I am a practitioner of the arts of chaos magick. I find that chaos magick somehow crosses the line between the occult and the scientific.
I wonder what peoples views on chaos magick are.
I dated a guy for awhile that was a practitioner of chaos magick.. I never really understood the fundamentals of it no matter how he tried to explain it to me. Sigils and frenzies.. I just dont get it.. lol. Lookin forward to reading more on this thread..
For me,
I find that chaos magick is the natural evolution of the arcane arts. From something cloistered monks used to practice, combining the science of the day.
However I find that in my research, I have to know geology, geography, history, languages, history, historical liturature, Anthropology, Chemestry, mathematics, biology, human anatomy, astronomy, astrology, eastern thought, yoga, tantra, judaism, the greek pantheons, sumerian and babylonian pantheons, the egyptian patheons, as well as the aforemention culture, and socio-religious views.
So blending it all together is what evolves into chaos magicks. The trancendantal arts of levi, the Thamauturgical works of the priests and sorcerers, the philosophers through out the ages, as well as the other thinkers who contributed to high magickal practices, as well as the concepts of Theurgy. It is all chaos magicks to a degree, The ancients applied it, the old ones applied it, they just didn't name it by string theory, and chaos theory, but it is there, in all the work.
How to explain chaos magick......hmmmm......
Well, the easiest way to explain it is this.
Chaos magick is the art of using willpower and sigils (created by yourself to represent a desired effect) to inject order into the raw energies of chaos, thereby bringing about your desired effect.
Not sure i quite understand this Type of Magic i was playing a Game where Choas Magic was Used and It was Odd cause i would cast one spell and get something totally different like Casting a spell for meteors and getting flowers falling it was chaotic but i wasnt amused im sure there has to be much more into this and i also am looking forward to reading this thread more as the game im more then sure either did not portray the type of magic correctly or was a totally off or if it was straight on then i just dont get it at all
The trick to chaos magick is successful Gnosis, through various states of being.
Through emotional frenzy, orgasm, extreme hatred or passion, Things that shift your perceptions and allow the causation of your desire through an unstable sigilization method.
The Octarine system of Chaos magick is my personal favorite. Where it blends the other seven divisions under the vernacular prime, removing the verb TO BE, in accordence with quantum theory where All is doing, there is no being.
Very well put Infernal. I couldn't have said it better myself.
As Our learned father A.O.Spare would have said...."all things emotional hold the key to everything".
May he rest in peace.
But his work only goes so far, I fear that there are many who only go so far, and their work is never continued. People get caught up in the lower arts and never grow past the basics. Less in the intermediate fields, and even less in the advanced category. Which is a sad notion.
But at least we can be the horse a little longer and try to inspire the interest in the heigher atributes of these arts eh Mener?
Indeed we can if the thread permits.
I found that Phil Hine (although an awesome author and great researcher) missed some key elements that Spare deliberately hid.
In spotting them and relating them to some of the works of the great alister crowley, there seems to be a hell of a lot of interesting notions in spares works. The problem is whether you have the understanding to actually continue on to the more advanced works that spare so carefully pointed to.
Yes....but the old stuttering genius, sadly is of no help now.
That all dpends on how you read his works. If you read between the lines, you'll be amazed as to what you find.
Mener
Chaos magic allows for any focus and any emotion that can create the energies necessary to bring the desired result. There are definitely some folks in the past who have tried to lay out guidelines and ritual for others to follow but the principle rule in chaos magic is that there is no rule (hence the chaos).
This is not the chaos magic of RPG where in the magic is uncontrolled and unpredictable to the point of trying one thing and getting something completely different. This is not literally the chaos gods or the chaosm of White Dwarf books or Warhammer. Although interestingly enough those could be used as a focus in chaos magic if you felt a connection to that mythology.
The notion is that by creating your own sigils or ritual or by using ritual that appeals to you on a deep level, you can focus yourself better and have a stronger connection to them, than by just blinding following what someone else says is 'the way'.
This is also not totally without outside influence. There are summonings or manifestations that one can try with chaos magic, however, beyond the goal, one doesn't really acknowledge whether you are in fact summoning or manifesting what you literally called. In Chaos magic, what you call is more about the result and the energy than about who actually answers and completes the process. If you use a ritual involving the Greek god Aries, it's not necessary to prove that it was in fact Aries who exists and responded. Something did and that something (energy, being, spirit, or god) responded to your focus.
