I was wondering if there was any physical benifits to drinking or using blood? Apart from the obvious of people who drink it to survive?
For example, Countess Bathory bathed in blood of virgins to keep her youth but has there been any scientific studies or theories about drinking, bathing in or in some way using blood? Does anyone use blood for other than drining? And if so how?
Actually if a human drinks more than a pint of blood it would make them sick. I haven't heard of anything scientific besides that on this subject.
I would have to agree with the part about drinking too much blood. It will make you sick, in fact I'm not exactly sure how the idea of Vampires drinking blood really works.
I mean you have essentially undead bodies...Zombies with brains so to speak. How does just drinking blood keep them from decomposing or just plain, dying again?
Perhaps blood is good for the skin, I really wouldn't doubt it. Considering all the other things that have been proven to soften and revive one's skin blood seems like a pretty likely candidate.
...Of course, it would probably smell, pretty nasty..
Some people benefit from the iron, others the concentration of the same element would make them ill.
There is nothing that i know of (let's consult google!) about any other properties.
Thank you memnoch123 for that fabulous insight...
I really think we could leave off the sexual aspect of blood drinking...
If you were to say, bathe in a pool of blood what sort of chemicals in the blood would really affect you? When blood isn't inside a body does it lose a lot of its properties?
So perhaps ingesting small amounts of it would help fight sickness or what? Blah, I cannot word my questions the way I would like to but I hope you get the general idea of what I'm saying. I'm going to research more on this though...
Although I have never drank or used blood for any other purpose, scientifically speaking, there is no proof that this would benefit you. In fact, many individuals within the scientific field would contest by informing you that exposure to another's bodily fluids is potentially harmful. Because of all the diseases , etc. that may be contained within these fluids I would have to agree.
Peoples (yes, plural), have been using bodily fluids for many things throughout history. Blood being one of them. Miraculous cures do not and have not work. But it was amusing to see a scene in the vamp show "Forever Knight." Seems the character Nick Night keeps blood in the refrigerator to make paint with. lol. Since blood was well known for its clotting ability, "man" has been using blood to paint with before time. All that was needed was to get blood from an animal and pick a colored mineral. *poof* Paint.
There have also been countless blood rituals too.
Thank everyone for your ideas, particularly Morrigon, your ideas are the kind of think I was wanting to know too...
Keep 'em coming people!
Blood dries A wonderful Earth tone brown. Wonderful thing To Paint with, I was always hopeing actually one day to Find an artist that could do such and not be repulsed.
In a Para Sense, Painting with blood form's Barries And reinforces existing one's.
On the topic of painting with blood I've heard that many old buildings had their roofs painted in blood because it water proofs them very well.
And I do agree that too much blood would make one sick but iron and other nutrients might be healthy in small quantities.
Yes, To much Blood causes septic shock and liver failure.
Hence the saying , Don't overdue it. Take only what you need.
Never thought blood could be that harmful in large quantities. I've always imagined it as probably a very good source of nutrition because it seems so pure. Sort of like how meat is so healthy and complete because it's in a very similar form unlike vegetables and other plants that your body would have to process. I guess all the harmful results of too much blood has kept it off the selves of grocery stores.
Human blood Is a federal controlled substance, once it leave's the body and is stored in any fashion.
Being in possision of this is a BIG federal offense. Hence why blood is Worth So much. But on the other end, Keeping blood stored is a very costly endeaver.
I've had very little experience with blood other than my own and I had never really concidered why it is never sold or bought. I wonder why there are such strict laws against it. Is it also very hard to store because it might clot?
This is why its expensive and the answear to your question I hope:
"Blood is collected into a plastic bag for blood collection & storage which contains anticoagulant/buffers etc. which allow storage of blood. These include citrate-phosphate dextrose (CPD), acid-citrate dextrose (ACD), ACD or CPD with adenine to prolong red cell storage, and other preservative solutions like SAGM etc. If red cells are preserved in SAGM solution then their life goes upto 42 days. The CPD solution preserves whole blood for 21 days whereas CPDA solution preserves blood for 35 days. The material of the bag is biocompatible with blood cells and allows diffusion of gases permitting optimal cell preservation. The specimen thus collected is tested for hepatitis B & C, HIV and other infections. The blood is stored in refrigerators at 2 to 6 degrees C.
Each unit of whole blood normally is separated into several components. Red blood cells may be stored under refrigeration for a maximum of 42 days, or they may be frozen for up to 10 years. Red cells carry oxygen and are used to treat anaemia. Platelets are important in the control of bleeding and are generally used in patients with leukaemia and other forms of cancer. Platelets are stored at room temperature and may be kept for a maximum of five days. Fresh frozen plasma, used to control bleeding due to low levels of some clotting factors, is kept in a frozen state for usually up to one year. Cryoprecipitate, which contains only a few specific clotting factors, is made from fresh frozen plasma and may be stored frozen for up to one year. Granulocytes are sometimes used to fight infections, although their efficacy is not well established. They must be transfused within 24 hours of donation.
