i dont know if anyone els has had this problem, but i need help!!!
when i try to meditate i get so far and i reach a wall, or i see a shadow like creature and cant get any farther...
If you have had success in the past at that location. You might want get up, talk a walk or something,, and go back later. I've found no success in busting through an wall like that.
Don't know if you have tried Zen meditation. This works the best for me. It's more about letting in what you hear, feel, and sense.
I know it must be frustrating, but hang in there. You should find lots of advice here
Blessed Be
thank you for your input... ill look into zen meditation
I'm not able to relax/slow down long enough to clear my mind to even start to meditate.
That's something I need to work on, but I think I have adult ADD. Oh well.
it's better to walk away nad try again than use all of your energy trying to pass the obstical
Start to see a door in your wall, might take a while but eventually you will be able to proceed.*bows*
Hey Honey...
thanks for approaching us for help.
ok.. I have a suggestion.
If this creature is the same most times you have tried..could this 'creature' be the reason why you wish to meditate.. perhsp the creature is symbolic to what you are facing..
if so..perhaps become stronger in your mind.. and then try again to meditate.
the creature could an element of 'self' that you challenge perhaps.
angry with yourself??
only you would know if this fits.
i have come across this before SO i wanted to share to try to help.
Blessed be.
x
I agree with Minx this creature could be a part of you and maybe you need to face it. The door in the wall is also a very good way to help you pass this barrier. Getting up and walking away is good. More than anything you have to settle the frustration it could be why you can't break through it.
Concentrate on your breathing. When you go into meditation, and a thought comes into your mind like i have to make a call picture a window and throw the thought out the window and resume the meditation. This may help
Ive had this happen before,in my xcase it was a manifistation of my own fear of going further than i had gone before, when this was realized finally i was able to "beat" my "creature" and move past it
She mentions a "shadow like creature" and not a creature. This is the Ego trying to express itself. There is no creature there. When you meditate you are letting go of your thoughts. This is very scary for the Ego. It feels scared. It will manifest things that will bring you back to itself. If a shadow, then the feelings of ants crawling on you, or your stomach making noises, or the uncomfortable position that you are in. None of this matters, it is all the ego trying to say "Hey, remember me?"
I have been doing meditation for over thirty plus years. There many obstacles and this is only one of them. Do take that break as other members have stated. Keep your calm and patience, and keep at it. Meditation is not a goal to reach. It is a state of mind - without fear. Tell the Ego, your inner child, that it is not going anywhere and everything is alright. I would also get a good instructor. This path is not for walking alone. Even Swamis have someone.
it took me ages of practice before i could clear my mind and shut out all the other thoughts. i can only do it well if there are otherpeople with me like my coven here. then we all concentrate on one thing.
When you next see this creature, or wall.
STOP.
do NOT back up.
DO NOT fight it.
it IS a sign, believe it or not.
The path between you inner self and your outer self are merely the distance and interaction between you conscious and subconscious minds.
THIS is the TRUE state of meditation.
The "wall" or "monster" is merely your reflex point of mixing the two stages.....
(you know how the doctor tests your knee-jerk reflex??? well THAT is because a SUDDEN stretch of the muscle is dangerous, so it automatically protects a stretch (strain) by contracting it. Follow me?
Link: you are actually mentally AWAKE, when you are passing into your sub-conscious mind, i.e meditation. The BLOCK is simply to prevent the two meeting..... it COULD be dangerous for you to go into a drem and BELIEVE you can chop all your limbs off and still survive... so your conscious brain is not allowing you to delve into it.....
Be gentle....
Here's how i find the best way to get around or through it. (the above methods work too, but obviously, the more strategies you learn, the more chance you have of passing through!)
firstly, Inspect the Wall or Monster.... (herein refereed to as Block)
show it you aren't afraid of it, but ALSO show it that IT should not be afraid of you.
spend time walking around it, up to it, away from it, at different angles, if you have the ability to make yourself float, do so. crouch.
look at it all over, examine it as it you were to be asked to draw in flawlessly the next day.
you should find that the barrier will adjust, drop, change or even disappear. maybe not the first time. maybe not the second. but the more you examine the Block, the more you will see DIFFEERENT about it next time...... has the writing on the seventh brick changed? has the monster got a less-sloped brow?
find a way to befriend the block. love the wall/monster, let it love you.
