wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, and gluttony;
I am probably mostly guilty of sloth - the neglect to take care of something that one should do (with gluttony as a close second, I do love good food, although I am working on changing my diet to be less overindulgent and not over eat).
Which vise is yours?
MooniePie Edit: Please explain your answer with why you use it as a vise or how.. One worded answers will be deleted.
Did you know that if you have all of the deadly sins, they'll cancel each other out?
Pride won't let you get fat from Gluttony, Sloth stills Wrath, that sort of thing.
Cabrion,
I am on that train.
Does Hell have room for all the Sinners, and church members who Wrath against Sinners?
i think that maybe they should lower heavens acceptance requirements
I am prone to using Sloth and Gluttony.
When I am stressed all I want to do is sleep and/ or eat.
I think I've maintained a good hold on them so far but sometimes a peice of cake or two cups of starbucks coffee, instead of one is too hard to pass up :P
And sleep?? Looove it. Love to dream and just be comfy so I used to get way too much of it, now I don't get enough. :(
I agree Dab, (although, I believe hell and the lake of fire have plenty of room) those "church members" who wrath against "sinners" should be reminded on a consistent basis of compassion. Some confuse compassion with pity, they are not the same.
I guess I would be guilty of sloth, given the time I spend here on VR. LOL
Lust would be another that I'm guilty of (points to my profile as evidence).
ill be honest and say pride. but i dont think i dont think in a bad way. i just take pride in my work and dont let people tell me its less then what it is. and i dont like to look bad so i make sure i do my hair and put a little make up on when i go out...i dont think thats such a bad thing. i mean im not looking in the mirror every two minutes and i dont think im better then anyone else.
I am Proud to declare that I am subject to none of the 7 sins.
hmmm...you must have some great willpower.
I, on the other hand have good willpower but I know I am the biggest sinner ever. lol I surely have all 7 and if there were 37 I'd have all those too.
I am guilty of every last one, but that is what builds my character and why I am the way I am today.
Rules were meant to be broken
i fall prey to all seven... mostly pride though.
LMAO!
But I think everyone has done each of these even once...
if they havent they are pretty much god himself...
and according to the meaning of a sinner...LMAO
IF YOU HAVE DONE IT ONCE... YOU FALL PREY TO IT.
hahaha
so...I know I am guilty of all 7 as well.
I would have to agree that, at one time or another, we all have committed each of these.
Perhaps I should rephrase the question - if there is indeed a Hell, and these are the trespasses which will get you there for repeat offenses - which one would be your ticket in?
But, just the same, I am enjoying your responses! Nice to know that there are those out there who know they aren't above making mistakes and judgmental errors.
And, Littleone, the care you take in your work and appearance doesn't sound like the sinful type of pride, I agree with you there. In almost every list Pride is a desire to be more important or attractive than others, failing to acknowledge the good work of others, and excessive love of self. Dante's definition was "love of self perverted to hatred and contempt for one's neighbour."
While I don't personally believe in the Christian idea of Hell, I do believe that these are sinful behaviors - each one can have a negative impact on those around you, whether that impact is obvious or not. I believe in Karma, and that we should follow the golden rule - treat others as you want to be treated.
Again, though, I myself sometimes fall into temptation.
I would suspect I have been guilty of all seven at one time or other.
Envy, Gluttony, Greed, Lust, Pride, Sloth and Wrath.
I have at one time wished I had someone else's life. I have overeaten on many occasions especially when depressed. I think many others do too because there are so many diets out there.
I am not so much into the greed aspect but I am sure I have failed on that one at least once in my life.
Lust...now come on folks...we know we all get like that, lol.
Pride - I think everyone has problems with this. It is hard to create something and have someone put you down about it. I think pride comes right in here.
Sloth well that is the one I most am not like. I use to get teased about being OCD neat. I got a handle on it now. I don't know which is worse and I am not lazy but like anything else things just get old and we all let things slide once in awhile. I do now that I'm older.
All I can say about the last one is get backs are a b---h.
I feel those who state they don't fall under these issues should look at that word Pride.
There is a revised list now put out by the Catholic church. They have been revised a few times.
