To answer my own question. I can't help but think this is a hoax. I wouldn't be surprised if this is debunked in the near future as a hoax.

For starters George Clarke is a film maker and has a movie he wants promoted. So having a Chaplin film surface with a time travelling old woman with a mobile phone in her ear would be great promotion for his film.

The other thing I noticed was that the old woman, starts to vanish when they do close ups and you can almost see the background behind her. So unless she is vanishing back to some time in the future or she is a ghost??? well...

And finally, how did her phone even work, no towers or technology to bounce her signal off and send back to the future, it all seems rather far fetched to me.

The film is clearly a fake.
The quality of the film is really good for a 1928 news feed... in Ireland.
But despite that, and even if you are willing to look past some other obvious flaws the answer to the question is she a time traveler talking on a cell phone is simple... who in 1928 could she even have been talking to??
As you said yourself none of the support devices that make cellular communication possible would be available for for at least another 50 years.

Unless off course she was asking Mr. Scott to beam her up.

And besides, That can't be a little old lady..More like a guy in drag, Or this little old lady isn't so little and has gigantic feet ! That screams flaw! Women back then were shorter, and had tiny feet.

You can do much now with film, Add or remove people,and objects. And the flaw of the person fading out. Any good time travaler who just wanted to walk around and see the sights wouldn't just go and see a movie some where, I think they would be able to actualy be there right where they are making movie.

lol, looks like a small am radio to me, yes people used to hold them to their ears like that when trying to hear them and the fact she is older may contribute to hearing issues, thus explaining more why it would be up to her head.

I consider time travelling an impossibility. As it would change itself the future and therefore make it not possible to time travel, as the changes would modify, kind of like some theory showed: you kill a fly in prehistoric time and you end up with dogs ruling earth and humans being pets. Or worst it could end up the whole planet never growing and become only a satellite planet floating in space to no where.

The fabric of time can not be change, because changing it will change the time travel possibility itself, and making it impossible.

This my view of it, so this movie is only a hoax.

It is shadow touch up, she is likely holding her cap down, a prime subject for adulterating an image for the purpose mentioned already above. I like the hoax though, it is creative.

I watched it the other day when I saw the story.

1.A woman was filmed dressed in vintage clothing and that footage was cut into the actual footage.

2.The reason she seemed to fade into the background...the editing wasn't fixed for extreme close ups.

3.Time travel is possible and the doorway was still open and she was keeping in contact with ever who she was working with.

Three possible answers to think about....

anything is possible.. i always wondered when some one said they had déjàvu.. If they had some sort of time travel or were experiencing something they has seen in what we call another life.
 

Déjàvu is considered by some to be time travel to a small degree. I have yet to see any documentation about it however.

I agree it is very creative. my time travel is books.. i leave reality and go anywhere i want to or any place i can go in my books.. that is all the time travel i need. there is one other time travel i like to go to.. that is exploring old sections of towns or ghost towns. when i get married and finally move to where my husband lives i will get to explore an ancient civilization and can say in my small way i have time traveled

I don't believe in time traveling personally and I don't think this woman is either. Some suggested that it could be an ear horn since they used them back in those days, it's a fairly short clip of her, and i'm more curious what a zebra is doing there LOL

I wouldn't mind seeing some other footage of the film that would prove one way or another if the film has been tampered with.

I think this is a hoax its just too easy in this day and age to do these sort of things and past it off as the truth.

idk...i wayched the 8min video on you tube with george clark actually pointing out some of the things you all are saying make it a hoax...looks like a man in drag, big feet, the vanishing look(cross fade), he points out the dvd collection its on and tells people to get the charlie chaplin set and watch for yourself...unless he owns the right to charlie chaplins films he didnt alter it, so that all sets available to buy are gonna be the same...i guess the biggest question is what kinda technology was available in 1928 that could be talked on or listened to that was simular in size to a cell phone..

I have done research about it..and even in the old films it's there....so no it was NOT altered, as they didn't have that ability in 1928....

so... thinking the footage was altered is not correct, but people will say anything to disbelieve something.... however... she could have just been a crazy old lady holding up something to her ear and talking to herself to hear her own voice... much like people do when they plug their ears to listen to their voice in louder areas.

I don't think it is real. Would be very interesting to see the original clip to see if that person was there or not.

Even though I would be over the moon if it was true, things just dont add up to be a time traveller.

i just think it is something simply misunderstood as being a cellphone... I dont believe it is a time traveler... but come one guys... it's unrealistic to figure the recording was tampered with...because as I said before.... they have checked the original recordings...AND this man does not have the rights to alter any of the recordings either way.... I agree the footage is real, it appears to be an old 'lady' maybe just holding onto her hat or trying to avoid the camera by shielding her face just exactly as I would do if I found I was walking past a film crew. Just before she appears to fade out of the scene, there is nothing in her hand as far as I can see. Its ludicrous to suggest that time travelling is the explanation though, c'mon, really???