I used to get a shadow that was a solid mist. it hurt when i approached it. i learnt this method and i eventually broke it down. the mist got smaller, and although i couldn't walk around it (it moved to block my path), i continued.
eventually, it turned into a living reresentation of myself. It was an animal, but i SAW me, as if a mirror, even though it wasn't the "me" that a photograph would take.
From there, i found a certain peace within myself, and now, i do NOT progress until i see "him". i have free entry, (i have been meditating for 20 years, since i was small, in some way or another). I often Fight" this wolf-like creature that is me. some i win, some i lose. but i will NEVER let him out of my site, or vice versa.
that may be a long way down the line for you, but as everyone here has said.... YOU are the block.... it is just YOU asking YOURSELF "do you REALLY want to go inside of there??"
it is GOOD that this Block exists. just remember..... befriend it.
YOU CAN DO NO HARM TO YOURSELF WHEN YOU GET INSIDE. just always remember the way out, and what is real, and what is not.
(like playing a driving game on a console and then going for a real drive)
I hope i haven't bored you, but i have recently started enjoying the art of NLP and meditation again, having lost myself for a while due to ill health.
Good luck, and Bon Voyage! :)
Beside the already mention advice of not fighting it, and not stop for it, I would sugest maybe to reassure it, as it is (I knwo already mention ) your ego, or otherself that watchs over you the little voice at times telling you to go the other way, in this case it is just insecure and affraid, Reassuring, mentionning to it that all will be perfect, all will go well, that nothing is gonna hurt you or it.
hey!
That's moreorless exactly what i said but in a fraction of the time and space!!!
Thanks, Crying Mist!!! LoL
*walks away, chuckling to himself, feeling like a total plum!!!!
:)
I find that when I hit a block like that, it is usually because I am trying to hard to force my way past it, which disrupts my harmony as I get frustrated with my failure, thus making the wall stronger.
What I do in this case, is try to go into a kind of trance of sorts. It's not really a real trance, per sé, but I start to breathe rhythmically, and focus all of my conscious thought on listening to my own breathing. If I am successful at focussing on my breath, then my conscious mind clears of all other things, and I find that I can pass the blockade effortlessly, sometimes without even realizing I've done it.
I hope that was helpful ♥
After reading a much long winded explanation of what is called mind games, I find it amusing to see what people come up with to outwit themselves. Remember that you are the one creating the block and you are the one trying to out smart yourself. Silly, is it not? But this is one of the other things that I mentioned that shows up.
The Ego is an inner child. It will do anything and everything to call attention to itself. To creating tumors to causing war. This is one child that wants to be known. It is built into the physical body. You can not get rid of it. Many have tried to fight it or ignore it. All have failed.
The other thing to remember, and remember is a keyword, is our real nature of spirit. But we need to calm our Ego to listen. This causing a conflict between the two. It as been called a Holy war by some and is the real meaning of Jihad. This battle has been going on for some time. You can not win it by out smarting the enemy. Because "you" are that enemy.
Practice is the only way with meditation. Sometimes using a mantra will help because it will keep the mind busy while the body gets use to the sitting. But trying to walk around or focusing on the block is nothing but a mind game. There is no block or veil to go through. You are already through it, you just need to remember.
so what is meditation, if not a mathod of playing with one's own mind in order to solve problems otherwise not malleable?
The reflex theory is exactly that.
an experiment was made (by Pavlov of the Salivating Dogs fame) whereby the neural cortex which separated motor function during sleep was hindered in a cat. the cat, whilst fully asleep, got up and "lived the dream" walking, running, jumping etc.
THIS is the block one's mental state encounters whilst attempting to cross the "valley" of unconsciousness whilst still fully aware!
Whilst i agree that it IS yourself who is the "enemy" remember it is also yourself who is the "friend".
it isn't as easy as patting the chap on the back and saying "it's ok, bud. only me!"