I have a whole website on this but I think people don't realize that what these mean have changed over time. Example:
More than other sins, the definition of Sloth has changed its original inclusion in the list. Originally, its place was fulfilled by two others, Acedia and sadness. The former described a spiritual apathy that affected the faithful by discouraging them from their religious work. Sadness (Tristitia in Latin) discribed a feeling of disatisfaction or discontent, which caused unhappiness with their current situation. When Thomas Aquinas selected Acedia for his list, he described it as an "uneasiness of the mind," being a progenitor for lesser sins such as restlessness and instability. Dante built on this definition., describing Sloth as being the "Failure to love God with all one's heart, all one's mind and all one's soul." He also describes it as the middle sin, and as such is the only sin characterized by an absence of insufficiency of love. Modern interpretations differ from either of these and portray Sloth as being simply a sin of laziness, of an unwillingness to act, and of an unwillingness to care. For this reason Sloth is now often seen as being considerably less serious than the other sins.
No, know-it-all isn't on the list...sticks out tongue, lol.
lust, the most beautiful of the 7 Sins. Every member who reply to this thread, is a member of the Slut Club. At the supermarket, at the mall, restaurant or a cafe, always the lust temptation is there. I practiced it and IO am Loving it!! The others 6, I don't like them, they are bad!!! LOL
Envy never appealed to me.
I see wealthy people as subjects of leisure pursuits, slaves actually.
If Monkhood appealed to me, would that make me envious?
Marcus - being tempted by lust doesn't make someone "part of Club Slut", just an FYI. It's what you do with those feelings and thoughts that separate us from animals (although I am not opposed to giving in to animalistic desires) sometimes the fantasy is better than the reality will ever turn out - haven't you ever been disappointed (sexually or otherwise)?
Dabbler - I suppose that would depend. When you see or think about a monk, do your thoughts trail towards, "It must be nice to have such a peaceful, harmonious existence without the worries of chasing material possessions." or more towards, "He is walking towards that dark alley - wonder if the other monks would notice if I killed him and took his place." LOL.
dabbler is god... enough said.
hahaha
=]
but i don't see how people cannot fall into these sins at least once i their life
i think many people don't realize sloth is defined as just being lazy... i think many people fall into sloth more than many of the others... it just means laziness... in ALL aspects of life...
and Envy can be as simple as want that iPhone your friend has or wishing you had something physical or some ability that someone has and being even the slightest bit jealous of them...
Most people deny and some can honestly not even tell that they are jealous of someone because of sheer stubbornness... and speaking of stubbornness, that's where pride falls into place.
The rest are pretty self explanatory... but it seems those 2 listed seemed to have been slightly misunderstood. And if you have all 7... it really DOESN'T cancel each other out... not at all. LMAO! But it's a nice theory.
I know some people who would LOVE to put that theory to the test though...
now see i think you could say that calling these things sins can be hurtful after all in one way or another they really are just natural feelings
But we know how strongly the Church was against Feeling Human in any matter, Heathen Thinking FateUnseen Heathen, Hellion, Hedonist!
hmmm
id have to go with lust on that one.
yes...lust is mine.
~W~
oh now thats just plain rude, just because I am a free thinker doesn't mean i don't have a heart
fateunseen doesn't know how to take a joke. it looks to me like dabbler is one full of dry humor. but i suppose it is easily missed if one is looking to be insulted. but they are called sins because they are negative human emotions. totally natural but still negative. if you piss me off and i wanna kill you, thats natural, but still wrong.
Envy, wrath, pride, sloth, gluttony, greed and lust
I wish I could say it were pride and wrath taking up the larger portion of the sins I perform, but of course, I indulge most prominently in the (in my opinion) more shameful of them; sloth, gluttony and lust. How easy it is to sleep life away, just as effortless it is to take up offers of delicious food or drink, and even harder to deny are the thoughts and desires of the flesh of others. So shameful UwU
I don't believe in Sins, i believe it's simply being human and each person has their own characteristics and most of which it hinders , or makes a person feel bad for being human. It easily makes the majority of people into a sinner and literally makes it impossible for anyone to be the "Angel". lol Just think how boring a person would be and the lack of personality they would have if they didn't fall to any of those catagories.
I am a sinner of all seven.
Wrath-- my anger always gets the best of me in my mind. I may not take it out on the person that's angered me, but it festers and boils under my skin till I finally have to pray for patience and peace.
Envy-- its human to want what you don't have. You see celebrites and how they have no need or wants when it comes to the basics of a nice home, dependable transportation, the ability to give their children all they could ever deserve.... I want to provide for my family like that, but I can't. I try not to let it get the best of me though and remember that I DO have want I need in my life, though not always what I want. So I need to be grateful.
Pride-- I have my moments where I think I look amazing and try to show it off. My moments where I think my achievements are better than my neighbors. Its childish and cruel of me...