While I think that the idea it is a small radio (read transistor radio) that is not possible as the transistor radio did not come around until 1954. All other radios were mosters in the 20's. It certainly looks like am man holding his hand to the side of his face to block his features, nothing more. It just so happens that this would be the easiest way to block out someones gender unobtrusively. A great his "talk to the hand" would be too obvious a sign that the person did not want his/her gender shown on film. If you notice that as the person turns the hand looks empty it it turns into what looks like a head scratch.

Since you need cell towers for a cell phone to work; I'm fairly confident this is not someone who is talking on a cell phone.

look at the pictures of hearing aids in the 1920's and perhaps that is the answer. It does look like she is talking and this could be to see if the device is working.

Time traveling just seems way too far off into the future. It could have been a hearing device, but then again there are some pretty weird things out there

I agree.... there are many things in this world that people do and will not understand.... However, everyone has opinions to what is real and what they feel is impossible... and expression of opinions is what these forums are for.

We should be encouraging being to question things... only then will we gain wisdom. Its someone who disbelieved that the world was flat who changed our outlook as a whole... I think the power of suggestion comes into play here - the youtube vid creator puts forward a coherent, logical argument, therefore we are disinclined to question what hes actually arguing about - but really, a mobile phone in the 1920s??? Time travel??? there are probably 1001 more appropriate explanations for the figure, perhaps she's just muttering to herself as she goes past, I'm still not convinced she's even holding something, if you look at the very last shot of her, its not too clear there is anything at all in her hand.

I thought it looked a little too high tech for 1920s technology as well....But in the 20s... there where already small hearing aids that people more like... headphones... but they kept the actual device concealed like in a bag or a purse... or even on their body....

Wow I have to say the site I got my image from stated that it was a 1920's hearing aid and not 1940's. I am going to look into this right now to see if I can find any more images of hearing aids in the 1920's...... (I am not able to find any) I now have gone direct to Octicon who were responsible for the hearing device we see in that image to see if they can shed some light on the matter.

The only other images I can find which could be a possible is in the hearing aid museum are of the box with the round...well hears (lol) the picture...maybe that is the reason for not seeing an actual object in her hand.



Then after looking and discussing with my little beasts we found this....Western Electric Model 34A "Audiphone"



I would like to add my daughter thinks IT IS A TIME TRAVERLER where as my son is on the fence.

I still am in the frame of mind that this could be a hearing device.

but... yes... many of those devises, however, where put in their ear like a headphone bud ... thats what the cord is for... and the actual device was hidden... so using this information, I don't believe it was that, because holding up the device to your ear wouldn't help any.... as it would be like someone holding up a ipod to their ear..... no... thats what the headphone is for.... you see? So I don't believe it is a hearing devise at all anymore... I still thing she was a crazy old woman babbling to herself... Back in that day, it was embarrassing to walk around with hearing devises... However it could be an old outdated model... but the color of the devise is silver.... you have to keep in mind in the 1920s... things didn't come in different colors often.... the one model was it.... thats all.... so I doubt it was a hearing devise as it is nowhere to be found until an identical copy from the 1940s submerged .... which is really odd.

I think the biggest question for me is....even if a WHERE a hearing aid....

Ok how about this, if time travel was possible, then why isn't there more evidence of it. If they are keeping it a secret, then by now they would realise that they have been discovered. So why haven't they gone back and changed the circumstances that had them caught on film in the first place?

IF time travel were possible...you have to think about paradoxes of time travel.Altering time lines and the possibilty of changing history in that time line.

1.Why would this person travel back to this moment in time...only to be captured on film?

2.IF they were a time traveler...how would they communicate with the future?

3.IF there was a doorway between the timelines...would they use a cell phone or something more reliable??

Think about it more closely...if there is proof the film wasn't doctored...then what exactly was going on with this person.

There is a possibility that she is an alien from another planet communicating with her space ship...lol

Or there is another possibility, that it is a deliberate action by the film makers or Chaplin by having that person do what they are doing?

------Maybe this is the "beam me up Scotty" device I was talking about.... it just happens too have the same shape as a cell phone... many other devise have a generic hand held square shape as well.


So... though these questions are interesting.... they really trigger no significant bells as to why you feel time traveling does not exist... I'm just answering as someone who believes it IS a time traveler would. You have to keep in mind... if it where a time traveler... they would be from the future as well, therefore would have more advanced technology than we had ever seen..... Try explaining the internet to someone in the 50s and they would think we were all on drugs... we might just not understand how the technology works... BUT as I stated before, I'm still not convinced it is time travel.