Other products manufactured from blood include albumin, immune globulin, specific immune globulins, and clotting factor concentrates. Commercial manufacturers commonly produce these blood products.
Stored RBCs develop complex and multiple membrane changes leading to increased osmotic fragility (due to shape change), decrease in the level of 2,3-DPG (increasing the oxygen affinity of haemoglobin), reduced ATP levels, loss of potassium ions with seeping in of sodium ions, loss of deformability of RBCs and reduced life span."
Please remember to include your links,

Thank-you very much for all that information. So it is mainly the difficulty of storing blood that makes it so hard to come by. And also one would have to check for all the different diseases because there are so many that scientists have discovered now a days.
I feel so new to this vampire world but I am so glad that I can learn from people and by reading the forums and other articles.
"How does just drinking blood keep them from decomposing or just plain, dying again?"-Morrigon
As for that, according to myth it wasn't the blood that kept them alive, it was the life force flowing in it.
Hence on the other thread how I talked of that one. And yes and no to that, Their are sevral Debate's arising from that belief.
I must admit I find it erotic to play with blood... but I don't do anything with it... not really
As far as I know there is plenty of scientifical reasons that you shouldn't drink blood, but none that you should.
yeah if you drink more than a pint of blood you do get sick. and ive not seen any benefical use of it that works. but you do have to be extremely careful when drinking blood, blood rituals etc.
I rely heavily on the energy of others for sustenance, and I am not a sanguinist. However, if sanguinism is anything like what I am more familiar with, all it does is replenish your lost reserves.
With the energy-based vampirism, you can use someone else's energy to keep yours at peak level, but I do not believe blood has any such effect.
Again, this is just my semi-educated guess. I know what books say, but I cannot state anything for 100% unless I actually know it to be true.
There are many creatures on this planet that feed upon blood; vampire bats and leeches just to name a couple. In their case, they are after the blood for it's nutritional value and it works for them. Since blood is what carries nutrients, oxygen, minerals, etc. to the various parts of the body, it's easy to see why they would benefit from this. They are getting a meal that has already been filtered and broke down into it's basic, "absorbable" components.
Vampires are supposed to be either undead, infected with a disease, or just people who crave the taste of blood according to whatever philosophy you subscribe to. If they are undead, they are not capable of producing their own blood cells and so maybe they have to replenish themselves from "donors" in order to survive. The same might be said for the philosophy that explains vampirism as a virus-based disease that affects the red blood cells, changing them into a form incapable of carrying oxygen molecules. As far as the simple form of vampirism goes, people that just like blood, it must have some nutritional value with all the proteins, vitamins, and minerals it contains. Personally, if my burger or steak isn't bloody rare, I won't like it. Furthermore, meat that is over cooked tends to give me a stomach ache and seems to take alot longer to digest!
Some religions see blood as containing life (i.e. Judaism, Christianity, the ancient Aztec religions). Only their deity is permitted to consume the blood. This may be why vampirism is frowned upon in those religions. Blood is needed to sustain life and is highly valued as such.
There is a condition called hemophilia where people have to literally drink blood to stay alive because they lack the iron contents in the blood....
aliravrykul,
I believe that you are mistaken in this statement.
Hemophilia is treated with a clotting factor extract from blood.
It has nothing whatsoever to do with the Iron content, nor would drinking it have any effect.
The only thing I've heard that blood helps in emergencies at the hospital for blood transfusions.
Ok human blood is full of vitamins and oxigen.
And if u bath in blood. It can help ur skin to regenerate.
But this is not practical
As it was stated before drinking blood is not good at all, unless you wanna be sick.
As for the use done with it it was mention paint, yes it was done, also for the clothing to mark it, and also to mark the body in some ritual and not always to be wash right after but to be kept under the cloth or directly on the clothing on the edge or underside.
There is one blood that tho some human eat (not drink cause it get cooked) and since a long time around at least 2500 years ago it was the first mention of it, and now our day its called black pouding or blood sausage (in french boudin) its not a joke for those who think it is, it made of pig blood, I tried it and personnaly I did not lik eit at all not at all
So I have been vegan for the past year and I read somewhere in this post that meat is easier to digest than plants... This idea is far from the truth.
It is my belief that you can draw energy from eating living raw food (i.e. veggies and fruit)...
Anyways...
Even is blood did improve your skin and make you youthful.. It would probably take alot, which I do not believe I could stomach. :)
There are many other natural ways to improve your skin and keep your youth.