Has anyone ever seen "The Cell". It epitomises my theory above, as do many others, and combines the detailed thought of Arjuna, with my methods, albeit longwinded! :-/
However, surely distracting the mind with a mantra whilst the body gets used to the sitting is comparable to the "look behind you" mind game, as you pass through undetected?
My version of one thing may very well be different to somebody else's.
I shall not mock another person's view if THAT works for THEM.
perhps i misunderstand WHAT it is i am doing, but it WORKS for ME.
sorry.
There is very common confusion between the meanings of meditation and contemplation. I highly advise that those members that are interested in these topics, and studies, learn the difference. It will prove more than helpful.
I find the mind to be very prismatic. Like a prism, it can be viewed and approached from more than one angle, and hence I believe that there is more than one way to solve a problem with mental blocks
(I'm a writer, if there's one thing I'm very well acquainted with, it's blocks ♥)
As for stimulating brain functions, asleep or otherwise, this may make a great zombie but serves no purpose for meditation.
thanks beshadowed!
I agree wholeheartedly with that, hence, the more different ideas offered, the more the recipients will be able to conquer with.
I'm glad YOU understood to what my examples were referring, and their relevence.
Arjuna. Whilst your points ARE valid, and WILL be helpful to someone, please attempt to refrain from putting down other people's ideas and thoughts, when they have been proven to work FOR THEM.
This is a COMMUNITY forum, for discussion and throwing ideas around so that EVERYBODY can learn and benefit from EVERYBODY's experiences and thoughts.
Keep the Macho Overpowering Alpha Bravado to the coucil estates please.
I mean no offence. I am fully aware how easy it is to want one's own words to be right. but together, we are ALL right.
Thank you.
No offense taken. But the bottom line is that there is no other way of doing it. Century proven techniques work far better than self created ones. When one thinks that what they are doing is working, what they really are doing is creating a comfort zone. This a new block but nobody sees it as such because they feel please with themselves. They accomplished something. The only thing that happens is that you get a kick in your pants to more on and you think that the world is coming down on you. We form ruts but they are comfortable so we do not move on until we get pushed.
In meditation there is no blocks to get through. They are old comfort zones that or no longer comfortable. If you feel that you are doing it right, you created another comfort zone which will be a block in the future. Another Ego trick.
One does not need to have other options. The mind will only look for more and more. The whole idea is to have none! So please refrain personal comments.
perhaps that may very well be true!
but surely if one's understanding of WHAT is happening and WHY is not as learned as one first percieves, (as mine obviously is), then if a method works, and the same results are encountered, isn't THAT how the ancient arts formulated it in the first place?
There are a hundred routes from London to Glasgow. ALL are correct, some have different obstacles than others!
Thank you for your input. :)
"There is more than one way to skin a cat," as the old cliché goes.
There is never "no other way" of doing anything.
♥
Not too clear on your first meaning but there were a couple of different schools of thought. Hell, there always will be.
If you meant does a person need to understand the block, then no. This would be the intellect, ego again, trying to come to the surface. One only need to see the block then release it. No understanding of what cause it or what was is nessecary.
Meditation is only "to be." Nothing else.
But is there really a cat to skin? For meditation, there is not. "Only to be" - nothing more.
Arjuna, go to Wiktionary.org and look up the definition of the word "cliché"
I'm not talking about real cats...
I'm going to let this sit. I am sure the other techniques and comments will show themselves. All students have them. I have heard and experienced them all myself. And yes, I'm stilling working on some myself.
Meditation is meant to calm the mind. To do so means that one must address and discipline the inner child. This is very hard to do. One needs to fully understand that there is no "you." We meditate to listen. We can not do so if we play games with ourselves. There is only one way. To calm the mind, you need to let go. You can not do this and hold on to something else.
There is one way to fill a sieve - not many.
I find burning sage, which in my culture is womens medicine, is very helpful for keeping unknown shadows and things away and to keep you calm while meditating
I am reminded of a fortune cookie I once received that said the following:
"There is but one destination, but many roads to get there."
My understanding of what you are trying to say (and if I am wrong, please correct), is that there is one end result, not one way to go about it.
There are many ways to fill a sieve, but the end result, regardless of how it was done, is that the sieve is filled.