Actually I have never had the fortune of reading his works directly.
Anything particulary yummy i should seek out??
I studied Chaos Magick for about a year, went to lectures given by a member of the IOT, read a few books. I fully understand and actually enjoy the concept of it, in fact, more of my "spells" have worked with Chaos than with anything else. I'm not a full blown practitioner but I will say it comes in handy more often than I expected.
Any of the works by Phil Hine are a great starting point as are the works of A O Spare.
I never Heard of chaos magic, but i have heard that rampant magic often leads to the destruction of life....
rampant magicic ???? are you talking about rpg card game?
I have tried Chaos Magick, but it did not feel right to me, so i never really took it to far, it is a good form of magick but just not for me...
From what I'm reading I perform some chaos magic in my every day life...interesting. I have followed the Teutonic path for 10+ years now but have always added elements of other paths to my practice. I would be interested to learn more about this. Any other authors you would recommend beside the two already mentioned?
Sorry...
Peter Caroll* might have butchered the last name.
The liber kaos
The liber Null and psychonaut
Peter Carroll is a great author, but sometimes I wonder if some of what he says verges on fantasy. I mean no disrespect in this statement, as a lot of what he concludes is valid.
I know nothing of this at all, but just applying logic here
If you are 'using willpower and sigills to inject order into chaos' doesn't the chaos cease to exist the instant it has order ?
I am assuming that you are referring to chaos as jumbled up 'stuff' - and not the energy filled barrier area between Hell and the Earth - also called Chaos - that Satan had to cross to corrupt Adam & Eve [Milton, Paradise Lost]
Art
Thats is dependant on the individual. Most Chaotes or Discordians use the principals of string theory.
One thought well directed in the "pool" of consiousness is enough so long as there is a return from desire it really doesn't matter the source from where it came. or Chaos, cause there is no particular source of conjurations, just sort of a general cast.
chaos magik... does the name not really say it all? Crowley in who i have a great deal of respect for, would have been a ideally suited for imersion in the chaotic art...
The best part about chaos magik is that all thing are flowing without set perameters...333
There's a portion of the Principia that goes into this.
"I am chaos. I am the substance from which your artists and scientists draw rhythms. I am the spirit with with your clowns and children laugh in happy anarchy."
That being said, the various deities of Chaos have not exactly been known to be pleased when people start meddling in their honeypot.
Also, as an aside, how can you say Chaos Magic is any one thing, or done any particular way?
It's chaos. You can try to slap a lable on it's little naked bum, but good luck makin' it stick.
Thats what makes it so nummy to play with.....And I will have you know those elder gods can kiss off my honey pot...its mine :P
this is my first time as well hearing about chaos magick... ill be back to view more about and browse sites sounds kool
Morlock.
Crowley did indeed immerse himself in the prionciples of chaos magick for quite some time before establishing the order of the golden dawn. He also used some chaos magick in the golden dawn.
Scybermonk.
I have not said that chaos magick is one thing or another, i simply stated how I achieve my goals through it's use.
I have to agree (again) with infernal where he says that the chaos gods can leave hiss honey pot alone. Although in my case (as i am sure is true with many other users of the chaotic arts) the honey pot is way too large for pooh bear to play with. LOL
Mener....
Just quick reference. It was Crowley who joined the order of the Golden Dawn in the late 1800s and in the early part of the 1900s was kicked out for being too eroctic and going against the principals of the order. He started the Temple at Thelema with his workings in the chaotic arts.
Yes, let us take our mortal wills and face up against deities. You go ahead with that. Me? I'ma sit back, eat some popcorn, and watch as yer reminded why they are called Gods, and we are called Squishy Mortals. Enjoy!
Also, that wasn't just directed at any one person, my comments never are. I never arrive to a discussion until tons of posts are made, ergo, my reply is based on what I see, up to that point.
Sorry Infernal, it seems you are right. That shows how befuddled the chaotic mind can be when trying to remember important details such as that.
I knew he started a temple/magickal order....i thought i was correct in stating it to be the order of the golden dawn. Obviously I was wrong LOL.
Thanks matey.
Scybermonk.