Greed-- Even I've walked by the people trying to sell doughnuts in front of a store for a good cause to keep a few dollars. Walked past the stranger asking for some change to buy a drink. I try to tell myself, "They're strangers and you don't know what they are going to do with the money," but its still wrong. :(
Lust-- .... hehe. Well, I am preggers, so.... :)
Sloth-- Pfft. Its what I am doing now. Laying on my couch, watching family guy; while I have all this house work that needs to be done.
Gluttony-- :) About to hog out on a hot pocket and a box of Boston Creme Rolls whe I finish this post. Hey, I'm pregnant!!
I am trying to improve myself though. I pray and pray for strength, courage, peace, and commitment for better me each day. I've gotten much bettter as my years on this earth progress. I've gotten wiser and less selfish of my needs and more sacrificing of what I have. If I have al I need, why cant I give away what I want that someone else's needs? Becoming a parent (being pregnant) and really helped me to understand what selfless sacrifice really means and how much of a better person I want to become for my baby. :)
Myfault would be lust. We all have some faults in our lives that seem to control our inner thoughts and drives. Heck we are all human if you say there is none than your faults would be deception to yourself
Can you be proud to lust after greedy sloths who envy wrathful gluttons?
I do not see them as sin, yet possess all of them at one time or another. I enjoy all that life has to offer without the inhibitions that religion stigmatizes us with.
Is someone who eats more than their minimum nutritional value a glutton? you lose.
Is someone who wears more than is necessary to stay warm prideful? you lose.
Is someone who wears only what is necessary to remain warm guilty of lust? They're known as 'sluts' and 'whores'. you lose but only if yo sexi.
Is someone who feels an anger that they utilize in action guilty of wrath? we lost the army.
If you are starving and your neighbor has a feast are you guilty of envy? damn you emaciated fiends!
If there is work to be done but none can legally be done by you are you guilty of sloth? How dare you let a few health code violations stand in your way of security?
If you have more things than are necessary for your survival are you guilty of greed? Kiss your air conditioner cell-phone car speakers computer tv all that shiz goodbye.
There has to be a limit, otherwise nobody can live with anything reasonable. i dont think that's righteousness.
In my daily life, I most often succumb to lust, wrath, lust, sloth, lust, and pride. Oh, did I mention the lust thing too?
But seriously, as I think about it, it seems to me that each of the seven conditions condemned as "deadly sins", at least in the Christian tradition, have roots in very basic instincts that are necessary for survival. I joked about "lust," but its root is the basic sexual drive, which, of course, is necessary (or at least, a natural incentive) for procreation (making babies), which is good if you want to survive as a species. Even wrath has roots in the need to defend oneself from a threat -- to life, honor, family, integrity, etc. As I see it, the instincts on which the seven conditions are rooted are actually good, perhaps necessary for survival. Perhaps these conditions evolve into something bad only when we emphasize one or the other to the point where they are actually detrimental to our own health or survival, or when they cause us as individuals to interfere with someone else's right to life and survival.
By the way, does anybody know how this idea of "seven deadly sins" got associated with Christian tradition? I am not aware of any such discussion in the four traditional gospels or even in some of the allegedly apocryphal gospel traditions that I have come across.
"The theme of "The Seven Deadly Sins" has been a part of our culture. Marlowe's Faust is treated to a pageant of the sins which mirrored early popular morality plays. In "Camelot", Mordred sings "The Seven Deadly Virtues", a parody in which the bad knight chooses selfishness. David Niven and Jerry Pournelle updated Dante in their own "Inferno", in which a contrite Benito Mussolini guides the writer though a tour of sin in the modern world. David Fincher's "Seven" was among the most violent of all movies, though the violence was never shown, just as the seven deadly sins underlie all that is wrong in this world even though they are not actions in themselves."
From the following link:

Excess of anything has consequences.
But the key word is excess. When a person deteriorates to a subject of their vice, when they recklessly pursue their vice, at the expense of others, and their personal health.
Then Deadly is a fitting word. Some overlap
The Thief wanting wealth. Often to support an addiction.
A man spending his kids collage fund on prostitutes, and a mistress. Envy of unmarried men.
Thank you Dabbler! That excess of these is what is dangerous/deadly is a firmly held belief of mine. To add a few more examples:
Gluttony - the person who overeats to the point of weight gain so severe that they have problems walking, and are confined to a wheelchair for mobility. So many others could be impacted - family that the person lives with that now must assist the person in every day chores.
Lust - the person that will satisfy his/her lust, possibly spreading STDs without considering the consequences, or impregnating (or being impregnated by) more than one person - causing children who grow up on welfare without having a real relationship with both parents, thinking that life owes them instead of working to earn their way.
Lust leading to sloth.. I knewed there would be an overlap.