That's what I got from it, anyway.
♥
The quote mentions that nobody has the only truth. And this is correct. For truth changes. But the Gita mentions to ways of reaching the destination, with "action" being the best. Not many. And as for the seive, this is an enlightment concept. And there is only one way. To take the seive and throw it into the ocean. As the seive sinks to the bottom, it becomes filled. You can not still hold on to it and later say "look the seive is filled" for it will no longer be. Learn to let go completely.
And for clarity, I am talking ideally here. Meditation is very hard but you can do so much with it. Some people meditation only for a breather at work and not for enlightenment. It does have many uses.
That's exactly it. One destination, many paths.
I'm glad we agree.
fill a sieve.... with what???
there are several ways, if you look at it pedantically....
fill it with water?
a) submerge it in a bath. you still hold onto a full sieve.....
b) ice. frozen water.... one can fill the sieve with ice. Crushed ice if necessary. As long as the water molecules are larger than the holes in the sieve, the sieve will be filled.
c) fruit. (etc) fill it with something other than water.....
d) throw it in the sea.... the DEAD sea??? you will be able to pick it up, and it WILL remain full. of salt.
However.... a follower of Buddha and Zen would comment....
e) the sieve is ALWAYS full..... of air.
And it is an awesome example of how the many paths lead to the same destination.
Thank you ♥
BeshadowedChild,
I've found your continual use of soothful 'sayings' to be less than helpful.
I believe that you still are entirely missing the point, well presented by xArjunax as it was, which is a shame, since such a sterling effort deserves more than your meagre ramblings.
What are you talking about paths for?
There is no need for a 'path', there is no need for method, there is only release, absolution of the id.
And TheLunarWolf seems to be attempting to place literal meanings upon allegory, which is a futile task at best.
Prephaps its a fear or somthing you blocked away and dont want to remember
Concentration takes practise first you have to learn to concentrate, then you learn to meditate...
I tried music before. I couldn't concentrate while it was playing. I found it too distracting.
But that's me ♥
Perhaps you are not ready to go further into your subconscious, so therefore that is why there is something blocking you.
Just a thought.
i can never meditate. my mind is going 90 miles an hour all the time. It affects my sleep as well as things i do during the day. I forget things that im going to do because of this. can someone give me some advice on that.
Actually, yes, that has happened to me. It was because my spirit had too much negative energy, and I needed to try and channel most of it away first. It sounds funny to "meditate" before you meditate, but really, it helps to clear your mind and your soul.
Their are lots of good books that teach you proper meditatin techniques, i have read a few books on meditation and i am getting better at it, meditation is just one of thoes thing that you have to keep practising, one thing i did was meditated for a couple minuets a day then increased a little every week and that helped me build disapline...
I have trouble meditating myself, I find i can usually trance just as I'm falling asleep, it's how I Dream Walk. Try doing it just as your starting to fall asleep,.
thank you TheLunarWolf you explained in detal about what i should do... i also would like everyone els for there input
It seems as if you are having a rough time with passing into the next phase. You should clear your mind of all it's negativity, and try to fill it with nothing, but positive wavelengths.~NFA
I have experienced this a lot, I will give you my details (msn etc.)
yea when i try to go in i breath and focus souly on my breathing slow rythmic...everything falls away and doesnt matter except reaching the plane... and then i see the wall or feel rather, and a few of you in here mentioned a mist, mine is more like smoke only more dence. i have some crystal focusing pictures with me but the dope that i am forgot to grab the crystals.
I've usually found that if I find myself blocked while meditating I end up having to stop, ground, center, and find another place. It's usually because of a negative energy or something that is invading your psy...
yea i've tryed it in a nuber of different places but to no avail, i get the block or the creature mentioned above. it's not frustrating, but i just want to be able to get there. im more sadned by the experiences because i dont feel that serenity that i feel after i meditate
maybe it's not what surrounds you at all... maybe it's yourself? Something that's troubling you... family affairs anything really... Something that's disturbing your concentration of flowing energy...
yea recently my mom kicked me out, and i have done a few things that i regret, but this started before i was having any problems
Hm. I'm not sure exactly what to tell you. I'm by no means a professional at this sort of thing. Family issues could play a role in it, but since it started before hand... hmmm.... I'm sorry.. I'm really not sure what to say..