The idea of blood doing so is very alluring.
The Blood Countess only used the blood of young maidens. Which makes me wonder if the type of blood used is the main factor in whether this really works or not.
Using blood for painting is a most do :)
I am going to have to try this.
Ok, This entire forum is intresting, And has alot of speculation. However, We just got done with some intresting research on this topic.
Patient's in our controlled study, One a Placebo Group, And another the normal group, We have seen that in this study That in the placebo group, 4 out of ten patient's exhibited Changes in the CBC count And Hepatatic panel count. We saw that's these four patient's shown changes in white/red/platelet count, As well as AST ,ALT enzyme count. Where as In the "Normal" group exhibited 7 out of 10.
So in a scientific finding, We saw beneficial as well as detrimental result's. My Opinion, Lady's and Gentlemen, Is that you should gou out and try if you truly are curiose and get your fact's. Doctor's can't exactly get funding to find if injesting blood is helpful. Hard as hell, And good luck on getting any, ANY boared of Directors of any hospitial or university to fund that one, Much Less not fire you.
Except us. We have no problem funding these experiment's. As a poster above did mention, It does have a direct results with stomach acid's, if it wasn't broken down by the time it got their.
In my earlier post I mentioned that maybe it is the type of blood that needs to be considered.
I am sure many here know a thing or two about the practice of cannibalism.
From my understanding many believe they take on a part of that person (i.e. stength, courage, love etc) that they have consumed.
Some tribes still practice eating their loved ones after they have passed, in fact in these tribe not doing so is very disrespectful. Would this be a way of holding on, to a part of that person?
I guess it could be a matter of taking on the attributes of another being though consumption or absorbtion.
Any thoughts?
I am sang.vampire and so I do feed with blood occasionally. blood is also used in many magick rituals.
I don't know much of the science behind sanq vampirism. I don't drink too much of it, but also use it in rituals.
Hmm I haven't really thought about that very much. But humans, if they drink too much they can kill themselves or make themselves very sick. But I haven't really read that many vampire books so I wouldn't know about bathing in it. I don't even really know the benefit of drinking it either....
Drinking blood will make a person sick... I can't remember why. And the whole bathing in virgin blood thing... ew... I'm all for blood but that's just gross.. could you imagine the smell of all that blood after a while. Gag..... Anyway, I don't think too many people read into it so much as others. No one really cares enough about it.
Science and Vampirism have an interesting connection in that when discussing true Vampirisn both Sanguine and Psy it is possible to use science as a means of explination and in a way "proof" . It has been more than well documented that Psy Vamps exist. The need for energy to maintain health in these individuals comes primarily from a shortage of the "basline energies" assosiated with human consciousness which can be mathinmaticaly theroized at exisiting beyond the 4th and 5th diminsions. Feeding off others energies simply redirects the quantum fields associated with consciouse life to fit in with the QF of the Vampire.
Blood drinking Vampires is a little different. There is no true need to to be completly Sang. Apart from certian memories and the immediate actual health benifits with in blood, one may recieve the same life restoring/aiding properties from Psy. Through certian exercises it is possible to over come the need for drinking blood. That is not to say it is bad or a Sang. Vampire should stop.
Both types of Vampires may have a genetic link however they do have in my estimation a link between the conscious mind of the individual and the general consciousness of their Ancestors , thus altering a "normal" (I hate that word) to being a Vampire.
I hope this helps.
I beleive that a normal person will have no effects with drinking blood except for getting sick but when one becomes a vampire their cells change and that only then does blood helpd ur cells grow and regenerate
rhfurth,
What gives you the belief that this is the case please?
I am interested to understand why you believe this, where I do not.
Thank you, Xzavier. I found your post very interesting and helpful.
-Isis-
I don't think drinking blood has any benefit except iron. But then, for those who consume cow meat, there is iron in that also.
I believe its people that are anemic that need blood transfusions to survive.
I have drank more then a pint of blood without getting sick...But then again I would hardly be considered human lol The celtic people believed that if you drank someones blood you would receive all thier strenght and so on also blood is used in witchcraft to enhance fertility and used to make love potions.
As drinking blood can (as nearly everyone has said) make you sick, I wonder if a vampire can get its fulfillment out of having a blood transfusion ?
Would it be the components of the blood or the act of taking it that gives the vampire what they need ?
Could it be the various energy (pleasure, fear whatever) that the vampire is in fact feeding on while drinking ?
well blood contain iron and too much iron can kill a person so we humans have to drink in small amounts.
the iron is blood is what people needed way back before you could get iron pills and because it is already in a form that can be digested it made it an easy remedy for people who were anemic
well I use blood for magic but I don't think that what you want I have not read or heard of any studies out side of blood drinking sorry