What I note often is that Envy is often aimed at Leisure
while a person may be getting by with what they have, as in having what they need, and even owning it, they are led to believe that leisure makes the image.
The one thing America Exports culture wise is Excess of Leisure, but Europeans seem to have their leisure more in context then here in the states.
Could leisure greed overlap envy? Or Visa versa
i think they can pretty much all overlap
You can be wrathful because greed has led you to envy
(i killed that person because i wanted her baby) (That shit happened, look it up)
You can be envious of someone's greed and lust-based wrath
(i want to kick ass like that for numerous sex too!)
unless you meant something else
Yup...guilty of all 7...for sure!
Mainly though...lust and pride...or...prideful lust!!
I think everyone falls prey to each sin at some point in their lives, some more than once.
mine is not a vise but a way to release pent up everything. Mine is horny, kinky, lust. yeah I said it I love sex. Like I said its not a vise but a release mechanism that I like and enjoy.
My sin would be lust...it seeps into my thoughts daily and permeates all aspects of my life...
I would say I'm guilty of all of them at one point or another. I'd be lying if I said I didn't portray (even on a small scale) some of them.
If I put them in order of which pops up the most to the ones least exhibited, it'd be: Lust, Envy, Wrath, Gluttony, Sloth, Pride and then Greed.
I've just come to accept them as part of my personality... just like everything else that influences my life.
I think everyone exhibits them all at one time or another
Seven Deadly Sins??
Are you kidding... I usually commit at least 5 of them simple by trying to get my hands on the last bread stick at Olive Garden. lol
did you know originally there were more than just 7 deadly sins and they were created to keep the religious monks faithful
Really? Did not know that. Although I find it interesting that these were not all the original sins listed in the Bible, yet they are the ones that the most focus is placed on.
Why do you guys think that is?
As for me, it will be all 7. Take a look at yourself, at one time or another we've done all of them. As we look back on our decisions we sometimes wonder if we took another avenue of approach would it have changed anything.
Personally, I don't believe in the word "sin." People should enjoy what they desire, without guilt, as long as there's no deliberate harm done to themselves, and others
Eat what you desire, drink, smoke, have sex until your eyeballs fall out, I say!
Just more man made things to keep you awake at night saying ooo... I,m such a bad person...
Sin is just a word relevant to the environment you live in...
right now theft, eating people and murder are big no no's..
If the Solar flare vaporises the ozone layer in 2012 all the food/crops will fail...You will be amazed how quick we are back to the Lord of The Rings...
"Looks like meat's back on the Table Boy's..."
; )
P.S. Luv that line.
Sadly I suffer from pride all too often. I often refuse help from others even when I know I may fail at a task without their assistance. I have gotten better and significantly lowered my pride over the years, but at times it still seems to be a dominate painful factor in my personality.
I think all sins are caused by the deadly
sin of wrath, but don't think that give it
the right to choose if i go to hell or heaven.
i think fate will tell me in time
Dark Angel
WRATH AND LUST FOR ME AS I HAVE A OTT SEXDRIVE AND ONE HORRIBLE TEMPER WICH I AINT PROUD OF! ALTHOUGH IT HAS ACTUALLY SAVED MY LIFE BEFORE
My sin is being pirdeful, I sometimes let my pride get in the way of myself at times. yet, it normally is when I get mad LOL
lol ok, I confess, Im guilty of all these deadly sins at one time or another and the thing is, thats what makes me human. Thats not something I ever want to change. What a boring life it would be if I wasnt such a 'sinner'.
ok envy but not me for others that just want to be be haha only messing i would have to say lust ,i love to look but i dont touch so im a good girl really ;p
Ugh..confusing..Vice and VISE.
Anyways, SLOTH.
I tend to go lazy and eventually NOT to do anything from time to time..BUT thankfully, I haven't become a couch potato..which probably would ignite Gluttony..
I realize that this is not about hell but it has been mentioned so I feel like flowing with that part. It is not only the 7 deadly sins that get you there but lying backbiting and a host of other things. All in all it is not that hard to go to heaven but there will still be more in hell due to the fact that many a "Christian" is only that in word and not in deed or spirit.
By this I mean, they pray that their neighbor will have bread but do nothing to help them get it. They hold grudges against others who have probably sinned in what we would consider smaller ways than the sin they feel was done to them.
There are pedophiles in the church that are active, (not just priest either), drug dealers, alcoholics and more. The only thing that makes them less likely to go to heaven than any one else is an unwillingness to admit that they are doing anything wrong. To make a long story short, Bertha Better Than You is more likely to go to hell that the bum in the corner praying for his sins.