*hugs* I wish you the best. I pray you get past your troubles
SW..... i know my previous thread was knocked quite savagely, but may i ask....
before you meditate, have you ever gone through in your mind what it is you are actually searching for?
i tend to waffle, so i'll keep this short and await an answer before continuing....
the only thing I have found to help me with that is to ask your self what is going on in your mind to create this wall and address that problem *that is if it is not an outside problem*
yes T.L.W. i focus on geting to my tree... when i first started meditating i was told to see a tree and observe the tree and place it somewhere and once i got good enough i was the tree... and i want to go back there but i cant seem to
i started geting the block about 6 months ago... when all was calm and quiet... i got the block and every thing went to hell
All I can say about this is don't try to hard. Just relax and let it come to you.
I am guessing that the block is a problem buried deep inside you and that was slowly brought to surface by previous meditations... Now you need to find a was to deal with it, through the help of other forms of meditations or with the help of a master which could help you at least see more clear what the problem is...
Usually a block of this sort is a fear or a remorse feeling about someone...
Sorry no experience with that....
But the advice to take a break and try later when the wall isn't there anymore sounds good to me.
I don't have any experience with meditating and the coming to a wall thing, but good luck busting through that! I know when I get frustrated playing the piano and I find that I've hit a "block" in my playing, I get up and take a walk, or just do something else then come back to it later. That seems to help.
Sounds like you need to clear your thoughts somewhat by relaxing more and concentrating on your breathing and nothing else.
I agree with vamplez. When people meditate they worry to much about trying to achieve a spiritual moment rather than actually relaxing the body and mind. When you learn to relax your body and mind you will eventually achieve the spiritual high.
The only way to do that is through your breathing and concentrating on that.
Make the wall black, like a blackboard. You see nothing. Turn off your mind, it is tricking you. There is nothing there, only you and your fears. Become fearless of your minds traps, for you have put them there to ensnare yourself.
The student met the Zen Master, and sat down across the low table. "Tea?" said the master. "Yes please" The master poured the tea, but kept pouring after the cup was full. "Master, you're pouring tea when the cup is full" cried the student. The Master said" You must start with an enpty cup, for your mind is full and you cannot learn, and so it overflows"
the shadowy figure may not be there to block you it may be there to try and help guide you to the path you are supossed to take. Try to communicate with it. See i fit means you harm or if it's there as a guide.
This may help to determine why you can't get any farther then that wall.
I find that in the original situation that first I would clear and purify the space. I would then energize a magick circle. Ask for proection from Kali as she is a dark protector goddess. Finally I would proceed with my meditation. Also I would ensure all conduits for entry from the spirit world were out of the house esp ouija boards.
as far as the quiji board goes....*shakes head* nope, wont own one. ok ok i see what your geting at
before you start to meditate, burn inscense to help relaxx you even more, then once you get to that stage where your block appears...imagine a bridge over it or a tunnel under it & it should help you pass by!
i think what im going to do to fuly relax is take a long hot bath and then try it.
everyone has given you such great suggestions i don't think i'll be of much help.
i definitely agree that is something that should be faced, without fear, but with an open mind, seeking knowledge.
Does anyone have a idiots guide that actually works on beginning meditation?
lizsara if i had one of those guides I would happy to give it to you but I think everyone has do it in their own way and for that you cant read a book just to find it . it is something that you must alone to do in your own way by yourself
id have to agree with sportsfan on that one every1 has their own way
When I meditate and come to a "wall" or become blocked, I usually get up and take a break for a little while and come back to what was doing. If for some reason you have had no success in that one place, you may want to consider choosing a new place to meditate.
LOL, LizSarah, they probably do!
I like to use Carlos Casteneda's approach and explanation when coming to the "block." He has a lot of really great books you may want to read. I think they would help you immensely.
Our minds have a way of shutting down when something is un-understandable. I know that when I meditate, I have been blocked before. I do not call upon spirits at all so if that is what you are seeing, maybe you should try a different path.