Sorry, I was just answering your post. I did not for one second think that it was aimed at just myself.
As for the popcorn....eat well and enjoy the show. You would be surprised what we mortals are capable of (if infact we are mortals).
i have never heard of this and now im interested lol is there somewhere where i can read up on this more?
Chaos magick is a dangerous thing. It can cause the user to eventually become mad if it is used too often. It manipulates the user's body, everything about them becomes augmented and it can put a serious stress in the affected person, which could lead to an early grave.
Kage, I have been practising chaos magick for at least 10 years, and as yet have felt no ill feelings as a result from the use of it. I wonder where you get your information from as I am somewhat an advanced user of the chaos arts and use them a lot during astral projection.
This is for anyone who would like to know more.
You can find plenty of information about chaos magick here
I hope this helps.

Something FelixFelix said earlier struck a chord with me...
'The notion is that by creating your own sigils or ritual or by using ritual that appeals to you on a deep level, you can focus yourself better and have a stronger connection to them, than by just blinding following what someone else says is 'the way'.'
I took this to mean that Chaos Magick is, basically, creating your own rituals ansd spells rather than using books and pre-written rituals, am I right?
Becuase thats all I do. Ever since beginning the craft and learning the basics, i've done more instinctive work and essentially 'made up' my own workings. Could this be classed as a base form of Chaos? Or have I got completely the wrong idea? lol
Well that depends really. A worker of chaos magick uses sheer will and imagination. They use no tools during their spells, but often use gemstones to store energy.
If that is the way you work, and I believe it is, then yeah, you would be classed as a worker/minion of chas. However, if you mean that you are somehow pagan and write spells that need various items such as incense, oils, bloods etc etc; then personally i would think you more pagan than chaos mage. Remember that all witches turn to their own means of spell writing/casting, but sometimes the basis of how they practise does not change.
Mener,
I tend to not agree. There is a lovely aray of the direct arts that do not focus on the chaotic element, however require no such blood uses etc...
Though i gotta say i love tinkering with grafting the I-ching Characters to chaos currents....makes for some interesting fire works.
LMAO well fireworks are always good, but make sure it's safe LOL.
A friend of mine decided to craft some enochian symbols into chaos. He still has a scar now from where he got burned.
Haha,,,,,thats one of those i told you so moments.....
Enochian is already chaotic, but if you tinker with it wrong...BAM....ouch...
haha....your friends do get themselves into problems...makes things interesting though.
Well I learnt never to mess with powerful magicks. Still, deciphering the tablets is taking some time LMAO.
yeh that angel stuff hurts lol
intresting you use gems .. iv used crytals but mainly drain energy from victom... em people willing to give energy ;-)
I draw energy from a variety of sources. The gems are just tuned to pick up and store the energies that vibrate around me.
Chaos Magick, IMO, is more of a meta religion and/or a basic framework to get to where you want to be in a way.
Ask 100 different chaotes/chaos magicians/ kaoists/chaoists/CMT enthusiast/invisibles, get 100 different answers. That's probably the most important thing to remember about lifestyle practices or paradigms in general, but it particularly applies here.
Chaos Magick Theory can be described as results oriented magick. It generally involves the recognition and thorough understanding of the following:
Belief is a tool.
Nothing is true, everything is permitted/Recognition of Duality.
Expand your anathema.
Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law. Notice. Period. Crowley never anything about the harmyenun BS.
And a general side note - just because CMTer has no prob using different belief systems doesnt mean she has no morals. she's simply more enlightened. ;-)
Also, when we say we have no problem "taking advantage of you," it'll generally be something smart, like, "hexing" you to become our dear friend and share beers with us, giving us company and a good time for a undetermined amount of time.
Real evil, right?
At any rate, my opinions are not the thoughts of the chaoist standing to my left, or to hir right. Simply random tidbits made to entice you so you will go and buy Liber Null by Uncle Pete and get involved in this goodness, or for whatever reason, shun it, and leave me alone. =)
(me, respectfully, of course, meaning all of humanity. you know.)
My ex was very into Chaos Magick and was a practitioner. I think it is a little of both, the occult and scientific. I never personally had an inclination to dabble in it.
In some ways it is both but in many others much different. Very diverse indeed.
I don't know much about magic peroid. So thank you for posting this. I find all the magic threads enlightening.