I am pretty sure she is carrying a hearing aid. I looked it up and they were not the type hidden in the ear and small. They were rectangular and about the size of a cell phone that one would carry around. I don't think they were all black but they didn't have the technology then for what we think of a hearing aid now.

If it is a hearing device the illusion is that it is allowing us to think that she is talking into it when she could be just talking.

I dunno if basing possible real events off of a movie is the most credible information. Many movies make up things to make a movie sound interesting and entertianing.... most movies are not based off real scientic evidence at all... now if we had a legit scientific theory instead of a movie plot... it will have more pull. If you can find a legit theory on how this would work in reality, I would be very interested to read about it.

The video narrator is a bit annoying to me with the constant insistance that he cannot find anyone to offer an explanation as to what this could be.

I see a few reasonable explanations right here in this thread - none of which would require time travel.

I recall watching a documentary recently with Morri where the topic of time travel was brought up... the scientist they were interviewing stated he does not believe humans will ever discover the secrets to time travel... why? Because we're not surrounded by people from the future.

There would need to be some kind of space and time relation where all events that were ever to happen have happened. Without that, time travel is just not logical.

I'm not sure what is in that person's hand. If it is a cell phone, the video is a hoax. If it's not, it is something else.

yep, I would agree with that Birra. The narator is doing a good job of planting the suggestion that really, there is no other explanation except time travel. I've seen folk walking and muttering to themselves, perhaps she was remembering her shopping list, pissed that she had been caught on camera, or maybe just muttering insanely. She could also have been just holding her hat, clutching money in her hand (for her shopping), trying to hide her face, or maybe she always walks like that. Charlie Chaplin loved a laugh, maybe the old woman was there for some sort of joke, we will never know.

Look up this scientist his name is michio kaku and the book is called physics of the impossible. Michokaku goes into detail of time travel on the level and explanation of quantum physics.

Well, AlieNation, if you would take the time to follow the ENTIRE thread, you will see, that I do not believe time travel is impossible, I just simply do not believe THIS is an instance of time travel. I feel that everyone is entitled to whatever opinion they choose, but with that opinion, they should hold proof as to why they do or do not believe it is something. I like to challenge people in their explination as to why they do or do not believe. I am one to openly admit when I have been bested, but the only way to figure something out is to chanallege it... but it seems some people are too easily offended. I never once called anyone WRONG. I simply ask more questions or give more sugestions as to what can be going on, just as you are doing now.

So, I do believe time travel is possible, HOWEVER....I do not believe THIS is a time traveler... I think it is someone being completely innocent in their everyday activities and someone conspiracy theorist went and blew it WAY out of proportion.

I honestly get the feeling that its an anachronism easter egg added to the footage just for the DVD, that if you clicked on it with a certain button combo you'd get a secret menu or something. That's not unheard of.

who knows what we can achieve in the future. Everyone puts things down because we cannot do it now. We have advance so much since the 1900's. Look at the Wright brothers for example a couple of yrs b4 hand ppl would say it is impossible to fly or even go to the moon and now we do both.

Yes we can be skeptic but look at our pass and look how far we have come and imagine what we can do in the future.

I believe time travel is possible however, I feel skeptical looking at this. Granted, there are technologies floating around that are not in the public area nor do the general public know about them. So this might be real who knows?

I really doubt that this actual clip is real. There are to many anomalies in relation to it. The biggest is being able to speak on a phone in that era. But again as I already stated who knows wat we are capable of in the future. Maybe we will have the tech like Dr Who when he made a mobile be able to ring no matter where it is in space and time.

I watched William Shater's TV show ''Wierd or What'' and on this episode he was talkin about Time Travelling. Apparently these 2 females went to the bathroom and one came out and was standing at the door. The other female came out of the cubicle and out of no where a female appeared. This female looked confused and dazed. They both walked out and the female standing outside told the other female that no one had entered....Wierd or what!!!!

Then he started talken about the Elidor Scope and speaking with the scientist working on it they recon that in the future if things go according to plan we may be able to bend time and thus be able to Time Travel.

So it looks like we already looking at being able to Time Travel.

I think the film would be a hoax. I think of time as cyclic like a loop in space and time where we could go back. I was watching a documentry called The First Time Machine about a Physicist called Professor Ronald Mallet that is doing research in building the first time machine, and he uses mathematical equations in Quantum theory to work out how to go back in time.

I dont see why a mobile phone seems to be the only possible conclusion. There are numerous things that person could be doing including talking to herself, trying to shield her face from the camera or holding onto her hat.

It is like Microsoft, they set out with a complex product they do not really understand and let it fly.
Then holes appear. problems occur, and they start pushing out bigger and bigger patches in the hope it will all settle down. Sooner or later a nasty tear will occur and thats when things get really cool. (As long as you like meat)
