when dressed like a vampire/killer/zombie, and the many other creatures available.
I love that this is still a time when people come together, even if many of them don't know the original reasoning behind the tradition.
When I am able I like to design Haunted houses, and exploit peoples fears to make them jump out of their skin, then I mine for the candy bags they drop.
it is samhain to me and this year we r doing a big ritual and having a feast fit for the godess we r paying our respects to or loved one who have passed and we r having a bonfire on the shore of lake supior woo hoo
For me as well it is Samhain, the New Year a time to reflect on those that have crossed over in the last year. A time to celebrate with friends and family and prepare for the coming year. The house will be filled with the smell of pumkin bread and stew, candles will be lit and jack olaterns will be lined along the walk way.
Halloween has always been my favorite time of year anad up until my awakening of being Psi i have no idea why i loved All Hallows Eve so much.
What does it mean to you?
To me it means that ghosts can come through the veil while at its thinnist and visit their living relatives. I have many other reasons but too many to name on here
And what plans do you have for it this year? (Asking for both any religious ceremonies planned, or the standard commercialized dressing up).
I'm not completely sure what i will be doing for Halloween together. i have not seen my nephew or nieces in a few months (my brother got called into work and my sister in law cant get her shit together with letting me my dad and sister still come over) but if i see them then i will be happy and come home to watch anything and everything about Vampires and Ghosts.
If i end up not doing much for All Hallows eve I may be with a friend if she is back from her trip up north.
Like so many others, this is my favorite holiday as well. Now that my girls are older, I get to hand out candy and see all the kids in their costumes. We decorate our yard and have some talking skeleton heads that usually make a few people jump. I carve pumpkins and light them on the porch by a huge cauldron. After the trick or treaters stop, I do my ritual and a "dumb" supper where we leave a plate for our ancestors who have passed over. We also cut an apple in half (where you can see a 5 point star) and leave it out on the west side of our house (west is where the spirits are thought to roam when the veil between worlds is thinnest). It's a great day and load of fun! Not to mention I went into labor with my oldest daughter on all hallows eve almost 20 years ago...so it's extra special!
This is one of the best holidays for family and friends to me since everyone seems more open to meeting each other, maybe the costumes help us relax.
I enjoy handing out candy with my niece and nephew and seeing all the kids dressed up. Then I enjoy meeting up with friends and having a Samhain ritual to celebrate the new year.
I've always done spell work of some kind; more often than not ceremonies involving helping lost souls cross through the veil; death and rebirth rituals. Communed with spirits. That sort of thing.
Halloween to me means family and friends getting together.
Every Halloween we have a haunted house. All proceeds go towards child abuse prevention.
All Hallow's Eve is my all time favorite holiday, and back when I was High Priestess of my Coven, we used to get together to celebrate. Now, however, I spend my time planning parties or up until last year, go trick or treating with friends.
Usually my friends hold a big party at their old house but this year i am opening my new shop on halloween! exciting! :)
last year i had drill which sucked but his year its on the weekend and im free!
i dont know what ill be doing, but i suspect ill be hitting a club.

All hallows eve, Halloween, Samhain...one of the old fire festivals favoured by pagans and celebrated by me with witches of the other covens in our tradition. A large circle is caste and the dead are invited into it to share the energy. Among the departed are a number of those who were initiates of the tradition, especially those who have passed over during the last year.
i like to go to all the sweet Halloween parties. i dont do the religious thing either. but i do like to scare little kids who come to our door.
Probably do what i do every year. Let the kids have their fun. I don't believe nor care for the religious take of it.
Let's see. I kicked things off with the ebm/goth night in my area this past Saturday and decorating the house on Sunday. Apple/pumpkin patch trip this coming Saturday and then another industrial goth concert Sunday night. Going to a 'haunted graveyard' at the local amusement park the following weekend. An actual Halloween party on the 23rd. And then comes the big decision - head down to NYC the 29-31st for parties there or not. In short - I celebrate all month long - not just the night of....
To us it is a Special Day X2 We will Celebrate our Wedding Anniversary and Samhain Being pagan this is a very Solemn Day As we visit our Ancestors and pay our Respect to them , then we will go out and have a nice quiet Dinner for our anniversary.
Pay respect to the dead and perform the purification rituals... ~bows~
With you Doru, the dead must be remembered, whether family or friend, It is the only Holiday that I truly enjoy and can't wait to come around.
We are getting together for a Samhaim circle and feast .we will have little efigies for the people that have passed on with a bonfire at the end to close the circle as to not leave any door open.I would go to see my loved one in her new home but she's in Pine Lawn NY and I alas am stuck in Florida but I will be thinking of her and thats what counts in the end. I bid all of you a merry all hallows eve and I hope all your kids fill there bags with candy.
D'oh - forgot to add, I'm going to a presentation tonight by the Warrens: http://thedemonologist.net/the_warrens_20903.htm
It is one of my more fav days. Though this year I ant planed much. But watching horror films and spending the awakening day with my feance (Smiles)
as the family is in transition at this point in our we haven't made any deffinite plans. ordinarily we get dressed up and go to a party or have a part. I am really going to miss it this year.
Each year for the last 13 years I have attended
the Anne Rice Ball and the Endless Night Ball held in New Orleans each Halloween. So the Costuming and Travel has always been rigorous (just try getting a Coffin on an airplane these days...Oy!)
But last year's True Blood party was awesome!
This year I am headed to Fort Lauderdale Florida for the
Wicked Mannors Halloween Block-Party which is growing larger each year and is turning into a major city event.
(Needless to say, Halloween means a great deal to me and my friends!)
Usually I dress up and go to party.
It's the holiday I truly like to celebrate, even more than my birthday.
the last few years for me, the holiday has just seemed ...tamer i suppose.
i really need to work on that.

The only night where I can be myself and not be worried about people staring at me and bothering me... I like to watch people not be wathced...
It has come to my attention by reading all of the other responses, that I seem to be the only person on this site who's birthday shares this day of days......8 minutes until midnight(witching hour), and the hospital was on fire. I was the only boy born in that hospital the day before, the day of, and the day after.......Warlock, anyone!?
